So IITA in ibadan had its annual open day today. The event which was strictly by invitation was both informative and entertaining.  As a research institute, many agricultural innovation were on display.
Find some of them below. I'll just let the pictures do the talking.

2nd Pic: Yours truly wink grin and the DG of IITA, Dr.Nteranya Sanginga. He has been the DG since  2011. He is from DR of Congo and well traveled and verse. You can Google him.‎

Further enquiries on any of the products should please be directed to their office in ibadan as I am not an IITA staff.

Though there are some things I saw that I am going to personally follow up and acquire, as I am hugely vested into agriculture as well.‎

This are plantain 'seeds' ! The seeds can only be cultured in a green house as the germination rate is still very poor and so it's not yet available for sale. but Kudos to them as they seem to be actively working on this innovation! The seeds are transplanted in 3 stages of growth and acclimatization before they take to the field.

Now I know a lot of nairalander farmers would be interested in this one ! I am too ! It's a weeding machine! And I heard it's available for sale. It's imported and can work between furrows depending on the spacing. As You can see from the teeth, the thing would scatter all those unwanted weeds!

This bag (3rd pic) produces the small yam tubers in second pics which when replanted give the large yams that the farmer needs. The bags are used for propagation exclusively...but am sure someone here is thinking of some sack farming already. I think it would work well for potatoes.

Before our cassava guys vex for me...lols...first pic is grater and mulcher (or whatever they call it), beside it is the 'press'.

2nd pic is boom sprayer with a wide range (I've forgotten the range now)

3rd Pic is Cassava harvester- pulled by a tractor.

Some other interesting things-

1st Picture is a 'museum' of seeds, kinda like an archive. This are collected seeds. They said this are the kind of groundnut and cowpea that our parents and grad parents eat but we don't grow again because it takes extra time to prepare, but they think it's as nutritious, so they collect and preserve the seeds. Some were straight up black, striped, coloured etc‎

2nd, as usual- plenty oyinbo everywhere with their bicycles, shorts etc- it's not a new thing for IITA frequenters sha- and we are all treated the same, no discrimination or preference.

3rd Pic: A raffle draw was held, first price gets a tour to an African country. Unfortunately, I no win am cry...many consolation prices around though‎

1st pic: Plantain propagation chamber.

2nd Pic: Different types of maize, some fortified with specific things.

3rd pic:  ‎This is for soyabean. It's an inorganic fertilizer. They said it gives a 45%increase in soyabean yield per acre. And the pack works for 0.25ha. Called it 3$ per pack. Sounds fair to me...‎

4th Pic: Maybe because I am a fish person I wasnt too impressed with the Fish of their 'IIYA' sha...though the least size they sold was 1.5kg‎

Which of these processed foods can I commercialise oo? Will 9% bank interest not hinder my idea? hmn. IITA well done.

Nika show. That was thought of you. I just hope their doors will be open and their staff welcoming to provide the needed support to the Entrepreneur when they come calling.

Those "I get idle funds and dont know what to invest on" come and learn here o.

Please I need that boom sprayer lying fallow there!

Thanks for sharing these pictures. As per the museum of seeds, it is still eaten in the rural areas. For us in Imo/Abia State we call African yam bean. Odudu and it is high in protein and fills the stomach quickly. It is also mixed in Abacha (African salad) but it takes so much time to cook!

That Bambara groundnut is what the igbos call Okpa, it commonly prepared in the South East and one would certainly come across their sellers hawking it around. It is also here in Kenya though eaten by a certain tribe.

From the cowpea section, l can identify with some of them also common with South easterners such as Akidi, Nzam (Lima bean), Okwe. fiofio (pigeon peas) and some others l have eaten here in Kenya because they consume vast varieties of cowpeas.

Nice 1 nikashow

Was really interesting but couldn't stay long..
Our govt has a lot to do about Agriculture and we farmers really need to help ourselves.
IITA is really helping with their research program and I'm sure they're ready to assist farmers in everyway to succeed, the only WAHALA is one has to get whatever u need from IITA through a representative(AGENT).

I see some of their plantation on my way to farm. Mechanised farming is really interesting.

GOD bless Nigeria

Am currently in the process of getting one. He said it costs about 400$ at the time of my asking...and it would take about 5 working days for me to have it delivered in ibadan. The marketer on the stand said it came in from U.S
