Phones / Mtn: An End To An Era Of Impunity. by ghostntommy: 8:28am On Oct 31, 2015
Borrowing from the words of Jonathan Kozol: The fact that a crime might have been committed with impunity in the past may make it seem more farmiliar and less gruesome, but surely does not give it any greater legitimacy."
Looking at the series of events, replies, retribution, jubilation or "wailing" as it were that has graced the recent slamming of a whooping N1.4Trillion on telecoms giant MTN has been in the least of all, an interesting display of the proverbial rat and trap. Whoever owns the farmland between the two is only a matter of time.
Ours is a country where the citizens are being treated as slaves in their own land. Ours is a country where its people have little or no say as to what happens to them. However, as its written in the holy book, weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
In over ten years of the existence of the telecoms giant MTN, ripping off as always been the word. Are we to talk about the outrageous sales of sim cards, or about the per minute billing system, or the compulsory recharging of your line, or the forfeiting of your money after some days if you have no one to call (ofcourse, aw many people could afford to then), and later to different forms of deduction of money on peoples account, all the unsolicited sms being received on a daily basis. (Gone are the days when you feel happy whenever your message alert beeps, thinking that a special friend just remembered you). All in all, theres been a so called injustice meted out to the million subscribers of MTN.
From my own opinion, i think the time is coming (if its not here yet) when foreign companies will stop seeing themselves as helping us. No. They are not helping us, but rather, we are all helping each other. The argument that the company has reduced unemployment, contributes to gdp, provides CSR or whatever other arguments are all one sided. CSR to start with is a civic responsibility of every organization, and MTN is not the first, neither will it be the last to perform such. Even the so called CSR, do you know how much they make on their MTN Project Fame programme. Also, they could only contribute to the gdp because thay have the market to sell their service. A nation of over 120 million. Mind you, this same people are still being checked for tax evasion. In the area of unemployment, its only in a country like Nigeria that its people are being treated unfairly. If you trade your services in a location (and for more than ten years at that), i think your conscience should judge you if you dont have more than atleast 50% of your staff from your host country. 10 solid years.
Many thanks to NCC for standing tall to be able to stand up to this impunity of our so called foreign investors. How i wish other commissions and agencies will do same. Talk of NBC, NERC, NAFDAC and so on. Enough is enough.
From records, this wont be the first time this organization will be flaunting the rules of the land. How long will they continue to form boss for us. How long before we as a country will rise to say no to slavery in our own lands.
There is a new era in the nation, and i think its high time this people see us for what we really are. We are not coward, we are not fools, we are not lazy. We deserve respect. We deserve the best. We are Nigerians.

The more i consider the fact that our nation is faced with a lot of security challenges, ranging from terrorism to kidnapping and so on, the more i think it necessary that the sanction on MTN be carried to the letter. Many souls have been lost. Many are homeless, displaced in their own country, refugees in their own country. The inability to be able to trace the lines they use to carry out their hideous acts is something worth crying over.
Enough is enough. Let this be a signal to other organizations both local and foreign to always consider the interest of their customers before anything else by following whatever rules and guidelines that their monitoring agencies have stipulated for them.

God bless New Nigeria.
