Christianity EtcRe: Secret £14million Bible In Which 'jesus Predicts Coming Of Prophet Muhammad by gameaddict(m): 8:05pm On Mar 25, 2013
http://www.aina.org/news/2012022916569.htm
(AINA) -- Much has been made of the recent discovery in Turkey of a Bible purported to be written in the Aramaic language, 1,500 years ago. The Muslim media, as well as Western media outlets, quickly pounced on this, claiming this Bible contains verses attributed to Jesus Christ, in which Christ predicts the coming of Muhammad. No media outlet has published a facsimile of these verses.

This "Bible" is written on leather in gold letters. The picture of the front cover show inscriptions in Aramaic and a drawing of a cross.

For any native speaker of Modern Assyrian (also known as neo-Aramaic), and that would be your average Assyrian today, the inscription is easily read. The bottom inscription, which is the most clearly visible from the published photos, says the following:

Transliteration: b-shimmit maran paish kteewa aha ktawa al idateh d-rabbaneh d-dera illaya b-ninweh b'sheeta d-alpa w-khamshamma d-maran

Translation: In the name of our Lord, this book is written on the hands of the monks of the high monastery in Nineveh, in the 1,500th year of our Lord.

Nineveh is the ancient Assyrian capital and is located in present-day north Iraq, near Mosul.

There are spelling errors that are immediately noticeable.

The first word, b'shimmit maran ("in the name of our Lord"wink, is erroneously spelled with a 't' instead of a 'd'. The 'd' in Assyrian is the genitive, and it prefixes the word that follows. It should read b-shimma d-maran, not b-shimmit maran (note, the last word of the sentence is correctly spelled d-maran ("of our Lord"wink).

The first word also contains another spelling error. The correct spelling for "name" in Assyrian is ashma, with the initial 'a' being silent. Therefore, when correctly spelled, 'in the name of our Lord" should be written as b-ashma d-maran.

The word idateh is misspelled, it should end with an 'a', idata. Also the phrase al idateh ("on the hands"wink is incorrect, it should read b-idata ("by the hands"wink.

The bottom sentence uses the word ktawa ("book"wink to refer to the book, but in Assyrian the Bible is never referred to as a "book." One says awreta (Old Testament), khdatta (New Testament), or ktawa qaddeesha (holy book). Given this, since no one has seen the inside of this "Bible," we cannot be sure if it is in fact a Bible.

Most significantly, this writing is in Modern Assyrian, which was standardized in the 1840s. The first bible in Modern Assyrian was produced in 1848. If this book were written in 1500 A.D. it should have been written in Classical Assyrian.

It is highly unlikely for monks to make such elementary mistakes. It remains to be seen whether this book is a forgery, or even what kind of book it is.

The bottom inscription also says the book was written in 1500 A.D.. If the book does contain verses predicting the coming of Muhammad, it is no great accomplishment to predict something 870 years after the fact, since Muhammad founded Islam in 630 A.D..

Most media outlets, as well as Muslim and Christian outlets, lead the story with headlines pronouncing "1500 year old Bible predicts the coming of Muhammad" -- without any evidence to support this.

For Muslims, the implications of the headlines are desirable, that Jesus Christ is a Prophet, just like Muhammad, and not the Son of God. According to Al Bawaba, the Turkish culture and tourism minister, Ertugrul Gunay, said "In line with Islamic belief, the Gospel [this Bible] treats Jesus as a human being and not a God. It rejects the ideas of the Holy Trinity and the Crucifixion and reveals that Jesus predicted the coming of the Prophet Mohammed."

Commenting on the errors in the book, Al Bawaba says in another article:

For example, the book says that there are nine heavens and that the tenth is paradise while in Quran they are seven only and claims that Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus without any pain while the Quran story says she got labor pains.

According to the gospel, Jesus said to Jewish priests that he is not the Messiah and that the Messiah is Mohammed. This means a denial of the existence of a Messiah, who is in fact Jesus Christ, and makes Jesus and Mohammed seem like they are one and the same person.

The book also contains information that lack historical credibility like the presence of three armies, each made up of 200,000 soldiers, in Palestine whereas the entire population of Palestine 2,000 years ago did not even reach 200,000. In addition, Palestine was occupied by the Romans at the time and it is impossible that Palestine was allowed to have any army or armies of its own.

The last sentence in chapter 217 says that 100 pounds of stones were placed on Christ's body. This confirms that the gospel was written quite recently because the first to use the pound as a unit of weight was the Ottomans in their experiments with Italy and Spain and it was never known during the time of Jesus.

Chapter 20 also stated that the cities of Jerusalem and Nazareth are sea ports.

This same article ends with "According to many studies, the gospel attributed to St. Barnabas was written by a European Jew in the Middle Ages who was quite familiar with the Quran and the Gospels. He, thus, mixed facts from here and there and his intentions remain unknown."

But despite the availability of information on this "Bible," most media outlets, Muslims, liberal and secular organizations have portrayed this discovery as something that undermines Christianity, ignoring the many problems with this book and presenting it as virtual fact. In fact, in their zeal to support the anti-Christian narrative, they have withheld or suppressed information questioning the authenticity of this book. For these organizations and individuals, this is another tool in their arsenal for the attack on the foundations of Christian doctrine.

Hello, does anyone know what's wrong with utiware(web hosting company)? I paid for a site last night via interswitch because the ad on utiware's site claimed my site would be instantly activated that way. Several hours later, its yet to be activated and I'm beginning to wonder if utiware really exists. Their chat isn't online and I've submitted a support ticket but all I've gotten are the automated confirmations for payment and the support ticket. I even called their number but it wasn't answered. What next?

I did not call any brand a dying brand. I only listed two reasons why commercial brands may want to change identities. Please don't attribute anything I did not say to me.
Secondly, even if a man who is seen as a hero is not recognized elsewhere, he must still be honored in his country. However, there are many ways to honor people. Destroying a brand that is doing well just to honor another is not the way to go in my opinion.
EducationRe: Police Sprays Tear Gas In UNILAG/MAU: Gunshots Too by gameaddict(m): 3:42pm On Jun 01, 2012
@Nilade: Lets say its just a brand. Fact is, it has achieved its status by being UNILAG and that is worth considering. The same status that makes it attractive as an honor to Abiola. Secondly, the commercial brands mostly change due to crisis or some much needed business restructuring. We need none of that.

In more developed countries, academic institutions rarely change names and if they do, they are widely supported by those whose lives have to do with that institution. Jonathan could have averted all this by dialoging with and sensitizing the stakeholders to the change.

The name change is an arbitrary change and worse is that the clueless supporters still say "it is not enough", "more should be done", etc. This just shows how much we don't need this nonsense.
EducationRe: Police Sprays Tear Gas In UNILAG/MAU: Gunshots Too by gameaddict(m): 3:01pm On Jun 01, 2012
@lawak: I was not only warning of possible violence but also of present violence that has erupted elsewhere in the nation because the Nigerian government can be deaf, forceful and as we we all know, blinded. Why not listen to the students and dialogue immediately? Why wait? I for one will fight back if any soldier or police dares harm me. The government should be present in a civil manner, instead, it is resorting to force and scoffing the democracy it claims to honor. What a sham. Its all a big lie.

PS: Comparing an institution, an academic one at that, with the commercial brands you have mentioned just goes to show how blinded and misconstrued many people are.

lawak: The University is meant to be a place of character formation but these days, we have touts and clowns parade themselves as University students; else, what will get a serious and focus minded person into blocking 3rd mainland bridge not to talk of staying back on the campus after being ordered to vacate. It is like staying beyond a curfew period for a "justifiable" reason - There can never be a good reason for doing the wrong thing. If changing the name has any negative effect, IT IS OBVIOUSLY not for the current "students" to fight. The Alumni association, the governing council, the senate,NANS, ASSU,etc should have been the ones engaging the government while the "students" face their studies, watch the drama and learn as it plays out. In summary, those peope in the hostels are NOT students. A well worded petition and intellectual engagement would have painted a better image for them and possibly achieve a better result than what they are currently doing.
We have petitioned and we are peacefully protesting. Do your research. It's easy calling people touts when you're not in their shoes. I for one chose UNILAG partly because of its name and prestige. UNILAG is my harvard, my oxford, my cambridge put together. Okay, I don't particularly like everything or everyone there but its the UNIVERSITY I AM PROUD OF. I could have chosen any other school, public and private. Yet I chose UNILAG. How can one man just decide to change it without consultation with stakeholders and due process. It is a scoff at democracy.

Jonathan should not destroy the identity by which UNILAG has become what it is. The same identity that makes it attractive as an honor to Abiola. Are people so blind and ignorant?

Una no reach Ojota crowd for january.....Na wetin Ur parents send u go do 4 sch be dat abi?
Is that the point? The issue is the government should respond positively to this issue instead of acting like dictators. If issues get out of hand, they'll start allocating unnecessary security budgets that will end up in their pockets. And whether we are legion or one, it does not matter. If civil disobedience fails and violence creeps in, what will be will be, Neither scared of torture nor death. I will stand for what I think is right.

@leomax: "An unjust law is no law". Why ask them to vacate the skool? To create disunity amongst the protesters. We shall display civil disobedience till Jonathan stops being a liar claiming to love democracy yet scoffing it.

Now that we are peaceful, nobody is listening. If we become violent, the failed leaders will start asking for dialogue. When will Africa wake up and do things right?
PoliticsRe: Why UNILAG Must Remain UNILAG by gameaddict(op): 1:43pm On Jun 01, 2012
@noblezone: The Title was deliberately chosen to get people to read, especially the nairaland tribalists. Secondly, The renaming Nigeria suggestion was an attempt to help @dilifred understand why renaming institutions arbitrarily and needlessly is bad. Lastly, Na you know who give you "Abiola republic" suggestion.

PS: My "supposed theory" also stands as a reason. Perhaps not for the title but as a reason why President Jonathan must think seriously of his action. He is trying to use the achievements, reach and status of UNILAG to honor Abiola and doing it in a way that harms the very identity by which the institution has contributed to the nation.

@jenams: such naivety. He was elected to make decisions on the people's behalf. This decision is not on our behalf. It does not even bring honor to M.K.O Abiola. How about standing for democracy as Abiola did rather than sending policemen and soldiers to disrupt our protests? All he is doing amounts to mocking Abiola and democracy.

SportsWhy Are Madrid Players Already Claiming Ronaldo Is The Best by gameaddict(op): 1:33pm On Apr 22, 2012
Seems to me like something's up with the world best player title in the madrid camp. I've noticed a lot of madrid players claiming cr7 is the best in the world in recent interviews. I know other teams do it too but usually, they make such comments after the title has been given or just about to be given. So why are madrid players being quick with their mouth? I suspect its an internal campaign. Is it?
GamingRe: Ghost Recon Future Soldier: Not Buying by gameaddict(op): 8:34pm On Apr 04, 2012
Yeah, I guess I'm overreacting. Will be watching the gameplay videos when the game is released to see what the plot turns out to be.

Nevertheless, I think writers and most stakeholders in creative fields as well as the general media nowadays are after quick returns and tend to use controversial issues in society as means towards achieving their aims - without regard for the effect they might be having. Heck! we hardly have news channels anymore. Everyone's engaged in entertainment, contents lack depth, give wrong representation and there's a growing amount of selective disinformation going on.

PS: 'Shooting polygons' can have far reaching effects- more than you can imagine... Beyond the price of fish and more. It could start riots and wars. It could end the world. Its not really about the polygons being polygons, its about what you do with them.

No, I'm not from the niger delta region if anyone is wondering.

Also, I did disclose playing other games and how they had little or no effect but how does one judge without circumstance?

My post was largely centered around resulting perception of the region and Nigeria at large and I don't see why some people have to turn everything on nairaland into regional or ethnic arguments. If you have nothing to contribute, please ignore the post.

Now, if I made a game about 9/11, How do you think the US will receive it? Their first question will probably be about representation.

That is what I'm also asking for. If this game eventually presents us in a bad manner, Should I not complain?
GamingGhost Recon Future Soldier: Not Buying by gameaddict(op): 3:31pm On Apr 01, 2012
Hey guys, just saw the new ghost recon: future soldier gameplay video and I felt bad after watching it. Anyone seen it? Nigeria, Niger delta scene, awful....

I'm thinking whoever wrote it was senseless and stupid and I'm really starting to review the kind of games I play... I mean, shooting random, fictional characters in games is one thing but what we have here is a well defined society and environment, close to home, events fresh in memory and the whole thing just depicts us as the evil kidnapping group.

Many people have been trying to capitalize on the niger delta events in stories and even here on nairaland, we had suggestions for games based on it but they were refused due to reasons such as possibility of wrong representation. I think its a senseless, weak, uninspiring and naive thing to do but I can understand how the ghost recon producers might have overlooked things. I for one did finish modern warfare 2, no thought for society or setting or how it represented the people. It may therefore not be as bad as I think regarding how players will view Nigeria but who knows? Human psychology is a tricky thing.

What do you guys think?
