CrimeThree Arrested For Killings In Ogun Community by GoodBehave(op): 7:42am On May 25, 2017
• Suspects accuse village prince of killing leader

Samson Folarin

The Zone 2 Police Command has arrested three men said to be responsible for several killings in the Ijoko area of Ogun State .

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects – Moses Anthony , Kabiru Ajao and Samson Adagun – were arrested by operatives of the Zonal Intervention Squad after a tip -off.

The police said the suspects were responsible for the death of a welder , identified only as Lanre , who was shot dead about a week ago .

The police added that operatives recovered three cut -to -size guns and four live cartridges from the suspects during a search of their hideouts.

However, the men , who admitted to being members of the Eiye Confraternity , said their action followed the killing of their leader , Olakunle Adelabu, aka Callous .

Adelabu was a 400- level student of Animal Science and Livestock Production of the Federal University of Agriculture , Abeokuta.

The suspects noted that they joined some of Adelabu’ s undergraduate friends to unleash mayhem on the community during which the welder , Lanre , was shot dead .

Anthony, a national of Cotonou , Benin Republic , said the crisis in the Ijoko community started after the son of a traditional ruler, Next Turn , who was a member of the Eiye cult decamped to Aiye .
He said the prince accused the Eiye members of betraying his father by taking sides with a rival traditional ruler.

He said , “ Because of that, the prince and his group started killing every Eiye member in the community , and at a point , we fled to Ifo, a neighbouring community, where Callous ( Adelabu) was managing a site .

“ Callous , who was our number one, went to Ijoko on April 19. He was leaving for school the following day when the gang led by the prince broke his skull with stones .

“ After Callous was killed, some of his undergraduate friends joined us in launching a reprisal.

“ Those that joined us to carry out the operation were undergraduates of FUNAAB and they were seven in number. They are Shakur, Sikiru, Sola, Wale , Joshua, Taju and Kehinde. ”

Asked how the gang came about the arms and ammunition, Anthony said they belonged to Adelabu, adding that he didn ’ t know how he got them .

Another suspect , Ajao , who hails from Ede, Osun State , denied following the gang that shot the welder .

“ When they killed our brother ,
Callous , our gang members went to retaliate . Those that killed
Callous were led by a prince . When the police barge into my house while I was asleep , I told them I was a cult member, but I didn ’ t join them for the reprisal, ” he said .

The third suspect , Adagun, a 25-year - old indigene of Kogi State , urged the police to arrest other members of the rival gang, saying without that , there would be no peace in the community.

“ The Aiye members have chased Eiye members from Ijoko because they have the support of the prince . The killings will not end until the police arrest the prince, ” he added .

The Zonal Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos , said the suspects were among many others that the police had declared wanted for cult-related activities and killings in Ogun State .

She explained that the Assistant Inspector- General of Police, Adamu Ibrahim , had ordered that they be smoked out of their hideouts , which led to the operation .
She said , “ We got information that these men and others still at large are members of a killer squad and also members of a secret society . The ZIS operatives moved into the community and three of them were apprehended . During a search of their hideout , three cut -to -size guns were recovered, as well as four cartridges . They confessed that their leader was killed by a rival gang and they went on a revenge mission, during which they killed one Lanre .

They will be arraigned in court for offences bordering on cultism and murder. ”

The Public Relations Officer of FUNAAB, Emi Alawode , promised to get back to our correspondent to react to the story and confirm the studentship of Adelabu.

She had yet to do so as of press time.
However, on the Facebook of the deceased , some of his friends paid tributes to his memories .

One Adokin said , “ My Olakunle ; he was indeed a loving husband and a caring father . I love you so much , but God loves you more. And to FUNAAB students , accept my condolences . ”

One Temitope said , “ I tried your line, but it wasn ’ t going through. You mean Carlos don die like dat ?”

PoliticsPrayer, Fast Not Enough To Move Nigeria Forward, Says Osinbajo by GoodBehave(op): 5:07am On May 25, 2017
https://punchng.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/06133343/Vice-President-Yemi-Osinbajo1.jpgOlalekan Adetayo and Ifeanyi Onuba, Abuja

The Acting President , Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday , said no amount of prayer and fast by Nigerians could move the nation forward without hard work .

Osinbajo said as a pastor himself, he understood the law of sowing and reaping and knew the implication of leaving what was supposed to be done undone.

The Acting President spoke in Abuja during an interactive session organised for public and civil servants on the implementation of the three Executive Orders which he signed last week.

He said the prosperity and abundance being enjoyed by great nations today were not created by spirits , but by men.

While saying the executive orders were meant to aid the ease of doing business in Nigeria , he warned that anytime government officials deliberately delayed what they could do immediately, they were holding back the future of the country.

Osinbajo stated, “ No matter how much you pray or fast , our country cannot grow without some of us deciding to do the hard work that makes nations work .

“ I am a pastor , a spiritual person, and I understand the law of sowing and reaping . It is a spiritual law that has tremendous physical implications. Every time that we delay , or frustrate what we can do today , leaving it till tomorrow, we hold back the future. We too must reap what we have sown by experiencing delays.

“ If you help others to achieve , if you help your nation , you have sown good seeds. You will find help and you will prosper too . ”
Osinbajo urged the officials not to see the policies as government but personal policies.

He warned government officials against stifling businesses by delaying their registration , adding that such unnecessary delays also affected employment.

The acting President said , “ Every generation of people owes the next generation a debt. That debt is paid by ensuring that we provide for the means for the next generation to survive .

“ Or at least , we have a duty to ensure that we do not destroy the means of survival and prosperity of the next generation.

“ But there are some people in every generation who have a special burden , a more important role than others in preparing for present prosperity and future abundance . ”

Osinbajo stated that small or large businesses could not be created or could be frustrated out of existence if the environment for doing business in a country was harsh or difficult .

He stated , “ So when a potential business owner wants to register a company, collect tax clearance certificate or obtain NAFDAC registration or SON certification, or expatriate quotas , or any other papers , approvals or certification from government , and we do not willingly and efficiently help him or her, we are killing the jobs and prosperity that he would have created .

“ Every time we say come back next week to someone for something we can do today, we postpone prosperity of one person but in reality, we postpone the prosperity of so many who would have earned something from the business .

“ So every time that a public official is an obstacle to business in any way, he attacks the prosperity of our economy and he attacks our future because it means our children cannot find jobs. ”

On improved remuneration , Osinbajo assured the officials that they were in safe hands with him and President Muhammadu Buhari in the saddle .

“ I have served in the public service most of my adult life . As a university teacher , adviser to a federal minister and attorney -general , I earned salaries; so I understand how salary increases can be such good news, ” Osinbajo added .

The acting President stated that Nigerians would soon start seeing the manifestation of some of the reforms taken by the Federal Government in the agricultural sector.
He declared that the country would soon start producing local rice that would compete favourably with any brand in the world .

Osinbajo said this in Abuja during an interactive session with some middle level civil and public servants on the ease of doing business .

He called on Nigerians to increase their patronage of products manufactured locally , adding that this would enable the government to reduce the level of unemployment in the country.

Citing the example of rice production, he explained that Nigeria had enough capacity to grow quality rice that would meet the demands of not only Nigerians but all the countries in Africa .

Osinbajo stated that if Nigerians could consume what the country produced locally , the twin problems of poverty and unemployment would be easily addressed.

He said it was worrisome that rice imported from China , India and Thailand was sold at cheaper prices to those produced locally, adding that this was as a result of subsidy enjoyed by farmers in those countries.

The acting President added , “ It is worrisome that locally produced rice is still expensive than imported rice from India , China and Thailand.

“ Rice produced in these countries are subsidised by their respective governments making rice from the region cheap and affordable

“ By subsiding rice production for farmers , more jobs are created. We are planning to introduce some kinds of assistance to our farmers in due course . Our rice will have to compete with any rice in the world . ”

PoliticsMarginalisation: Ekweremadu, Obi, Soludo, Others To Meet by GoodBehave(op): 4:56am On May 25, 2017

Prominent Igbo leaders are expected to converge on Enugu on Saturday to deliberate on the agitation for Biafra, among many other issues.

Acting under the aegis of the World Igbo Congress, the Igbo leaders, according to a statement by its chairman, Joe Eto, on Wednesday, said one of the issues that would be discussed included the ‘marginalisation of the Igbo by the Buhari-led administration’.

The statement said previous meetings of the congress had been held in the United States of America, adding that prominent scholars from the South-West zone would participate in the meeting.

Eto said a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof Chukwuma Soludo; Founder, Centre for Values in Leadership, Prof Pat Utomi; Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; a former governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi; oil magnate, Arthur Eze; Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, were among the personalities expected at the meeting.

The statement said, “The chaotic Buhari government and its visible policy of the non-inclusion of the Igbo in administration is causing unbearable discomfort among the Igbo, particularly the youths who cannot get jobs.

“The time is very ripe for a summit in Nigeria to discuss with the Igbo leadership and the despondent masses in order to chart a way out of the quagmire.”

Eto said, “Biafra is not going to die. Like every other denied agitation for self-determination, Biafra will, at least, remain on the minds of those who seek self-determination.

“Inflicting suppressive and repressive policies on the Igbo in Nigeria will continue to trigger the demand for self-rule. It is really the Nigerian government’s prerogative to have one Nigeria where all components of the nation are treated as equal partners.”

Eniola Akinkuotu , Abuja
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned Dr . Fortunate Fiberesima, the ex -Chief Physician to former President Goodluck Jonathan .

The EFCC said in a statement by its spokesman , Mr . Wilson Uwujaren, that Fiberesima , who is also a former Chief Executive Officer , State House Medical Centre, was arraigned for an alleged fraud of N 258. 9m .

The doctor was arraigned before Justice Peter Affen of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama , Abuja on six counts bordering on money laundering .

Fiberesima was alleged to have abused his position as the chief physician to the President in 2012 in awarding a contract to a company where he had an interest .

According to the anti - graft agency, the defendant, who also parades himself as Fortunate David and David ThankGod Fiberesima, was initially meant to be arraigned by the EFCC on March 7, but the trial judge observed that , “ all the charges are under the ICPC Act and not that of the EFCC” and consequently ordered that the charge be either amended or transferred to the appropriate authority for prosecution .

At the resumed sitting on Tuesday, the defendant pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against him by the EFCC.
One of the charges read , “ That you , Dr . Fortunate Fiberesima ( a. k. a. Fortunate David and David ThankGod Fiberesima) , being the former Chief Executive Officer of the State House Medical Centre, Abuja and Chief Physician to the President , while employed in the public service , sometime in 2012, in Abuja , within the jurisdiction of this honourable court , knowingly and directly held a private interest in the contract for land reclamation at the State House Medical Centre, Abuja in the sum of N 258, 950, 000, which contract was awarded to T . E . & C Limited , a company in which you were a director, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 12 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act , 2000. ”

Counsel for the defendant, U . B . Eyo, prayed the court to grant his client bail in liberal terms . He said the accused person had no previous criminal record and he would always be available for his trial.
Counsel for the EFCC, Y . Y . Tarfa, did not oppose the bail application
Justice Affen ordered that the defendant should continue on the bail condition earlier granted him but added that he should submit his passport to the court registrar .

The case was , thereafter , adjourned till June 6, 2017 for commencement of trial .
