Science/TechnologyXbox Is Testing Accessible Chat Options Like Transcription And Speech Synthesis by gabrielboone(op): 10:15pm On May 14, 2021
Microsoft has announced new text-to-speech and speech-to-text features for Xbox Party Chat, which aim to help make communication on the platform more accessible. The features are currently being tested through the Xbox Insider program.

The speech-to-text feature puts a window on the screen with automatic transcriptions of what people in the voice chat are saying, along with an indicator of whether the message was typed or spoken aloud. This could help people who are hard of hearing to participate in the chat, even if the other participants are speaking instead of typing.

The text-to-speech feature goes the other way, reading out a user’s typed messages for the rest of the party chat members to hear. The user is also able to choose from a list of voices to better customize what their messages sound like to others.

Microsoft has recently been pushing accessibility with Xbox: it started a program earlier this year to help developers make their games more accessible, and it has made the Xbox Adaptive Controller to help gamers with a wide range of motor abilities. It’s good to see them continuing that work, especially around voice chat.

If you’re an Xbox Insider, you can enable the features by going to Settings > Ease of Access > Game and chat transcription, or by going to Options > Ease of Access settings while in a chat.

Science/TechnologyFacebook Teaches Machines What To Forget To Improve AI by gabrielboone(op): 10:07pm On May 14, 2021
Facebook is teaching its artificial intelligence systems to forget irrelevant information so that computers can complete tasks more quickly and efficiently, the company said Friday.

The social network relies on AI to detect harmful content, such as hate speech and graphic violence, to rank content in its News Feed and carry out other tasks. With 2.85 billion people logging into the social network every month, Facebook has been relying more heavily on AI.

Facebook's research scientists said in a blog post that it created a new method known as Expire-Span that teaches AI how to forget large volumes of irrelevant information. Each piece of information gets an expiration date, researchers said, freeing up a computer's memory space so it can focus on the necessary details for completing a task. Expire-Span predicts the most relevant information, Facebook said.

"As an example, if the model is training to perform a word prediction task, it's possible to teach AI to remember rare words such as names, but forget very common, filler words such as the and of," Facebook's research scientists Angela Fan and Sainbayar Sukhbaatar wrote in a blog post.

Facebook said that with Expire-Span, the company is one step closer to getting computers to retain memories like humans do. The human brain naturally preserves important information rather than every single detail, the researchers noted.

"The impressive scalability and efficiency of Expire-Span has exciting implications for, one day, achieving a wide-range of hard, humanlike AI capabilities that would otherwise not be possible," the researchers said.

PhonesSony To Release Three 2021 Flagship Sizes, Compact And Premium Make A Comeback by gabrielboone(op): 3:06pm On Aug 03, 2020
It seems like it's a bit too early for 2021 leaks but the kind of year we are having few things can surprise us. This one user in Android Police is one of those looking ahead and shared some interesting information regarding Sony's upcoming flagship series in 2021.

According to his sources, Sony plans to bring back the Compact and Premium variants of its flagship. This seems to be in line with the current trends as most of the companies are introducing at least three flagship models. He also adds that this year, the company will skip the small flagship form factor.

Normally a single comment on an internet board wouldn't be considered a particularly reliable source, but the info was backed up by Androidnext, which has decent track record with Xperia leaks. Plus it falls in line with the lineup shake-up that Sony promised as it seeks to regain some of the lost ground in the smartphone market.

WebmastersA Closer Look At The UEFI Scanner Coming To The Windows 10 Antivirus by gabrielboone(op): 2:54pm On Jun 27, 2020
Windows Defender, now called officially Microsoft Defender, is becoming more and more powerful, and now a growing number of users stick with the native security protection and no longer purchase and install third-party antivirus software.

The most recent antivirus tests are living proof in this regard, as the performance of Microsoft Defender has been in line with the one of the most powerful third-party security products out there.

So right now, it makes little sense for some users to install third-party security software given that Microsoft Defender is now capable of protecting devices at OS level.

And Microsoft just doesn’t stop here. Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (Microsoft ATP) is being updated with an UEFI scanner. In other words, Microsoft’s security application can now detect malware injected in firmware, thus adding a new security layer to devices running Windows 10.

Malware-infected firmware is the most difficult to detect, as it launches before booting the operating system when security software typically launches. So in most of the cases, such malware remains undetected.

Microsoft says the UEFI scanner is built with help from chipset manufacturers, who contributed with “insights,” allowing Microsoft Defender ATP to scan the firmware filesystem and determine if a risk of malware exists or not.

“Windows Defender System Guard helps defend against firmware attacks by providing guarantees for secure boot through hardware-backed security features like hypervisor-level attestation and Secure Launch, also known as Dynamic Root of Trust (DRTM), which are enabled by default in Secured-core PCs. The new UEFI scan engine in Microsoft Defender ATP expands on these protections by making firmware scanning broadly available,” Microsoft says.

The UEFI scanner comes with three important components, namely a detection engine that can help find exploits and malicious behaviors, a full filesystem scanner that closely inspects every piece of code inside a firmware, and an UEFI Anti-Rootkit that uses the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) to access the firmware.

When malware is detected at firmware level, the Microsoft Defender Security Center shows more information just like for a typical infected file. An alert for compromised firmware looks like this:

“The UEFI sensor in Microsoft Defender Antivirus detected malicious code in firmware.”

“To detect unknown threats in SPI flash, signals from the UEFI scanner are analyzed to identify anomalies and where they have been executed. Anomalies are reported to the Microsoft Defender Security Center for investigation,” Microsoft says.

Microsoft explains that the UEFI scanner is just a natural evolution of all security improvements in Microsoft Defender ATP, and the company says that more and more such updates are on their way.

“With its UEFI scanner, Microsoft Defender ATP gets even richer visibility into threats at the firmware level, where attackers have been increasingly focusing their efforts on. Security operations teams can use this new level of visibility, along with the rich set of detection and response capabilities in Microsoft Defender ATP, to investigate and contain such advanced attacks,” the company explains.

Microsoft Defender is offered as the default security application on all Windows 10 devices, and when installing the operating system, the antivirus engine is automatically enabled too.

Microsoft Defender can be further controlled from Windows Security, a security hub available in Windows 10 that provides access to all security features in the OS. Windows Security is also the home of other security controls, including parental tools and antivirus scanning options, while also allowing users to get more information on the current health status of their devices.

Like fully-featured antivirus products, Microsoft Defender also comes with real-time protection, cloud scanning, virus definition updates shipped on Windows Update, and multiple scanning modes.
WebmastersWindows 10 Build 20152: Everything You Need To Know by gabrielboone(op): 9:38pm On Jun 26, 2020
Microsoft has released a new Windows 10 preview build for users enrolled in the Windows Insider Program, and testers can download it right now from Windows Update.

More specifically, the new release is Windows 10 build 20152, and it’s available today for the Dev channel.

According to Microsoft’s recent Windows Insider program changes, the Dev channel is the new name of the Fast ring.

The first thing you need to know is that features that are released for users in the Dev channel come without an ETA. In other words, while Dev channel users can try out new features in Windows 10, they don’t have a release date, and Microsoft says it would only ship them when they are ready.

Right now, some of the improvements that are being tested in the Dev channel could go live in Windows 10 version 21H1, albeit as said, this is something that’s not certain. Windows 10 version 20H2 is being tested as part of the Beta channel, formerly known as the Slow ring.

Windows 10 build 20152 comes without any new features but includes four major fixes.

Microsoft has resolved a bug that broke down Notepad on devices where users launched a system reset. In other words, if you wanted to restore Windows 10 to scratch and turned to the system reset feature, there was a chance that Notepad was no longer available when you returned to the desktop.

While this issue has already been fixed in this new update, you can also reinstall Notepad from the Optional Features screen.

Microsoft says it has also included Windows Update improvements. In some cases, users running the previous Windows 10 builds as part of the Windows Insider program were no longer provided with a Windows Update icon in the system tray when an update was waiting for a reboot to complete the installation. Beginning with version 20152, everything should work as expected.

Then, Microsoft has also resolved a small bug that removed the “Continue” button in the dialog telling you that “Windows needs space to continue.”

And last but not least, there’s a new issue for the IME typing.

“We fixed an issue that could result in an IME typing as if it was ON, when it was actually in OFF state, and tapping the IME mode indicator in the taskbar wouldn’t change the mode,” Microsoft says.

There are 8 different known issues in this update, and you can check them out in full in the changelog after the jump. But one very important problem concerns some apps and games that run on the device and which could crash all of a sudden. This is the reason you’re not supposed to install Dev channel builds on production machines, as such bugs could substantially affect your device’s performance.

“Starting with the last build, some games and applications may crash at launch or fail to install. We’ve identified the root cause and are working on a fix for a future flight,” Microsoft says.

There are also other issues, including a BSOD that is encountered when connecting an Xbox controller to the computer.

Windows 10 build 20152 comes with a welcome set of improvements for users trying out Dev channel builds, but on the other hand, it also includes issues that need to be resolved as soon as possible. Keep in mind that the best way to try out Dev channel builds is on a testing computer or in a virtual machine, especially because of these errors that could break down OS features or affect the system performance.
