The Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) has introduced a 7.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) on certain electronic banking services, effective January 19, 2026. This new tax policy will affect banks, fintechs, and users of electronic banking services in Nigeria. What is the 7.5% VAT on Bank Transfers? The 7.5% VAT applies to service fees charged by banks and fintechs on transactions like mobile transfers, USSD payments, and card issuance fees. The VAT is calculated on the service fee, not the transaction amount. How Will the 7.5% VAT Affect Your Transactions? - Banks and fintechs will charge VAT on service fees for electronic transactions. - The VAT will be itemized separately on transaction receipts and account statements. - Users will pay the VAT on top of the service fee. Services Exempt from 7.5% VAT - Interest on deposits and savings. - Services rendered by Microfinance Banks with tier 1 unit or tier 2 unit licenses. Example Calculation - Service fee for ₦100,000 transfer: ₦50 - 7.5% VAT on ₦50: ₦3.75 - Total fee: ₦53.75 Impact on Personal and Business Accounts The 7.5% VAT applies to both personal and business accounts. However, businesses can claim input VAT on their banking services as part of their VAT returns. How to Minimize Charges - Use electronic transactions with lower service fees. - Consider bulk transactions to reduce service fees. - Check with your bank for VAT-exempt services. Frequently Asked Questions - Q: Does the 7.5% VAT apply to all bank transactions? A: No, it applies to specific electronic banking services. - Q: Who pays the 7.5% VAT? A: The user pays the VAT on top of the service fee. Conclusion The 7.5% VAT on bank transfers is a new tax policy aimed at generating revenue for the government. Users of electronic banking services in Nigeria should be aware of the impact on their transactions and plan accordingly. |
onyxo76:You go school at all 7.5% vat is like 3.75# They are not charging your main money this how is works Service fee for ₦100,000 transfer ≈ ₦50 - ₦100 (varies by bank) 7.5% VAT on ₦50 fee = ₦3.75 -Total fee = ₦53.75 So, on ₦100,000, VAT ≈ ₦3.75 (if service fee is ₦50). |

In a scene that would have been unimaginable just weeks ago, deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro stood before a United States federal judge on Monday, January 5, 2026, to answer to a litany of narco-terrorism charges. Appearing in a Manhattan courtroom less than 48 hours after his high-profile capture by U.S. special forces in Caracas, the 63-year-old was defiant, repeatedly asserting his innocence through a Spanish interpreter. “I am innocent. I am a decent man. I am still the president of my country,” Maduro declared before being firmly silenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who noted that the courtroom was a place for legal pleas, not political speeches. The morning began with a tightly coordinated security operation that saw Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, transported from a detention center in Brooklyn to the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse. Escorted by federal agents in tactical gear, the couple was flown by helicopter across New York Harbor before being whisked into the courthouse via an armored motorcade. Inside, Maduro appeared in a blue prison uniform and handcuffs, a stark contrast to the presidential sashes and military parades that defined his decade-long rule. The U.S. Department of Justice has leveled a staggering 25-page indictment against the former leader, accusing him of presiding over the “Cartel of the Suns.” Prosecutors allege that Maduro partnered with the Mexican Sinaloa and Zetas cartels, as well as Colombian FARC rebels and the Tren de Aragua gang, to flood American streets with thousands of tons of cocaine. The charges—which include narco-terrorism conspiracy and the possession of destructive devices—carry a potential sentence of life imprisonment. Maduro has long dismissed these allegations as a “Yankee fabrication” designed to seize Venezuela’s vast oil reserves. Cilia Flores, often referred to as the “First Combatant” in Venezuela, also entered a plea of not guilty to charges of cocaine importation conspiracy. Appearing with a bandage on her forehead and a visible injury near her right eye—reportedly sustained during the chaotic military raid on the presidential compound—she stood silently as her legal team affirmed her innocence. Like her husband, she will remain in federal custody without bail, as the court deemed both to be significant flight risks given their international connections. The atmosphere outside the courthouse was electric, with hundreds of protesters divided by police barricades. One group sang the Venezuelan national anthem in celebration of the “fall of a dictator,” while another group of supporters decried the U.S. military intervention as an illegal “kidnapping” of a sovereign head of state. This legal battle is expected to be one of the most significant in the history of the Southern District of New York, involving complex arguments over sovereign immunity and the legality of the U.S. operation that brought them to American soil. Judge Hellerstein, a 92-year-old veteran of the bench, has set the next court date for March 17, 2026. Until then, Maduro and Flores will return to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. While the U.S. administration moves to recognize a transitional government in Caracas, the legal drama in New York has only just begun. As Maduro was led out of the courtroom, he looked toward the gallery and shouted in Spanish, “I am a prisoner of war,” a final act of defiance before the heavy doors of the courtroom swung shut. https://dependable.ng/i-am-still-president-maduro-and-wife-plead-not-guilty-in-manhattan-court/ mynd44 seun Nlfpmod

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced that five suspects have been formally charged to court in connection with the fabrication and dissemination of a false kidnapping report involving students of Oron Secondary School in the state. Dependable NG reports that the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, disclosed this key development during a high-level strategic security meeting with youth presidents and youth leaders drawn from all 31 local government areas of the state, held at the command headquarters, Ikot Akpanabia. The Commissioner stressed that such false alarms are capable of inciting widespread panic and severely undermining public confidence in the security system. He assured the public that the command will continue to take decisive action against anyone who spreads misinformation or attempts to destabilize the peace of the state. He called on all youth leaders to champion truth, promote responsible social media use, and actively counter false narratives capable of disrupting public order. He also urged them to foster stronger collaboration with Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to ensure the early detection of threats and the swift resolution of emerging issues. CP Azare also issued a stern warning against jungle justice, describing the act as unlawful, barbaric, and likely to trigger widespread violence. He emphasized that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands. He warned that anyone found participating in mob action shall be arrested and prosecuted, and urged youths to always hand over suspects to the police for proper investigation and lawful prosecution. Regarding the state government’s recent ban on hostile masquerade activities, CP Azare confirmed that enforcement has commenced. Masquerades’ activities are now strictly confined to village or town hall squares, and any necessity for activities outside these areas requires formal clearance from the office of the Police Commissioner. In response, the youth leaders and community representatives unanimously appreciated the Commissioner of Police for his strong leadership, commitment to peace and order, and maintenance of tight security in the state, while pledging their total readiness to support the police in improving security. The representative of content creators also promised to cooperate with the command and refrain from engaging in crime or causing problems in the name of content creation. https://dependable.ng/akwa-ibom-police-arraign-5-over-fake-school-girls-kidnap-report/ Mynd44, Seun, Nlfpmod
