How exactly have they discerned the voice of God from their own thoughts?

So many questions and possibilities, so it's best not to rely on such people and their 'visions', leave such important decisions to your own deductions, experiences, and thinking devices.

But if you're hell bent on it they should give you a tangible reason rather than the typical cop out that is to just tell you to 'pray about it'.
