PoliticsRe: REA To Connect 1.1 Million Households By 2020 by franozx: 4:57pm On Nov 30, 2017
marryjesus:
The managing director/CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Mrs Damilola Ogunbiyi, has stated the rural electrification policy of the agency is targeted at achieving 60 per cent rural electrification by 2020 which is to connect 1.1 million rural households annually from 2015 to 2020.

The REA boss stated this at the Rural Electrification Fund (REF) Stakeholders’ Workshop in Abuja yesterday which aimed to educate Nigerians on energy efficiency.

Speaking on the topic ‘The Off-Grid Electrification Strategy’, Ogunbiyi said it involves increase electricity access to rural and undeserved clusters across the country. She added that the strategy is also to fast-track development initiatives to achieve the overall objective of the Federal Government’s Economic and Recovery Growth Plan (ERGP) and the Power Sector Recovery Programme (PSRP). She also stated that “the off-grid electrification strategy is to complement the national grid supply by developing a decentralized approach for power generation, distribution and metering to underserved and unserved areas.”

According to her, the Federal Government developed the PSRP in collaboration with the World Bank Group which objectives are to restore the power’s sector financial viability, to improve power supply reliability to meet growing demand and strengthen the sector’s institutional framework and increase transparency.

“The PSRP is a series of policy actions, operational, governance and financial interventions to be implemented by the Federal Government over the next five years to restore the financial viability of Nigeria’s power sector, improve transparency and service delivery. It is also to resolve consumer complaints, reduce losses and energy theft and to reset the Nigerian electricity supply industry for future growth,” she said.

She added that primary objective of the agency is to make adequate access to electricity across all the regions in the country.
