AgricultureHow To Ensure Catfish Fries Survival And Mortalities Prevention by funnyvideobase(op): 6:56pm On Apr 13, 2025
How to ensure catfish fries survival and mortalities prevention after first 2 weeks of hatchery

Ensuring the survival of catfish fry during the critical period of their first two weeks in the hatchery requires meticulous attention to environmental conditions, feeding practices, and overall management. Water quality plays a pivotal role in fry survival, as catfish are highly sensitive to changes in their environment during this stage.

The temperature of the water must be maintained between 28–30°C to optimize metabolic and growth processes. Dissolved oxygen levels should consistently remain between 5–7 mg/L, as oxygen depletion can quickly lead to stress and death.

Regular monitoring of pH, which should stay within a neutral to slightly alkaline range of 6.5–8.5, and the control of toxic substances like ammonia and nitrite are essential to prevent harmful buildups.

Partial water changes—about 20–30%—are recommended every few days to maintain cleanliness and prevent the accumulation of organic waste.

Feeding practices during this stage are equally critical. Catfish fry rely on high-protein, easily digestible food. Once the yolk sac is fully absorbed, live feed such as brine shrimp (Artemia) or micro worms is ideal for the first few days, as it mimics their natural diet and provides essential nutrients.

Gradually transitioning to finely powdered artificial feeds after about a week is crucial for their development and acclimatization to hatchery conditions.

Feeding should be done frequently, in small amounts, at least 4–6 times a day to ensure the fry receive adequate nutrition while preventing overfeeding, which can deteriorate water quality.

Overcrowding is a significant factor that can lead to increased stress and higher mortality rates. Maintaining appropriate stocking densities—generally 100–200 fry per liter—is recommended, with gradual reductions as the fry grow.

Fry must also be handled with care to avoid unnecessary stress or physical damage, as they are extremely delicate during this phase.

Regular observation is necessary to detect any signs of disease or abnormal behavior early. Prophylactic treatments, such as mild salt baths or antifungal agents, can help prevent common issues like fungal infections, which are prevalent in fry populations.

In addition to physical and nutritional needs, maintaining proper light cycles and providing adequate shelter are important to reduce stress and promote healthy growth. A balanced light cycle of 12–16 hours per day encourages regular feeding patterns, while plants or artificial shelters offer hiding spaces that help fry feel secure.

Gradual acclimatization to larger tanks or ponds is essential as the fry mature to ensure they can adapt to new environments without undue stress.

The key to reducing mortality rates lies in maintaining consistent conditions and addressing potential issues promptly. Regular monitoring, coupled with preventive measures and proper care, creates a stable environment where catfish fry can thrive during these crucial early weeks of life. AgricultureBenefits Of Ph Meter For Catfish Growth And Development. by funnyvideobase(op): 11:31am On Apr 09, 2025
Benefits of pH Meter for Catfish Growth and Development.

A pH meter is a valuable tool for catfish farming as it helps monitor and maintain optimal water conditions, which are critical for the growth and development of catfish. Here are the key benefits:

Optimizes Water Quality: Catfish thrive in a specific pH range, typically between 6.5 and 7.5. A pH meter allows you to measure the acidity or alkalinity of the water accurately. Maintaining this range ensures a stable environment that supports healthy growth and reduces stress on the fish.

Enhances Growth Rates: When water pH is within the ideal range, catfish can efficiently metabolize food and absorb nutrients. Extreme pH levels (too acidic or too alkaline) can slow digestion and stunt growth, while consistent monitoring with a pH meter helps avoid these issues.

Prevents Stress and Disease: Fluctuations in pH can weaken catfish immune systems, making them more susceptible to diseases like bacterial infections or parasites. Regular use of a pH meter helps detect and correct imbalances before they harm the fish.

Improves Oxygen Availability: pH levels influence dissolved oxygen in the water, which catfish need for respiration. A pH meter helps ensure the water remains suitable for adequate oxygen levels, especially in high-density farming systems.

Supports Reproduction: For breeding catfish, stable pH is essential. Sudden changes can disrupt spawning behavior or harm fry (young fish). Monitoring with a pH meter ensures conditions remain favorable for successful reproduction and fry survival.

By preventing poor water quality issues, a pH meter reduces the risk of fish mortality and the need for costly treatments or interventions, ultimately improving farm profitability.

To monitor your water pH, its expected you have a ph test strips or a digital pH meter to monitor and manage your water pH and balance the pH.

AgricultureImportance Of Oyster Shell For Your Catfish Pond Water Problem by funnyvideobase(op): 2:11pm On Apr 05, 2025
Importance of oyster shell for your catfish pond water problem

Oyster shells can be a valuable addition to your catfish pond for several reasons:

Buffering water pH:
Catfish thrive in slightly alkaline water (pH 6.5-7.5).

Oyster shells are a natural source of calcium carbonate, which helps to buffer the water pH and prevent it from becoming too acidic. This is important because acidic water can stress catfish and make them more susceptible to disease. Also it can kill them instantly.

Improving water quality: Oyster shells have a high surface area, which provides a substrate for beneficial bacteria to grow. These bacteria help to break down organic matter, such as uneaten food and fish waste, which can improve water quality and clarity.

Providing calcium for catfish:
Oyster shells are a good source of calcium, which is essential for bone growth and development in catfish. This is especially important for young catfish/fingerlings which are still growing.

Reducing the risk of off-flavors:

Off-flavors in catfish can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor water quality and the presence of certain algae. Oyster shells can help to improve water quality and reduce the growth of algae, which can help to prevent off-flavors.

Oyster shells can be a beneficial addition to your catfish pond.

However, it is important to use them correctly.

Monitor your water quality: Be sure to monitor your water pH levels regularly.

If you notice any changes, adjust the amount of oyster shells you are using.

This striking visualization we see two tanks filled with water from a salty water river. The tank on the right also contains oysters shells.

Over the course of 2 hours those oysters filtered all of the algae out of the water, balanced pH, increased dissolved oxygen rate, cleared impurites, and produced pure water.

With oyster shell balancing of water pH, fishes tend to grow rapidly, healthy and fast.

A right water pH from 6.5 to 7.5 decrease the time it takes for fishes to reach full maturity, the right pH balance deter or prevents and makes water unsuitable for diseases and microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses to grow in pond, hereby preventing disease outbreak.

To monitor your water pH, its expected you have a digital pH meter to monitor and manage your water pH and balance the pH.

AgricultureLowering High Water Ph In Catfish Farming Using Papaya (paw Paw) Stems And Leave by funnyvideobase(op): 7:45pm On Mar 09, 2025
Lowering high water pH in catfish farming using papaya (paw paw) stems and leaves.

Papaya leaves and stems is a natural, cost-effective method that leverages the organic acids and tannins released during decomposition.

Follow step-by-step process to implement this method safely and effectively:

1. Preparation of Papaya Material

Harvest: Collect fresh papaya stems and leaves (avoid pesticide-treated plants).

Chop/Dry:
Chop the stems and leaves into small pieces to increase surface area.

Sun-dry them for 1–2 days to reduce excess moisture (optional but speeds up decomposition).

2. Application to the Pond

Direct Application:
Place the chopped papaya material in mesh bags or permeable sacks.

Submerge the bags in the pond, ideally near areas with water flow (e.g., near aerators or inlet pipes) to distribute acids evenly.

Alternative Method:

Soak the papaya material in a separate container of water for 24–48 hours to create a "tea." Add this liquid to the pond gradually.

3. Dosage Guidelines

Initial Dose:

Start with 100–200 grams of dried papaya material per 1,000 liters of water (adjust based on pond size and initial pH).

Adjustments:

Test pH every 6–12 hours after application. If pH remains high, add more material incrementally.

Avoid overuse, as excessive organic matter can deplete oxygen or cause ammonia spikes.

4. Monitoring and Safety

pH Testing:

Use a reliable pH meter or test kit to monitor levels daily. Target a pH range of 6.5–7.5 for catfish (optimal: 7.0–7.5).

Oxygen Levels:

Ensure proper aeration, as decomposing plant matter consumes oxygen. Use aerators to maintain dissolved oxygen (DO) >5 mg/L.

Ammonia Check:

Monitor ammonia levels (decomposition releases organic nitrogen). If ammonia rises above 0.5 mg/L, perform a partial water change.

5. Benefits of Papaya

Organic Acids: Papaya releases tannins and weak acids (e.g., citric acid) during decomposition, which gently lower pH.

Antimicrobial Properties: Papain (an enzyme in papaya) may help reduce harmful bacteria in the pond.

Cost-Effective: Suitable for small-scale farmers avoiding synthetic chemicals.

6. Limitations and Tips

Slow Action: Papaya works gradually (24–72 hours). For urgent pH reduction, pair with diluted vinegar (1–2 mL per 100 liters) as a short-term fix.

Buffering Capacity: Hard water (high alkalinity) resists pH changes. Test alkalinity first; if >200 ppm, combine papaya with peat moss.

Replace Material: Refresh papaya bags every 7–10 days as they decompose fully.

Hands on The Job.

Day 1: Test pH (e.g., pH 9.0). Add 150g dried papaya per 1,000 liters.

Day 2: Retest pH. If pH drops to 8.2, add 50g more papaya material.

Day 3: Check pH and ammonia. Maintain aeration and adjust as needed.

- Avoid overloading the pond with organic matter to prevent oxygen crashes.

- Always prioritize gradual pH adjustments to avoid stressing fish.

- Combine with regular water changes (10–20% weekly) to stabilize water quality.

Using papaya stems and leaves, you can create a sustainable, low-cost solution for pH management in catfish ponds while minimizing reliance on expensive chemicals.

AgricultureEffects Of Poor Water Ph On Catfish by funnyvideobase(op): 7:22am On Mar 07, 2025
Effects of Poor Water pH on Catfish

Catfish, like most fish, have a specific range of water pH they thrive in. Deviations outside this range can have various negative consequences, impacting their health, growth, and even survival.

1. Stress and Reduced Immunity:

Acidic water (pH below 6.5): This can cause stress, damage gill tissues, and make catfish more susceptible to diseases and parasites.

Alkaline water (pH above 7.5): This can also cause stress, disrupt ammonia excretion, and affect their ability to breathe efficiently.

2. Impaired Growth and Development:

Both acidic and alkaline water: Can stunt growth, reduce appetite, and negatively impact reproduction.

Specifically, acidic water: Can interfere with mineral absorption, leading to skeletal deformities.

AgricultureHow To Neutralize Acidic Well/tap Water To Prevent Death Of Catfish by funnyvideobase(op): 5:00pm On Mar 02, 2025
How to Neutralize Acidic Well/Tap Water to prevent death of catfish

1). Test your well water first, for at least: pH, acidity or alkalinity.

Use soda ash or Calcium Carbonate or magnesium oxide for very low pH.

What causes acid water anyway?

Well, common causes for acidic water are from acid rainfall. Mostly due to atmospheric carbon dioxide, and we’re seeing more acid rainfall because he CO2 levels are increasing.

It comes from other airborne pollutants as well – coal burning, fossil fuels, vehicles – run-off from pollution which is another way it can happen.

But mostly it’s from the rain. So pure water has a pH of 7 which is neutral.

However, natural unpolluted rainwater actually has a pH of 5.6.

So it’s naturally a little acidic. The acidity of rainwater comes from the natural presence of carbon dioxide, in some cases nitric oxide, and some sulfur dioxide from coal burning.

CO2 is present in the greatest concentration in air, and therefore contributes the most to the natural acidity of rainwater.

The rain comes down, and eventually gets into the groundwater where where we have our wells, where you pull out the water from. If you groundwater is in an area where the natural rock or fractured rock is limestone, or maybe sand, or some other mineral, it has a huge effect on whether that water would be acidic when you pull it out.

For instance, if you’re in an area where the groundwater is sitting in limestone, well it’s getting neutralized right there.

Acidic water dissolves some magnesium or calcium, so you have hard water but no longer acidic, corrosive water.

But if you’re in an area where it’s granite, sand, or some other mineral that isn’t going to contribute pH buffering into the water, then the water often comes out of the ground really good quality but it’s acidic.

So we see this very commonly.

What to do?

Well, fortunately, it’s very easy to fix. The common systems we use to treat low pH are calcium carbonate.

There are different grades of it. The type that we recommend is this high purity kind that just add some natural calcium into the water.

That works if your pH is 6 and say 6.9, which is the most common pH we run into with some customers.

Sometimes the pH is less than 6, between 5 and 6. Then we’ll use a blend of calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide.

The first thing to do is to figure out what your water chemistry is.

Do a simple water test and you want to know at a minimum, what the pH of the water is. Again, that’s a scale from 1 to 14. Lime juice has a pH of 2. In other words, if its acidic, it has a low pH.

Vinegar is acidic, that is a low pH.

Then if is alkaline substitute like baking soda, it has a high pH.

So you want to know what the pH of the water is, what the hardness is, what the total dissolved solids are, and the alkalinity.

It is good to have those 4 things tested at a lab or you can test it yourself.

It’s often a good idea to at least do one pH test on site because the pH can rise.

For instance, say you want to get your water tested and you filled the sample three quarters of the way so there is some air in it.

Then you take it to the lab, and they let it sit around for a day before they test it, the pH will be a little bit lower because one of the causes of low pH is dissolved carbon dioxide in the water.

The dissolved carbon dioxide creates carbonic acid.

If you were to spray this water in the tank, let it sit around, or put it in the glass, it will naturally lower the pH.

So it’s very important to do at least one pH test at the site. It’s easy to do and you can also have a test by a lab.

Those are the main things you want your water to get tested for.

There are some cases when Calcium carbonate or Magnesium don’t work well.

That’s why I’m going to talk about this next one, which is soda ash.

Soda ash has done really well too.

If your pH is less than 5, say 4 or 4.5, then you got to add a lot of magnesium oxide or calcium carbonate because it doesn’t work that well at that low pH.

You have to use a lot of magnesium oxide or calcium carbonate to get it to work but your water is then hard.

It adds a lot of hardness to water.

The other thing is, it doesn’t really work that well, we found.

In the beginning, the pH is a little high and then after a while, the pH drops or if you use a lot of water during the day, you can get alot of acid water.

So generally if your pH is the less than 5, we recommend soda ash.

Soda ash is sodium carbonate, a food grade sodium carbonate.

Sodium bicarbonate is baking soda and sodium carbonate is pretty much like baking soda.

It looks like baking soda but it’s a special potable water grade.

It’s a powder and basically, you mix it up with warm water and pour it into a solution tank which might be 15-30 gallons in size.

FOR YOU TO TREAT YOUR WATER YOU MUST FIRST KNOW YOUR WATER PH READING.

NOTE: SPECIFIC WATER PH READING REQUIRE THE SPECIFIC TREATMENT YOU USE, THAT’S THE BENEFIT OF HAVING YOUR OWN DIGITAL PH METER.

YOU CAN ACTUALLY TEST YOUR WATER YOURSELF, NO NEED TO GO TO A LAB.

AgricultureImportance Of PH For Water Quality In Fish Farming. by funnyvideobase(op): 7:17am On Mar 02, 2025
Importance of PH for Water Quality in Fish Farming.

Fish perform all their bodily functions in water. Because fish are totally dependent upon water to breathe, feed and grow, excrete wastes, maintain a salt balance, and reproduce, understanding the physical and chemical qualities of water is critical to successful fish farming. To a great extent water determines the success or failure of an fish farming operation.

Very high (greater than 7.5) or very low (less than 6.5) pH values are unsuitable for most aquatic organisms. Young fish and immature stages of aquatic insects are extremely sensitive to pH levels below 6.5 and may die at these low pH values.

High pH levels (7.6 - 14) can harm fish by denaturing cellular membranes. Changes in pH can also affect aquatic life indirectly by altering other aspects of water chemistry.

Low pH levels accelerate the release of metals from rocks in soil or sediments in the stream.

These metals can affect a fish's metabolism and the fish's ability to take water in.

High pH Levels Effect

At high pH (>7.5) most ammonium in water is converted to toxic ammonia (NH3) which can kill fish.

Moreover, cyanobacterial toxins can also significantly influence fish populations.

NOTE: One critical parameter is pH:

Not only for the health of the fish, but for the bacteria have that pollute the water as well as nitrifiers that remove excess nutrients.

pH is important in fish farming as a measure of the acidity of the water or soil.

Fish cannot survive in waters below pH 6.5 and above pH 7.5 for long periods.

The optimum pH for fish is between 6.5 and 7.5.

Fish will grow poorly and reproduction will be affected at consistently higher or lower pH levels.

Death is certain. Bad water ph is 80 % responsible for most death in catfish rearing.

Beware of the Deadly Scam in Nigeria: Don’t Fall Victim to Assassination Extortion

A sinister scam is spreading like wildfire in Ekiti, preying on innocent lives. Fraudsters are cashing in on people’s fears, claiming they’ve been hired to assassinate them.

Scammers call victims, claiming they’ve received a contract to kill them. To cancel the contract, they demand payment into a provided account. The threat is real, and the fear is palpable. However, this is a clever ploy to extort money.

Victims who pay up may think they’ve escaped death, but they’ve only fueled the scammer’s greed. The scammer may demand more money or use personal information for further exploitation.

Protection Tips:

Be cautious of unexpected calls with assassination threats.

Never pay money to cancel a fake contract.
