Differences in context and practice A one-time gift vs. a recurring obligation: Abraham gave a tithe of the spoils of war to Melchizedek on a single, specific occasion to honor God after a military victory. The Bible does not mention him doing so again. In contrast, a monthly tithe is a regular, recurring financial requirement. Spoils of war vs. personal income: Abraham's gift was from the plunder taken in battle, not his personal flocks, herds, or general income. He then returned the remaining spoils to the king of Sodom, taking nothing for himself. This is markedly different from demanding a tenth of a believer's regular salary. Voluntary act vs. a legal command: Abraham's giving was a voluntary, spontaneous act of worship and gratitude, performed centuries before the Mosaic Law was established. The practice of tithing was later instituted as a mandatory tax under the law given to Moses to support the Levites and the temple system. This legalistic system was fulfilled and abolished by Jesus. Principles of interpretation Doctrine from example vs. command: Interpreting a narrative or a single descriptive event as a binding universal rule is a flawed method of biblical interpretation. While Abraham's act offers a beautiful example of faithful generosity, it was not presented as a command for all believers to follow. For example, Christians do not practice animal sacrifices just because they are described in the Old Testament. New Testament emphasis on generous giving: The New Testament encourages generous, freewill giving, but it does not mandate a specific percentage like the tithe. The focus is on the state of the giver's heart—that giving should be cheerful, not reluctant or under compulsion. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul says, "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." Typology and Christ's priesthood: The book of Hebrews actually uses Abraham's tithe to Melchizedek to make a theological point about Christ's superior priesthood, not to command tithing. It argues that since Abraham (and by extension his descendant Levi) gave a tithe to Melchizedek, Melchizedek's priesthood was superior to the Levitical one. This ultimately points to Jesus, who is a priest in the order of Melchizedek, and the new covenant he established is superior to the old. Therefore, to construct a rigid, mandatory monthly tithing doctrine for the modern church primarily from Abraham's one-time, voluntary tithe of spoils is to misinterpret the biblical context and purpose of the event. |
