Health remains one of the most important pillars for global development, and the active participation of young people is proving to be a game-changer. On International Youth Day, the Debriche Health Development Centre (DHDCNigeria) reaffirmed its belief that youth involvement is central to achieving lasting improvements in public health and progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through a statement shared on its platforms, DHDC called on young people across Nigeria to step forward, lead initiatives, and become the change-makers their communities need. “We refuse to wait for the future! We choose to lead NOW, with courage and clarity. As young leaders, we are disruptors of complacency, architects of solutions, and champions of equity. At DHDC, we are proof that when youth are given the tools, trust, and a seat at the table, we don’t just participate but we lead transformation,” said Mrs. Deborah Ogwuche Ikeh, Executive Director of DHDC. Youth Leadership Driving Impact DHDC has strategically positioned itself as a key driver of youth-led innovation in public health and community mobilisation. With support from Stop TB Partnership Geneva through the Challenge Facility for Civil Society, the organisation spearheaded the pilot and implementation of OneImpact in Nigeria, Nigeria’s first digital community-led monitoring platform for TB, and launched the groundbreaking Gen-Z Against TB campaign, both in collaboration with the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme of the Federal Ministry of Health. These initiatives have mobilised hundreds of young volunteers and community focal points nationwide to educate communities, combat stigma, and advocate for policy changes that strengthen healthcare systems. Connecting Youth Voices to Global Health Leaders To mark International Youth Day, DHDC volunteers joined young leaders worldwide for the International Youth Day Chat with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, hosted by the WHO Youth Council. Discussions centred on the WHO Youth Council Declaration on Creating Healthier Societies, with priorities including: 1. Promoting health education and literacy 2. Ensuring accessible and sustainable healthcare 3. Transforming and elevating youth leadership 4. Planetary health Dr. Tedros applauded youth engagement, stating: “Youth are the heartbeat of change. With innovation, solidarity, and bold action, they can build a world where health equity and hope reaches everyone and no one is left behind.” A Call to Action DHDC’s work demonstrates that meaningful youth participation is not just symbolic but is strategic, impactful, and essential for achieving health equity. The organisation invites young people across Nigeria to join its volunteer network and take part in shaping healthier, stronger communities.

CSOs Call on President Tinubu to Inaugurate Monitoring Team for Nigeria-China Development Deal A group of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to officially appoint them as monitoring partners for the agreement signed between Nigeria and China. This agreement focuses on boosting tourism and other important sectors in Nigeria. The group, which includes China Tourism Promoters, the Tourism Volunteers Network, RAPNEC, the Coalition of Road Safety NGOs of Nigeria, and Civil Society Organizations for Good Governance, wants to make sure the projects are done transparently and help the country grow. At a press conference led by Ambassador Phil Roberts, the group shared their commitment to ensuring that Nigeria benefits fully from the deal with China. Roberts explained that the agreements will help develop tourism as well as other important areas like transportation and energy. Roberts thanked the Chinese government for their continued support to Nigeria and Africa, especially through initiatives like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). He said these partnerships are essential for building roads, railways, and other infrastructure that will help Nigeria, particularly in the tourism sector. “We sincerely thank the Chinese government for their commitment to Nigeria’s development,” Roberts said. “These agreements will ensure the development of roads, railways, energy, and digital infrastructure that will unlock the potential of millions of Nigerians.” Roberts also praised President Tinubu for working hard to secure these agreements with China. He said the partnerships will help Nigeria grow and improve, especially in tourism. The CSOs asked the President to officially appoint them as monitors to ensure the agreements are followed through. “We commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold leadership in securing these partnerships. Under his direction, Nigeria is entering a new era of growth and development,” Roberts said. “As a team, we will continue working with the Chinese government to ensure these relationships remain strong.” The group emphasized the need for accountability in the projects linked to the agreement. According to Roberts, development must be transparent to be effective. He urged President Tinubu to make their group the official monitors to ensure the projects in the agreement are carried out properly. “Development without accountability is not real development,” Roberts said. “It is our job to ensure the dreams of a better Nigeria, supported by this partnership with China, come true.”

The Association of Youths of Nigeria Against Corruption (AYONAC) has accused Muhammed Bello Koko, the current Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), of multiple corrupt activities. The group, dissatisfied with what they describe as political cover-ups, has announced plans for a 1 million-man march to protest corruption and demand accountability. AYONAC, in a public statement published on their official Instagram page, highlighted their intention to write to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding the alleged political shielding of Bello Koko. The Senate Committee on Public Accounts is currently investigating Koko for grand corruption, despite his indictment. The youth group calls for a thorough investigation and prosecution, reflecting the growing frustration among Nigerian youths over the pervasive corruption in the country. Amb. Phil Roberts, the National Coordinator of AYONAC, addressed the media in Abuja, expressing deep concerns over the state of governance and corruption in Nigeria. He emphasized that the youth have remained silent for too long and that the escalating hunger and suffering in the country have reached unbearable levels. Roberts mentioned that their planned 1 million-man march against corruption had brought the case of Muhammed Bello Koko to the forefront, making it a focal point for their protest. Roberts referred to several high-profile publications exposing Koko’s alleged corrupt activities. On October 3, 2021, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) released over 11 million leaked documents, revealing the involvement of world politicians and business leaders in offshore activities. Among these revelations was Koko’s alleged connection to offshore companies and properties, detailed in a Premium Times investigation titled “Inside the Secret Offshore Companies, London Properties of NPA Chief, Bello-Koko.” The report accused Koko of using two shell companies in tax havens to invest anonymously in the UK property market, potentially violating Nigeria’s public service code of conduct laws. Further allegations emerged on November 27, 2022, when Sahara Reporters published an investigative report by the EFCC. The report implicated Koko in an N829 million fraud, involving kickbacks and money laundering activities. The EFCC’s investigation revealed that Koko received over N800 million from NPA contractors through illicit means. AYONAC’s statement also highlighted additional accusations against Koko, including fraud, extortion, tax evasion, forgery, and money laundering. Despite these serious allegations, the Nigerian government has been criticized for failing to hold Koko accountable. A UK-based fraud and corruption investigation team further implicated Koko in numerous criminal activities, prompting them to write to the UK Home Office seeking the confiscation of his allegedly ill-gotten properties. The youth group criticized the Nigerian government for its perceived inability to act decisively against corruption. They alleged that powerful individuals are providing political cover for Koko in exchange for lucrative contracts from the NPA. The planned 1 million man march by AYONAC is a significant step in their fight against corruption. It aims to draw national and international attention to the endemic corruption in Nigeria and demand that the government takes concrete actions to hold corrupt officials accountable. The group hopes that their efforts will galvanize other citizens and stakeholders to join the fight against corruption and restore integrity to public service in Nigeria.
