Alongside its most premium phone yet Xiaomi also had a couple of exciting mid-rangers to announce today. The Mi 11 Lite 5G is officially the first smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 780G chipset, while its 4G variant will pack a Snapdragon 732G chip.

The new Mi 11 Lite 5G is said to be Xiaomi’s most affordable 5G smartphone for the global market.

Otherwise the two Mi 11 Lites are essentially identical beyond the chipset. The screen in both cases is a 6.55” AMOLED of FullHD+ resolution with a single punch hole in the top left corner. You get a 90Hz refresh rate, 240Hz touch sampling rate and 10-bit color depth. While the screen is OLED, Xiaomi has decided to go without a UD fingerprint scanner, so the sensor made it on the side, doubling as a power key.The Snapdragon 780G inside the Mi 11 Lite 5G offers 7-series performance, but flagship-level connectivity. The CPU is clocked at 2.4GHz, while the GPU is Adreno 642, which is somewhere between SD855 and SD865 in terms of performance.

The camera island on the back looks like the flagship Mi 11, but the actual modules are rather different. The main one is a 64MP f/1.8 shooter with a 1/1.97” sensor size. There is also an 8MP f/2.2 ultrawide-angle snapper with a 1/4” sensor, while the third cam is a 5MP macro shooter with autofocus between 3 and 7 cm.

The punch hole on the front is for the 16MP selfie camera.

The Mi 11 Lite phones has a 4,250 mAh battery with a 33W fast charging capacity through the USB-C port. On the bottom, there is also a speaker grille that along with the earpiece act like stereo speakers. The 5G variant also comes with NFC.The Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite comes in Black, Pink, or Blue colors. It will also have three memory combinations - 6/64GB, 6/128GB, and 8/128GB. Prices will start from €299, with availability details to be revealed "soon".The Mi 11 Lite 5G, is offered in Black, Yellow, or Green. The phone comes with either 6GB or 8GB RAM, while storage is 128GB for both versions. It will cost at least €369, and just like the LTE variant, details about market availability and launch dates will be announced soon.

A new report by DigiTimes reveals that MediaTek was the number 1 smartphone chip maker in 2020. The brand’s immense growth is thanks to growing orders from key smartphone OEMs, Huawei’s US ban, and the company’s strategic announcement of its new lineup of Dimmensity chipsets with built-in 5G modems.

In 2020, MediaTek shipped 351.8 million units to smartphone OEMs, compared to the 238 million supplied to OEMs in 2019. This meant an increase from 17.2% global market share in 2019 up to 27.2% market share in 2020. As per Omdia, this is the first time that MediaTek surpasses Qualcomm as the lead smartphone chipset brand by number of shipments.

Xiaomi is the brand’s biggest customer shipping 63.7 million handsets with MediaTek chipsets in 2020 compared to 19.7 million in 2019. Oppo shipped the second largest amount of smartphones with MediaTek chipsets in 2020 at 55.3 million compared to the 46.3 million in 2019. Combined with Realme, Oppo shipped 83.2 million MediaTek devices last year. Samsung also increased its orders with the chipmaker, by 43.3 million shipments in 2020.

With the Huawei-US ban, the company had no choice but to find a new supplier for its vast portfolio of devices. Outside of its flagships that run Huawei’s HiSilicon chips, Huawei went with MediaTek as Qualcomm was unable to supply chips to Huawei due to the ban.

Mostly important for MediaTek's growth in 2020 was in key price segments for MediaTek as the world was impacted by the pandemic in the first half of 2020 and the smartphone market recovered in the second half of the year. Low-end and mid/low0end devices were popular with buyers. MediaTek’s ability to compete [and] present an alternative to Qualcomm chips in this price segment helped the company grow.” – Zaker Li, Senior Analyst of Wireless Devices and Components at Omdia

Looking towards this year, MediaTek is expected to continue growing in smartphone chipset shipments. While Huawei and the new Honor will continue to outsource chipset demand due to its dwindling Kirin brand, the future growth of smartphones is in emerging markets with cheap smartphones, and this is where MediaTek has found great success.

Earlier this month, Facebook sent out an ultimatum to users telling them that they had around a month to agree to the company’s new and updated privacy policy, or stop using the app altogether. Many users didn’t realise that it only affected how other companies (businesses) could contact users, and downloaded alternatives like the super-secure Signal messenger and the less secure (but feature-rich) Telegram.

Signal continues to ride the wave of anti-WhatsApp sentiments, crossing the 50 million download mark in the week after the backlash from the WhatsApp policy. It recently added WhatsApp features like an 'About' section, chat backgrounds and animated stickers. However, a new report from The Verge is now suggesting that Signal might be facing pushback from its own employees over the direction of the app’s development and fears that it might be used for dangerous and harmful purposes.

The report quotes Gregg Bernstein, a former Signal employee who left the organisation over his concerns, stating that Signal had not considered putting a policy in place regarding identifying and blocking out problematic users from the platform. According to him, the app’s founder had responded to an employee that the non-profit would respond if and when people (eg far-right extremists) started abusing Signal, which had raised concerns that there was no strategy in place to deal with potential misuse.Signal’s founder Moxie Marlinspike told The Verge that since the app was designed in such a way that employees could not see the content of any messages on the network, there was no requirement of a specific content policy. He also stated that Signal neither algorithmically amplified content like a social media network nor provided lots of opportunities for amplification. Marlinspike was likely referring to features found on WhatsApp or Telegram such as broadcast lists, or multiple message forwarding - features Signal does not currently offer.

According to the report, the employees are also concerned about the development of app features that they feel could be abused by users, such as payments inside the app (which are likely to be surveillance resistant and privacy friendly) and allowing users to sign up for the app without a phone number, choosing usernames instead.

The latter has been an extremely widely requested feature on the app, that has traditionally required a phone number - which makes it difficult for users with sensitive needs to communicate safely, or just to talk to a random stranger or acquaintance without sharing your phone number with them. There have also been no instances discovered so far, involving fascist or far-right organisations or other dangerous groups using Signal in public.

Marlinspike also stated that while it was important to him that Signal would not “become neutered in the pursuit of a false neutrality between good and bad actors” he would hire an employee to work on issues related to policy, trust and safety.

Google, since last year, has been working on adding offline translation capabilities to Google Lens. Now, the company has taken one major step in the direction by bringing offline translation capabilities to Google Lens on Android.

As per a report by 9To5 Google, to use this feature, users will have to download the latest version of Google Lens on their Android smartphones. The good news is that Google is rolling out this feature as a part of the server-side update so you don’t have to update the app manually to get this feature.

As far as the usage is concerned, once the app has been updated the first time users open the app there will be some adjustments to make. The report notes that when users open the app (after updating) they will have to open the Translate filter and click on the ‘Pairing’ pill under Google Lens to open the ‘Select Language’ screen. Here, they will see a ‘Tap to download’ prompt that will highlight a new button to various languages. This new button will enable users to download the specific language and on downloading it will be an indicator of the languages that the app will support in the offline translation mode.

Now, before the downloading begins, Google will show users how the offline language pack is and how much storage space is available on their smartphones. Once everything is okayed and downloading is complete, Google will show a checkmark on the downloaded languages.

The report also notes that Google Lens’ offline translate feature will start translating the text even before users have clicked the shutter button. The results will be overlaid on the live preview and there will be a bottom sheet that will show the translation occurred along with giving users the option to copy all of the translated text.

Telegram has launched group voice chats that are a bit like Discord rooms. Users can participate in always-on, group voice chats while they simultaneously do other things on the app. As per the company, the new update will allow any Telegram group to become a voice chat room. Telegram says that although Voice Chats are not group calls, “they can achieve similar goals”. Voice chats are now part of existing text chats, and operate as a persistent option to speak live with friends or family. It also gives them the freedom to drop in and drop out of a group voice chat as they please, just like in Discord.

As per a blog post by the Telegram team, since Voice Chats run in parallel to texting, it essentially adds another “layer of ephemeral talk to the group”. It means that after joining a voice chat, users can browse conversations, send texts and media like they generally do on the Telegram app, while staying connected to the voice chat. They can mute/ unmute the conversation through the microphone controls on the screen.

For example, if you have joined a group voice chat in your office and you hear that someone is taking a break to get lunch, you can quickly jump in to request that person to bring some for you as well.
Voice Chats features

Just like with Discord, another app that allows group voice chats, any group on Telegram can now become an always-on voice chat room. The company says that Voice Chats are not group calls, however, they can achieve similar goals. The groups that have active voice chats have a bar at the top that allows the members to know who is speaking at the moment. There are on-screen microphone controls that allow users to quickly mute/ unmute or end conversations.

Telegram users on Android will have a system-wide floating widget that shows microphone controls and who is currently talking even when the Telegram app is running in the background. There's also a menu that allows members in a group voice chat to invite more people. As per the company, Voice Chats can accommodate “a few thousand participants”. To start a voice chat admins can open any group and tap (⋯) or (⋮) > Start Voice Chat.

The new group voice chat feature will be available on the Telegram app for Android and iOS, and also on Telegram Desktop and the native macOS app.

Apart from the new group voice chat feature, Telegram has also got other additions and improvements. Android users can now move their app data from internal storage to external SD cards. The Android version has been updated with new animations for message button, chat folders, among others. As per the company, animated stickers on Telegram deliver 180 frame animations with infinite resolution in less than 50 KB, allowing them to load faster than before.

Android users on Telegram can now also edit a photo, and iOS users can tap the pen button to quickly edit and send back a photo they have received. iOS users can also enable Siri to read incoming messages aloud in their headphones. Additionally, to help identify potential new features and locate bugs within the app, Telegram has also launched a public Bug and Suggestion Platform.

Telegram will be rolling out this update gradually to allow users to suggest new features and report bugs.

Samsung rolled out One UI 2.5 for the Galaxy Note10 and S10 lineup last week, and now it's the Galaxy Tab S6 that's getting a taste of Samsung's latest custom Android skin.

The One UI 2.5 update comes with the September 2020 Android security patch and brings along Edge Panel, Voice Recorder, AR Zone, improved Multi-Window, and Wireless DeX. The last one allows you to launch DeX on compatible TVs without a cable.

Additionally, the new build now lets users request the Wi-Fi network password from a nearby device that's already connected to that network. Moreover, you'll also get to see the quality of the Wi-Fi connection - which will be labeled as Very Fast, Fast, Normal, or Slow - provided the router supports this feature.

The One UI 2.5 update is currently seeding in Germany for both the Wi-Fi and LTE models, sporting firmware version number T860XXU3BTI2 and T865XXU4BTI1, respectively.

The update should reach all units in Germany in a week or two, but those who can't wait for the update notification to pop-up on their tablet can head over to its Settings > Software updates menu to check for it manually.
