A 28-year-old school bus driver, Onome Lucky Ughagha, is now in police custody after an intelligence-led operation in Sapele, Delta State, over the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of a 14-year-old female student—and the collection of ₦503,000 in ransom from her father.

The Delta State Police Command said the incident was reported at the Sapele Area Command on 20 October 2026 by the victim’s father. According to the report, the suspect allegedly abducted the girl while she was preparing to leave for school. He later contacted her father, demanded ₦503,000 and threatened to kill her if the ransom was not paid.

After the ransom was paid, the victim was allegedly abandoned along Oton Road, Sapele, where she was reunited with her family in a traumatised condition. Police said she had allegedly been brutally raped by the suspect.

Following the report, the Commissioner of Police issued a marching order and guiding directives to the area commander to ensure the fleeing suspect was arrested and brought to justice. Operatives of the Sapele Area Command immediately commenced investigations, while the victim was taken to a medical facility for examination and treatment. The school principal and vice principal were also invited for questioning as efforts intensified to apprehend the suspect, who had abandoned the school bus and fled.

Acting on credible intelligence, the operatives traced the suspect to his hideout in the Ajimele area of Sapele, where he was arrested on 23 October 2026. During preliminary investigation, the suspect confessed to his involvement in the crime, police said. He is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Asaba, for further investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, psc, mnips, condemned the incident and reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting children from all forms of violence and exploitation. He assured that investigations would be thorough and that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice. The CP also called on school authorities, parents and transport operators to exercise greater vigilance in safeguarding children, stressing that the safety of every child entrusted to their care must remain paramount.

Suspect Allegedly Used JAMB Registrar’s Identity to Solicit Millions in Fake Contract Deals

ABUJA — The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a 32-year-old suspected member of an online fraud syndicate allegedly using the identity of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Segun Aina, to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians through fake contract offers.

The suspect, identified as Nwogba Arinze, was arrested on 27 August 2026 in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, following an intelligence-led investigation launched after a petition by JAMB authorities to the Inspector-General of Police.

Police investigators said the syndicate allegedly created a fake WhatsApp profile using the photograph of the JAMB Registrar and a telephone number which was subsequently advertised on LinkedIn, directing members of the public to contact the supposed Registrar via WhatsApp.

FAKE JAMB REGISTRAR, FAKE CONTRACT — AND A DEAD MAN’S BANK ACCOUNT

According to the police investigation report, the suspects allegedly presented themselves as the JAMB Registrar and offered lucrative government contracts to unsuspecting individuals.

In one of the interactions monitored by investigators, the impostor allegedly claimed that the Federal Ministry of Education had approved the supply of 200 HP laptops as part of a digitisation programme.

The alleged fraudsters reportedly requested company registration documents from their target before introducing a supposed Personal Assistant to the Registrar.

Investigators further alleged that the syndicate demanded ₦900,000 initially, purportedly to bribe officials in the Minister of Education’s office, before allegedly requesting an additional ₦3 million.

But the most striking discovery came when police traced the bank account provided for the alleged payments.

The account, investigators discovered, belonged to Edeh Chimezie Benedict — a man who had reportedly died in April 2026.

Police said the account and ATM card of the deceased were allegedly being controlled by the suspects and used to facilitate the fraudulent transactions.

INVESTIGATION LEADS POLICE ACROSS THREE STATES

Following the petition from JAMB, operatives of the Police Intelligence, Operations and Investigation Unit at JAMB National Headquarters commenced an intelligence-led investigation.

The allegedly fraudulent telephone number was analysed by the IGP Tracking Team, leading investigators to telephone contacts linked to Nasarawa and Katsina States.

The investigation subsequently expanded to the FCT, Nasarawa, Anambra and Ebonyi States.

Several individuals were initially arrested during the investigation. However, police said some were released after investigations established that they were victims or that there was insufficient evidence linking them directly to the alleged conspiracy.

Investigators eventually traced the bank account to Ebonyi State.

Police arrested Edeh Peace Ogechi, who investigators said was the mother of the account holder, and another individual identified as Edeh Gift.

According to the investigation report, Edeh Peace Ogechi told detectives that her son, Edeh Chimezie Benedict, had died in April and that his ATM cards and SIM cards were subsequently in the possession of Nwogba Arinze.

SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER GOING INTO HIDING

Following the arrests and developments in the investigation, police said Nwogba Arinze went into hiding.

He was subsequently arrested during a night operation in Abakaliki on 27 August 2026.

According to investigators, police recovered from him an Access Bank ATM card linked to the deceased’s account and an Airtel SIM card.

The suspect allegedly admitted giving the deceased's bank account details to another suspect, Nnabuife Nwekpa, who is currently at large.

Police said Nwokpa allegedly directed Arinze to withdraw money paid into the account and keep it pending further instructions.

Arinze, however, reportedly denied knowledge of the online fraud.

FAKE IDENTITY USED TO DAMAGE JAMB REGISTRAR’S REPUTATION

The investigation established, according to police, that the real JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, never authorised the use of his photograph, name or identity for any contract solicitation or online communication with members of the public.

Investigators also established that the Registrar had not published the telephone number used by the alleged fraudsters on any social media platform.

Police said the suspects allegedly used the Registrar's identity on WhatsApp and Truecaller and advertised the number on LinkedIn in an attempt to convince members of the public that they were dealing directly with the JAMB Registrar.

The police report said the alleged scheme was designed not only to obtain money from victims but also to tarnish the reputation of the JAMB Registrar and undermine the integrity of the Board.

POLICE: SUSPECTS MAY FACE CYBERCRIME CHARGES

At the conclusion of the preliminary investigation, the police said a prima facie case had been established against Nwogba Arinze and his alleged accomplices for offences including criminal conspiracy, online impersonation, identity theft and online fraud.

The investigating team recommended that Arinze be charged to court and prosecuted.

Police also recommended that necessary legal steps be taken against Nnabuife Nwekpa, who remains at large, including obtaining a court order for his arrest and declaring him wanted where legally appropriate.

The case file has been recommended for forwarding to the Nigeria Police Force Legal Department for legal advice and possible prosecution before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

POLICE WARNING TO NIGERIANS

The development has once again highlighted the growing sophistication of online fraudsters who exploit the names, photographs and official identities of public figures to deceive members of the public.

Members of the public are urged to verify contract offers, payment requests and purported communications from government officials through official channels before making any financial commitment.

The Nigeria Police Force also urged Nigerians to be particularly suspicious of individuals demanding money under the guise of “facilitation fees,” “bribes,” “approval fees” or payments to secure government contracts.
