I went through the same because i grew up in yoruba land and mingled a lot with the people there. My igbo is not fluent but I chose to learn the language in my own way.

Those humiliating you are misguided. If at all they must humiliate, your parents that didn't teach you the Igbo language are the ones to be humiliated.

I lost my dad when I was little.. my mom do speak igbo to me but that wasn't enough to be fluent in it since it was just her..

Anyone living outside their home state deals with this. Just ignore them. You’ll pick up the basics after a few months anyway. Don’t let them make you feel bad about where you come from—just remind yourself that they’re the ones being ignorant, not you.

I’m 25, Igbo from Anambra, raised in Cameroon and now I’m being humiliated for not speaking Igbo. What should I do?

I’m 25 years old. I'm Igbo, from Anambra State, specifically Ufuma.
But I was born and raised in Cameroon.

Growing up there, my environment shaped me. We spoke mostly English, French, and Pidgin. Igbo wasn’t part of daily life not because my parents rejected it, but because survival, school, and environment took priority. Language wasn’t a choice; it was circumstance.

Recently, I returned home to Nigeria to reconnect with my roots and family. Instead of understanding, I’ve been met with insults, mockery, and humiliation from relatives and even family friends simply because I can’t speak Igbo fluently.

I’m told things like:

“You’re not a real Igbo person”
“How can you be from Anambra and not speak Igbo?”
“You should be ashamed”
“My mama tell me say i be Igbo"
What hurts the most is that this comes from people who are supposed to be family. I didn’t choose where I was raised. I didn’t reject my culture I just wasn’t immersed in the language.

This situation has been emotionally draining and depressing. I already feel like I don’t fully belong anywhere too foreign for home, but not fully foreign either. I want to learn Igbo. I want to reconnect. But constant ridicule makes it hard to even try.
