What do u expect MR OTDR, I can't start a livestock farm, especially cattle farm and purchase grown up cows I won't b able to control, not possible for me. In a year time, the females will b matured enough to conceive. Some of the females might conceive before a year as they're close to 8months before purchased. This is not piggery, goat or sheep farm where u can buy matured animals to start up. Concerning the carpet in d troughs as you've mentioned, its to protect feed from water and to cover d lapses on the base of d wooden feed troughs. The wooden cover of the troughs are with carpets as well, just to protect from rainfall.. OTDR: I am loving this thread. GGfadar, Im curious, are all your cows too young to conceive? Also, whats the purpose of the sheets on the feeding troughs, or could it be you put them because the floors of the wooden feed troughs have lapses? |

Agriculture › Re: Goat Farming Business: Goat Farming - Rearing And Selling Made Easy by GGfadar(m): 8:07am On Nov 16, 2015 |
GGfadar: Sincerely, goat business, either breeding for meat production/milk production or buying and selling is highly lucrative, breeding of goats isn't dat easy truly but its requires standard management.
A lot of things need to b considered....
Most importantly
* shelter * feed * pasture * security, most especially against predators
U can never run a backyard goat farming biz and make money due to cost of feeding except its for home/personal consumption.
At least one/two acres of land should be enough for 30 goats to graze as a starter and d land should b flourished with gd pasture.
For south westerners dat wish to start, I will advice u cross breed northern/Niger/chad breed with our dwarf breed, only then u can avoid environmental adaptation issues, feed selection challenges and some other risk factors...
NOTE : Every beginner must get enough knowledge before starting and should b ready for mortality issues. I'm not saying its 100% sure thr will b mortality but note dat its part of d challenges any starter should prepare for. I started small and expanded well with very very low mortality rate due to full attention I gave to the goats. Thanks to my old man dat put me through....
Goats need more attention dan sheep mostly during the rainy season. Wish anyone interested GOODLUCK...

On point OTDR: @op with all due respect, with little research on goat farming the internet one can easily become a goat farm "consultants". Perhaps, it is best you show readers photos of your goat farm ( if u have any) so we can see how well your goats are doing. Atleast proving u are a practical farmer would go a long way in confidence building. The growing numbers of theoretical farmers on this site is sickening. Photos they say, say a thousand words. Readers would be very delighted to see how well your goat farm biz is doing.Thx |

Nice 1 nikashow
Was really interesting but couldn't stay long.. Our govt has a lot to do about Agriculture and we farmers really need to help ourselves. IITA is really helping with their research program and I'm sure they're ready to assist farmers in everyway to succeed, the only WAHALA is one has to get whatever u need from IITA through a representative(AGENT).
I see some of their plantation on my way to farm. Mechanised farming is really interesting.

Yes, the females will graze and live together with the males... There's nothing wrong with that except a female delivers a calf, then can be restricted for a certain period of time. Concerning the land space you mentioned, its been extended truly. The other guy owns the plot. dgitrader: nice work bro. this I think is an ideal setup for any beginner herder. but will the females be allowed to roam freely with the males? this plot looks bigger than typical 50*100feet. |

First thing............ U can't raise a LAMB from December to next year sallah festival ( ILEYA ) and make profit at all. Get rams dat r about 8months -- 1year old and raise ( FATTEN ) till next year sallah. The 5 rams can consume 1 bag(50kg) of wheat offal, 1 bag(50kg) of dry cassava peel and 25kg of PKC all mixed together in a week. The cost of feed will b lesser if there's enough pasture for them. Cost of medication should be minimal if animals arrive farm in good condition. A bag of wheat is about 2,500naira in my area and a bag of dry cassava peel in my area is 750naira/850naira. PKC is 35naira per kilogram in my area. I hope dis info helps Adenex3051: @GGfadar you have really done well. If a quarter Nigerians are this industrious and selfless with information, this country would be a lot better. Sincerely I think you deserve an award. (All that has benefitted this, if you all agree with me kindly like this post) GGfadar pls how much will be enough to raise 5 kid rams from.December to Ileya 2016. Thanks |
