Politics / Biafra, Cameroon May Fight For Independence Together by Gerarahere: 6:55pm On Feb 25, 2016 |
– Camerron’s political prisoner alleged that Biafra main join forces with Southern Cameroon – IPOB is ready to work with any group which wants to be freed from prosecution – The security analyst says that coalition is very possible, while UK government denied such development Ebenezer Akwanga Ebenezer Akwanga, the human rights activist and former political prisoner, in the interview granted to the IBTimes UK has said that Biafra movement in Nigeria may join its forces with Southern Cameroon to achieve independence. Akwanga supposes that human right violations of secessionist mobvements in Southern Cameroons are the same. The man, who is now the president of the Southern Cameroons Youth League, was imprisoned and tortured in 1977 in Cameroon for six years due to his political activism. The activist believes his people might collaborate with pro-Biafrans in south-eastern Nigeria, who are also willing to become independent. “Political sequences took place which affected our culture, language, traditions, everything that makes us a people,” he said. READ ALSO: Asari Dokubo speaks about Biafra name “Around 1984 the Cameroon Anglophone Movement started. It was first looking for a return to a federal system of governance and later on became the Southern Cameroon Restoration Movement. “The Southern Cameroons Youth League was born and our goal was simple: We wanted the total and unconditional independence of the Southern Cameroons.” On the other hand, a coordinator of Indigenous People of Biafra in Anambra state, who asked not to be named, confirmed pro-Biafrans and people in Southern Cameroons might join their forces. “IPOB is ready to work or join forces with any group seeking for independence from slavery and persecution. And our people in Southern Cameroon are not any different,” the coordinator stated. David Otto, CEO of UK-based global security provider TGS Intelligence Consultants, has said that a coalition between the two separatist movements is very expected and could further destabilize the region. He said: “Although the Southern Cameroon National Council (SCNS) is purely a peaceful movement, they could be tempted to join forces with the Biafra movement, which has been vocal in their willingness to use arms against the Nigerian government. READ ALSO: Kanu’s wife reveals why her husband supports Biafra “The Biafran movement will prefer to use their affiliation with members of the SCNC to secure a safe haven in Cameroon or perhaps use Cameroon as a point to launch attacks against the Nigerian government. “The entire region will be in chaos from both ends and it will be easier for Boko Haram terrorists to hijack the opportunity and extend southwards in Cameroon and Nigeria.” “There is no need for government to wait until arms and violence becomes the only option. Self determination referendums have been successfully done in many countries including Ethiopia, UK, Canada, Spain, etc. In a democratic setting, let the people decide their destiny.” The UK government speaking on the development, said: “The position of the UK government during the Biafran War is a matter of historical record. The UK government’s position, which reflected the Charter of the Organisation of African Unity, was to recognise the borders laid down at Independence. “The Biafran War caused great suffering and the UK supported the reconciliation work that followed the conflict. The UK supports the territorial integrity of Nigeria and President Buhari’s commitment to work for a secure and prosperous Nigeria for all Nigerians.” President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has always claimed that the unity of the country is a priority and that while peaceful pro-Biafran protests are welcome, asking for the separating the Biafran territories is against the constitution. The Nigerian police also denied accusations of violence during pro-Biafran protests, saying that security forces had to intervene as pro- Biafrans “were armed and disrupted peace in the state.” The arrest of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu in October last year caused a new wave of protests.

Crime / MASSOB Backs Ex-militants’ Ultimatum To FG by Gerarahere: 11:59am On Feb 21, 2016 |
The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra has thrown its weight behind the 31-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government by ex-Niger Delta militants who are demanding for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. The former militants, in a demonstration of solidarity with the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra and other pro-Biafra activists had asked the Federal Government to release Kanu within 31 days or face severe consequences. In an interview with our correspondent, the MASSOB National Director of Information, Samuel Edeson, said the pro-Biafra activists were in support of the step taken by the ex- militants. Edeson explained that the pro-Biafra agitators and the ex-militants were fighting the same cause. According to him, although the secessionists do not believe in using violence to actualise the struggle, the former militants are free to employ any means they deem fit towards realising the goal. “We (MASSOB) support them (ex-militants) because if they felt that it is the only way for them to go about the struggle, they have the right to do what they are doing. They have not taken up arms against the country and the Federal Government, they are only making a demand,” Edeson said. He, however, stated that the Biafra activists were not in a partnership with the ex-Niger Delta warlords. “We are not working in partnership with them but we are fighting the same cause. They are Biafrans and we are also Biafrans. We as MASSOB, we don’t believe in violence but they, as militants, want to use the approach they know best, and the means at their disposal, to press home the demand for Nnamdi Kanu’s release. We are not working in partnership but we are all fighting a common cause as Biafrans. We don’t know them (Niger Delta militants) in person. “We have come to understand that the Federal Government believes in violence. If not, why will they go to Aba where MASSOB and IPOB members were praying and shot at them?” he said. Edeson accused the government of promoting strife instead of peace and dialogue by refusing to release Kanu. He also accused the Federal Government of treating Igbos differently. “Maybe the Federal Government wants to see what the Igbos will do. In this country called Nigeria, if a non-Igbo person does something the Federal Government will not bother, but if an Igbo man does the same thing the Federal Government will treat him as a criminal,” Edeson said. |
Politics / Abia Royal Fathers Demand Unconditional Release Of Nnamdi Kanu by Gerarahere: 9:31am On Feb 21, 2016 |
Royal fathers in Abia State, yesterday evening requested President Muhammdu Buhari to unconditionally release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Director of Radio Biafra. The monarchs made the request during a town hall meeting between the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, and stakeholders at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia. The custodians of the people’s culture also demanded for security vote to enable them contribute effectively to community policing in their domains. Speaking on behalf of Abia Council of Traditional Rulers, His Royal Majesty, Eze (Pastor) Philip Ajomiwe, enjoined Arase to “tell Mr President to release our son, Nnamdi Kanu.” Eze Ajomiwe, who is the Chairman of Umuahia North Council of Traditional Rulers and Traditional Ruler of Oriendu Autonomous Community, maintained that the unconditional release of Kanu would bring about peace in the land. He said the monarchs were highly disturbed by the silence of Mr President on matters concerning IPOB and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Baifra (MASSOB). The foremost traditional ruler and agriculturist pledged their commitment to ensuring peace and security in their domains but demanded that they should be provided with security vote since no one could catch an armed robber with bare hands. Similarly, he made a case for proper equipping of the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force for optimum productivity. He specifically mentioned that patrol vans and arms should be provided for officers and men of the police. He said that the royal fathers were supportive of the President’s war against corruption and pledged their support to his administration. Responding, the IGP promised to take the message of the royal fathers to President Buhari. Earlier in his opening remarks, Arase canvassed a return to the traditional way of providing security in the villages before the arrival of the western form of policing. “In Africa, we had traditional ways of policing our community but we failed to merge it with the modern form of policing. We have to go back to the basics,” Arase said. He maintained that the police alone could not police the country without the active support of stakeholders. Also speaking, Abia state governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, disclosed that the state has presented 20 patrol cars to the IGP to equip the Police in the state to do its work well. He said the donation marks the beginning of a working relationship between the state and the police with a view to securing the state. Arase was in Abia on a one-day working visit to Abia. |
