A middle aged palm fruit cutter, George Maduabuchi, from Owerrinta in Isialagwa South council of Abia State is now in police net for allegedly selling his 14-month-old son for N300,000.

President Goodluck Jonathan has been reported by the Osun Defender saying elected presidents do better in their second tenure in office because it is devoid of the usual election distraction.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that over 14,000 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been snatched by hoodlums from its officials during the collection exercise in Rivers State.


The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs Gesila Khan, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, on Friday.

According to Khan, some of the cards were stolen from collection centres in some local government areas, where the PVCs were deposited to enable the owners have easy access to them.

While it would mean that the owners would be disenfranchised, Khan expressed no panic, as she noted that the stolen cards would be useless.

Trouble started at the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship campaign rally in Dukku
Local Government Area of Gombe State, when cars belonging to the campaign

The national coordinator of the Yoruba ‘militant’ group, Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Chief Gani Adams, has advised the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) not to expect getting a bloc vote from the South-west in the February 14 presidential election.

He said a good number of Yoruba people still have reservations about people from Mr. Buhari’s ethnic group – Fulani.
Speaking in an interview with Nigeria Today, Mr. Adams disagreed with projections made by some political analysts that Buhari will make a clean sweep of South-west by virtue of the dominance of the APC in the geo-political zone, saying, “South-west is a place that you cannot use the media to deceive.

According to him, “For you to say we should go one way, it is impossible. I don’t think that the South-west will vote for Buharien mass.

They are at it again.

Boko Haram insurgents have raided six villages in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, according to a local hunter, Ibrahim Gulak.
Gulak, who spoke on the telephone from Michika, said the insurgents killed “several people” in the attack; kidnapped several youths and women and destroyed property worth millions of Naira in the areas.

He listed the affected areas as Mbororo, Shahu, Liddle, Garta, Kamale and Ghumci, adding that the communities were raided by the insurgentson Saturday night.


Gulak said the sect members attacked the area on Saturday at about 8pm when the villagers were preparing to go to bed .

He noted that the terrorists stormed the villages in their hundreds on motorcycles and few on vehicles, stressing that “the insurgents were mercilessly slaughtering people from house to house.”

He said they burnt almost all their houses after looting them, adding that most of the villagers fled to take refuge on mountain tops while some were killed by the insurgents.

“For now, I can’t say the number of casualties as we are still in the bush, but they slaughtered many people like goats. They also abducted many trapped residents, mostly youths and women,” he added.
Confirming the attack, a member representing Michika in the state House of Assembly, Adamu Kamale, said, “The militant Boko Haram has attacked our villages, killing people; they slaughtered many like rams and burnt houses.

“They kidnapped many youths and women.
“They attacked Mbororo, Shahu, Liddle, Garta, Kamale and Ghumci. The attack has continued since last Friday and no presence of security operatives in the affected areas.


“We are calling on the government to come to our rescue. Some of the fleeing residents are now trapped on mountains.”
No fewer than 10,000 Higgi people of Michika, mostly farmers, now live as refugees in Yola, the state capital and its environs.

Michika and other towns in the neighbouring Madagali, the home towns of the state governor James Ngillari; the Speaker of the state Assembly, Ahmadu Fintiri; as well as the former Special Adviser on Political Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmad Gulak, still remain under the control of Boko Haram.

U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, on Sunday arrived Lagos for an official engagement.

Kerry reportedly touched down in Lagos about 1 p.m. and headed straight for separate meetings with Jonathan and the main opposition’s presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

Kerry’s visit was announced on Friday during an emotional speech in which Kerry warned of the dangers of Islamist extremists worldwide.

He had earlier described the attack on Baga as a “crime against humanity” while the United States has warned of the threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty posed by the militants.


A senior US official told reporters travelling with Kerry that the insurgency, which is increasingly threatening neighbouring countries, would likely be raised with both Jonathan and Buhari.

“We have been working very, very closely with the government of Nigeria to address Boko Haram, and I can say very clearly that no country has done as much as we have to support Nigeria’s efforts.

“And we would hope that both candidates will be able to address the insecurity and address Nigeria’s response to Boko Haram,” the official said.


The US official said Washington expected free, fair and peaceful elections in Africa’s most populous nation.

“This election in Nigeria is being watched by the entire continent and in fact by the entire world,” the official added.


Despite calls from some quarters that the general elections be postponed, the United States has pressed for the elections to go ahead.
