Literature / Soyinka To Hold Private Funeral On Trump’s Swearing-in Day by gevisaf: 2:29am On Dec 06, 2016
Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Monday, vowed to hold a private funeral on January 20, 2017, the day the United States President-elect, Donald Trump, will be sworn in, threatening to also move his foundation out of the country in protest against unwarranted commentaries generated by the Green card issue.

He had, last week, in Johannesburg, South Africa, told the world that he had destroyed his Green Card to protest the election of Donald Trump in the last U.S presidential election.

A visibly angry Soyinka, who spoke in Lagos about the controversy that arose over his threat to destroy his American Green Card, following the election of Mr. Trump, said the private wake will have nothing to do with U.S. politics but the death of common sense among Nigerians.

“I’m going to hold a private wake on inauguration day not to mourn the decision of Americans in the choice of President but to mourn the death of Nigeria common sense,” he said.

He said the commentaries generated, especially on social media, by his threat to destroy his Green Card might force him to “Wolexit.”

“Wolexit” is a term coined by the literary icon after the “Brexit” referendum in the United Kingdom.

Soyinka, who had earlier used the term to describe his decision to quit the U.S, however, said he had not decided the nature the “Wolexit” might take as it could either be internal (which would see him withdrawing to his Abeokuta sanctuary (Ijegba), external, or mixed.

Describing the whole controversy as a “theatre of the absurd,” Soyinka said he was puzzled that it was something even worth the fuss it generated.

“I hope to leave here today with a little knowledge. I’m puzzled and I don’t know what the fuss is all about.

“Why do you wail more than the bereaved? I’m addressing these illiterates who feel they want to make themselves heard,’’ he said.

He said destroying his Green Card was not the first time he had undertaken such gesture to express his reservation over certain issues, narrating how he destroyed his national medal during a protest at the Race Course (also known as Tafawa Balewa Square) in Lagos during a protest he undertook with late Tai Solarin.

He said: “I took out my national honour medal and I stamped on it. I could have done something else but I would be accused of indecent exposure.

Crime / Senate To Deal With Govt Agencies Violating Procurement Laws, Says Saraki by gevisaf: 4:31am On Nov 12, 2016
Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has threatened that the Senate will take up the case against any ministry, department or agency of government which is violating the Public Procurement law which compels them to give preference to locally produced goods in Nigeria.

He also charged Senate Committee Chairmen to ensure that in the course of their oversight duties that MDAs comply with the provision of the law on patronage of local manufacturers as he also urged all military and para-military agencies to emulate the Army by procuring items like boots and other needs locally.

Saraki made the threat last Thursday in Abuja when members of the Leather and Allied Products Manufacturers Association of Abia State (LEAPMAAS) visited him to express appreciation for the constant support he and the Senate have given to the Buy Made in Nigeria campaign.

While responding to the welcome address by the co-ordinator of the Association, Chief Ben Hart, Saraki said the government spends more than N2 Trillion annually in the purchase of goods, and that the aim of the Senate is to ensure that a large chunk of the funds go into the pocket of Nigerian manufacturers. He advised local manufacturers to petition the Senate where they feel a government agency is deliberating denying them the opportunity to sell their goods as he said the law making institution was ready to take up such cases.

Kamarudeen Ogundele, Ado Ekiti

The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, says the attempt by President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to borrow $29.9bn to finance the 2016 budget will plunge the country into depression, urging the Senate to reject the proposal.

In a statement, Fayose, who said that the Senate President Bukola Saraki’s body language appears to be in support of Buhari’s request, added that “any attempt to subvert the wishes of Nigerians, who had rejected the proposition, would amount to a betrayal of trust.”

The governor also said the ruling All Progressives Congress would implode before the 2019 general elections.

Fayose spoke in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, on Thursday while delivering a lecture titled: “Journalism: Antidote to Economic Recession,” as part of activities marking the 2016 Press Week of the Ekiti Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

The governor, who criticised Buhari for blaming the past governments for the economic woes of the country, said borrowing $29.9bn would push the economy from the current recession further into depression

He also said his recent support for a former Lagos State Governor, Ahmed Tinubu, should not be...

Politics / Lawyer Begs Court To Stop National Assets Sale by gevisaf: 2:52pm On Oct 30, 2016
A Lagos-based lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, has urged a Federal High Court in Lagos to perpetually restrain President Muhammadu Buhari from executing his proposed plan to sell some national assets as a measure to tackle the economic doldrums in the country.
The lawyer said in his suit that Buhari planned to sell national assets such as the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Ltd, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the Port Harcourt Refining Group Ltd, the Kaduna Refining Group Ltd, the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Ltd, the Africa Finance Corporation, the East West Rail Lines and the West African Gas Pipelines.

He, however, argued that the plan to sell the national assets was contravened the Public Enterprises (Privatisation and Commercial) Act 1999, particularly Section 1 (1)(2)(3) of the Act.

Akingbolu said Buhari had by his plan to sell the national assets admitted his failure and lack of ideas to deliver the country from the present economic and political doldrums.

Describing the national assets as the golden eggs and national heritage of the country, which formed a formidable base for Nigeria’s economic and social security, Akingbolu urged the court to stop Buhari before he dissipated them.

Joined in the suit as the 2nd defendant is the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN).
The plaintiff claimed that if Buhari was allowed to sell the national assets, the nation would be plunged into deeper economic and political woes.
The lawyer said, “Over the years, successive governments have sold off some of the national heritage in the name of privatisation by alleging that same will bring more economic gain to the nation, however the reverse has been the case.

FACTS ABOUT THE YORUBAS AKA AFONJAS
( 1 ) . Their story of
kingship began with Edo
prince and the Benin
recorded History .
( 2 ) . Ayayi crawder said,
little were know about
yoruba existence,
meaning they were not
part of Nigeria of today
boarder or were in small
settlement close to
dahomy. yoruba are half
muslims and those with
African traditions copied or got them from Benin
civilization . I doubt if they not immigrants from dahomy
mix with Benins or other fulani- hausa from Niger
. Bishop Samuel Adjayi Crowther (c . 1809 – 31
December 1891 ) Was the first African Anglican bishop
in Nigeria . Born in Osogun (in today's Iseyin Local
Government, Oyo State , Nigeria ) . His grandson was
Herbert Macaulay
( 3 ) . Yoruba have dublicity of kingship with the process
highly politized to being traditional . A system they try
copy from Benin but can 't get it real like the Benin
Kingdom. Edo Obaship is one of the most revered
institutions in the world because of the way it has
sustained its awesome prestige with strict and
meticulous attention to ancient traditions of valour ,
discipline and integrity . Edo chieftaincy titles cannot be
bought or conferred on non- indigenes or frivolously .
Every Edo chief performs a peculiarly sacred duty
and responsibility to the people of Edo. It does not make
sense , therefore , to think that a people who would not
and have never conferred their chieftaincy titles on non-
indigenes, would voluntarily invite , accept, or surrender
to non- indigenes as their kings . Due to celestial
origins , the Edo monarch cannot eat out and cannot be
diverted from full time palace duties to hustle
for contracts .
( 4 ) . Most of today
yoruba religion are
Benin Origin , Olokun ,
Ogun , Iha oguega (ifa ) ,
oronmila, Esago
(shango ) , Ayelala etc .
Many Benin traditions
and spirituality are
stillfully documented by
yorubas in high places
as YORUBA ? (Never mind the Edo man ' s christian
mindset quickly dening Edo have niothing to do with
African traditional religion , agreeing they are foriegn to
Edoland . . . LIE ) .
Although the Great Edo ( Benin ) Kingdom were not major
participants in the trans- Atlantic slave trade , because
the Obas (Kings ) believed that their subjects were too
valuable to sell away , and their noblemen had need of
war captives on their own farms , the influence of Edo
religion and medicine has still been substantial upon
the people of the Americas .
According to Mason (1996 ) , it has been widely
accepted that Olokun ( god of the sea ) worship
originated with the Edo and spread to the Yoruba ( p. 2) .
In fact, the most prominent part of Edo cultural
traditions that has made its mark in the New World is
Olokun worship. Olokun (god of the Waters ) worship
originated from Urhonigbe and then became prominent
at Ughoton around the Ethiope ( Olokun) River . The
priesthood and rituals were firmly established at the
time . Some of the possible points of contact happened
early. During the Ogiso Period , trade with the Yoruba
and Igbos was quite extensive. Olokun worship may
have spread to those areas through traders . Prior to the
Oba Period , Ekaladerhan Izoduwa was initiated into
Olokun as a chief Priest while he stayed at Ughoton ,
before his moving westward with his followers to
establish Ilefe ( Ero , 1999 , p . 108- 109) .
Once he arrived , Ekaladerhan Izoduwa brought Edo
traditions to those areas and was a King of his new
community called Ilefe , which could be what yoruba call
IFE. . From Ekaladerhan Izoduwa ’ s loins , the Yoruba
dynasties may have began. However, it is certain that
Olokun is an Edo divinity whose worship spread to the
outlying Yoruba areas.

A man has made a startling claim about how he was drugged and sexually assaulted by two strange women.

Dailysun SA reports that the South African man whose name is withheld reported to the police how his weekend turned awry after being raped and robbed. The man said he arrived at his home in East Park, in Kagiso, Mogale City from an entertainment centre when two women who he thought were in distress approached him as he parked his Mercedes-Benz.

“They asked for help and protection, claiming they had nearly been raped by a gang of men a few minutes before,” he told police. He allegedly invited them to stay in his house while he continued to enjoy a few drinks.

According to him, all he remembered was inviting them in and having a drink with them. When he woke up at 3pm that afternoon, he was naked and discovered he had been drugged and raped. His Benz was missing, as well as his bank cards, cellphone, driver’s licence, travelling bag, Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime and his wedding ring!

Politics / Breaking: I Won’t Support Buhari For 2nd Term – Aisha Buhari by gevisaf: 8:23am On Oct 14, 2016
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife has warned him that she may not back him at the next election unless he shakes up his government.

In a BBC interview, Aisha Buhari said the president “does not know” most of the top officials he has appointed.

She suggested the government had been hijacked, saying a “few people” were behind presidential appointments.

Mr Buhari was elected last year with a promise to tackle corruption and nepotism in government.

His wife’s decision to go public with her concerns will shock many people, but it shows the level of discontent with the president’s leadership, says the BBC’s Naziru Mikailu in the capital, Abuja.

The president famously remarked at his inauguration that he “belongs to nobody and belongs to everybody”.

In the interview with Naziru Mikailu, Mrs Buhari said: “The president does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don’t know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years.”
