hmmn, on karmic the one thing i NEVER mess with is the gdm. iv had it break on me twice, and was unrecoverable.
do u know the gdm comes broken? its documented in bugs.launchpad!!!

as per my previous post the package i was referring to is called ENVY though im not sure i know what u want to do sha. butiv found that most of the card issues and 3D, eyeandy drivers issue was solved by getting that package instead of the traditional driver thingy.

The bios driver is not installing? Ok here is whats up, there is a particular order that u hav 2 install dem drivers, i know d bios/pci motherboard drivers come first.

Uninstall all d drivers u have installed, restart d system, it will detect all d hardwares, dont allow it install drivers for any. Now start with d bios driver, then d pci, then any driver other than sound, vga etc. Those should be last.

Note that after every driver install allow d pc restart.

Note dt in new pc, d modem driver, sound, and sound management software go hand in hand so they should all be present. Try to get ALL drivers for the laptop, dont omit any.


Then lest i forget i hope the xp os is not sp3 or some other modified or fake version? Because at times they do not install d audio controller.

U should check the device manager anyway to see what is missing. Thats in controlpanel/system/hardware/device manager.

its not only the sound drivers u have to get. there is at least 1 or 2 more things u have to get including the modem driver.

the names escape me right now but i remember there is one bios driver for the board and one other driver that interfaces devices and the board. in short try to get all the listed drivers for the laptop unless ur sure u have installed the exact same driver. better to err on the side of caution though. its not working cos there are other drivers still needed for it to work.

nb, did u bother to check the device mgr and the volume tab?

depends! what progrma are we talking about here? depends on how smart the software maker is. the obvious way, anyway is to delete the registry entries, locate all config files written on the pc, delete them then restart the computer.

NB if its a network app that picks data stamps from a server then ur probably wasting ur time. unless u know hw to hack the server and delete ur pc's entries! but then if u knew that u wouldnt be asking

Yeah thanks, i already checked d windows installer service. Its on and ok. The file is an installation file i grabbed off d net. I have used b4 so i knw its ok. It seems 2 be a msiexec issue so to be sure i got another .msi file and it installed fine!

I tried those cmd lines in d picture, result was the same though. Wonder wat it could be d problem

ater u check the box and click ok click apply and let it download. it will then install.

u will then see it as is in this shot. if u want to install any exe, right click the exe, choose open with wine windows prog loader and from there on it install like windows and even gives u a shortcut

stancozy precisely what are u doing? using ur windows to download? if not that iv rearranged my desktop id have posted screenshots. do u use a usb modem or fone? just so we get wats up, cos u need to use synaptic to get wine. i doubt if the .deb will work for u cos it may have dependencies and the.debs are usually not very new. unless u compile.

synaptic IS THE TERMIINAL. its already in the system. infact the system is synaptic. lol.

click on applications at the lefthand topmost part of the screen, acccessories, terminal. there is the most powerful thing in a pc ever made. with that white box u can DO ANYTHING, ANYTHING. thas where the pwr of synaptic lies. its to help u administer ur pc, locate the wares u want and all that is needed to make it work!

the synaptic package manager, u have a graphical version for installing for pple coming from windows. it makes it even easier to install, 3 clicks and thats all, its not ur biz hw its done, it gets done!!

synaptic graphical is located in, look for it, its also at the main tab, navigate round, get a feel of it and get used to the system. pls bring all questions u have no matter hw silly it sounds!

and go to www.ubuntuforums.org and register so u can have access to geeks worldwide. cheers, welcome bro

what eva u wanna use its pretty straight foward anyway. plug it in and it will start prompts for u to set the settings. its at the top right hand corner anyways. note the only correct gprs settings for naija is the mtn one o. the rest are not correct so change them to the correct one. i mean username/psswd/apn

@ stan. well i dunno if u have a good idea of the general way to do installations in ubuntu. usually synaptic first cos it handles dependencies, then terminal, same thing even faster for u to do, install .debs manually by double clicking. (prob is at times u may end up in dependencies hell)

if u mean ur .exe, thats wine. refresh ur software sources list

in terminal: 'sudo apt-get update' then password

or if u prefer graphical use synaptic, click of refresh button.

then run: 'sudo apt-get install wine'

or in synaptic use the search bar and type in wine. mark for installation and allow it download and install.

when thru it ends up under the applications tab, click on configure and poke around the settings and choose the windows version u wanna emulate. personally thats the only thing i change, i use xp compatibility mode

then grab ur .exe, right click and choose open with wine windows program loader. enjoy
