This is not a liability; it is a strategic asset. The critical question is whether the Nigerian state will deliberately convert this demographic advantage into a technology-driven economic force, or allow it to remain an underutilized statistic.
Globally, the engines of growth in the 21st century are no longer crude oil, mineral deposits, or even traditional manufacturing. They are knowledge, innovation, software, data, and digital infrastructure. Nations that dominate in technology dominate in productivity, security, and influence. For Nigeria, the pathway to sustainable prosperity lies in building a tech-focused economy powered by its young population.
Youth as Digital Capital
Young Nigerians are already demonstrating natural alignment with technology. From fintech startups and software development to digital marketing, content creation, and blockchain innovation, the youth are driving the country’s most vibrant economic sectors with minimal state support. What is missing is a coordinated national policy that treats technology skills as critical infrastructure, on the same level as roads, power, and ports.
