“Tell me about yourself.” Victor started when he was through with his meal and molade still helped herself to the big chicken he’d ordered for her. She doubted she could finish it and she had told him she wouldn’t.

But he had insisted though the rice had been delicious and filling.

“I don’t have much to say.” She shrugged. “I should be asking you though.”

“We’ll, the little I know about you is that you had a boyfriend some weeks ago and you’re trying to move on.”

“Enough about me. I need to know about you at least before I agree to a second date.” Molade knew most people in the office knew about her predicament of herself and Lamido but she wasn’t going to let it hurt her anymore.

Victor laughed and adjusted himself on the chair. “See bribery o.”

“Look at who’s talking. You were the one who bribed me into eating with you after telling me you’ll take me home.”

“We’ll, I was just being a gentleman.”

“Okay, so lets hear it, I hope you’re not married sha?”

Victor gave her a sad smile. “I was until it got annulled.”

“Oh I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. It’s been 3 years anyway.”

He looked into her eyes and realized she truly meant that she was sorry. He suddenly saw her vulnerability looking into her eyes and he wondered if it was just some trick to get him to like her.

Could a pretty girl like her still feel and act innocent like she was doing?

He’d set eyes on her days after she resumed work at their company and sometimes, he would stroll to her department in the name of checking on some reports whereas, he wanted to see her. He wanted to talk to her but she was always occupied and he noticed the consistent flowers and chocolates that found their way to her table every morning and that had made him step back though that wouldn’t have stopped him on a normal day but he didn’t want to be in her bad books.

And so the day he’d found out that it had stopped, the day she’d been absent from work after a certain news, he knew he had to make his move.

But he needed to know if she was over him or not before he could propose anything to her.

“So, tell me about him.”

“About who?”

“Your ex boyfriend.”

Molade blinked and looked down. “It wasn’t meant to be.”

His hands reached for hers and she jerked away immediately. “I’m sorry but I have to go home now. It’s getting late.”

“Okay.” Was all victor could mumble as he watched her get to her feet.

It was obvious the girl he wanted was still attached to her ex one way or the other and he couldn’t blame her.

His had taken time to heal as well.

Lamido was glad to arrive on time at his fathers house in Abuja and was so exhausted he hurriedly sneaked upstairs to take a quick shower before his parents realized he was home or they would bombard him with so many questions and so many enquiries and right now, he was so down emotionally that he couldn’t think straight. He had intentionally avoided telling them he would be flying to Abuja today so as to avoid any ceremony of welcoming him home. He felt like his heart was ripped right out of him when Molade had walked out of his life many mornings ago. He wished he could call off the wedding, run away with her and forget everything else but where would that leave the both of them without his parents blessings? What if his father took matter into his hands and tried to hurt Molade because she stood in the way?

And god! He loved her, he loved her so much he doubted if he would survive the wedding procedure with Aisha when for days he could hardly sleep and days he succeeded, he dreamt of molade. He dreamt of their beautiful moments together. He dreamt of how she made him happy and how she often sat close to him and held his hands. How she fed him without restrictions from what she was eating.

How he’d loved to wake up every morning and see her by his side.

He stopped and sank into the bed. Closing his eyes.

Molade wasn’t going to be the one sleeping next to him in some weeks time.

Neither would he be the one to love her the way he wanted to.

It would be someone else. Some other guy loving her, holding her, she would be in someone else’s arms looking into his eyes.

He wouldn’t be the one to be there when she was happy, when she was sad, when she got pregnant, when she pushed their baby into the world, when she talked to him about God and the excitement that shone through her amazing eyes.

He knew he had to do something to stop his raging thoughts or he’d run mad.

After a shower, he got thirsty and decided to go downstairs and get something to drink and probably chew when he heard his mother talking to someone downstairs in the living room. He was about to walk in on them when he stopped the moment he heard Aisha’s name mentioned.

He stood still and listened. He wasn’t the type to eavesdrop but the conversation was beginning to sound interesting.

“Aisha is just 21 and just rounded up her housemanship earlier this year. The girl says she wants to further enlighten her herself with the affairs of this world but Alhaji will hear nothing of it. He tells her to marry first and then she can discuss that with her husband. You know our men now don’t you?”

Temi nodded sadly. “As bad as I want Aisha for my son, I do respect her wishes. You know I’m a Yoruba woman and from where I come from, most of our people believe that our women should get her degrees first and everything else before they marry because once they marry, they begin another life entirely.”

“True”

“But what is your daughter saying all the same?”

“Ah…, what else do you want her to say?”Asibi replied. ‘She has no choice in a matter like this. Not now when we’ve printed their IVs and commenced preparation. Imagine the commotion it will cause.”

Temi nodded. “But I hope she really wants to marry my son because I don’t want a situation where husband will be doing his own thing and wife too will be doing her own thing…”

“Leave that to me to sort out..” Asibi smiled as she raised the cup of tea to her lips before adjusting the gold bracelet on her wrist. “She too knows what is at stake if she happens to change her mind.”

The two women smiled at each other and Lamido returned to his room as quietly as possible.

He knew he had a chance and he was going to do all he could to take it.

;;;;;;;;;;;;::;;:;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;:;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

Lamido waited patiently till Mrs Hassan left the house and kept counting the seconds with which his mother would return from her escort of her visitor. When he heard her humming and realized she had stepped into the foyer, he came out of hiding and headed towards her from the living room.

She almost jumped out of her skin when she saw Lamido and punched him slightly.

“Oh you this naughty boy! you almost scared me! When did you arrive? How come I didn’t see you when you came? You need to be calling me so that I can send the driver to pick you up rather than stress yourself.”

Lamido laughed and bent to kiss his mother. It amazed him the way she still thought him a boy after all these years.

“Mum, we need to talk.”

Temi frowned. ”I hope there’s no problem?”

“It’s about the wedding…’

“What happened to it?’

“I don’t think I’d be fair on Aisha by marrying her after all I heard you say with her mother.”

“Were you eavesdropping? When did you arrive and how come I didn’t see you?”

“Let’s forget that part and get to the matter at hand. Mum, this whole wedding thing…, I doubt it’s gonna work between myself and Aisha.”

“Why not?”

“Because I’m in love with someone else.”

Temi sighed. ”I knew it. I just knew it. Ever since you went back to Lagos, my mind kept telling me that something might come up and please don’t tell me it’s some girl from your past.”

“I believe she’s my soul mate mum and I’m scared I might regret it for letting her go. The first time was a coincidence, this time, I can’t bear to let her slip out of my hands knowing that I could have prevented it.”

“Who is she?”

“Molade. I’ve been in love with her since Unilag.”

“That girl that almost got you killed. Alakoba omo ni girl yen oo. Lamido, please stay away from her and live a peaceful life with Aisha. See her working her way through to your brain and your marriage once more. I can’t allow it.”

“Mum, please stop it. You hurt me when you make hurtful statements about her. I Love her mum and you of all people should understand how Love works. If I marry Aisha today, there’s no one who’s going to work out things for me when I tire of her. You Love Daddy don’t you? and you two married because you love each other. You were always happy telling me your story while I was growing up and I wanted so bad to emulate you. Do you want me to marry and be miserable?”

“What about Aisha? You’re going to hurt her feelings and bring shame upon her family. Upon both families.”

“Leave me to talk to Aisha. If she really wants to be a free bird rather than get stuck in a marriage, then it won’t be hard talking to her. Promise me you’ll listen to her when I bring her home?”

His mother shook her head in wonder. This Love of a thing was like a strong intoxicating drink that seemed to have drowned her son completely.

“Okay.” she managed and Lamido had vanished from her sight.

Season 2 Episode 8

Molade tried telling herself to get a grip weeks after she’d told Lamido goodbye but she knew she was still having a hard time realizing the truth that soon, she was going to have to get married to someone else whom she would have to grow in love with. She knew healing took time and God would help her but even the songs she was listening to wasn’t helping matters. Sometimes, she would sleep off with Adele’s ‘Someone like you‘ crooning softly from her phone or switch to Whitney’s ‘I will always love you.’

When she realized that she would only end up hurting herself more if she kept listening to those songs, she deleted them and tried to replace them with something better and lively. Something that would remind her of Gods goodness and mercies. Something that would make her remember that God had her in mind no matter what.

Her sisters were helpful as well and they took her out when they went out to have fun and she was glad. They talked, they ate, they took pictures and she focused more on her job trying to be productive as much as possible and got her hands on some hand crafted things that she could make starting with her nephew and nieces.

On one of those office days when her car was at the mechanics for servicing, Molade knew she would have to find her way home on a commercial vehicle and so she packed her bag, her laptop and pulled on her flip flops to ease her journey. She had just stepped outside the office building when the latest Chevrolet stopped right in front of her.

The driver wound down and she was able to see who was at the seat.

She recognized him as the director in charge of the finance department. He was handsome no doubt, had good looks and reminded her of Yemi Pedro though She wasn’t really familiar with him since she’d heard he was in one way related to the CEO of the company where she worked and so she had dutifully minded her business.

But she often saw him around, lingering sometimes in her own department.

“Hi…” He greeted from his car and gave a slight wave unlocking the automatic door already as she could hear the click.

“Good evening sir.”

“Good evening. What happened to your car?”

“It’s at the mechanic sir.”

“What way are you headed to? I should be able to drop you somewhere close.”

“I want to go and enter obalende sir. From there I should be able to find my way to my house.”

“Hop in, I’m heading that way myself.”

Molade was doubtful at first most especially since the man looked like someone in his mid 30s and highly sophisticated and seemed to have a kind of aura about him but since he had offered her a ride and it wasn’t like he was a stranger, she entered and closed the door behind her.

“Thank you sir.” She tried to pretend she didn’t see the rings on his finger she wondered if he was a fashion model, a married man or an occultic man. The tales her friends had told her about while she was in school made her a little bit nervous since they had mentioned occultic men possessing lots of rings they used to hypnotize pretty girls.

Fear had its own torment.

“Where do you stay?” He asked as he turned down the volume of the radio in the air conditioned car.

“Ikoyi, dolphin estate.” She felt it wise to mention shade’s place since that was where she would be sleeping tonight.

“Do you live alone?” His eyebrow shot up as he pondered on how a girl like her could afford a place like that.

“No sir, I live with my elder sister and her husband.”

“Ohh, I see.” He tapped on the steering wheel absent mindedly and glanced at her. “Seatbelt please.”

“Oops, sorry.” She smiled to herself as she dropped her luggage and fixed her seat belt.

“I’m Victor by the way.”

“Okay…” She mumbled wondering if the man wanted her to be calling him by name when everybody knew and called him by his surname. Mr Kenshiro.

He laughed. A throaty laugh. ” I assume you expect me to know your name miss Williams.”

“Well, I…”

“Molade Williams.” He glanced at her again. “It’s a beautiful name.”

“Thank you sir.” Molade began to wonder where the conversation was going. She hardly knew anything about the guy and there was no way she could call him by his first name at work.

Except the man was proposing something else which she wasn’t sure she would be ready to accept.

“I was thinking we could go out for lunch some other time when you’re free.”

Molade swallowed. The man did not even waste time at all.

What was she supposed to say?

“Err, I don’t think that will be a good idea sir since I…”

“Do you have a boyfriend?” He cut in

“No sir.”

“So that’s a yes for me.” He passed her his phone and urged her to put her number into it while he drove. “Be a darling and save your number into it. I’ll call you. And don’t worry, I’m not gonna eat you. It’s just a harmless lunch between 2 friends.”

Molade’s mouth hung open as she watched him give orders but she closed it in time to do as she was told. Even if she didn’t put In her number, he would get it from the office so resisting him would only cause ceremonial chase which she wasn’t ready for.

When she was through, she passed it to him and he dialed it immediately so that he could hear her phone ring.

When he was satisfied, he smiled and dropped it.

“Are you hungry?”

“I’ll get something to eat at home.” She’d idnt want to lie.

“I want to stop by at TFC and get something to eat. You don’t mind do you?”

“We’ll, I should be able to find my way sir.”

“I insist.” He gave her his charming smile and tapped her hand slightly. “Let this be our first outing together and don’t worry, I’ll drive you home.”

“I don’t know what to say sir…”

“Say you’ll gladly eat with me and that solves it.”

Molade smiled. “I will gladly eat with you.”

And he stepped out of the car to help her out as well.
