The epicentre of the new coronavirus outbreak in China, Wuhan says over 3 million residents have been tested for the pathogen since April. The State Media stated that tests will continue and this time will be focused on the rest of its 11 million population. The official Xinhua News Agency reported that the test, upon completion, is to help give the authorities a clear indication of the number of asymptomatic cases as businesses and schools reopen. Priority will be given to residents who have not been tested before, people living in residential compounds that had previous cases of infection, as well as old or densely populated estates, Xinhua said, citing a Wuhan government meeting. Fears of a second wave of infections flared over the weekend after Wuhan reported a cluster of infections, the first since a virtual lockdown on the city was lifted on April 8, raising fears of a second wave. The latest infections were previously asymptomatic cases, people who had the virus but showed no symptoms such as a fever. Reuters, citing an internal document to district officials, reported on May 11 that the city planned to conduct the campaign of city-wide nucleic acid tests over 10 days. That would entail millions of tests being conducted in a narrow time frame. Wuhan conducted a total of 1.79 million tests from April 1 to May 13, according to Reuters calculations based on daily reports published by the city’s health commission. If Xinhua’s report that 3 million tests have been conducted since April also uses figures from the health commission, it would suggest that up to 1.2 million tests were administered on May 14 alone. The health commission will publish the May 14 figures later on Friday. Recently, Wuhan has detected between several and more than a dozen asymptomatic infections every day. Some experts say the mass testing is unprecedented in scale and shows the level of concern. Others warn on potential testing errors due to the sheer size of the sampling. |

otherwise called diesel. The new ex-depot price for petrol is now N108 per litre for the month of May while ex-depot price for diesel is now N164 per litre for same month. In a memo to oil marketers and other stakeholders in the petroleum marketing business, dated May 5, 2020, titled: ‘Re: PPMC Petroleum Products Prices for May 2020,’ the PPMC reduced the ex-depot price for diesel to N164 per litre for depots in Lagos and N166 per litre for depots in Oghara, Calabar, Port Harcourt, among others. The PPMC said in the memo that the new prices would take effect from May 5, 2020. Confirming the new price change, the spokesman of NNPC, Dr. Kenny Obateru, stated that the price change for petrol from N113.28 per litre to N108 per litre is a marketing strategy to make more sales while complying with the PPPRA price template. “We reviewed the ex-depot price to enable us make more sales. For AGO, it is a deregulated product and as such is its prices are determined by market forces,” he said. The ex-depot price is the price at which the depot owners sell the commodity to retail outlets across the country. Though, the PPMC did not state the Expected Open Market Price of the commodity, which is the pump price of the price, but over the years, the difference between the ex-depot price and the pump price of petrol is usually around N9 per litre. This means that at an ex-depot price of N108 per litre, the pump price of PMS should be around N115 per litre, N10 lower than the current highest price band of N125 per litre. The current retail price of petrol is N123.50 per litre at NNPC Retail outlets and N125 per litre at private petrol stations, while diesel is sold around N200 per litre. It would be recalled that the NNPC GMD, Mallam Mele Kyari, had announced that era of fuel subsidy is gone forever recently. |
A yet-to-be-identified man has been killed after a vehicle crushed him to death on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State. The car involved in the accident is a Honda Odyssey with registration number AAA 589 FV. Public Relations Officer of Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, told journalists on Wednesday that the incident happened around 11am in Abeokuta. He explained that the victim, according to an eyewitness, was on video call while crossing the road and got knocked down by the Honda car, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. He said, “We learnt a commercial car in which the deceased was driving in was on its way to Ajah in Lagos from Kuto park in Abeokuta when the driver noticed it had ran out of fuel. “The driver had to park by the roadside to go purchase fuel while passengers in the vehicle waited for his arrival. “Since there was a road diversion along the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Interchange due to ongoing reconstruction, the deceased decided to cross to the other side of the road for safety. “However, when the driver of the Mazda car came back and had refilled the vehicle, the deceased, while crossing the road back to the car was making a video call oblivious of the fact that a vehicle was coming from the Sagamu end to Abeokuta. “The vehicle, which was a Honda Odyssey, hit him and he died on the spot.” Akinbiyi said the man’s corpse had been deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta. |
