PoliticsWhy A One Party System Won’t Work In Nigeria Prof. Gambari Explains by George38(op): 9:12am On Jan 23
North Central Holds the Key to 2027 as Nigeria Honours Ambassador Ibrahim Gambari’s Four Decades of Global Service

19 January 2026

As political alignments intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election, renewed attention is being drawn to the strategic importance of the North Central zone widely regarded as Nigeria’s electoral swing region.

Against this backdrop, leading political voices are revisiting the enduring insights of one of the nation’s most accomplished statesmen and diplomats, Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, CFR, whose life’s work continues to shape national and global discourse on power, governance and diplomacy.

Professor Gambari, Nigeria’s foremost scholar diplomat and a seasoned eyewitness to power, stands as a towering figure in international relations, public service and intellectual leadership. With more than four decades of distinguished service to Nigeria, Africa and the global community, his career reflects rare depth, consistency and impact across academia, diplomacy, peacebuilding and governance.

A Scholar Formed for Global Leadership
Professor Gambari’s academic foundation was laid at the London School of Economics, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1968. He proceeded to Columbia University, New York, obtaining a Master’s degree in 1970 and a PhD in Political Science and International Relations in 1974. These formative years shaped his analytical rigor and lifelong engagement with global governance.

His academic career spanned leading institutions across continents. He taught at universities in the United States, including the City University of New York and the State University of New York, before returning to Nigeria to lecture at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he rose to the rank of Professor.

He later served as Visiting Professor at globally respected institutions such as Johns Hopkins University (SAIS), Georgetown University, and Howard University, influencing generations of scholars and policymakers.

From Academia to National Service
Professor Gambari’s transition into public service was marked by swift recognition of his expertise. In 1983, he was appointed Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), where he repositioned the institute as a leading centre for foreign policy research and strategic thought.

In 1984, he was appointed Minister of External Affairs of Nigeria, serving under the administration of General Muhammadu Buhari.

Though brief, his tenure was notable for strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic posture and articulating a principled foreign policy rooted in national and regional interests.

A Decade at the United Nations: Nigeria’s Global Voice
Professor Gambari’s most defining international role came with his appointment as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1990–1999) a record setting tenure that spanned multiple administrations and a transformative period in global politics.

At the UN, he chaired the Special Committee Against Apartheid (1990–1994), playing a pivotal role in the global diplomatic campaign that helped dismantle apartheid in Southern Africa. He also served as Chair of the UN Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (1990–1999), contributing significantly to reforms in international peacekeeping during a time of complex post Cold War conflicts.

Senior UN Leadership and Peace Missions
In 1999, Professor Gambari made history as the first Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa to the UN Secretary General. In this role, he was central to advancing the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and strengthening collaboration between African leaders and the international community.

He later served as Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs (2005–2007), overseeing global political analysis and conflict prevention. His diplomatic assignments included sensitive missions to Cyprus, Zimbabwe and Myanmar, where he led high-level negotiations under the UN’s Good Offices mandate.

From 2010 to 2012, he served as Joint AU/UN Special Representative and Head of the UN-AU Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) then the world’s largest peacekeeping operation demonstrating his capacity to manage complex conflicts in fragile environments.
Service at Home: Governance and Institution-Building
Back home, Professor Gambari continued to serve Nigeria at the highest level. Between 2020 and 2023, he was Chief of Staff to the President of Nigeria, providing strategic counsel and leveraging his international networks to support national interests.

His commitment to education and human capital development is reflected in his leadership roles across Nigerian universities, including as first Chancellor of Kwara State University and Pro Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, among others.

Savannah Centre: A Think Tank with Impact
One of his most enduring legacies is the founding of the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development (SCDDD) in Abuja. The Centre has emerged as a leading policy think tank, fostering dialogue, research and capacity building in democratic governance, conflict prevention and sustainable development across Africa.

Through the Savannah Centre, Professor Gambari has continued to shape policy debates, mentor leaders and promote peaceful democratic culture on the continent.
Scholar, Author and Global Honours

A respected intellectual, Professor Gambari has authored influential works, including Theory and Reality in Foreign Policy Making: Nigeria after the Second Republic. His ideas—particularly the concept of concentric circle diplomacy remain central to the study of Nigeria’s foreign policy.

His contributions have earned him numerous honours, including Nigeria’s Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) and South Africa’s Order of the Companion of OR Tambo. He is also a member of the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars and holds multiple honorary doctorates.

An Enduring Legacy
Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari’s life and career represent the finest traditions of scholarship, diplomacy and public service. His influence is evident in the institutions he has built, the policies he has shaped, and the countless leaders he has mentored.

As Nigeria navigates critical political and democratic choices ahead of 2027, his insightsparticularly on power, consensus and the strategic role of the North Central reremain as relevant as ever, underscoring a legacy that continues to inform the nation’s path forward.

Politics2027 Consultations Gather Pace As Paschal Mbawuike Visits PANDEF Chairman, Ambas by George38(op): 10:27am On Jan 17
Political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections are gaining momentum, with key stakeholders in the Niger Delta intensifying engagements focused on leadership, unity, and the region’s strategic interests within Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

Earlier in the week, Paschal Mbawuike paid a courtesy visit to Ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, OON, a highly respected statesman, diplomat, and one of Nigeria’s most accomplished public administrators.

Ambassador Igali has served the country with distinction, including as Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government during the administration of former Governor Goodluck Jonathan, Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministries of Water Resources and Power, and Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Sweden.

Renowned for his integrity and depth of experience, Ambassador Igali is widely regarded as a close adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan and a mentor to several leaders within Nigeria’s political and policy environment.

Now serving as National Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Ambassador Igali recently convened a high level stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday, 13 January 2026. The meeting brought together influential voices committed to the stability, development, and sustained political relevance of the Niger Delta, forming part of broader strategic consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.

The visit also provided an opportunity for Mbawuike to reconnect with His Majesty, King Alfred Papapreye Diete Spiff, OFR, FICMC, Chairman of the Bayelsa State Council of Traditional Rulers. The interaction underscored the enduring role of traditional institutions in supporting political leadership and promoting peace, unity, and development in the region.

Observers note that the series of engagements reflects the increasing importance of mentorship, collaboration, and inclusive dialogue as Nigeria approaches another critical electoral cycle. The renewed interactions among political actors, elder statesmen, and traditional rulers signal a deliberate effort to harmonise experience with vision in shaping the future of Bayelsa State, the Niger Delta, and the nation at large.

Nairaland General[PHOTOS] Al Makura, Paschal Mbawike Spotlight North Central’s Rising Influence A by George38(op): 4:02pm On Jan 16
As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum, Nigeria’s North Central region is rapidly emerging as a decisive force in the nation’s evolving political landscape.

Political analysts now increasingly describe the region as Nigeria’s version of key swing states in the United States such as Florida, Michigan, and Pennsylvania arguing that no serious presidential contender can realistically secure victory without strong support from the zone. Broad based acceptance in the North Central is now viewed as critical to any credible presidential pathway.

This growing strategic importance aligns with the long standing assessment of Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, Nigeria’s foremost diplomat and seasoned power broker, whose decades of experience have provided deep insight into the mechanics of power and governance across successive administrations.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, widely regarded as a master political strategist, is believed to have identified this shift early. Political watchers note that his engagements and alliances increasingly reflect a deliberate effort to consolidate influence within the North Central as part of wider calculations ahead of 2027.

At the centre of this regional political conversation His Excellency, former Governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji Umaru Tanko Al Makura, a seasoned politician and one of the most influential figures from the zone. Beyond his political credentials, Al Makura is a prominent multi million dollar real estate developer with business interests spanning Abuja and Washington, and is widely recognised as the head of the Al Makura political and business dynasty in Nasarawa State.

Recent political interactions involving Al Makura and Mr Paschal Mbawike have further highlighted the enduring political networks and personal relationships that continue to shape influence in the North Central. Particular acknowledgement has been given to His Majesty, Al Makura Senior, a long time associate of the late General Jeremiah Useni, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a respected national statesman.

The first anniversary of General Useni’s passing is scheduled to take place in Abuja on January 23, 2026, offering another moment of reflection on the enduring alliances, shared history, and leadership traditions that continue to define Nigeria’s political evolution.

Historically, the North Central has played a pivotal role in national governance, having produced three Chiefs of Staff and three national chairmen of major political parties an indication of the region’s deep institutional relevance and growing political weight.

While speculation continues over whether the presidency could eventually emerge from the North Central by 2031, analysts caution that such an outcome remains uncertain and will depend on political strategy, national consensus, and the passage of time.

What is increasingly clear, however, is that as 2027 approaches, the North Central has firmly positioned itself at the heart of Nigeria’s political conversation.

[PHOTOS NEWS] Gambari to Paschal Mbawuike Led Delegation: Strong Institutions Key to Nigeria’s Democracy

Nigeria’s former Chief of Staff and one of the country’s most respected diplomats, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, has called for renewed efforts to strengthen democracy, good governance, and national institutions as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Thursday during a meeting with a delegation of Nigerians in the diaspora led by Paschal Mbawuike, Gambari stressed that robust democratic values and effective governance are critical to supporting weak institutions and advancing national development.

He also emphasised the urgent need to reinforce national unity and security, noting that peace and stability remain fundamental to a prosperous and inclusive Nigeria.

The Paschal Mbawuike led delegation, based in the United States, is currently in Nigeria on a fact finding mission to assess developments in democracy and security ahead of the 2027 polls.

Gambari, a retired diplomat, founder of the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development, and former Chief of Staff to late President Muhammadu Buhari, reiterated his vision of a peaceful Nigeria that delivers shared benefits and opportunities for all citizens.
