I'm hoping this attempt gets better results than the other ones, but I'm yet to see any animation or 3d model yet. This is very crucial and might very well define the outcome of your project. Anyways, here's my gift to you guys: Animating the "Run"-Cycle of a Snake Warrior link: http://www.moddb.com/games/runic-rampage/tutorials/animating-the-run-cycle-of-a-snake-warrior note: not my site, article or model. But I think it'll help you guys. If you need more, give me info on what you need and I'll try to find it.

@dpuzo: Alright. Anytime. |
@ToyinDipo: Depends on platform. I Just searched around for it on android and it seems people have coded apps that do just that. |
Posting an entire database of phone numbers, sorted by states and category of emergency will not help anyone and will require unnecessary effort on the part of the user in terms of sorting and storing them. The app simplifies everything for them and users can easily click the numbers to call from within the app. Accessibility. Ease of use. These are what I aimed for while creating the app and I believe I achieved my aim in this regard. But then, I can not deny the fact that the post was an ad especially since its an entry for a competition and I do understand the immense effort that would be required if you had to notify all users. In that case, I believe you would not refuse an app that automates notification to posters for you just as users would appreciate an app that gives them easy access to emergency services. The fact that I can see it on my list of posts doesn't mean I get to know. Especially if my browsing process involves moving through the section rather than via my profile post listings. After all, I am also interested in other topics on this forum and this section besides mine. |
@dpuzo: I'll keep improving on the game even after the competition. Its been the the plan from day 1. |
I don't see how an app that helps people in terms of access to emergency services belongs in the science and tech section rather than in a section where people interested in health and safety come together. And you could at least send some form of notification to posters when their topics are moved. |
@dpuzo: someone has requested that feature so I'm definitely interested in adding it. But mtn haven't replied my enquiry as to the possibility of improving our apps during the competition. My contact details are in the reply above your comment. Thanks. |
Hello, I posted a topic in this section earlier today about my emergency app. Someone decided to move it to the science and technology super section. Why? No reason was even posted. Topic link is https://www.nairaland.com/1493522/free-nigerian-emergency-app |

@dpuzo: You can find the code for your app in the nexva approval mail or in the edit content control panel. The nexva mail also comes with an embeddable html code which you can use to share your content. |
@DharkPoet: click select files to select your apk, then click upload file to start the upload process. You should see a progress bar. Wait till it shows completed. Sometimes, after upload, the next page may show you a small thumbs down icon (indicating file not found). I just delete it and redo the process again. If you're still having problems, contact mtndeveloperchallenge@nexva.com or support@cchubnigeria.com. |
3D is a bit easy if you use tools like unity3d and have a good artist/animator. But you have to learn new concepts and be prepared to face new challenges especially with respect to cameras (angles, camera collision with environment [or better, smart cameras that adjust to the environment], etc) and interaction. And unless you're fully prepared, avoid undertaking huge projects where you have to start learning every process because there's no one else to it. Anyways, check out my 2d game, super akpos. Its an entry for the MTN app developer competition. Description: Akpos goes for some coins, avoiding missiles and missile-riding-monkeys in this exciting Nigerian game. What's more? It comes in four languages; English, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. Link: http://www.nexva.mobi/31287

@kennyinusa: Thanks. I'll try focusing on two platforms and see what happens. The competition is for free apps so I won't worry about the 60:40 percentage for now. Thanks again. |
alright, thanks a lot. |
Alright thanks, but this complicates the idea a bit. Will blackberry app developers have their apps competing against other blackberry developers or will they compete against android developers such that the most downloaded apps regardless of platform win their categories. If the latter is the case, are we expected to create cross platform apps? Since the most logical choice will then be to create apps for the platform with the most users, this will be is a bit unfair especially noting that the people on the losing platform will still have their apps locked to the nexva platform for 12 months. |
Hello guys, I'm sort of confused, is android the only supported platform for the competition? Some people are stating that the competition may be for any mobile platform. @DharkPoet: You can submit multiple apps to different categories but I'm not sure a 'student category' exists. I'm thinking it means your app can be tagged as a 'student submission' but it must be submitted in one of the main categories. Please confirm by mailing them: mtnappschallenge@nextapps.com |
Hello, Initial reports and old posts seem to point to the fact that the MTN app competition is for android phones. The FAQ page (located here: http://nextapps.mtnonline.com/index/page/id/27 ) of the store even states that its for android phones (os 2.2 upwards) only. However, I've recently come across some articles stating that the competition is open to virtually any OS except iOS. Any clarification or changes? |
@big_head: I guess the team dev initiative is dead since many of us lacked the skill, motivation or time to drive interest and create/execute ideas as a team at the time. But some of us still model and code when we are free.
|
@meshybizzo: You're right. We did try here: https://www.nairaland.com/471237/game-development-join-team/20 Interest waned as time passed without significant updates/progress which was due to the fact that most of us were noobs at the time. To make matters worse, my hard drive went toast and I had to start all over (slow internet = not a lot of online backups). Plus a game isn't just about placing and animating 3d models on the screen and shooting/performing other actions unless you are considering the more popular endless progression form of most of today's mobile apps. Anyways, for those of us who put in the effort, I believe the experience was worth it. For me, it was. I've been experimenting with gameplay and stuff lately, focusing more on 2d, endless progressions and mobile however. And school doesn't give me time to do a lot especially since my interests no longer lie in the game development aspect of programming alone.

@private.tisa: yes it's allowed. check the terms and conditions page. |
Not to be a killjoy but he's definitely using a script or service, seems like grou.ps. As far as marketing goes however, this is smart. People are signing up. I guess being young is the main selling point nowadays.

The truth is country specific domain names are artificially expensive and in a world where the internet is at the forefront of globalization, the benefit of domain localization at such an expense is minimal especially for small businesses. Also, .com.ng and .ng domains do not amount to patriotism, let us stop this devious claim. Are google and microsoft any different than they were before they acquired those domains? Did they even acquire it to look patriotic? Nope, purely business and legal reasons. If they are serious about enabling Nigerian businesses through localized domains, they should lower the costs. Devious means such as enforcing registrations and accusations of non patriotism will only reduce the attractiveness of the domains. |
Hello nairalanders, I've just discovered that a competing site has carried out what amounts to impersonation on my site to advertise their product. What are my options? Right now, I'm taking steps to: Prevent users from using 'admin' in their names Creating a tool to alert admin on replies(especially those that include links) so that they can be effectively moderated. write out info on the submission page to prevent users from falling for such scams. Additional info: I uploaded the site sometime last year and its growing in usage but I haven't been actively administrating it because I've been busy with other projects. My partner recently suggested a feature and in the course of adding it, I discovered the act. I have avoided revealing the two sites in question to circumvent any claim that I'm fraudulently advertising my site here. But if you need proof, I can upload images |
