ASUU Strike: Negotiations Deadlocked As FG Releases N130bn on August 20, 2013 Negotiations between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve the lingering strike by the university lecturers has again reached a dead end as both parties differed on crucial issues bordering on funding. Chairman of the Presidential Universities’ NEEDS Assessment Committee and Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, who spoke immediately after about four hours of deliberations between the union and the government team at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), said negotiations would continue. He said progress was made in the area of addressing the infrastructural deficit in the universities with the release of N100 billion, which would be distributed next month. “The federal government has been able to harness about N100 billion, which Mr. President has agreed. And that will begin the project and starting from the first week of September in virtually all the universities. The process of achieving that is ongoing at the centre and due process for it at various universities,” Suswam said. “The infrastructure deficit like hostels, laboratories and libraries will be addressed. Some will be renovated while others will be brand new. Every university will be affected and each of the hostels will accommodate 1,200 students. Despite the efforts announced by the FG, ASUU has refused to shift ground on the two outstanding issues of infrastructure funding and pending arrears. ASUU President, Nasir Isa Fagge, told journalists after the meeting that they would meet with their National Executive Council (NEC) to decide the appropriate response to the federal government. That said, Fagge made it clear that ASUU’s position had not shifted from the 2009 agreement. “The union is talking about the implementation of 2009 agreement and not renegotiation.” “If you remember, the objective of going on strike is to get government to implement the 2009 ASUU and federal government agreement particularly to implement the provisions of the memorandum of understanding we reached with the government in 2012. “I want to say that at today’s meeting, we looked at all the issues and it is clear to us that the Suswam Committee that is working on the funding requirement for revitalising the university system particularly on the implementation of the NEEDS assessment report… its clear to us that we have not really gone far in that aspect.” “So, on the basis of that, we will also go back and inform our principals on the development. I think it is important to clarify that at this point that we are not making a demand, there was an agreement with government, and even that aspect that government is talking about, the entitlement of earned staff of then university, that includes the technical staff, members of the senior staff association and members of the non academic staff. “So, I think at this point, what the union is talking about is the implementation of 2009 agreement not the renegotiation of the agreement. “Well, we will wait to hear from government after the consultation with the councils. Whatever they place on the table, we will look at it. But for now, we will also go back and report to our principals,” Fagge stated. Also speaking after the meeting, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, said all the issues had been resolved except the unpaid allowances. Anyim said the federal government had agreed to release the sum of N30 billion in that regard, which must be paid according to the verifiable claims by each university councils, adding that the sum of N92 billion being demanded by ASUU could not be met as the claims upon, which fund were to be released could be faulty using the initial criteria being proposed by the academic union. He said they had shifted the responsibility of settling the pending arrears to the university councils, who will be supported with the N30 billion. “ASUU is asking for the N92 billion and we felt that the way the whole process is being done, there would be discrepancies and we want things to be done according to due process. “We know that it is the responsibility of the university councils to take care of the issue of unclaimed allowances. So the actual figures will be verified by the council and we will be supporting them with N30 billion,” he said. Also speaking on the funding of the universities’ infrastructure, Anyim said federal government would start with the sum of N100 billion. He said the federal government would release funds in a progressive manner over a period of three years to meet up with the sum of N400 billion being demanded by ASUU. |
Breaking: ASUU strike continues as FG, lecturers meeting deadlocked!! The Monday meeting between striking university lecturers and the federal government ended without a resolution of the crisis. The meeting, which held at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was attended by the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Minister of Labour, Emeka Nwogwu; Minister of Education, Rukayyatu Rufai; and the Benue State Governor and head of the government's delegation, Gabriel Suswam. The lecturers' union, ASUU, was led by the President of the union, Nasiru Fagge. The meeting lasted for over four hours (from 3:p.m. to about 7:15p.m). More details later... |
ASUU strike: Jonathan approves N400bn lifeline – SSANU The end to the present strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be in sight as President Goodluck Jonathan has approved N400 billion for the infrastructural development of Nigerian universities. The document to this effect is expected to be made available today at the meeting of the presidential committee on implementation of the NEEDS assessment in the universities with the leaders of the four university-based unions – the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The President of SSANU, Samson Ugwoke, made the revelation while addressing his union members at the SSANU National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the weekend at the University of Abuja. Ugwoke, briefing the SSANU members on the activities of the NEEDS assesment implementation committee, led by Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam. He noted that the fund was different from the N100 billion Governor Suswam had raised from donor agencies and big companies to tackle the problems of Nigerian universities in 2013. The labour leader said: “Let me give you a tip on what the NEEDS assessment committee is doing. The president has approved that within the next four years; N400 billion would be expended in infrastructural development of Nigerian universities, to transform the universities to international standard. “N100 billion has already been raised by Suswam committee out of which 61 universities have been pencilled down, as contained in the NEEDS assessement committee. The N100 billion is expected to address needs of the universities in the areas which include re- furbishing and renovation of lecture theatres and lecture halls, re-furbishing and renovation of laboratories/libraries and the renovation of hostels. “The second category is building of new hostels of international standard, self-contained rooms, the latest model in the world. That is the standard to be built in every university, and also the state-of-the- art laboratories as well as classrooms, lecture theatres and the halls.” Ugwoke pointed out that the money had been shared and out of the N100 billion, N96 billion had been sent to universities. He added: “The committee is meeting again on Monday, and by Monday (today), the document will be out. This time around, it is not only by giving university money, but it will be monitored to ensure that the money is used to transform the universities, to bail universities out of the present situation and developed to an international recognized university standard.” http://[/quote] |

nyles:wonderful translation i most say |
nyles: Yes it is possible. Especially when the school administration and ASUU are not on the same page. Sometimes, after ASUU has called off the strike, some schools admin usually make peace with ASUU to accept the admission list so in some cases, it is possible. The school admistration just needs to be wise about how they handle their ASUU branch, if not, then there is usually a disruption in the academic calendar. IT HAPPENED in Unilorin in 2001 and i think UDUSOK sometime ago too.Yes, UDUSOK. Let's see what unfolds.hmm, ok dat wil b ok, i just pray it al work in our favour |

sakaguchi: @Nyles and @Wittywizard I pray both of you school/schooled in Uniabuja, because that would torpedo a lot of impression I have formed while following this thread ever since the OP opened it. The write-ups and grammar I have seen here are just terrible, the only time you get to see articulate grammar that makes sense on this thread is when a certain dude Mrpresido and Richiez (I guess) COPY AND PASTE newspaper publication (apart from the copy and paste, even these duo are nothing commendable), every other thing here are eyesores and it is betoken of the fact that Uniabuja is gliding down the ramp to hit rock-bottom when other schools are soaring. Our school can no longer lure bright minds to it, I must say that the applicants here do not give me any reason to cheer and this malignant problem plaguing uniabuja is not the fault of the Government, why is it that the best of best of applicants would rather fill in Unilag, OAU, UI, UNN, Unilorin and leave uniabuja with the least of applicants in all federal universities, that means that our lecturers are also to be blamed in the collapse of education structure here and nationwide, afterall, no Nigerian University is among the elite institutions in Africa, Government and ASUU together with its affiliates (NASU, SSANU) are to be blamed.hmm, ur writ up is highly commendably bt dont u tink u ar a bit hard on us d aspirant? Wel on ur agrument i agree wit u in totality, d ASUU lecturers by now shuld hav come up wit somtin 2 engage d gov wit rather dan strike, if country lik ghana spend up 2 30% or more of dere total budget on education i c no reason y nigeria shuld b spendin just 8 or 9% at most of it budget. Nt withstandin dat fact d management of our university also hav dere own side of d blame dere complain of fundni, bt hw ar dere managin d little fund at dere disposal, uniabuja 4 examply til date can nt acount 4 millions if nt billion of naira, my guy d problem is in al sector corruption is d problem we must fight |
OJABS_: Hello guys.. it's been a whileguy wht up? D result of d test wa nt wht i wa expectin sha, i wa expectin 80% bt guy i wa suprise 2 c 40%, i also hav 193 in my jamb goin 4 po sci, wht do u tink about my chance 4 admision? |
Wittywizard: mr Goddon. I want to use dis medium to shawn u, pls no1 s a kid here... If UniAbuja didn't give u admission, dont come here & start being too aggressive on any1, its nobody fault & moreova, d list is not fully out... Am highly battered wit ur unusuall comment nowadays... Pls, u just av to calm down in life...thank u.i dont realy get u, did i sa somtin? Wel In my case God as already taken charge of it, God is presently fightin 4 my admision bt nt in uniabuja bt in jos, i beliv dat at d end victory shal n wil b ours |
Joeprince2nd: what looks like punishment for the poor faculty staff? If u are 2 convert that average % into jamb standard it will be 55.8*4= 223.2, but if d % is approximated to 56 it will be 224.na wa na God hand i da o, if na so den me dat hav 193 in jamb n 40% wil be 44.97% which if aproxmated wil b 45 dat is 180, na wa God abeg make u help me o |
