PoliticsRe: Why FG Must End Petrol Subsidy Now — Dangote by Godszilla: 12:27pm On Sep 24, 2024
Bravo I think i have learnt a thing or two from both of you. I essence we are searching for the Truth in this dark world.

However, like you use mainly in your quote "I", I also believe reincarnation is not really a bad thing but an act of mercy from God in His infinite Love for us.

Obviously, even I have come to the simple conclusion that Nigeria is actually Hell, Nigeria is Hell like the guy you quoted submitted. However, the whole world is under this dark energy that Japa is not escaping Nigeria Hell per say.

You also mention like mind and trait which is true and correct but the physical that is the body black or white is just superficial its the spirit that is inside that body that matter.

Anyway there is a lot to unpack here.

Almunjid:
I used to believe that if reincarnation were true, Africans were individuals who had led bad lives in the past and were reborn in Africa as a form of punishment. According to this belief, those who lived virtuously would eventually be reincarnated in better continents and countries. However, I no longer adhere to this opinion, as it oversimplifies the complex realities of global poverty, wealth distribution, and human experience. Although you seem not to be particularly religious, but your opinion and assertions were influenced by "religion". The concept of reincarnation is taught by some Eastern religions like Hinduism. grin

Moreover, poverty, suffering, and hardship are not exclusive to Africa. They exist in varying degrees across the globe, including in countries within Asia and America. Therefore, it is incorrect to categorize an entire continent as "Hell" or a "prison" based solely on the challenges faced by some of its inhabitants. Additionally, affluent and successful individuals reside in Africa, just as they do in other parts of the world. Reincarnation, as an explanation for human experiences, does not resonate with my beliefs. I adhere to the Islamic perspective, which suggests that each individual faces judgment after death (Qur'an 3:185).

The notion of spirits or jinns moving from a possessed deceased individual to another could potentially explain claims of past life experiences. The Qur'an states, "Whoever is diverted from the remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion" (Qur'an 43:36). When such a person possessed by such spirits dies, the spirit may transfer to another body (of a newborn baby). In cases where the child is spiritually vulnerable or becomes possessed by the spirit, the spirit can assume control, even recounting memories of past lives through them. However, this should not be confused with reincarnation, as mentioned in Hebrews 9:27-28, where it is stated that humans are appointed to die once, followed by judgment.

I believe that God and nature have not only created humans but have also categorized them based on various attributes, including physical traits and behavioral tendencies. This categorization can be better understood through the concept of "ability grouping" used in educational settings, where individuals are placed in groups according to their skills or capabilities. In this context, God and nature also grouped us according to our behavior, mentality, and attitudes, using skin color as a basis ranging from black, brown, yellow and white. Those with black skin, considered the least privileged, often exhibit higher levels of greed and selfishness and are primarily native to Africa. They are followed by brown-skinned individuals in many parts of Asia, while the higher in the rank are white-skinned individuals, who tend to be less greedy and selfish and demonstrate self-love and organization, are mostly found in Europe. This classification may explain why Africa experiences fewer natural disasters compared to other continents. Each category has its unique experiences, serving as distinct learning opportunities for growth and understanding.

Consequently, the difficulties and natural disasters faced by humanity across the globe often result from human actions, as mentioned in the Qur'an (30:41). These circumstances will persist until we initiate change within ourselves. As Allah says, "Verily, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves" (Quran 13:11). Only by making such changes can we demonstrate that we have learned from our experiences. However, if we revert to our old, sinful ways, the same calamities and punishments associated with them will reemerge (Qur'an 17:8 ).

Finally, Nigeria's problems will not get better until we change our thoughts, mentality and behaviors. Moving to other countries (Japa) is not the answer, because Nigerians can bring their bad habits and corruption with them to whenever to go. This can create problems in those countries too. Some places like Dubai have tried to fix this by making strict laws to keep Nigerians out of their country. Furthermore, voting acclaimed better and more qualified leaders might not help either because leaders are chosen from among the followers, and if the followers themselves are corrupt and dishonest, the leaders will be as well. Our leaders mirror the people we are. Ultimately, change must begin with each individual.

Peace!

Few persons have asked that the government should fix the corruption within the subsidy program. But we have hordes begging that the government should transfer the burden to them - Reality bites

Til this day no "expert" in government has put out a verifiable stat on volume of fuel consumption, no actual breakdown of how they come about the subsidy added. No account on why our border is porous and the same person in charge of the duty is complaining, the list goes on.

They say mismanagement, corruption n accountability is not the problem but subsidy is. They say fuel is too cheap we cant afford subsidy for the people but we can afford to subsidies thieves government. Sad n tragic

The roads are empty, most cars basically are still queuing for 900 fuel about 2 weeks after Dangote our saviour gave his word that it would be resolved in 48 hour.

PoliticsNigeria’s Poverty Rate Will Surpass W’bank 104 Million Estimate Soon – Economist by Godszilla(op): 5:52am On Sep 07, 2024
Following the recent increase in the pump price of petrol and the prevailing food supply challenges gripping the country, economists have warned that the number of Nigerians below the poverty line may soon exceed the 104 million shocked projected by the World Bank in 2023.

The global bank had said the poverty rate in the country increased to 46 per cent in 2023 representing 104 million poor Nigerians.

Disclosing this in its Nigeria development update, titled, ‘Turning the Corner: From Reforms & Renewed Hope, to Results’, released in December last year, the World Bank said Nigeria’s poverty rate had risen from 40 per cent in 2018 to 46 per cent, as the number of poor people increased from 79 million to 104 million.

“Sluggish growth and rising inflation have increased poverty from 40 per cent in 2018 to 46 per cent in 2023, pushing an additional 24 million people below the national poverty line,” the World Bank said.

The report said the number of poor people in urban areas — more exposed to inflation — increased from 13 million to 20 million, while the number of poor people in rural areas rose to 84 million from 67 million within the same period.

The World Bank had predicted that the increase in poverty rate would be undone by the economic reforms shocked of President Bola Tinubu from the beginning of 2024 till 2026.

But speaking with Saturday PUNCH on Thursday, some economists said the policies and policy decisions of the current administration with the latest being the fuel price increase would definitely increase cool the number of poor Nigerians beyond the World Bank estimates because the salaries of most people had remained stagnated despite the surging inflationary trend.

A professor of Development Economics, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Taiwo Owoeye, said with the way the fuel price hike had jerked up transportation costs, prices of basic commodities of the poor people would worsen the inflationary pressures. huh

He said that with a 45 per cent hike, the new fuel price would have ripple effects on every aspect of the economy.

According to him, there has not been an onward increase in the salaries of workers, because while most states have yet to implement the N70,000 minimum wage, more Nigerians may find themselves in poverty very soon.

“Definitely, it will push more Nigerians into poverty. It is a 45 per cent increase in the price of fuel and that will affect other aspects of the economy. So, it will definitely put a lot of people below the poverty line,” he said.

Also in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, an agricultural economist from the Centre for Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Tobi Awolope, said the latest fuel price hike would worsen the misery already afflicting the poor people in the aspect of food crisis. lipsrsealed

When asked whether the recent fuel price hike and other related factors will jerk up the number of poor Nigerians to over 100 million, she said, “It’s very possible. Aside from the fuel price increase, there has been an irregular pattern of rainfall and climate change does have a long-term effect.”

PoliticsRe: Benin Republic, Niger Enjoy Smuggled Fuel As Nigerians Keep Vigil For Petrol by Godszilla: 8:22am On Aug 24, 2024
nairalanda1:
cheesy

It is simple.

1. Fuel costs below N1000 here

2. Fuel costs above N1000 over there. Even in NIger, with the recent reduction, fuel costs N1400 per liter

3. Naturally, smuggling would result. And let's be honest, it is not only big people doing it, even the small ordinary Nigerian would carry a 50 liter jerrycan of fuel across the border, and sell it, and come back with a big enough profit to bribe customs, and still have enough left over.

4. We don't have fuel, because government is struggling to pay the subsidy on fuel. Right now we owe fuel exporters lots of money, we are struggling to even pay the NNPC shortfall, and NNPC is now raiding the dividends to pay off its own shortfall.

5. And yet, Nigerians keep asking for cheap fuel

It is our desire to have N40 fuel that is causing this, people. And it is high time we woke up and realized fuel cannot be cheap, and totally removed subsidy.

Yet, anyone suggesting this now is apparently agbado, even if they have never voted for tinubu or never liked the man (I have not liked tinubu since 2005, when Gani first raised the questions about his certificate then)....

But it is obvious subsidy, even at tinubu level is not sustainable.

The only way to stop smuggling is to TOTALLY REMOVE SUBSIDES. Yes, fuel would cost N1500 per liter, and yes, Agbado people brought hardship to NIgeria, and yes NIgeria needs to divide, and bla bla bla

But you cannot sell at a loss and not expect issues.

And if you think NIgeria is the only country with this issue....

1. LIbya has a severe smuggling problem, to the point that smuggliers are being bombed by the LIbyan air force

2. Saudi has a smuggling problem with Yemen, which they are finding hard to fight

3. Iran has issues on the border with Pakistan. Iranian fuel is being smuggled into Pakistan well well. Subaisy

4. Venezuela has a massive smuggling problem. Same thing happening here. They lost 18 bn dollars to smuggling one year.

See the benefits of subsidy

Yet somehow, we want something that costs over N1000 to make to be sold at N200 or less because 'poverty'

We better wake up folks.
It's really infuriating seeing your comment on every subsidy thread. The sad part is you seem to appear intelligent and all but I don't understand the crux of what you are or keep championing.

Here is a quote from a journalist in US

"The quickest way to drive down interest rates is to fix the economy. The quickest way to fix the economy is to drive down inflation. The quickest way to drive down inflation is to create a domestic energy bonanza. Harris won’t do that. Former President Donald Trump did do that in his first term and is promising to do it again. Energy affects the price of everything. If energy costs are low, the price of everything decreases because it becomes cheaper to manufacture, ship, and store everything."

It's just insane what you keep defending n it's sickening.

Like someone rightly said on one of the thread you obviously get a hard on anytime you see subsidy topics
PoliticsRe: Kenneth Okonkwo Slams Tinubu For Acquiring Presidential Jet Amid Hardship by Godszilla: 11:41am On Aug 20, 2024
If your children and family are suffering from hunger and malnutrition, the most basic thing you should provide for them. we are not talking about security here - food!!!. Is it ok (morally at the least) for you to go out and purchase a Mercede G-wagon?

emkz:
While it seems criticisms of the president are apt, certain facts must be cleared.

Presidential transportation worldwide is a serious security matter. In our case, air transport of the president is handled by the Nigerian Airforce. If the airforce says a jet is unfit to fly the president because it might have stayed in service longer than specified, hence a potential aviation threat, it is only fair that we listen to them. We do not need to like them.

Those suggesting that the president must fly commercial or use his personal vehicles (like Deji Adeyanju) are not aware of the potential security threats. A Nigerian head of state was assassinated in broad daylight in his official car, while another one was murdered for not taking their security serious.

The aircraft here does not belong to Tinubu. It belongs to the Federal Government. Once Tinubu leaves power, he won't take the jet with him. So those accusing Tinubu of purchasing a private jet for himself are being ludicrous.

Yesterday, Charly Boy lied that the president's official car, Cardilac Escalade is worth almost 1 billion naira. A simple internet search showed that the vehicle is about 250 million naira. Still expensive, why did Charly Boy have to lie? When Buhari exited power, he didn't leave with the Maybach. The vehicle was not his. The Cardilac does not belong to Tinubu. DSS handles his ground transportation. Why not question DSS for proposing that vehicle?

And for those who are just realizing, the Cardilac Escalade SUV had been in use since last year and sighted several times in the convoy, how come they are just seeing it? The vice president is driven in one of such vehicles. How come they have not seen it?

Anyway, Kenneth Okonkwo says people are dying of hunger and there is no fuel or electricity. It is not Tinubu's job to cultivate arable land nationwide. It is not Tinubu's job to provide buses to transport people within states. These are things state governors can easily undertake on their own, and even local governments. We have seen the Niger State governor buy such buses. Once the burden of transportation is removed, the issue of fuel price would not bother so many.

The fact is that the president is being blamed for policies, but all presidential candidates agreed that subsidy on petrol needed to be removed. Even the messianic pontiff said he'd remove it on day 1. Suddenly, Tinubu is being condemned for taking the decision to save us from economic doom. It didn't make sense that we were borrowing to pay subsidies. Also, the removal of the parallel trade of fx was to tackle the fx fraud that drained our resources.

This meant that increased allocation could be used for developmental purposes in the states. What do the state governors do instead? We find them doing Hajj subsidies and Ramadan feeding, purchasing vehicles for traditional rulers, buying wheelbarrows to turn their unemployed youth to mai-barrow in the markets, and stacking funds for elections they are not sure of living to partake in.

Dear governors, learn one basic thing: from what happened in Kano during the August riots, when people take to the streets, they'd target governors first and they can only move up the ladder once they have brought you down.

You still have time to work for your people and address the basic problems of food security and transportation within your state. We shall criticize the president for the things we must criticize him on.

East Asia and the Pacific region accounted for nearly half of the global total subsidy. China was the biggest subsidiser of fossil fuels, followed by the US, Russia, the European Union and India.

https://www.ft.com/content/fa607c72-7810-4ed5-98a3-d27d004c15bd

Max24:
I appreciate your response and value it. I like people who argue issues intellectually not abuse because we all learn from it . The bottom line is making Nigeria better. Now ther is an important aspect of subsidy that nobody has addressed here. Part of the reason subsidy has to go is that in effect we are not just subsidizing ourselves. We are subsidizing all our West African neighbors or more. Are we Father Christmas? Can we sustain that? All those other countries are our fuel cheaply and developing over us since they are smaller and more manageable. We can't be penny wise and pounds foolish. As I speak to you, tell me any African country selling fuel at lower price than us - Ghana, SA, Egypt, Kenya, Coteviire. The effect is that we are attracting ants to ourselves for their own purpose while we think they love us. We will cry the day the fuel dries up and we have not developed alternatives. We need to be more businesslike in the way we manage our main resource. We should not waste it simply because we produce it. Like I said if we do, we will cry the day it finishes. Let our oil be like gold, let's not use it to play with anybody including our neighboring brothers
PoliticsRe: Tinubu’s Reforms: Nightmarish Cases From Other Countries - Farooq Kperogi by Godszilla: 2:09pm On Aug 17, 2024
Dude you are blessed.

DeepSight:
My dear, look let me not waste time going through the philosophy of the matter - which I can see we will disagree on based on your posts with other people up there. I will only say that the IMF/ Bretton Woods prescriptions have been around for decades and have never worked in a single third world country. They have rather consistently destroyed lives and economies everywhere they have been implemented - so much so that it is obvious that the destruction of lives and the pauperization of populations is actually what those policies were deliberately designed for and history proves this.

As I said, let me not waste your time with arguing the philosophy of it - let me just go to the practicality. Let us assume you needed to remove subsidies, fine. No where in the world would you remove them in one fell swoop the way it was done in this country last year. That is unheard of. The spike in PMS price was over 200 per cent - and believe you me, I have researched this matter - there had never been such an increase in the price of PMS in a single day in any country in the world. Other countries which removed subsidies did so gradually over time in order to reduce the shock to the system. One does not have to be an economist to know that the ripple effects on the prices of other commodities will lead to hyper-inflation which is what has obviously happened. And there is no way that is good for the economy. If it must have been done, it should have been done in phases. Carefully managed phases.

Now as if that was not bad enough, you then proceeded to float the naira immediately at the same time. This was the biggest disaster of all. You have to understand a number of things. First is that an import dependent economy cannot afford to float or devalue its currency, That is a prescription for suicide. Because if you import everything you use, as we do, then you are spending USD all the time and if you devalue your currency then you will require more and more of your currency to procure less and less USD and that will finish you off in a vicious cycle - because the more USD you chase the more your currency will fall.

But it was not just this obvious principle that made it a disaster - what made it the greatest disaster is the fact that you are importing the said PMS you have removed subsidies from. You are paying USD for the PMS, and thus it stands to reason that once your currency falls, you will pay even more USD for that PMS and this is why the landing cost of PMS has become so high, that it is now obvious that the government is in fact still paying some subsidy to retain the price at circa N600 - because based on the exchange rate it should be over N1, 000.

Therefore by flloating the naira at the same time as removing subsidy, the FG actually defeated the purpose of subsidy removal.

The net result has been the death, destruction and unspeakable hardship which has followed. The truth is that these policies are ill thought out and they have never succeded in any third world country where they have been prescribed, and they frankly were not intended to.

Now, to adderss your question "what have we acheived through fuel subsidy since indpendence" - the answer is very simple and it is staring you in the face. Sometimes you dont know what you have until you lose it. The safety net that the economy had from this kind of devastation and hardship is what we acheived. Just compare the ecomony of a mere one and a half years ago to what obtains today and you will see the difference. That is what it is.

No economy can grow when you deflate it and take away the purchsing power of the people. Everywhere economies have grown, there has been an injection, and not a deflation. The devaluation of the naira accompanied with hyper inflation has made every Nigerian vastly poorer. And there is nothing positive about a pauperized population - let no one deceive you - there is no long term gain in such. It will only ever deliver death and hardship.

Finally please stop comparing the removal of subsidies in places like the UK with what has happened here. Not only are the subsidies not the same and the products being subsidized not the same, the entire picture is different. This is aside from the fact that no one was insane enough to remove 100 percent of a critical subsidy in a single day. Anyone who does that to his country is bent on destroying it.

CrimePhiladelphia Man Pleads Guilty To Stabbing Neighbor To Death Over Snoring by Godszilla(op): 8:49pm On Aug 13, 2024
A man from suburban Philadelphia stabbed his neighbor to death after the killer’s loud snoring led the pair to argue violently, according to authorities.

Christopher Casey, 56, was recently handed a relatively short prison sentence after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the 14 January death of 62-year-old Robert Wallace. Casey also pleaded guilty to possessing an instrument of crime to close the book on a case with a motive that has not been too commonly
seen in the US justice system.

The two men lived next to each other, sharing a common wall in a duplex home in Upper Morland, Pennsylvania. Wallace ultimately became so annoyed at how loudly and often Casey would snore that he pushed in his neighbor’s first-floor window and threatened to kill him, local prosecutors had previously said in a statement.

Citing police records, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Wallace eventually calmed down and offered to pay for a surgery that would correct Casey’s snoring.

But Casey allegedly did not believe Wallace’s offer of assistance was genuine. He stabbed Wallace several times in the chest with a large, military-style knife before calling police to the home.

Officers arrived to find Wallace on the ground about 50ft away from the duplex. First responders brought him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, Casey was also taken to a hospital to be treated for a stab wound to his right thigh that he inflicted on himself.

Authorities subsequently charged him with third-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter and possessing an instrument of crime, jailing him in lieu of $1m bail.

Casey then appeared before Pennsylvania state court judge Risa Vetri Ferman on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to reduced charges indicating that he had essentially killed Wallace through unintentional recklessness. In exchange, he accepted a sentence of between 11 and a half and 23 months in prison.
shocked
The Inquirer reported that the plea deal allowed for Casey to be free after eight and a half months in custody, of which he has one huh more to serve before being released to spend three years on probation.

According to the Inquirer, Wallace’s family told Ferman that the slain man had long been unable to sleep due to Casey’s excessive snoring. That had caused so much fatigue in Wallace that it negatively affected his ability to work as well as his personal life, they maintained.

Casey apologized to Wallace’s family, calling the fatal confrontation between him and his neighbor “unfortunate”, the outlet reported

Nonetheless, Casey’s attorney, James Lyons, said Wallace had repeatedly threatened his client’s life prior to the fatal stabbing. The Philadelphia Inquirer cited police records which showed officers had responded to multiple calls for disputes between Wallace and Casey over the latter’s snoring.

Lyons told the newspaper that Casey’s autism “makes it difficult to navigate confrontation” for him.

“He was terrified of this guy,” Lyons reportedly said, “and he believed that he had no option.”

SportsAttacks Over Gender Make Gold Sweeter - Khelif by Godszilla(op): 7:15am On Aug 10, 2024
Imane Khelif said "attacks" over her gender eligibility gave her victory a "special taste" after she won Olympic women's boxing gold a year after being disqualified from the World Championships.

The Algerian was banned and reported to have failed gender eligibility tests but, having been allowed to compete in Paris, beat Chinese world champion Yang Liu by unanimous decision over five rounds to win welterweight gold.

"I am fully qualified to take part in this competition," said 25-year-old Khelif. "I am a woman like any other woman.

"I was born a woman. I have lived as a woman. I competed as a woman - there is no doubt about that."

Khelif said she had been a victim of "bullying" and that the International Boxing Association (IBA) "hate me and I really don’t know why".

In the arena she was roared to the ring by swathes of Algeria supporters, who waved their green, white and red flags.

Khelif dominated the fight and was showboating at the final bell, dancing while knowing victory was hers, before her and Yang shared a warm embrace.

When the result was confirmed, Yang raised Khelif's arm in the air - a contrast to the scenes after Khelif's opening fight against Italy's Angela Carini - and Khelif was then carried around a jubilant arena on the shoulders of her coach

Lin Yu-ting, who was also banned last year under the same ruling, will fight Poland's Julia Szeremeta in the featherweight final on Saturday.

Khelif had tears in her ears and was applauded by Lin and bronze medallists Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei and Thailan's Janjaem Suwannapheng as the Algerian national was played.

How did we get here?

Carini abandoned the first-round bout with Khelif after 46 seconds, saying she had to "preserve" her life.

Khelif, whose previous best result was a world silver in 2022, followed that bout with convincing, unanimous-decision victories to reach the final.

This was expected to be a tougher bout - Yang represented a step up in class - but it proved to be another clear victory.

Yang was due to face Khelif in the final of last year's World Championship - a title Wang went on to win - but Khelif was disqualified by the IBA before they met.

The IBA said Khelif and Lin "failed to meet the eligibility criteria for participating in the women's competition, as set and laid out in the IBA regulations".

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), which runs the boxing events at the Olympics, allowed them to compete, raised doubts about the tests and strongly criticised the IBA, insisting Khelif and Lin were "born and raised as women".

President Thomas Bach said earlier on Friday that the IOC "does not like the uncertainty" but suggested there is not a "scientifically solid system" to "identify men and women".

'Stop bullying'

Khelif said she has been criticised by "enemies of success".

"That also gives my success a special taste because of these attacks," she said.

A chaotic news conference held by the IBA last week did little to clear the confusion around Khelif and Lin's bans.

Chief executive Chris Roberts said the pair had "chromosome tests", while president Umar Kremlev appeared to suggest the tests determined the fighters' testosterone levels.

The BBC has been unable to determine what the eligibility tests consisted of.

The Russian-led IBA was stripped of its status as amateur boxing's governing body by the IOC in 2019 because of fears over its governance and regulation.

"They know me very well," Khelif said. "They know what I am capable, how I have developed over the years, but now they are not recognised any more.

"They hate me and I really don’t know why."

Khelif said she had sent a "single message" with her gold - that her "dignity and honour is above everything else".

"My message to the whole world is that they should to commit to Olympic principles and they should avoid bullying," she said.

"This is a message of the Olympic values.

"I hope people will stop bullying and commit to the Olympic charter. We are in the Olympic to perform as athletes. I hope we will not see similar attacks in the future."

What else has been said?

Many of Khelif and Lin's opponents and their coaching teams have been unhappy with their involvement, indicating a level of discontent behind the scenes.

Immediately after her loss to Khelif, Carini said it "was not right", although she later apologised for how she handled the moments after the fight. Her coach said he had advised her not to fight, saying people had told her not to "fight a man".

Before Khelif's second-round fight, opponent Anna Luca Hamori from Hungary said "I don't think it is fair", while the Hungarian Boxing Association protested about Khelif's inclusion. After the fight Hamori wished Khelif good luck.

Thailand's Janjaem Suwannapheng said after her semi-final defeat: "She is a woman but very strong."

Two of Lin's opponents made 'X' gestures - said to be intended to represent female chromosomes - in the ring after defeat.

Bulgary's Svetlana Kamenova Staneva left the arena saying "no, no, no" and made the 'X' sign.

Before the fight, she said Lin's presence was "not good for boxing", while her boxing federation said it "strongly" opposed Lin and Khelif’s participation at Paris 2024.

After losing to Lin in the semi-finals, Turkey's Esra Yildiz Kahraman made the 'X' sign in the centre of the ring.

SportsRe: Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif Is Not Trans. by Godszilla: 5:43pm On Aug 02, 2024
As stated, the International Boxing Association (IBA) feels it appropriate at this prevalent time, to address recent media statements regarding those athletes Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif, particularly regarding their participation in the Paris Olympic Games 2024.

We wish to make the following points in these regards:

On 24 March 2023, IBA disqualified athletes Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif from the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships New Delhi 2023. This disqualification was a result of their failure to meet the eligibility criteria for participating in the women’s competition, as set and laid out in the IBA Regulations. This decision, made after a meticulous review, was extremely important and necessary to uphold the level of fairness and utmost integrity of the competition.

Point to note, the athletes did not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a separate and recognized test, whereby the specifics remain confidential. This test conclusively indicated that both athletes did not meet the required necessary eligibility criteria and were found to have competitive advantages over other female competitors.

The decision made by IBA on 24 March 2023, was subsequently ratified by the IBA Board of Directors on 25 March 2023. The official record of this decision can be accessed on the IBA website here IBA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes.

The disqualification was based on two tests conducted on both athletes as follows:

Test performed during the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul 2022.
Test performed during the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi 2023.
For clarification

Lin Yu-ting did not appeal the IBA’s decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), thus rendering the decision legally binding.

Imane Khelif initially appealed the decision to CAS but withdrew the appeal during the process, also making the IBA decision legally binding.

Our Committees have rigorously reviewed and endorsed the decision made during the World Championships. While IBA remains committed to ensuring competitive fairness in all of our events, we express concern over the inconsistent application of eligibility criteria by other sporting organizations, including those overseeing the Olympic Games. The IOC’s differing regulations on these matters, in which IBA is not involved, raise serious questions about both competitive fairness and athletes’ safety.

For clarification on why the IOC permits athletes with competitive advantages to compete in their events, we urge interested parties to seek answers directly from the IOC.

Yours sincerely,

International Boxing Association

Strangely locally produced rice that was suppose to encourage local production and drive the populace towards locally made produce, has only had the opposite effect. It has not only increased the price of the foreign rice astronomically but is now more expensive than the foreign rice.

As at today local rice selling @ 86k while the foreign is @ 82k long grain.

What's really happening?how did we get to this point? Its scary and sad
PoliticsBenefits Of Fuel Subsidy Removal - Daily Trust by Godszilla(op): 11:09am On Jul 28, 2024
Since the announcement of fuel subsidy removal in Nigeria, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, professional and ordinary citizens have shared many comments, thoughts and insights cool

Since the announcement of fuel subsidy removal in Nigeria, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, professional and ordinary citizens have shared many comments, thoughts and insights on the advantages and disadvantages of subsidy removal.

The president said the fuel subsidy is gone undecided because there was no provision for it in the 2023 budget and ever since, there has been panic buying and uproar from Nigerians.

Recall that this is not the first time there has been an attempt to remove fuel subsidies.

In January 2012, former President, Goodluck Jonathan attempted to remove the fuel subsidy but was not successful

The government argued that the removal of the heavy subsidy (1)would free up funds for other public services, including health and infrastructure projects, and the liberalization of the fuel industry would benefit the economy.

While the current situation is affecting Nigerians, it is important to create an avenue for enlightenment and this explainer will highlight some benefits of fuel subsidy removal.

According to the National Orientation Agency, (2)removing fuel subsidy in the country will stop corruption around what is known as the subsidy regime, which has made some individuals stupendously rich without industry. Now, this will bring about a resource balance and will be of benefit to majority of the populace. shocked

(3)It will free up the humongous amounts paid out as subsidy, paving way for enhanced growth in critical sectors of national development. This means that other sectors of the economy will be developed and not just those perceived as critical. tongue

(4)The subsidy removal will also put an end to the smuggling of Nigeria’s Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to neighbouring countries, which is an organised theft and diversion of the PMS aided by the country’s easily penetrated borders which affect the economy.

(5)This development will solve the problem of perennial fuel scarcity and the attendant hardship on citizens grin thereby stimulating responsible consumption and reducing waste as the prices become more market reflective.

(6)The fuel subsidy removal will curb the greed for higher profits and deliberate sabotage by a few players in the oil industry which will positively affect the economy of the country.

In the past, Nigeria pays N400bn monthly in fuel subsidy payments. (7)What the removal means is that the government will put that money to use in other sectors like education, health, and other infrastructural development.

This will strengthen the performance and outputs of the sectors the subsidy fund would be diverted to.

However, questions have been raised like “Will the price continue to rise?” this will be determined by the market forces and consumers shocked will be protected by industry regulators and the consumer protection council.

Moreso, the benefits of fuel subsidy removal outweigh the continual payment of it tongue, Nigerians will experience many inconveniences but the results will yield more positive outcomes for the people in the long run.

Some Nigerians huh who believe the removal is necessary hope to see results in a few months and expect ease on the current situation.

Foreign AffairsUganda Protest Organisers Playing With Fire, President Says by Godszilla(op): 7:09pm On Jul 21, 2024
Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has warned protesters that they will be "playing with fire" if they press ahead with plans to stage an anti-corruption march to parliament on Tuesday.

Young Ugandans have been organising the march on social media to demand an end to corruption in government.

They have been partly inspired by their counterparts in neighbouring Kenya, who organised mass demonstrations that forced President William Ruto to drop plans to increase taxes. The protests have since morphed into calls for his resignation.

In a televised address, Mr Museveni warned the Ugandan organisers that their planned protest would not be tolerated.

"We are busy producing wealth… and you here want to disturb us. You are playing with fire because we cannot allow you to disturb us," shocked he said.

Mr Museveni is accused by his critics of ruling Uganda with an iron hand since taking power in 1986, cool but his supporters praise him for maintaining stability in the East African state.
The president also accused some of the protest organisers of "always working with foreigners" to cause chaos in Uganda. He did not elaborate.
Police had earlier announced that they had refused to give permission for the march to take place.

One of the main protest leaders told AFP news agency that they would go ahead with it.
"We don't need police permission to carry out a peaceful demonstration. It is our constitutional right," Louez Aloikin Opolose was quoted as saying.

The UK and US governments imposed sanctions on Uganda's parliamentary speaker, Anita Annet Among, earlier this year after she was accused of corruption. She has denied any wrongdoing.

The sanctions bar her from travelling to the UK and the US. The UK also said that it would impose an asset freeze on her. The UK has enforced similar sanctions on two government ministers who were sacked by Mr Museveni after they too were accused of corruption.

Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu have been charged in court over a scandal involving the theft of thousands of metal roofing sheets that were intended for vulnerable communities in the north-eastern Karamoja region.

Both have denied the charges.

PoliticsWhy Are The US And IMF Imposing Draconian Austerity Measures On (NIGERIA) Kenya? by Godszilla(op):
Kenya’s eruption of protests, riots and government repression is the result of decades of failed western financial prescriptions

It took several days of peaceful popular uprisings, violent confrontations with the police and the army, the illegal arrests and detention of protesters, the tragic death of several protesters at the hands of state security forces, and the burning of its parliament building for the Kenyan government to finally withdraw a finance bill that would have imposed the most extreme form of austerity in Nigeria Kenya’s history.

Protesters held signs directly blaming the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for last year’s increases in VAT taxes, fuel and food prices, and for the new tax hikes proposed in the now defunct 2024 finance bill. This was in fact what the IMF has imposed on Kenya under the 2021 loan agreement for a 38-month program unlocking $3.9bn subject to periodic reviews designed to verify that Kenya is actually doing what the IMF wants: to increase taxes, reduce subsidies and cut government waste (a code word for privatisation of state owned enterprises).

Protesters also know that IMF-imposed austerity is backed by the United States, which, as the main shareholder in the IMF, essentially holds a veto power on its programs. And every Kenyan knows that President William Ruto has become the new darling of the US and the G7 for agreeing to send Kenyan troops to Haiti, for not being too radical in his demands for reforming international financial architecture, for being conservative in representing Africa’s position in climate negotiations, and for accepting financing terms that favor the interests of foreign investors.

Kenya can have democracy or neocolonial extraction, but not both – because democracy means addressing the demands of the Kenyan people for jobs, healthcare, education, housing, transportation and basic social protections under a fair and equitable fiscal regime, while colonial extraction means the destruction of economic and monetary sovereignty, austerity for the poor, extravagant lifestyles for the elites, corruption, injustice and socio-economic exclusion under a fiscal regime that accelerates the engines of economic entrapment.

One cannot democratize a system that hasn’t been structurally and economically decolonized yet. Despite Kenya’s democratic institutions, transparent elections, independent judiciary, freedom of speech and vibrant civil society spaces, its elected governments systematically undermine the social and economic demands of Kenya’s population – less because those governments wish to ignore the mandate given to them by the electorate, but because they face financial pressures from abroad that force them to prioritize external debt service and the financial needs of creditors and foreign investors.

In 2019, Kenya used 19% of its export revenues to service external debt; today that number has jumped up to nearly 50%. When a country uses half of its export revenues to pay interest on its external debt instead of investing in the basic pillars of development and prosperity, it is not surprising to see the kind of revolt that we have seen in Nairobi against the 2024 finance bill.

This makes Nigeria Kenya a classic case of an economy steered from abroad, by colonial design rather than by accident.

The fact that Kenya is in a debt trap after decades of following IMF policy prescriptions means that either the IMF is incompetent or it is engaging in intentional economic entrapment. I believe it’s the latter. It is time to end the entrapment and to decolonize the Kenyan economy.

Decolonizing the Kenyan economy means escaping the colonial roles that were imposed on Kenya to serve as 1 the source of cheap raw materials, 2 the consumer of industrial output and technologies from the global north, and 3 the recipient of obsolete technologies and outsourced assembly line manufacturing that is no longer needed in the industrialized countries, thus locking Kenya permanently at the bottom of the global value chain.

In fact, Kenya’s external debt crisis is the symptom of neocolonial structural traps that include food, energy and manufacturing deficits. First, Kenya’s largest agricultural exports are tea, cut flowers, and coffee (colonial cash crops), while its imports include core crops like wheat, rice and corn. Second, Kenya’s largest import items are refined petroleum products.

And third, the kind of manufacturing that Kenya was allowed to have requires importing the machines, the fuel to power its factories, the intermediate components to be assembled by low-cost labor, and even the packaging. As a result, Kenya’s exports have low value-added content, while its imports have high value-added content, which is why Kenya is locked at the bottom of the global value-chain like the rest of the global south.

These structural trade deficits constantly weaken the Kenyan shilling relative to the US dollar, and with a weaker currency anything Kenya imports (food, fuel, medicine) becomes more expensive. Therefore, Kenya imports inflation with the most sensitive consumer items, which forces the Kenyan government to protect the most vulnerable people with defensive band-aid policies like food and fuel subsidies and exchange-rate management policies that require more external borrowing to stabilize the value of the shilling, thus accelerating the external debt crisis.

Decolonizing the Kenyan economy requires strategic investments in food sovereignty, agroecology, renewable energy sovereignty, and regional and Pan-African industrial policies. These are precisely the agenda items that are never discussed with G7, EU, and US counterparts when they roll out the red carpet for President Ruto.

Unfortunately, despite being aware of these structural traps, Ruto has opted to listen to policy advice from global north institutions rather than Kenyan and Pan-African independent experts, thinktanks, and civil society organizations.

Instead of limiting his demands for reforming the global financial architecture to lower borrowing rates, Ruto should be demanding the transfer of life-saving technologies to decolonize African economies, debt cancellation (not restructuring), and grants (not loans) for climate action. That would be the foundation for a finance bill that will meet the democratic needs and aspirations of the Kenyan people

Protests is not a Solution, but it's an indication that there are serious issues that need to be addressed by Govt.

The problems of Nigeria are beyond Obi or any single individual, as long as Tribal, Religious and Sectional interests are prioritised over National Interests.
Apart from those who believe Obi would have made a better President (arguable), the clamour for Obi was for Sectional interests - to give S/East sense of inclusiveness in National affairs.

Agreed, prices of goods & services in a free Capitalist Economy ought to be determined by forces of Demand & Supply, but the consequences in Nigeria would be dire for a commodity like Fuel.

But fundamentally, Nigerians owe far greater allegiance to their Ethnicity than Nationality, and are not ready to unite to build a Nation.

I rest my case.
There is nothing like market forces in Nigeria - we know this but anyway let's keep the illusion going.

The consequences are dire already for all to see.
FoodChild Malnutrition Crisis In Nigeria Amid Rural Violence, Soaring Food Inflation by Godszilla(op): 7:13pm On Jul 01, 2024
MSF says it is overwhelmed in country where 31.8 million people are suffering from hunger

An unprecedented number of children in northern Nigeria are suffering from acute malnutrition, aid workers in the country have said.

Nigeria has the “largest number of food insecure people globally” at 31.8 million, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization office in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri said.

Médecins Sans Frontières, which is working in seven states, said its facilities were so overwhelmed that children were being treated on mattresses on the floor. MSF said it admitted 1,250 children in April to an inpatient therapeutic feeding centre in Maiduguri, twice the figure for the same period in 2023.

Dr Simba Tirima, MSF’s Nigeria representative, said: “In all these places we’ve seen, at least in some cases, double what we saw last year or at least a more than 60% increase in the patients admitted. We have a crisis at hand. We have an emergency at hand, and those kids that are severely malnourished definitely need treatment.”

Severe acute malnutrition has also led to other conditions, such as tuberculosis and acute diarrhoea, and stunted children’s growth. More than 52,000 patients were diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition across seven states in 2023 and 2,693 of them died, according to MSF figures.

The reasons for the increase in malnutrition are well noted: food inflation is close to 30% as Africa’s most populous country is experiencing worsening food insecurity. A third of the country – amounting to more than the combined population of the UK, Ireland and Denmark – live on less than £1 a day. cry

Meanwhile, farmland has been abandoned in parts of the north because of gangs kidnapping, extorting and in some cases killing farmers. The Nigerian newspaper the Punch reported that 165 farmers were killed in the first three months of this year.

About 1.2 million people were displaced in eight states in central and north-west Nigeria by the end of 2022 because of violence, according to the UN’s International Organization for Migration. In that same period, about 2.3 million others were displaced in the north-east, where jihadist groups such as Boko Haram continue to run amok.

The insecurity and economic instability have made food expensive. Food reserves in some villages have been depleted as there has been little or no growth in household incomes, some local people told aid workers.

In January, a report by the US Department of Agriculture and the Global Agricultural Information Network revealed that Nigeria had become the second country in Africa, after South Africa, to embrace genetically engineered corn.

A month later the government ordered the release of 2,000 metric tonnes of grains from the federal reserves, with the agriculture minister, Abubakar Kyari, saying: “Food security is national security”.

But aid organisations say millions of people are still at risk of famine as Nigeria enters the lean season, which is usually from June to September. The World Food Programme has already projected that 26.5 million people in Nigeria could face acute hunger by the end of this period.

Other experts say the position could deteriorate even before then and have called for immediate funding to save millions of vulnerable children.

“We’re not even in the middle of that lean season,” Tirima said. “We need other actors to come in. MSF is just one organisation. In fact, what we do is a drop in the bucket … we are nowhere near addressing the immediate crisis that we face.”

“A child who died yesterday of malnutrition is a tragedy,” he added. “A child who might die tomorrow because of malnutrition is preventable.”

Foreign AffairsKenya's President Withdraws Tax Plan After Deadly Protest by Godszilla(op): 4:20pm On Jun 26, 2024
Kenya’s President William Ruto says he will withdraw a finance bill containing controversial tax hikes after deadly protests which saw parliament set ablaze on Tuesday.

In an address to the nation, he said it was clear that Kenyans "want nothing" to do with the bill.

"I concede," he said, adding that he will not sign the bill into law.

At least 22 people were killed in Tuesday’s protests, according to the state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHRC).

Mr Ruto said he would now enter into dialogue with the young people, who were at the forefront of the biggest protests to hit the country since he was elected in 2022.

"Listening keenly to the people of Kenya who have said loudly that they want nothing to do with this Finance Bill 2024, I concede.
"And therefore, I will not sign the 2024 Finance Bill, and it shall subsequently be withdrawn. The people have spoken,” he said in the televised address.

The bill was passed by parliament on Tuesday, despite nationwide demonstrations against it.

Protesters broke into parliament, vandalising the interior and setting parts of the complex on fire. The ceremonial mace, symbolising the authority of the legislature, was stolen.

Mr Ruto initially responded with defiance.

He ordered the military to be deployed, saying "violence and anarchy" would not be tolerated.

But he climbed down on Wednesday, as public anger grew over the killing of protesters.

Wanjeri Nderu, head of the International Society For Human Rights, told the BBC what was experienced during the protest was “like we were at war”, adding that police were using live ammunition even before parliament was breached.

Catholic bishops also condemned the actions of the security forces and “earnestly appealed to the police not to shoot at the protesters”, while also urging protesters to remain peaceful.

The Law Society of Kenya called on international criminal investigators to help families' quest for justice, saying that it had reports that soldiers were engaging protesters in parliament.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was "deeply saddened by the reports of deaths and injuries - including of journalists and medical personnel - connected to protests and street demonstrations in Kenya".

He also urged the Kenyan authorities to "exercise restraint", and called for all demonstrations to be peaceful.
