Many people invest heavily in gate automation only to have the system fail during the rainy season or after a few months of use. As someone who handles these installations daily, I’ve noticed 5 common mistakes that cost owners thousands of Naira in repairs:

Underpowered Motors: Using a 400kg motor for a heavy 800kg iron gate. It will work at first, but the motor will burn out within months. Always check the gate weight vs. the motor's Newton-meters (Nm).

Poor Rack Alignment: If the gear rack isn't perfectly leveled with the motor pinion, it creates friction. This is why some gates "jerk" or get stuck halfway.

The "Stabilizer" Oversight: Our power grid in Nigeria is unstable. Without a proper dedicated surge protector or stabilizer, a single spike can fry the control board (the "brain" of your gate.

Ignoring the Rollers: If your gate wheels are rusty or worn out, the motor has to work 3x harder. A smooth manual gate makes for a long-lasting automatic gate.

Poor Drainage around the Motor: If the motor base is too low, water will settle around it during heavy Lagos rain, eventually seeping into the gearbox.

Pro-Tip: Always insist on a backup battery system so you don't get locked out during a "NEPA" power cut!
