Two days back, President Muhammadu Buhari announced the suspension of the Nigerian Chief Justice , Walter Onnoghen following the recommendation of the Code of Conduct Tribunal over undeclared foreign banks account with questionable amounts of monies in it.

As expected, his suspension sparked outraged with some saying the decision was political even though some persons agreed that his suspension was on point.

The international communities such as the United Kingdom, United States of America and the European Union, are said to have condemned the ‘hasty’ decision saying it was questionable since election was few days away.

Reacting to the report, the federal government warned against foreign interference in the nation’s affairs, particularly the forthcoming general elections.

Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, gave the warning in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

Shehu stated that the federal government condemned “any interference or perception management that promotes apprehension, citizens distrust or undermines the transparency and acceptability of the outcomes of our electoral process.

“Nigeria reserves the right to be insulated from suggestions and or interference with respect to wholly internal affairs and commends international laws,customs and norms that mandate and require nations and the comity to respect this prerogative to all.

“Nigeria is confident of its electoral processes and her preparation for the imminent elections and the federal government has supported the independent electoral umpire in both its independence and resources needed to accomplish our desire and insistence on free and fair elections’’.

According to him, the federal government welcomes the prevailing keen interest and partnerships for successful elections and a peaceful Nigeria.

He added that the government had ensured the independence of all organs, institutions and arms of government to “perform their functions in a manner that is transparent, and not lacking in integrity whether institutionally or by persons within such institutions or organs.’’

He pledged that the government would continue to do this.

“Although the question of foreign interference, whether state sponsored ,promoted or otherwise has dominated recent elections and outcomes globally, the federal government assures citizens and the global community that it will fiercely and assiduously promote the will and the right of Nigerians to choose and elect their leaders without pressure or assistance from persons or entities that are not constitutionally empowered to participate in the process.

“Citizens are encouraged to confidently exercise their franchise in an orderly manner with the assurance of the federal government to their security during and after the electoral process as well as the readiness of the security forces to confront any plan or attempt to interfere with or disrupt the process whether by elements within or from our country.

US singer Chris Brown has been arrested in Paris on suspicion of rape, French police say.


A 24-year-old woman alleges that the star assaulted her in a hotel suite in the city earlier this month.
She reportedly told police that the pair met at a nightclub in central Paris, close to the Champs-Elysées, before they returned to the hotel.

The singer, 29, is yet to comment on the allegation. French police are investigating the woman’s complaint.

Two other men, identified by French media as Brown’s bodyguard and a friend, have also been arrested. .

Investigators have another two days to decide whether to let him go or file preliminary charges.

Brown was detained on Monday on potential charges of aggravated rape and drug infractions and remained in custody on Tuesday, a judicial official said.

Two days after former President Olusegun Obasanjo released a statement condemning the Buhari administration, both men have met at the Council of State meeting taking place in Abuja.
It is the first time they would be meeting since the former president began to publicly criticise the Buhari administration.

In a statement on Sunday, entitled ‘Points for Concern and Action’, Obasanjo slammed President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged intimidation of those perceived to be critics of his government.

He said the President lacks that capacity to offer Nigeria what it deserves at this point in time.

The elder statesman also accused President Buhari of returning the country to the era of late General Sani Abacha and asked Nigerians to elect only leaders that can put Nigeria on the path of progress.

In a swift reaction, the presidency said that it would teach Obasanjo and PDP a political lesson in the forthcoming presidential elections.

Today, however, both men were seen shaking hands as the National Council of State meeting kicked off in Abuja.

Others in attendance are the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, former President, Goodluck Jonathan, and some Governors.

Former Heads of State, Ernest Shonekan, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Former Chief Justices of Nigeria as well as the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, are also present.

An irate mob in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Monday, lynched one Babatunde Ajonileju, whom they accused of harvesting human faeces for sinister motives.

An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, said at the Igirigiri area of the state capital, where the man was lynched, that the mob had captured him in the Matthew area of the town and taken him to some parts of the town before they eventually brought him there.

Other eyewitnesses claimed that the man, who was suspected to be a ritualist, was apprehended and subsequently killed for allegedly consuming the faeces.

They claimed that the man was sighted by an unidentified elderly woman, who raised the alarm that prompted youths in the area to apprehend him.

According to the eywitnesses, when the man was caught, he claimed that he was harvesting the faeces for some church leaders.

“That was why they took him to Okeyinmi, Matthew Street, Ijigbo and other areas of the town for confirmation before taking him to Odo Ado, where he was lynched. Nothing could be confirmed. The leader of the white garment church in Odo Ado is not in town. The man attempted to escape, but the pursuing mob caught up with him at the Red Roof junction,” an eyewitness explained.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Ekiti State Command, Mr Caleb Ikechukwu, said, “From our investigation, the person’s name is Babatunde Ajoniloju. He was 29 years old. He was actually lynched to death by unknown mob at the Odua Odun area of Ado Ekiti.

“It was alleged that he gathered human faeces for ritual purposes. What the people did was to lynch him to death.

“That was jungle justice. It is not acceptable anywhere. What the people were supposed to do was to hand him over to the police for proper investigation. It is only then we would be able to establish if what they said he did was actually true. We have yet to make any arrest.”

Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Monday called on Nigerians to resist the return of looters to power by voting for honest and selfless leaders in the forthcoming elections.

Osinbajo, who described Buhari as an honest and selfless Nigerian who could be trusted with the nation’s resources to better the country’s lot, said it was a necessity for Nigerians to resist the Peoples Democratic Party, which it said was full of people desperate to loot the country and plunge the country into another crisis.

The vice president spoke in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, during at a roundtable and mentorship programme on micro, small and medium scale enterprises.

Osinbajo, who led the Tradermoni programme in the Ado Ekiti metropolis, Ikere and Omuo Ekiti, was also at Iworoko Ekiti to condole with the community over the truck accident that claimed the lives of no fewer than 15 persons.

He said, “Rather than stealing money, President Buhari is doing more in strengthening youths through N-Power, Tradermoni, Marketmoni, School Feeding Programme, Lagos-Kano rail line, Calabar-Asaba-Abuja railway line, among others. All these are meant to benefit Nigerian masses.

“Many of our leaders are not responsible; so, Nigeria needs an honest man to lead the people and President Buhari is doing just that. Don’t allow anybody to deceive you. President Buhari is an honest man.”

Osinbajo hinted that Buhari’s government would establish two special micro finance banks, People’s Money Bank and Entrepreneurial Bank to drive the Tradermoni and Market Money programmes, where beneficiaries would get between N100,000 and N500,000 to establish MSME to drive the economy.

He said, “As we speak, 500,000 Nigerians are benefiting from N-Power, but we are not going to stop at that; soon, the number will increase.

“The next level of our government is to give loans to women, youths and other sector through the special banks that are underway to make lives easy for the masses.”

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, said, “If you want better values for your lives, if you need a government that will be compassionate and resourceful, then vote for Buhari/Osinbajo in the next election.

“The good livelihood of Ekiti people is dear to Buhari’s government and with the APC in the saddle, Ekiti will continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy,” Fayemi said

Nigeria can explore $5bn line of credit with low interest rate from India, the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhay Thakur, has said.

Thakur made the disclosure when he visited the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, according to a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Monday.

He said that the Prime Minister of India made available to Africa $10bn credit line during India – Africa Forum Summit out of which only fifty per cent had been utilised.

The Indian envoy added that Nigeria had the opportunity to explore the credit line which had an interest rate of only 1.75 per cent.

“This is a good facility which to my knowledge half of it has just been utilised and for Nigeria, we can enhance our areas of collaboration,” the envoy said.

Thakur said India was making moves to upgrade the bilateral agreement existing between both countries in the areas of human capacity development, e-government, industrialisation and Information and Communications Technology.

Responding, Shittu said India was one of the best countries Nigeria had enjoyed a relationship with in terms of partnership.

Shittu said, “In the area of bilateral agreement, we can raise a team to work on crucial areas and look at the details and appraise what we can do on low hanging fruit that would be beneficial to both countries.

“A lot of Indian companies had often indicated interest to invest in Nigeria by way of establishing industries but rarely translate such into action, hence, the need to encourage them to translate such interest into reality.”

The minister called on the envoy to encourage India investors to establish a 5G village in Nigeria and also partner with stakeholders in building the proposed ICT Park in Abuja which is expected to be located in a free trade zone that would add beauty and elegance to the country as well as boost revenue base of the investors.
