[IN PHOTOS] Hope in Action: COKE Delivers Lifeline to Abuja Community Through Food and Medical Outreach

Abuja, Nigeria . April 7, 2026.

In a remarkable display of compassion and community service, the Campaign Operations for the Kingdom of Elohym (COKE) has successfully carried out a food and medical outreach at the Karu Site Basketball Court in Abuja, reaching dozens of vulnerable residents with essential support.

The outreach, organised by the faith based group, provided free meals and basic medical services, including malaria testing, to members of the community many of whom expressed gratitude for the timely intervention.

Speaking to Boston online media at the event, the convener, Mr. Edache Qlaypole Ochola, emphasized that the initiative reflects a deep commitment to humanitarian service and social responsibility. He explained that the outreach is part of a broader mission to give back to society and uplift the less privileged.

“This is about showing love in action. We all have a role to play in supporting one another, no matter how little. Putting a smile on someone’s face can make a huge difference,” he said.

He also appreciated the support of Feed My Sheep, a United States-based organisation, whose sponsorship made the programme possible, noting that similar outreaches have already been held in Benue State.

Highlighting the health aspect of the programme, the Head of Medical Outreach, Joseph Anidh Agweye, revealed that free malaria testing was conducted as part of efforts to improve community health awareness. He added that the initiative also aligns with preparations for the upcoming World Malaria Day on April 25.

Community stakeholders also praised the effort. Coach Sani Damian of the Karu Abuja Hilltop Warriors Basketball Association described the outreach as impactful and meaningful, noting that it has brought renewed hope to many struggling families in the area.

Residents who benefited from the outreach expressed appreciation, describing it as a much needed intervention during challenging times.

The event underscores the growing role of faith based organisations in driving grassroots development and delivering critical support to underserved communities.

Umahi Named 2025 Infrastructure Icon, Reaffirms Transparency in Nigeria’s Road Projects

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has been honoured as the 2025 Infrastructure Transformation Icon by Al Jazeera Media Group, in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s road and infrastructure development.

The award was presented on Wednesday, March 18, at a high-profile ceremony in Abuja, following what organisers described as months of careful evaluation and consultations.

In his remarks, the organisers praised Umahi’s leadership and results-driven approach, noting that his work aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They highlighted major infrastructure projects under his supervision, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Second Niger Bridge, and the Mararaba-Keffi corridor.

The award committee also addressed public concerns about transparency, stating that its independent investigations in 2024 found no evidence of corruption linked to the minister. It added that its forthcoming 2025 anti-corruption report further supports this position.

In his acceptance speech, Umahi described the award as significant because it was based on verified, on-site assessments of completed and ongoing projects. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stressing that all projects are open to scrutiny.

“There is nothing we do in the Ministry of Works that we cannot defend,” he said.

Umahi revealed that anti-corruption agencies, including the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), have been invited to review procurement processes and project execution. While the ICPC has completed part of its assessment, arrangements are ongoing for the EFCC to begin its review.

The minister also defended the shift from asphalt to concrete road construction, explaining that the move is aimed at ensuring long-term durability and reducing maintenance costs.

He attributed the achievements recorded in the sector to the support of President Tinubu and reiterated his commitment to improving connectivity across the country.
Umahi also called on journalists to uphold accuracy and professionalism, emphasising that credible reporting must be based on verified facts.

The ceremony ended with applause from dignitaries, as the minister dedicated the award to Nigerians and pledged to continue delivering infrastructure that supports economic growth and national unity.

[IN PHOTOS] Nigeria, EU Dairy Firms Partner to Boost Local Milk Production

The Federal Government has begun discussions with major European dairy companies to strengthen Nigeria’s dairy industry and increase local milk production.

The engagement took place on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, in Abuja during a meeting between the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, and representatives of the EU Dairy Coalition of the Willing.

The coalition includes three leading global dairy companies Arla Foods, Danone, and FrieslandCampina which together have more than 400 years of experience in dairy production and strong international market presence.

Welcoming the delegation, the minister described the coalition as a partnership of capable and willing investors whose expertise could help transform Nigeria’s dairy sector and reduce dependence on imported milk.
Maiha emphasized that improving livestock genetics is a key factor in boosting dairy productivity and achieving meaningful growth in the sector.

You can talk about livestock transformation for decades, but without improving the productivity of the animals, we will not achieve meaningful results. Genetics is therefore central to this collaboration,” he said.

The minister also noted that Nigeria has a huge market for dairy products and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to working with international partners to strengthen the dairy value chain and increase local production.

As part of the proposed collaboration, Maiha suggested the establishment of a breeding centre to improve cattle genetics and increase milk yields across the country.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, the Coordinator of the EU Dairy Coalition of the Willing, Sanne Simmers, described the meeting as productive and said both sides share a strong commitment to developing Nigeria’s dairy industry.

She explained that the coalition aims to support Nigeria in improving dairy productivity through better cattle genetics and stronger collaboration with the Ministry of Livestock Development.

According to her, combining global expertise with Nigeria’s vast agricultural potential will help unlock sustainable growth in the country’s dairy sector.

The partnership is expected to play an important role in strengthening local milk production, creating jobs, and improving food security in Nigeria.

Nigeria has taken a major step toward joining the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, received the Council’s Secretary-General, Izzana Salleh, in Abuja on Friday.

The meeting focused on Nigeria’s possible transition from observer status to full membership in the intergovernmental body, which represents leading palm oil producing nations including Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Honduras and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Salleh said Nigeria’s observer status will expire at the end of the year and early discussions are needed to ensure a smooth transition. She also announced that the Council is ready to waive Nigeria’s membership fees for two years if it becomes a full member.

She explained that the CPOPC promotes cooperation among producing countries, addresses trade barriers, and supports sustainability standards in global palm oil trade. The Council also engages with international bodies such as the United Nations and the World Bank to protect the interests of member states.

In his response, Tuggar described palm oil as a strategic commodity for Nigeria’s food security, rural development and economic diversification. He said Nigeria currently produces about 1.4 million metric tonnes of palm oil annually but consumes nearly 3 million tonnes, adding that the country has plans to increase production.

The minister noted that joining the Council would strengthen Nigeria’s voice in global agricultural trade discussions and help the country benefit from technical support and sustainability frameworks.

Both sides agreed to begin consultations with relevant ministries, especially the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, to formalize Nigeria’s pathway to full membership.

Finance and Digital Access Key to Rebuilding Lives of Displaced Nigerians Stakeholders

Access to financial services and digital connectivity has been identified as a critical pathway to restoring dignity, independence, and economic stability for displaced persons in Nigeria.

This position formed the focus of a high level session convened by development partners and private sector stakeholders under the IDP Solutions platform, where experts emphasized that without access to money, banking services, and digital tools, internally displaced persons (IDPs) cannot effectively rebuild their lives.

The session, supported by UNFPA Nigeria, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, UNHCR Nigeria, and UNDP in Nigeria, highlighted the role of inclusive finance in driving economic recovery for vulnerable communities.

Participants noted that savings platforms, secure payment systems, and access to digital financial tools enable displaced families to start small businesses, manage risks, and build resilience against future shocks. According to speakers at the event, financial inclusion is not just about transactions, but about empowerment and long term sustainability.

They stressed that strengthening collaboration between the humanitarian sector and Nigeria’s private sector is essential to expanding access to banking services, mobile money, and digital connectivity in displacement affected communities.

Development partners further underscored that equipping displaced persons with the right financial tools supports self-reliance, reduces dependency on aid, and promotes economic independence.

The session concluded with a call for increased investment in digital infrastructure and innovative financial solutions tailored to the needs of displaced populations, as Nigeria continues efforts toward sustainable recovery and inclusive growth.

FG Begins Implementation of ASUU Salary Agreement, Approves 40% Allowance Increase from January 2026

The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of key welfare components of its renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), marking a major step toward strengthening industrial harmony and stability in Nigeria’s university system.

The development was confirmed on Monday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, who announced that the government has fulfilled its commitment to implement a 40 per cent increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for ASUU members, with effect from 1 January 2026.

According to the minister, some federal universities have already begun reflecting the approved increase in the salaries of academic staff. He added that formal notifications are being issued to all federal universities to ensure uniform and nationwide implementation of the increment and its full integration into institutional payroll structures.

Dr. Alausa, in a directive to Vice Chancellors, also stressed strict compliance with the framework for implementing the Consolidated Tools Allowance (CATA). He noted that the allowance has been duly captured and circularised by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) and that its inclusion in the 2026 budget follows an established statutory process.

The minister urged university managements to take proactive steps and make judicious use of available resources to ensure prompt payment of CATA in line with NSIWC guidelines. FG Launches New Cancer Control Plan, Opens Eight Preventive Oncology Clinics Nationwide

Abuja — The Federal Government has unveiled a new National Cancer Control Plan and Nuclear Medicine Policy as part of renewed efforts to reduce the growing burden of cancer in Nigeria, with a strong focus on prevention and early detection.

The policies were launched on Wednesday in Abuja by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, during a ministerial briefing held to mark the 2026 World Cancer Day, themed “United by Unique.”

Dr. Salako said the National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP) 2026–2030 and the National Nuclear Medicine Policy and Strategic Plan—the first of its kind in Nigeria—represent a major milestone in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the health sector.

According to the Minister, the Tinubu administration has made unprecedented investments in cancer care within a short period, prioritising prevention, early diagnosis and access to quality treatment.

He noted that cancer remains a leading cause of death globally, with about 20 million new cases and over 10 million deaths recorded in 2025, adding that low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria are among the most affected.

Dr. Salako explained that over 40 per cent of cancer-related deaths are linked to preventable risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets, obesity and air pollution. He said the government is therefore strengthening prevention strategies, expanding screening services and integrating cancer-preventive vaccines into the national immunisation programme.

As part of efforts to improve early detection, the Minister announced that eight preventive oncology clinics are now fully operational in federal tertiary hospitals across the country. These facilities offer routine cancer screening services to Nigerians.

The clinics are located at Federal Medical Centre, Abuja; FMC Ebute-Meta; University of Benin Teaching Hospital; University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu; Usmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto; Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe; Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano; and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife.

He also disclosed that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), will provide free cancer screening services nationwide throughout February, with programmes planned across the six geopolitical zones.

Speaking at the event, the Director-General of NICRAT, Professor Usman Malami Aliyu, said the institute is expanding cancer research, strengthening cancer registries and establishing national screening centres to improve outcomes.

He stressed that early detection remains critical to improving survival rates and reducing cancer-related deaths in Nigeria.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to working with local and international partners, including the World Health Organization, to strengthen cancer care and improve the quality of life of Nigerians living with cancer.

Tinubu’s Economic Reforms Stabilising Economy, Rebuilding Public Trust – Information Minister

The Federal Government has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms are stabilising Nigeria’s economy, restoring public confidence and positioning the country for sustainable growth.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this during a virtual interview on ICAN On Air, a live programme of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), aired on Thursday.

Idris said the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange rate were deliberate decisions taken early in the administration to address deep structural challenges that threatened Nigeria’s economic survival. He noted that as of May 2023, about 26 states were unable to pay salaries, while nearly all government revenue was being used to service debts.

According to the Minister, although the reforms caused short-term economic pressure, they were necessary to correct long-standing distortions and ensure national resources benefit the wider population.

He said recent indicators show improvement in the economy, including stronger foreign reserves, easing inflation and growing investor confidence. Idris disclosed that Nigeria’s foreign reserves have risen to about 46 billion dollars, the highest level in almost eight years.

The Minister also described Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list as a major credibility boost that has improved the country’s access to global capital.

On tax reforms, Idris clarified that the government is not increasing taxes but simplifying the system, removing duplication and expanding the tax net to support development planning.

He stressed that rebuilding trust through transparent communication remains central to governance, adding that President Tinubu regularly reviews public feedback and adjusts policy implementation where necessary.

Addressing misinformation, Idris said the government is strengthening media literacy and inter-agency cooperation to combat fake news while protecting freedom of expression. He added that Nigeria has secured the bid to host UNESCO’s first Category-2 Media and Information Literacy Institute.

The Minister urged Nigerians to remain patient, assuring that the benefits of the reforms will become more visible in infrastructure, education, healthcare and other sectors.

CAC at 35: Information Minister Says Commission Now Pillar of Nigeria’s Economic Credibility

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has described the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s economic credibility, citing its reforms and contributions to transparency, corporate governance, and ease of doing business.

The Minister made the remarks in Abuja while receiving the Registrar-General and Chief Executive Officer of CAC, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, SAN, who led a delegation of the Commission on a courtesy visit ahead of its 35th anniversary celebration scheduled for February 9, 2026.

Idris commended the Commission for what he called remarkable institutional reforms that have repositioned CAC as a key driver of Nigeria’s business environment. He noted that the Commission’s digitisation efforts align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and broader public sector reforms.

He praised CAC’s role in improving the ease of doing business, strengthening investor confidence, and supporting Nigeria’s recent delisting from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list, describing it as a major milestone for the country’s global image.

According to the Minister, achievements recorded under the Tinubu administration, including improved investor confidence and economic stabilisation, cannot be fully told without acknowledging reform-oriented institutions like the CAC. He assured the Commission of the Ministry’s support in promoting its reforms and programmes through public enlightenment.

Earlier, the CAC Registrar-General, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, SAN, said the visit was to formally invite the Minister to the CAC@35 anniversary celebration and present a scorecard of reforms under the current administration.

He disclosed that the Commission has fully transitioned from a manual registry to a technology-driven institution, expanding its online services from 33 to over 100, deploying artificial intelligence for business registration, and introducing API services for key institutions.

Magaji added that CAC’s Beneficial Ownership Register has enhanced transparency, brought millions of informal businesses into the tax net, improved security through the registration of POS operators, and strengthened Nigeria’s corporate disclosure framework globally.

The event was attended by top officials of the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

PoliticsFG Ties TVET Payments To Biometric Attendance, Begins Nationwide Enforcement by George38(op): 9:57am On Feb 04
FG Ties TVET Payments to Biometric Attendance, Begins Nationwide Enforcement

The Federal Government has begun full enforcement of biometric attendance verification across all centres participating in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Programme, linking all payments strictly to verified records.

The Federal Ministry of Education announced that the enforcement took effect from February 1, 2026, following a directive issued in December 2025 mandating all TVET training centres to install biometric attendance systems for real-time monitoring.

According to the Ministry, biometric verification is now the only approved method for validating attendance under the TVET Programme. As a result, payments to training centres and monthly stipends for trainees will only be processed based on confirmed biometric data.

The Ministry warned that any training centre that fails to comply with the policy will not receive payment, while trainees in such centres will also lose their monthly stipends. Persistent non-compliance, it added, could lead to affected centres being removed from the programme, with trainees redeployed to centres that meet the requirements.

Reaffirming its stance, the Ministry described the policy as mandatory and non-negotiable, noting that it is designed to protect public funds and ensure that programme benefits reach genuine participants.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has invited more training centres to join the TVET Programme. Interested centres are required to obtain accreditation from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and complete their applications through the NBTE TVET portal.

Students enrolled in the programme have also been advised to confirm that their centres are fully compliant with the biometric attendance system to avoid disruptions to their stipends. Complaints and support requests can be submitted through the official TVET support platform on the portal.

The Ministry of Education said the move reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and effective service delivery in empowering Nigerian youths with practical and employable skills.

FG Pushes Translational Research to Drive Health Innovation, Economic Growth in Africa

The Federal Government has called for urgent investment in translational research across Africa, stressing the need for the continent to move from being a source of raw research data to a driver of scientific innovation, healthcare solutions and economic growth.

The call was made by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate (CON), at the SPARK Translational Research Boot Camp and Conference 2026, held on Monday in Abuja.

The event was jointly organised by the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), SPARK Global at Stanford University, and the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), a programme of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Speaking at the conference, Prof. Pate said Africa must strengthen its local research ecosystems to address growing health and development challenges, including population growth, rising non-communicable diseases and global health emergencies.

He noted that while scientific research has driven global improvements in life expectancy and disease control, Africa still contributes only a small share of global research output and funding.

“The risk is that Africa remains a centre for data extraction rather than innovation,” the Minister said, calling for deliberate investment in clinical trials, regulatory systems and science governance.

Prof. Pate added that Nigeria’s ongoing health sector reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, are anchored on evidence-based policymaking, with research playing a critical role in healthcare delivery, regulation, health security and the development of the healthcare value chain.

In his remarks, Professor Kevin Grimes, Co-Director of SPARK at Stanford University and Vice President of SPARK Global, said the initiative aims to help African researchers translate scientific discoveries into products and services that improve lives and drive economic value.

He said African scientists possess world-class talent but often lack access to structured support and industry expertise needed to commercialise research outcomes.
Earlier, the Director-General of NIPRD, Dr. Obi Adigwe, said the conference was designed to bridge the gap between science, policy and impact-driven innovation.

He stressed that scientific breakthroughs can only make real impact when supported by political will and effective policymaking, warning that science globally is facing threats from funding cuts and misinformation.
Also speaking, the National Coordinator of PVAC, Dr. Abdul Mukhtar, highlighted the central role of research and development in Nigeria’s healthcare reform agenda, noting that strong R&D is essential for local manufacturing, innovation and job creation.

Dr. Mukhtar said Africa currently accounts for about two per cent of global R&D spending, urging stakeholders to strengthen the link between research, financing and commercialisation.

Participants at the conference, including policymakers, researchers, industry leaders and development partners, agreed that strengthening translational research is critical to improving health outcomes and positioning Nigeria and Africa as active contributors to global scientific advancement.

The conference ended with renewed commitments by the Federal Government and partners to support research, innovation and clinical trials as part of a broader strategy for sustainable health and economic development.

PoliticsEducation Ministry Says ‘living History’ Textbook Not Approved For Nigerian Scho by George38(op): 10:26am On Feb 03
Education Ministry Says ‘Living History’ Textbook Not Approved for Nigerian Schools

The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed claims circulating in public discussions and online reports suggesting that a History textbook titled “Living History” is approved for use in Nigerian schools.

In a statement issued on February 2, 2026, the Ministry clarified that the book is not approved, recommended, or endorsed for use in any school across the country.

According to the Ministry, “Living History” was never submitted to the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), the statutory body responsible for the evaluation and approval of instructional materials in line with the national curriculum.

As a result, the textbook was neither reviewed nor recommended by NERDC and does not appear on the Federal Ministry of Education’s official list of approved History textbooks.
The Ministry said consultations with NERDC leadership and a review of the current approved textbook list confirmed that the book does not form part of instructional materials authorised for nationwide use.

It therefore urged parents, teachers, school owners, administrators and the general public to disregard misinformation and speculation surrounding the book, including claims of ethnic exclusion, and to refrain from using it in schools.

The Ministry warned that the use of unapproved textbooks undermines curriculum standards and could negatively affect the quality of teaching and learning.

It reaffirmed that all approved instructional materials strictly comply with the national curriculum and are designed to reflect Nigeria’s cultural diversity, shared history and national values, while promoting inclusiveness and unity.

Members of the public were advised to verify the approval status of textbooks through official channels, particularly the NERDC, before adopting them for educational use.
