Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday held his first meeting with campaigners calling for the release of more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram militants in the northeastern town of Chibok last year.

The militant Islamist group, whose six-year insurgency has seen thousands killed in Africa's most populous nation and top oil producer, caused an international outcry when it took the girls from secondary school dormitories in April 2014.

Buhari praised members of the Bring Back Our Girls group for their efforts to prevent the missing children being forgotten.

"Nobody in Nigeria or outside could have missed your consistency and persistence," said Buhari during the meeting at his presidential villa in the capital, Abuja. (Read Burhari Speech)

Former Minister of Finance Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala says the repeated battering of her name in the media in recent times by some politicians needs to stop.Okonjo-Iweala has been accused by Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomole of spending N2.1 billion from the Excess Crude account ECA without proper approval. The Federation Accounts Allocation Committee which comprises of all Finance commissioners from the 36 states yesterday stated that they were not informed when the former Minister approved the release of N2.1 billion from the ECA.

We thank the Finance Commissioners for their clarification on the use of the Excess Crude Account (ECA) and for acknowledging that this is not an Okonjo-Iweala issue.

The statement clearly shows that Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) is a statutory body which is chaired by the Hon. Minister of State for Finance in which all the states are represented.

Payments made were used for paying for petroleum subsidies for the Nigerian people and were approved by Mr President.

Therefore there is no question of mismanaging any resources here.

For the avoidance of doubt, at no time did Dr. Okonjo-Iweala say that FAAC approved such expenditures. What she said was that all these expenditures were discussed at FAAC meetings attended by Finance Commissioners from the 36 states.

It is therefore clear that there was no misrepresentation by Dr. Okonjo-Iweala. (Check-out here)


The question before us is: why is there such an excessive attempt to batter her name in an attempt to damage her reputation? It is clear as I said in my previous statement that the motive is malicious and very political and therefore will not succeed.

If monies were used to pay for subsidies for the Nigerian people and duly approved, why is Okonjo-Iweala’s name being battered in this way?

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has terminated the appointment of Stephen Keshi as coach of the Super Eagles.

Keshi recently signed a two-year contract with the NFF after he was relieved of his job for failing to qualify the country for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea. The pilot of a passenger plane that crashed into a river in Taiwan killing 43 people shut down the plane’s only working engine after the other failed, a new report confirmed Thursday.

TransAsia Airways Flight GE235 plunged shortly after take-off from Taipei’s Songshan airport in February with 53 passengers and five crew on board. Only 15 people survived.

Seconds before the crash the pilot said: “Wow, pulled back wrong throttle” the report from Taiwan’s Aviation Safety Council revealed, from words recorded on a black box.

That led the plane’s one working engine to fail after the other had already lost power, investigators said.

Initial reports from the black boxes found the plane’s right engine had “flamed out” about two minutes after take-off while the left engine was then shut down manually by the crew for unknown reasons.

One of the three pilots in the cockpit then pulled back the throttle of the other engine, the report said, causing it to also lose power.

Investigators said that with both engines shut off the plane began a descent and was unable to recover.

“Why the pilot did this, we don’t know. That’s the main task for our (final) analysis report,” said Thomas Wang, head of the aviation body..

Turkish monsters Fenerbahce are supposedly setting up an offer for current Arsenal number one goalkeeper, David Ospina With the imminent arrival of Chelsea goalkeeper, Petr Cech, Arsenal will likely let go of one their two top goalkeepers, Wojciech Sczcesny and David Ospina.

In anticipation, Turkish giants Fenerbahce are reportedly preparing a bid for current number one goalkeeper, David Ospina.

Ospina was brought in last summer from Nice as a cover for Sczcesny but became number one after the Polish goalkeeper was dropped.

Bugliosi was an L.A. County prosecutor in 1969 when he prosecuted Charles Manson and his notorious "family."

Operatives of Lagos State Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, have arrested a notorious car-snatching gang, which specialises in causing mild accident to rob their victims.

One of the suspect, who identified himself as Sunday Uzor, revealed that the gang’s mode of operation was to make their victim have a mild accident.

According to the 39-year-old indigene of Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, “While our victims come down to inspect the extent of damage and who the culprit is, our gang would swoop on them and snatch their vehicles.”

The other members of the gang arrested alongside Uzor are Ifeanyichukwu Chukwu, 33; Matthew Arome, 27; Ebere John, 32; and Ikechukwu Chilaka, 35.

Vanguard gathered that the police recovered a barreta pistol, one locally-made double-barrelled cut-to-size gun loaded with two live cartridges, and six other live cartridges from the suspects operating within Iyana Iba, Igando, Igbo Elerin and other areas along Lagos-Badagry expressway.

The police also recovered eight vehicles, including a Toyota Highlander, a Lexus, and a Toyota Corolla, allegedly snatched by the gang in different areas of Lagos.

It was learned that Uzor was apprehended by Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS on Saturday, in Onitsha, Anambra State, while trying to sell one of the stolen vehicles. His arrest led to the arrest of the other gang members.

Uzor told Vanguard that he was married with two children, but denied being the gang leader.

He said: “What happened was that sometime in April, we went to Igando area at about 7.30pm for an operation and we saw a lady driving a flashy car around the roundabout. So, we hit her from behind and when she came down to inquire what went wrong, our gang leader, Danjuma Sule, pointed a gun at her and she froze.

“Another gang member entered her car and drove off. We also took her away from the scene and dropped her on Obadore Bridge. The vehicle was taken to Onitsha for sale, but the police have.. (Read Here)
