Amaechi: My Brother’s Death Has Left A Huge Responsibility On Me

Former Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, Rt.Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi says the demise of his elder brother, Oha Charles Amaechi who was laid to rest in his country home, Ubima on Saturday, has left a huge family responsibility on him as it would be difficult to combine both family and official responsibilities.

Speaking at a church service organized for the deceased at the St.Thereaser Catholic Church Ubima, Amaechi said, ” He has left us with a huge responsibility that I never imagined would be so soon to confront and a challenge that I lack the capacity to discharge. Chikamkpa, Lemchi, Obinna, Judith and I will find it difficult to come to terms with his death. We can only pray that Dede rest in the bossom of the Lord. Continuing in a soft laden voice, Amaechi said, ” Dede, as he was widely known, was generous to a fault. Dede was a name given to him by me in reverence to his ubiquitous care and fatherly role in our lives.

He was everything to everybody and was full of life, he related with both the young and the old and got all his children educated. He protected all of us from the vagaries of the Nigerian society. He contributed to the payment of my school fees and ensured that we were not fatherless at the death of our father as he assumed the responsibilities of the family. He made my younger siblings complete their education and got them engaged in their different spheres of responsibilities”, he said.

In his remarks, Plateau state Governor, Simon Lalong who represented both the Nigerian Governors Forum and the Northern Governors Forum(NGF) said, the late Charles Amaechi lived a good life worthy of emulation. “The late, Sir, Charles Amaechi has done a good work because it is not easy to be a Knight, ours is to emulate him and his contributions to the church of Christ. I am here to represent the Chairman Nigeria Govamernors Forum, the person of Gov. Kayode Fayemi and also the Northern Governors Forum, which I’m the Chairman, to extend our condolences to Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for this great loss”,he said.

Lalong, however, donated a 32 seater bus on behalf of the Plateau state government to the church as a mark of remembrance for the good deeds of the deceased. ” Plateau State donates a 32 seater bus in love to the church, in Charles Amaechi’s name so that he will be remembered for what he has done,” he said.

In her condolence message addressed to her colleague, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of State,Transportation, Sen. Gbemisola Saraki, said the deceased lived a worthy life bequeathed with legacies for which he would be fondly remembered. “I wish to join you to offer gratitude to God for the life he lived and I urge you to continue to uphold his guiding values as a tribute to his loving memory”,she said. Also, Chairman of the All Progressive Congress ( APC) in Rivers State, Isaac Ogbobula, Esq described the deceased as a perfect gentleman and a devout Christian of the Roman Catholic faith and a Knight of St. Mulumba. “He was a committed and dependable party leader and regularly offered valuable and stabilising advice on burning political issues. Dede never lost hope in the APC but was always looking towards the brighter side of things for the party”,he said. The late Charles Amaechi died at aged 64 at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Rivers State.

Labour: APC says Wike should eschew gunboat politics

Recent faceoff between the leadership of labour Union and the Rivers State Government, has attracted mixed reactions from stakeholders, including the All Progressives Congress, APC.

While commending NLC, for its decision to halt further actions to press home her demands, the Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has through a press Statement by the party’s Spokesman, Ogbonna Nwuke, tasked the state government to “have a human face’, with a kinder and responsive system that is understanding, just and fair”.

In the statement released today, September 8, the APC said: “We have heard that the Rivers State Government and labour have settled their differences. It took last minute efforts which lasted late into the night to avert a crippling strike.

‘We believe that the NLC and its associates demonstrated uncommon maturity and discipline in allowing last minute discussions. Accordingly, the breakthrough recorded at the late night meeting is plainly as a result of the unique sacrifice made by labour in the overall interest of the state and nation.

“While we welcome the resolutions reached at the end of that very crucial meeting, it is our expectation that the Rivers state Government under the watch of Governor Nyesom Wike would fulfill its promise to workers.

“Government must have a human face and all of us have a responsibility to evolve for mankind, a kinder and responsive system that is understanding, just and fair. We hope that the Governor of Rivers State would learn lessons from this. His administration had no reason whatsoever to threaten sons and daughters of Rivers State who are part of the labour movement; and who are rendering essential services to the government and good people of Rivers State.

“We thank labour leaders for doing the needful. They have proved that the interest of the working class was more paramount in the decision they took to call out workers. We call on the Wike administration to eschew its gunboat politics. It has no place in egalitarian society and no place in a society that hopes to embrace a system of social responsibility. We cannot afford to have government which abhors the spirit of our Constitution while pretendng to act under the guise of promoting the Rule of Law”. https://africaupdatenewspaper.com/politics/45033/

The Department of State Security (DSS) has invited and quizzed Chairman, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) COVID-19 Palliative Distribution Committee, High Chief Sobomabo Jackrich. It was gathered Jackrich’s invitation was following a petition he sent to the National Assembly accusing the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of NDDC of diverting N6.25bn palliatives for Niger Delta region approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Jackrich, who confirmed the development, said the IMC petitioned the DSS accusing him of using the NDDC letterhead in the petition he sent to the National Assembly. He said: “I was invited August 24 to meet with the State Director of the DSS in Rivers state. The invitation, which came through a phone call from an operative from the Rivers State Command was said to be in connection with a petition from the Niger Delta Development Commission.

“The NDDC accused me, an appointee of the commission of using the letterhead of the NDDC to petition the National Assembly against the Interim Management Committee of the NDDC. For the avoidance of doubt and as a responsible citizen, I decided to honour the said invitation on August 25, 2020.

“It is important to note that I had in my capacity as Chairman of NDDC COVID-19 Palliatives Distribution Committee petitioned the National Assembly to investigate the alleged diversion and misappropriation of N6.25bn palliatives funds approved by President Muhammadu Buhari. I alleged in the petitions to both the Senate and the House of Representatives that the NDDC Interim Management Committee IMC led by Prof. Daniel Pondei has misappropriated the money undeniably”. Jackrich, however, said the DSS officials were professional while interrogating him as they gave him fair hearing. He alleged action of the IMC was designed to compromise his petition, which he said was pending before the National Assembly and other agencies. He insisted no amount of intimidation by the IMC would stop his moves and desire to secure justice for the people of the Niger Delta.

He said: “The DSS in their wisdom acting on the said petition by the IMC invited me and their engagement with me was highly professional as they fairly heard me. “However, these moves by the IMC is aimed at using state institutions and apparatuses to both circumvent and compromise the process over the petition which is yet pending before the National Assembly and other relevant agencies. “The IMC seeks to intimidate me from further insistence on justice in the matter knowing that the issues I raised in the petition against them are incontrovertible and undeniable. “Hence they resorted to seeking to strangely criminalizing my use of the Commission’s Letterhead without minding that I am an appointee of the Commission and my appointment is still subsisting with my appointment letter still very much alive.”

A member of the Interim Management Committee of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Evang. Caroline Nagbo, narrowly escaped assassination in Port Harcourt Tuesday morning. The incident which occurred after she attended Church service at Ozuoba in Obio/Akpor LGA was however aborted due to the swift reaction of security agencies following distress calls made to the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services.
A clearly shocked Evang. Nagbo thanked God for her protection and commended the gallantry of the security officials. She was full of praise for the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command; the Director, State Security Services, Rivers State Command and Head of Security at the NDDC, Mr. Tonye Frank Oputu, whose professionalism and very timely intervention she noted aborted the plot to harm her. Evang. Nagbo also thanked her colleague in the Interim Management Committee and Acting Executive Director, Finance & Administration, Mr. Effiong Akwa, for his prompt response to the rescue effort and commendation of the Commission’s security for their exemplary diligence upon her arrival at the Commission’s Headquarters.
Caroline Nagbo having reported the matter to the Police called on the Commissioner of Police and other security agencies operating in the State to intensify efforts in tracking down those who are after her life, noting that criminal elements terrorizing the State must be flushed out to secure the lives of law-abiding citizens and end scaring away investors in the petroleum and gas resource-rich State who are providing gainful employment to the teeming graduate and skilled population in the State.
