Paris St Germain were never going to start as favourites against Chelsea in their Champions League last 16 clash but Saturday's catalogue of injuries has damaged the French champions' chances even further at the worst possible time. PSG were cruising to a 2-0 victory against Caen in Ligue 1 but a series of injuries meant they finished the game with nine men and conceded two late goals in a 2-2 draw that left them third in the table. Among those injured were utility back Marquinhos and forward Lucas, who were set to start the first leg against Chelsea at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, a repeat of last year's quarter-final which the London club won on away goals. Gregory van der Wiel and Ezequiel Lavezzi are likely to deputise but manager Laurent Blanc will also be without the injured Yohan Cabaye and Serge Aurier. These problems only put more pressure on Blanc, who will feel further heat from PSG's Qatari owners if the club fail to qualify. He is adopting a brave face, though. "We were already in difficulty like this before the first game against Barcelona (in the group stages) and we managed to pull through," said Blanc, who is at least hopeful that Blaise Matuidi will be fit after picking up a knock against Caen. Last September, PSG beat Barcelona 3-1 while they were without Lavezzi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Jose Mourinho, Chelsea's manager, remains wary of the Ibrahimovic threat even though he has been far from his best this season, just like PSG. The Swede, however, did score only his fourth goal from open play this season against Caen. "Zlatan is a beast," Chelsea striker Diego Costa told Sport Magazine. "He is among the best strikers in football history. David Luiz says playing with Ibrahimovic was a major factor in him moving to PSG from Chelsea. "Of course Mourinho knows him well from Inter and will have a plan to try to stop him but when Zlatan is on form he is unplayable," David Luiz told the Mail on Sunday. Chelsea had an unexpected weekend off having exited the FA Cup against third tier Bradford City and the Premier League leaders have no major injury concerns as they turn their attention to making progress in Europe. Another factor working in their favour. "Jose Mourinho is a genius. He lost his Cup game and gave himself one more week to prepare for the return leg," Blanc joked with reporters. - See more at: http://silverbirdtv.com/news-sports/8061-injury-hit-psg-prepare-chelsea#sthash.QTOZuEzO.dpuf |
A Hong Kong housewife has been found guilty of imprisoning and abusing a young Indonesian maid whose case has prompted protests and calls for reform of the city's laws governing domestic workers. Over several months last year, Erwiana Sulistyaningsih was kept as a prisoner in the home of Law Want-tung, a 44-year-old mother of two who regularly deprived her of food, sleep and payment for long hours of grueling work. After the verdict, Erwiana thanked her supporters and called for the governments of Hong Kong and Indonesia to do more to protect the rights of migrant workers. "What I hope together with my fellow domestic workers are just fair and humane treatment and for people to stop treating us like slaves," she said. Law was convicted of grievous bodily harm, common assault, and failing to pay Erwiana's wages or give her statutory rest days. Sentencing has been deferred until February 27 to give the defense time to compile character references and psychological reports. - See more at: http://silverbirdtv.com/news/8015-hong-kong-court-finds-housewife-guilty-abusing-young-maid#sthash.bJ2Q5YOK.dpuf |

The Nigerian Army said it did not have the original, certified true copy or statement of results of retired General Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Candidate for the February general elections. The Director of Army Public Relations, Olajide Laleye, said this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday. Mr. Laleye said that the entry made on the Nigerian Army Form 199A at the point of documentation after Buhari was commissioned as an officer, indicated that the former Head of State obtained the West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1961. “With credits in relevant subjects: English Language, Geography, History, Health Science, Hausa and a pass in English Literature. “Neither the original copy, certified true copy (CTC) nor statement of result of Major-.Gen. Mohammadu Buhari‘s WASC result is in his personal file. Mr. Laleye said the army holds the retired senior officer in high esteem and respect and would not be a party to any controversy surrounding his eligibility for any political office. He said that suffice to state that Mr. Buhari rose steadily to the enviable rank of Major General before becoming the Head of State of the country in December 1983. “The media hype on the retired Buhari’s credentials as well as numerous requests made by individuals and cooperate bodies to the Nigerian Army on this issue have necessitated that we provide the facts as contained in the retired senior officer’s service records. “Records available indicate that Buhari applied to join the military as a form six student of the Provincial Secondary School, Katsina, on Oct. 18, 1961. “His application was duly endorsed by the principal of the school, who also wrote a report on him and recommended him to be suitable for military commission. “It is a practice in the Nigerian Army that before candidates are shortlisted for commissioning into the officers’ cadre of the service, the selection board verifies the original copies of credentials as presented. “There is no available record to show that this process was followed in the 1960s,” Mr. Laleye said. On the recent CNN report concerning issues of kitting, equipment, corruption and medical treatment, Mr. Laleye said there was no Army in the world where personnel did not purchase additional uniforms and kits to augment those officially assigned to them. “Accordingly, the army has not failed to issue uniforms and kits to its personnel periodically. “Like other armies, the Nigerian Army has over the years, established ordinance shops in all its barracks and cantonments where uniforms and kits are sold at subsidized prices to its personnel from allowances already provided in their pay slips. “Similarly the Nigerian Army has a very functional healthcare delivery system in the country. It fully subscribes to the National Health Insurance scheme (NHIS) and this is functional in all its health facilities. The army spokesperson said that the army had made undoubted operational gains in the North-East of recent, thereby rubbishing the claim that Boko Haram had out-gunned it. He said that the CNN would do well if it beamed its searchlight on the atrocities of Boko Haram terrorists against the innocent and defenseless Nigerians, rather than the Nigerian Army. Mr. Laleye said the army would remain focused on its mission to rid Nigeria of terrorism and insurgency. To that end, he said, the army had commenced the implementation of the “extensive operational , administrative and logistical decisions’’ reached during the 2014 Chief of Army staff Annual Conference. He said in no distant future, Nigerians would begin to see very positive results in terms of security, particularly in the North-East and the nation. - See more at: http://silverbirdtv.com/news/we-don-t-have-buhari-s-original-certificates-nigerian-army#sthash.Gmt8R1ca.dpuf |

The Nigerian government has announced a reduction in the fuel price of petrol from N97 per litre to N87 per litre. The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, said at a press conference at the presidential villa, Abuja, on Sunday that the new price regime would take effect at midnight today. Mrs. Alison-Madueke said the N10 reduction in fuel price was necessitated by the reduction in crude oil prices in the international market. The Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency [PPPRA] and the Department of Petroleum Resources [DPR] have been asked to enforce strict compliance with the new pricing regime as soon as it becomes effective, the minister said. The new measure is a reversal of government’s policy on the matter. The Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had insisted on December 17 that Nigeria would not reduce the pump price of fuel despite falling oil prices at the international market, until the revenue crisis occasioned by the dwindling oil rates is over. Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said at the time that the decision to review fuel price either upwards or downwards would only be taken after the current crisis in global oil prices had been settled. But five days ago, on December 13, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, called on the government to implement immediate price reduction on fuel products to reflect the downscaling in global oil prices. Speaking through his campaign organization, the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Mr. Buhari asked the government to “stop stealing from Nigerians and allow them enjoy the relief that has come to consumers of petroleum products globally”. The APC candidate had said, “The price of diesel which has been deregulated since 2009 still sells at the pump price of N150 and N170 per litre, the same pump price when the international benchmark per barrel of crude was over $100. Now that the international benchmark has dropped to $47.5 (USD) per barrel as at Monday, we ask: where is the deregulation and the relief which it ought to bring to local consumers of diesel? “For the Nigerian consumers, unfortunately the collapse of crude oil price since October 2014 has not translated into any change in diesel, kerosene and PMS prices across the country. “We challenge the federal government to reconcile the information on the website of the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency, indicating the maximum open market price of diesel per litre in December 2014 as being at N111.6 and the fact that the price has come down to less than $50 (USD) as at Monday. “We want to posit that that the maximum indicative benchmark open consumers of diesel should pay is at a margin below N100 per litre. Therefore, Nigerians are being short-changed by about N50 to N70 on every litre of diesel sold by government.” The Trade Union Congress [TUC] had earlier on January 5 asked the government to take advantage of the falling oil prices to reduce retail prices of petroleum products. The TUC had argued that the best time to review the retail pump price of petrol was now, in line with the argument put forward by government in 2012 when the price was adjusted from N70 per litre to N97. - See more at: http://silverbirdtv.com/economy-news/nigerian-government-reduces-fuel-price#sthash.txEn7kqA.dpuf |
Yet another United States woman has fallen victim to a love scam initiated by a local fraudster, it emerged. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission reported it had recovered US$23 886 for Jolanta Kasza, based in New York. She was allegedly fleeced $64 000 by a suspected Nigerian Fraudster, Ndekwu Jindu (alias Dr Daniel Coffman) in the scam. Kasza allegedly met Coffman online in June 2012, and the fraudster introduced himself as self employed Caucasian pharmacist. Impressed by the profile, Kasza is said to have fallen in love with both agreeing to get married. According to her, in the course of the affair, the suspect at different times requested for money under various guise. Before she realised that she was dealing with a con artist, she had lost the money. She consequently petitioned the EFCC, which through discreet investigation recovered $23 886. The agency said it was in the process of repatriating the fund to the victim. Earlier this week, EFCC said it had helped an American woman, Margaret Sanders, recover $2 000 she had been swindled by a Nigerian in a love scam. - CAJ News - See more at: http://silverbirdtv.com/news/more-us-women-fall-victim-romantic-love-scam#sthash.JAvWNCxm.dpuf

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commended its Presidential Candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan and that of the APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, for signing the pact on non-violent elections ahead of the 2015 general elections. The commendation is contained in a statement issued by Olisa Metuh, the PDP National Publicity Secretary on Thursday in Abuja. Metuh said the signing of the pact was in line with the commitment of the party to the peace and progress of the nation at all times. He said the PDP had in the last one week of campaigns, demonstrated its resolve for peaceful polls by ensuring that its members adhered strictly to its code of conduct on violence-free polls. He added that “it is timely therefore to urge the leadership of the APC to move beyond signing the peace pact to genuinely taking practical steps to rein in members.” He noted that the PDP had emphatically demonstrated its unflinching resolve for peaceful campaigns and urged the APC to do same. “We advise the APC to take a cue and urgently forestall plans by miscreants acting in its name to disrupt PDP campaign rallies in some parts of the North,” the national publicity secretary said. The media reports that President Jonathan, Buhari and other party presidential candidates had on Wednesday, January 14, signed a peace pact on non-violent 2015 elections at a sensitisation workshop organised for all political parties in Abuja. The workshop was organised by the Office of the National Security Adviser to the President, in collaboration with the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Inter-Party Affairs. http://silverbirdtv.com/news/pdp-commends-president-jonathan-buhari-peace-pact
