Programming / What Is Software Engineering And Software Development? by flexit: 1:22am On Jun 19, 2020
Software engineering is the process of analyzing user needs and then designing, constructing, and testing end user applications that will satisfy these needs through the use of software programming languages.

It is the application of engineering principles to software development. In contrast to simple programming, software engineering is used for larger and more complex software systems, which are used as critical systems for businesses and organizations.

Typical formal definitions of software engineering are: “the application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software. Software engineering is relatively a new area of engineering though, but the scope of software engineering is extremely broad. Being one of the prominent branches of the field of Engineering, it’s growing among the fastest fields in the world today.

It must be noted that the term software development can be used for every type of software development whether it’s as simple as visual basic for applications Modules for Microsoft Word, Excel or Access or developing large, expensive and complicated applications for businesses or creating software for gaming entertainment.

Software engineers are the computer programming professionals. It’s worth mentioning that a software engineer is also a programmer, as he writes codes, but a programmer may not be called a software engineer, because in the former case, one needs to have a formal education.

Besides, a software engineer is the one who follows a systematic process that leads to understanding the requirements, working with teams and various professionals in order to create the application software or components or modules that fulfill the specific needs of the users successfully; whereas a computer programmer can work independently, as he understands algorithms and knows how to create codes following the specifications given by the software engineers.

Car Talk / 5 Reasons Why Your Next Car Will Look Similar To Your Current Car Design by flexit: 3:06am On Jun 11, 2020
If you've been paying attention to the cars you see daily on the road or have gone car shopping over the past decade, you might have observed that most of the new cars being produced look quite alike. Auto brands only try to stand out from others with distinctive headlights and badged grilles here and there.

On your own, if you're asked to identify a compact car based on its body styling, chances are that you will fail at it. Well, except you're a car enthusiast. And talking about compact cars, it's no news that popular car brands, Toyota and Honda, that have been battling for supremacy in the auto world, share a similarity in their compact car segment-Camry and Accord.

So, the question is: why are there similarities between the cars produced by automakers? Are they bereft of ideas and designs? There must be a reason why your next car will probably look similar to your current car design. We've compiled some reasons for the homogeneity, which this post will be highlighting.

Let's see them.

1. Aerodynamic efficiency
Aerodynamics teaches us that a car designed to achieve maximum mileage will have to slip through the air effortlessly with minimal drama. There should be drag reduction, low wind noise, and better handling so that vehicles won't roll over when running on the road. This has necessitated automakers to comply with aerodynamically efficient designs for their cars’ bodywork. And this means they will be letting go of many stylish designs that could have distinguished their cars from other brands to achieve the principles of aerodynamics. We see this played out in the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight which featured skirted rears to help them ride smoothly.

In addition, the more a car is aerodynamically efficient, the less fuel it will use up while on the road. Car shoppers are looking for efficient cars, so these cars have to be optimized to meet that expectation.

2.Government regulations
Government regulations affect the way vehicles are being designed, the safety features included, and the car's overall performance. With automakers designing and producing vehicles globally, government regulation in Europe and Asia, where most cars are manufactured are taken into consideration. For instance, European pedestrian protection regulation requires cars made for their market to have big fonts to protect road users if they're hit by a car.

When it comes to safety requirements, there’re some designs that may not work as the curves of some bumpers and sizes of headlights may jeopardize the safety regulation put in place to protect people. This will force all automakers to follow a particular pattern and design for their cars.

The American market on its own has an agency called the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that's responsible for defining and regulating all vehicle performance standards. Every car produced for their market is expected to pass the crash-test before it can be allowed on the road.

3.Market trend
Trends sell faster. People buy and sell what's popular out there. Basically, the marketplace influences car manufacturers’ choice of design for a car. Automakers conduct market research to know trends that are appealing to consumers and try to model the same design in order to grab their own slice of moolah in the auto market. With this, you should know the reason why your next car will look similar to your current car design.

This happens in every market. Take a look at the mobile phone industry. One manufacturer produces touchscreen phones and the next minute, everybody starts developing touchscreen phones because it's trending.

4.Financial cost of developing a car

Developing a vehicle is expensive. Automakers spend a lot of time and money designing and optimizing a car for better performance. These cars have to be sold to offset production costs. And when there's no market for it, that's a huge investment going down the drain. Instead of creating a new design, automakers prefer going mainstream to avoid risk.

5.Shared platform
Platform sharing among car manufacturers has been going on for decades. Here, automakers share design, engineering and production efforts as well as car components. This implies that vehicles sharing the same platform are going to be the same size. For instance, The 2007 Toyota Camry shared the same platform with the Lexus ES, thus the similarity between them.

Car manufacturers take this route because it's going to help save the production cost of not having to design and build new vehicles from scratch. Just like we mentioned earlier of how developing a car can run into billions of dollars for automakers.

Moreover, the Volkswagen Group developed a platform dubbed MEB (modular electric drive matrix) for electric vehicles. And the company plans to offer the platform to other car manufacturers to help offset costs.

Summing it up
So yes, modern car designs all look similar and there're agreeable reasons for it. What more important is the cars are safe and efficient.

Isn't that a good trade?

Let's know your thoughts on this.

Health / Writing To Live: How Two Friends Are Attempting To Save Over 40 Million Nigerian by flexit: 8:33pm On May 06, 2020
The World Bank reports that 22% of Nigerians--that’s a staggering 41.8 million citizens--suffer from depression.

In 2019, the duo, Fortune Bekee and Kuro Briggs launched Truthshare, www.truthshare.com.ng, an online platform that’s leveraging the power of storytelling and technology to drive depression away as far as possible, and limit its ripple effects on the minds and lives of young Africans.

Truthshare is helping Nigerians have a better mental health by providing an anonymous online writing tool and access to qualified licensed counselors.

We were touched by the increasing number of suicides being committed recently. And while discussing, we thought some of these deaths could have been stopped if the victims probably talked about it with someone, anyone, who’d be open enough to understand their plights and accepting them. We decided to come up with this solution which is already making an impact,” Fortune says.

Over time, the writing therapy (administered by therapists) posits that writing one's feelings gradually eases feelings of emotional trauma. The University of Rochester informs that "simply writing down your thoughts and feelings helps to understand them more clearly. And if you struggle with stress, depression, or anxiety, keeping a journal is a great idea. "

Be that as it may, telling stories isn’t enough to curb an emotional menace that could sink a soul into a mental upheaval in no time. The team recognises this fact and adopts a three-fold approach to Truthshare--a free online writing tool to help users relieve themselves of any emotional distress, counsellors matched with depressed users, and offline seminars that double as therapeutic and psychological sessions-- all designed to offer a long-lasting solution.

[img][/img]

But there’s still the challenge of encouraging people to ‘speak up’. Bearing the societal consciousness in mind, Truthshare protects the identity of users with its anonymous feature.

“A greater idea is even having users who have passed through similar scenarios or experienced counsellors respond to what other users have written. Not so many people in this region are aware of this great idea. And we are here to educate them.”

In the read stories section, we can see all the stories and responses to these stories. All these have been achieved with little or no online awareness. The more people we reach the more we will be able to touch more lives. Already, we have touching stories of people we have counselled and talked to and they are really happy.

Building a platform where people share their stories, get help and be happy is a strong motivation for Bekee and Briggs. But their solution doesn’t just stop at sharing stories--because, as it’s said, “a problem shared is only half solved”. And Truthshare doesn’t exist to solve part problems. This is why licensed counsellors enlisted on the platform are often matched with chronic depression victims based on users’ request. There’s also the peer-to-peer engagement where folks undergoing similar plights could anonymously engage and offer related counsel.

The goal, as Fortune puts it, is to first ensure that the average Nigerian gets better mental health and citizens feeling depressed having a chance to talk to someone, without being stigmatised.

Globally, depression is the second-leading cause of disability, with slightly more than 4% of the world's population diagnosed with it. World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) has identified Africa to have countries with the highest rates of depression.

The Federal Ministry of Health Nigeria says about 20 to 30 percent of Nigerians suffer from mental illness. And it has led to some of them committing suicide. We can trace the causes of depression for an average Nigerian to a million issues, but in a situation where Nigeria, the hallmark of the African continent ranks 10th in Africa and 67th in the world in terms of suicide rate, there’s an urgency that cannot be overlooked.

Perhaps we’re being too futuristic to sense that it’s already robbing us of our chances right now. For instance, one of the leading causes of depression sprout in Nigeria is the country’s unemployment problems which have gone on for longer than one could keep track.

The solution, Truthshare, is supposed to channel a lost cause to a refined purpose in this manner; a depressed mind anonymously expresses thoughts and dissatisfaction on the platform, a response is given without an iota of stigmatisation, advice from professional minds and counsellors follow suit, physical gatherings to further strengthen victims and avoid relapse are scheduled, healing begins, and the mind becomes clear and stable to think solutions to Africa’s pressing problems.

The resultant effects; entrepreneurship is born; unemployment solved, depression gone, suicide uncontemplated, another African life saved, and mental illness chased.

Also, the online platform is looking to solve the alarming unemployment issue in Nigeria by providing jobs in counselling sessions, especially for graduates in psychology who’d love to practise their profession.

Truthshare is piloting its cause in Nigeria, giving the growing stats of the said problem across the country-- 20 - 30% of Nigerians suffer from mental illness. The team believes it’s the perfect place to begin and cause so much impact in the shortest possible time.

Beyond lives that are being touched by Truthshare, the team has had quite a number of feats since inception. For instance, in November 2019, Truthshare won a grant from the Make In Nigeria pitch competition.

In a few years time, the team hopes the initiative will touch 10,000 (ten thousand) lives monthly while providing jobs for all counsellors who’d will be part of impacting these lives.

Across times and seasons, the saying “the pen is mightier than the sword” has mostly been connoted for writing in order to forge peace and it holds true in many situations. But this time around, Truthshare is bringing a new definition to this lifelong saying by championing a course to suppress depression in the simplest possible way--writing to live.
