Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo has vowed to keep kidnappers out of business as the government will continue to demolish their hideouts. A statement from the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo, said in Owerri on Tuesday that the demolition was part of the measure to prevent kidnapping and other violent crimes in collaboration with the security agencies. The statement quoted the governor as expressing concern about the trend of kidnapping which he described as "ugly" during his visit to the Department of State Services (DSS). "The government is battle ready to end kidnapping and violent crimes in the state to ensure the safety of lives and property of the residents. "Let me again warn criminals and kidnappers to get out of Imo because this is not a place for you. We are ready for you," Okorocha was quoted as saying. He recalled that four years ago before he assumed office as governor, kidnappers and other criminals traumatised the state until his administration brought it to a halt. He said the government would continue to demolish houses belonging to kidnappers or any building where kidnap victims were kept. The governor advised parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their wards and report suspicious movements to the security agencies. "Any house of any kidnapper or where a kidnapper is found will be demolished. "Moreso, houses of kidnappers' parents will equally be demolished if their lifestyle and means of livelihood did not justify the buildings," he said. Earlier, Mr Francis Ejiofor, the Director of the DSS, said the command had set up a task force in the three zones of the state to combat crimes . He said the task force had recorded successes in tracking and arresting kidnappers in the state. Ejiofor said the department arrested six kidnap suspects while their victim, Mr Nnawike Chilaka, was freed after being held captive for five days. He said the suspects included a security man from Niger Republic, a student of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, a female secondary school student, and three others. All Progressives Congress’ state governors have expressed concern over the ongoing leadership crisis in the National Assembly. They have therefore decided to invite their senators and prevail on them on the need to respect party supremacy on any matter. The decision was taken at a late night meeting the APC governors had with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday. The meeting which was held behind closed-doors ended in the early hours of Wednesday. At the end of the meeting, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State told State House correspondents that he and his colleagues were worried by the development in the National Assembly and decided to rub minds with the President on the matter. He said they also used the opportunity of the meeting to commend the President on the steps he has taken so far to address the issue of the economy of the nation which he said was literarily in shamble.Okorocha described the meeting with the President as more reassuring, adding that there is light at the dark end of the tunnel. He said, “With all these achievements and progress we are making, we are worried by the pockets of disagreements going on at the National Assembly.“We have resolved that we came from a party and our party’s views should be respected.“So, we feel that there is the need for us to invite our senators and look more into the matter and see how we can all make peace.“We believe that everyone should respect our party from which we all came from and for that reason, we have decided that we are going to invite our senators and rub minds with them.“We are saying that there should not be a winner-takes-it-all; that we should carry everybody along and accommodate others as suggested by the party.”Also, Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State said all they agreed on was that senators should adopt the position of the party.“We were all elected on the platform of the party. We are not just a collection of individuals, we are a political party and when the party has spoken we must listen, otherwise if it was a game of individuals like golf then individuals can go their way.“I think it is very clear at this point that the party has the responsibility to keep the system going, so we as progressive governors, we have listened to the President and we have discussed extensively and we are clear that the party’s position should be supported by the senators.“This is the way it should be and we should start on a note of working closely. We as governors, we listen to the party, we expect our senators to also listen to the party.“We are going to call them and tell them this is it and explain our reasons, it is about party supremacy. The meeting, which started at about a few minutes before 11pm on Tuesday, was attended by 16 APC governors.Buhari had, earlier in the day, met with all state governors. The first meeting which was at the instance of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum was to find a lifeline for state governments who have been unable to pay salaries because of financial crisis. Some of the governors later joined some traditional rulers from the North for the traditional breaking of Ramadan fast before attending the late night meeting. The Immediate Past Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has said the state was in comatose when he assumed office more than eight years ago. Amaechi, in Abuja on Tuesday, added that because his government was accountable to the people, he would not shy away from giving the account of his administration to the electorate. The former governor was reacting to series of allegations made against his government by his successor, Mr. Nyesom Wike, at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday. Amaechi, who spoke through his former Commissioner for Information, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, said the sorry state of the state was made worse due to many years of militancy and criminality that, he said, forced government and business in the state to a standstill. Semenitari said most of the issues being raised by Wike were also contained in the assignment the governor gave to the commission of inquiry he set up to look into how he ran the state. The former commissioner said, “Amaechi inherited a state that was in comatose and in dire need of infrastructure. Years of militancy and criminality had forced government and business in Rivers State to a standstill. “He therefore embarked on land reclamation in our riverine communities and the massive construction of roads, bridges and interchanges all over Rivers State. “Realising there is a direct link between state of infrastructure and the growth rate of any economy, It is to the credit of the Amaechi administration that by the time he was leaving office, he had completed 90 per cent of the Phase 1A of the Rivers State Monorail, completed two major interchanges, two flyovers, 25 bridges, and five shore protection projects. She said the Amaechi administration also completed 890 kilometres of the on-going 1,424 kilometres road projects across the state. She added that there were over six land reclamation/shore protection projects at Andoni, Opobo, Buguma, Abalama, Olumbie/Owukiri Island, and Oba-Ama-Okrika with over 1,140,000km completed. “Out of the roads completed, some of these were federal roads for which the Rivers State Government was owed N108billion. Mr. Wike as Minister of State for Education was among those who prevented former President Goodluck Jonathan from paying the Rivers State Government back these funds,” the former commissioner added. Semenitari said that other states like Akwa Ibom and Abia received repayment for the federal roads they constructed. On the debris being owed the Ministry of Works, she said when Amaechi was leaving office, the debts owed the contractors, which she said were for ongoing road projects, totalled N44,942,354,44.10. Besides, she said that the last government was owing two banks N17.7bn – Agriculture loan from the Central Bank of Nigeria – N2 billion; Zenith Bank, N15.7 billion. Semenitari denied the claim by Wike that she was contacted by security agents before her official car was forcefully taken away from her residence in Port Harcourt. According to her, “I find it strange that Mr. Wike says that I was contacted by security agencies. It might have been necessary that he provides proof of such contact. “I am also shocked that he conveniently failed to acknowledge that it was an eight year old car and that it was not factory proofed. “He also failed to state that it was given to me after several threats to my life because of my job description and that this isn’t strange as he himself as chief of staff was aware that there are political office holders who are allotted official vehicles from government house as the need or circumstances may dictate.” “Over and beyond all this, can Mr. Wike please confirm if, as commissioner, I am entitled to leave with the official cars used during my tenure and if indeed he, as chief of staff and later minister of state, did so.” Semenitari said at no time did she claim that the Lexus Jeep forcefully taken from her residence belonged to her husband and that what belonged to him was a Range Rover jeep. The meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the state governors on Tuesday rose with a resolution to end the financial crisis being faced by some state governments. Zamfara State Governor, Abdulazeez Yari, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of the meeting. Yari, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, said instead of bailouts, the governors requested for the refund of Federal Government projects they carried out in their states. He said the governors also asked that the tax paid by the Nigeria Natural Liquefied Gas Company be paid into the Federation Account and be shared. The governor added that they also asked the Federal Government to ensure that all monies are paid into the Federation Account for sharing as stipulated by the constitution. ————————————————————————————– President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo are currently meeting behind closed-doors with all state governors. The meeting, holding inside the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, is the first of its kind since Buhari’s inauguration on May 29. Issues such as the debts being owed state governments by the Federal Government and the lifeline being sought by state governors in order to meet their states’ demands are expected to dominate discussions at the meeting. The meeting started at exactly 10.10am with the arrival of the President. Among state governors in attendance when the meeting started were those of Rivers, Ogun, Imo, Gombe, Benue, Delta, Niger, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Kogi, Borno and Jigawa. Read the PDP press statement below... The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as evasive, diversionary and preemptive, the present government’s pile up of excuses for possible failure in delivering on its campaign promises to Nigerians. The PDP said it is unfortunate that President Mohammadu Buhari and the APC, who were privy to the nation’s dwindling economy occasioned by global economic downturn and fall in international oil price, even before the start of the campaigns, chose to deceive Nigerians with bogus promises, only to now resort to excuses after using the promises to secure power at the center. PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh in a statement on Tuesday said the party notes with dismay, President Buhari’s statement on Monday that Nigerians should not expect much from his first 100 days in office on claims that he met “virtually an empty treasury and huge debts”, noting that such only underlines the fact that the present administration is really not equipped to face the challenges of governance. “While we restate our resolve to engage only in credible and issue based opposition, we want the President and the APC to note that their plea for patience from Nigerians does not arise, because ab-initio, there has not been any indication that they are actually serious and determined to deliver on their campaign promises upon which they rode to power. “Of course Nigerians are willing to support and cooperate with the President, but we are worried that the pictures emerging from his presidency and his party do not in any way inspire hope in the citizenry, especially as they have continued to show that theirs is ostensibly a matter of obtaining power by false pretenses. “President Buhari and the APC must know that Nigerians did not give them the mandate to engage in frivolous excuses and pleas but to hit the ground running with solutions and quick fixes they promised during the campaigns. We ask, is President Buhari’s statement an admission of poor knowledge of national and international economic affairs or does it underscore the lack of capacity and skills by the administration to effectively harness and galvanize resources and potential inherent in Nigeria which has already been nurtured as Africa’s largest economy and one of the fasted growing in the world. “Even if Nigerians decide to wait endlessly, we wonder how much the President can achieve amidst the flip-flops from his presidency and cacophony of interests from his party leaders struggling to enlarge their selfish political and economic frontiers. “How can one reconcile President Buhari’s statement with the recent ridiculous and misleading claim by APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed that this administration has achieved in three weeks what the immediate past administration did not achieve in five years? “Since after their electoral victory, the APC and the President have continued to expose their lack of commitment towards their campaign promises. “We recall that on May 5, 2015, twenty-four days before his inauguration, President Buhari at a meeting with APC leaders in Abuja opened the excuse galore when he expressed his nervousness to deliver in office, adducing that ‘Rome was not built in a day’. “We also recall that in their attempt to find an escape route in one of their bogus campaign promises, the APC denied that the President ever promised Nigerians that they will end insurgency two months after inauguration but had to swallow their words after the PDP confronted them with the April 22, 2015 CNN interview where Buhari made that promise. “Indeed, we empathize with the President knowing that the confusion and clear lack of direction in his party have not helped matters, but we urge him to rise up to the challenge, take urgent steps and disentangle himself from the selfish and unpatriotic tendencies of APC leaders, especially given the fact that Nigerians gave him a mandate for which they will continue to hold him accountable. “Finally, the PDP restates that it is eager to see the APC and the President unveil their economic roadmap and blueprint for governance so as to enable us through robust opposition, provide credible alternatives and options for their policies and programmes in the overall interest of our dear nation”. Abuja – Lovers of music converged in Abuja on Saturday/Sunday to join in the celebration of the annual World Music Day. The annual World Music Day is celebrated in over 460 cities in 110 countries in the world and was marked in Abuja with funfair at the French Institute. The idea of the World Music Day was born in France, where the first all-night music celebration marked the beginning of the summer solstice, which took place in 1982 in Paris. Miss Alice O'Reilly, a Cultural Programme Officer at the Institute français du Nigeria, said that this festival has become an international phenomenon celebrated on the same day World-wide. "This year's theme is: "Live Music Together' which aims at a large audience, working to popularise musical practice for young and old people from all social backgrounds. "It gives an opportunity to communicate and share a very special moment through music "Electronic Sounds capes Workshop'. "In 2015, the Alliance française Lagos, the Institut français du Nigeria and the Goethe-Institut Nigeria organised a workshop in electronic music aimed at expanding the artistic range of Nigeria's already booming music scene. "The traditional music forms and percussion- based style found in its diverse cultural regions. "The Nigerian music scene has, over time, been shaped by Western influences from the 50s and 60s (Highlife and Afrobeats) through the 80s and 90s (Hip hop and R & B). "At the turn of the millennium, electronic elements increasingly came into the various music styles, which nonetheless retained the traditional rhythmic structures in the society. "La Fete de la Musique" is above all a free popular music celebration that allows the expression of the styles of music in a cheerful atmosphere,'' she said. Mr Adedolapo Aina-Marshall alias Dj sketch, who performed at the event, said that the event allows Africans to enjoy dance with a fusion of our African music and the European electronic music. "Dance as you know it, came out of Africa, our ancestors started dancing and this brought about the dance culture which has evolved to what we have today. "Honestly I love the turnout of guests in Abuja, we didn't expect this much turn up and they made this World Music Day more fun and beautiful,'' he said. Disc Jockeys (Dj) Sketch also said that the popularity of DJs in Nigeria was getting better by each day. "We are getting more recognition in Nigeria now than in the past years, right now everybody wants to be a DJ. "We hope that this programme would help boost the value of DJ in Nigeria,'' he added. Oluwakemi Famugbode (Irawo Drumline) also said that the programme was a success, which started at printing press Lagos, and the grand finale in Abuja was a huge success. Famugbode said the programme was not a walk in the park, as we encountered numerous problems such as financial restrictions and lack of electricity amongst others. She said they started the preparation for the programme during the period of the fuel scarcity, saying that so much money had gone into the purchase of fuel at the black market rate. AIso speaking, Bobai Balat alias DJ bally said the programme turned out better than they expected, saying, "am really surprised that the audience turnout was more in Abuja than it was in Lagos. "I appreciate France who has always been a major supporter of the African social life and has given many of us the opportunity to show case our talents in music,'' he said. The electronic music workshop, labelled "Electronic Soundscapes" was facilitated by three internationally-renowned producers. These producers are: Adegboyega Oyedele, (DJ Afrologic; Nigeria), Marko Fürstenberg (Germany) and DJ R-Ash (France). The "Electronic soundscapes" was inspired by the 10 cities Project, which presented an intersection of club and electronic music between different European and African cities. The workshop was set up within this context and aimed at fostering artistic interaction among German, French and Nigerian musicians in the area of non-mainstream, independent electronic music. Fair-skinned actress, Edwin Princess, is a fast-rising actress in Nollywood. She was born in Anambra State but lived in Austria until she relocated to Nigeria to pursue her acting career. Edwin Princess has starred in movies like 'The Birds', 'Ibu's Wedding' amongst others. She was recently on a movie location in Festac Town, where she starred alongside Eze Nwora George, Ginika Maureen and others in her latest movie. In this exclusive interview, she talks about her life, career and more. When did you start acting? I ventured into Nollywood in 2013. What role did you play in the movie you're currently working on? I played the role of a wife, a woman who is good but is having a bad experience from her in-laws and other people. I was able to have babies for my husband but sadly they kept dying one way or the other. It was a very challenging role for me. How many movies have you featured in so far? I've done 'Sacrifice for Marriage', 'Ibu's Wedding' with Mr Ibu, Global Updates '89 Days In Bondage', Sparco which is on air and Ulo Mbasa, a soap on DSTV. So far, we've been working, we can't relent on our efforts and I expect more to follow. What has been your most challenging role in a movie? My most challenging role was actually in a movie I did with Global Update. It was really challenging because they had to take me somewhere in Badagry and I had to jump from one hill to the other. It was challenging because I'm not an athletic person. I saw myself jumping up and down from one tree to another, running in the bush even on a wet day. It was challenging for me. My second challenging role is Ulo Mbasa, the Igbo soap on air now, where I cheated on my husband. Have you ever played a sexy role in a movie? I have, I did it with Ezenwora George in a movie called 'The Birds'. I think that was my first sexy role in a movie, because I wasn't expecting him to kiss me and then he just grabbed me and kissed me. Can you go nude in a movie? I can actually do anything as long as it adds meaning to the story. When you talk about nude, there has to be a connection. You don't just go nude because you want to pull off your clothes. It means you have to be interpreting a role, a serious minded role that can wow viewers. I can go extra miles to perfect my job and my career but not just go nude because I need to go nude. It has to really go along with the story and be meaningful. What more should people expect from Edwin Princess? They should expect good works and appreciate what I'm offering, because I've just started to learn and I hope to give them my best in the nearest future.
