Politics / SOLUDO VS IWEALA: The Pot And The Kettle by GoodieGreat: 1:20pm On Feb 02, 2015
The office of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, the co-ordinating Minister of the Economy has promptly responded to the content of a recently published article titled “BUHARI Vs JONATHAN – Beyond the election.” (http://goodygreat..com/2015/02/buhari-vs-jonathan-beyond-election-by.html)
The article which was written by the former Governor of the Central Bank, Chukwuma Soludo, as an attempt to proffer solutions to our severe social and economic challenges simply echoed the prevailing popular sentiments regarding the failure, of President Jonathan’s Economic Policies, to improve the lot of our people.
Iweala-and-soludo1However, although Soludo’s contribution does not contain any fresh mind boggling revelations on the incompetence of the current Economic Management Team, his glowing reference to the economic performance during Obasanjo’s era should ordinarily be sweet, comforting notes to Ngozi who was the leader of the Economic ‘wizards’ who were largely seconded from their responsibilities with the IMF and World Bank to rejig the Nigerian economy;

nonetheless, Soludo’s latter day condemnation of the “terrible policy choices” made by the Honourable Minister in her second coming in Jonathan’s administration, probably stung madam Minister as a betrayal of espirit des corps. Consequently, the Iron Lady quickly fired back in a Press release; in her response, according to Vangard: Dr. Iweala noted that “It is a sad day for Nigeria and the Economics profession that someone like Soludo, a former CBN governor, should write such an article.

If Soludo wants to regain respect, he should return to the path of professionalism. He certainly needs something to improve his image from that of someone whose sojourn into national economic management ended in disaster for the banking sector.”

It is not clear when the Honourable Minister, realised that CBN’s management of monetary policies was a disaster; the question is, did she ever bring her reservations about the potential adverse impact of Soludo’s mismanagement to President Obasanjo, and if not, why did she choose to simply keep mute despite the potential magnitude of devastation that a predictable tsunami could cause to the banking sector? Was such reaction the Honourable Minister’s best expression of her patriotism?

Curiously, those of us who expressed concerns on the shenanigans of Soludo’s management of the banking subsector were quite simply ignored until the bubble burst in 2008/9, despite the Governor’s unflinching assurances to all and sundry that the Nigerian banking sector was immune from the economic crisis that engulfed everywhere else worldwide.

Latter events have shown that Soludo’s acclaimed banking consolidation and market regulations were all founded on quicksand and Okonjo Iweala is apparently clearly now more appreciative of the fact that Chukwuma’s reckless brand of banking regulation and supervision, ultimately, led to “massive accumulation of bad debts, (which) meant that our banks were ill-positioned to deal with the global financial crises when it hit. In fact, the banking sector was brought to its knees and required a massive bailout by Nigerian taxpayers.”

It has not been verified if Soludo was a covert beneficiary of the rot he knowingly induced in the banking sector, but according to Iweala, it was evident that “there was very little separation between the regulators and the regulated.” Thus, Soludo unwittingly or knowingly sustained a relationship that “is clearly a violation of a key requirement of central banking success.”

Iweala holds that the regulatory lacuna led “to infractions in corporate governance as loans and other credit instruments running to hundreds of billions of Naira were extended to clients without following due process, and several of these loans could not be paid back.”

So, according to Ngozi “Soludo’s singlehanded mismanagement of the banking sector led to an incredible accumulation of liabilities that will cost taxpayers about N5.67tn (over $36bn) to clean up.” Sadly, future generations will inherit this debt.

The Honourable Minister also noted that the amount “constitutes the bulk of Nigeria’s contingent current liabilities’ which were decried as profligate in Soludo’s article.”

Conversely, Chukwuma’s article paints a completely different picture which portrays the erstwhile CBN Governor as the brain behind an exemplary and also socially and economically progressive Economic Management Team. Nonetheless, the public will recognise such perception as false. Indeed, the Economic strategies of the current administration are clearly a continuation of the strategies that typified the Obasanjo era.

All the uncomplimentary features that Soludo observes in the current regime are infact amplified derivatives of Soludo/Iweala fiscal and monetary strategies between 1999-2007.

For example, the fiscal tradition of comparatively modest annual capital votes against increasing humongous recurrent consumption, prevailed in that era; Okonjo Iweala has loyally followed the same trajectory, such that almost 90% of total spending in 2015 will be devoted to plain consumption with a paltry vote of 10% for infrastructural remediation; regrettably, education budget has hardly exceeded 15% since 1999, despite UNESCO’s best practice recommendation of 26% of annual budgets.

Furthermore, CBN’s current monetary framework adopts the same template that Soludo inherited from his predecessor; for example, the oppressive system of placing government deposits for zero returns, while government embarks on regular borrowings from commercial banks with extreme rates which distort resource allocation was a permanent feature of Soludo’s monetary strategy, despite the needless cost and the attendant heavy accumulation of loans which are ultimately stored away as idle funds.

Similarly, the present administration continues to battle with the oppressive burden of surplus cash which the former CBN Governor also sweated unsuccessfully throughout his tenure to mop up. Curiously, still no one appears concerned on the unending source of systemic surplus Naira despite its abiding adverse consequences on the level of inflation and the capacity of small and medium enterprises to thrive and create more jobs.

Furthermore, CBN’s anti-social strategy of deliberately creating dollar scarcity after suffocating the market with freshly created humongous Naira values is actually responsible for increasingly weaker Naira exchange rates even when reserves are fortuitously bountiful; curiously, Lamido Sanusi kept faith with this same strategy and Emefiele has also become a loyal apostle.

Sadly also, cost of funds to the real sector has remained well above 20%, the same oppressive rates that constrained industrial growth during the Soludo years as CBN Governor; inexplicably, also, over N40bn contributed as levies from banks’ profits under Soludo were returned by the Governor to the same banks because CBN could not come up with an acceptable strategy for disbursement!

Yet, inspite of considerable evidence of impunity and controversial deals while CBN Governor, Soludo has surprisingly elected himself as our saviour.

Politics / Buhari Threatens To Drag NTA, AIT To Court Over Hate Broadcasts by GoodieGreat: 12:33pm On Feb 02, 2015
The Presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari (ret), has threatened to take legal action against the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, and the African Independent Television, AIT, for airing hate broadcasts against his personality.
Muhammadu Buhari

This came on a day the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, warned all broadcasting stations operating in the country to adhere strictly to the provisions of the broadcasting code or risk sanctions.

In a protest letter lodged through the Legal Director of APC Presidential Campaign Council, Mr. Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume, SAN, Buhari, insisted that the two television stations must not only retract the “hate documentaries,” but also issue a public apology to him.

He said he would not hesitate to seek legal remedy should the television houses refuse to comply with the conditions.

Besides, the APC candidate said he had already petitioned the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC, and the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, asking them to investigate both NTA and AIT over the hate broadcasts and take necessary punitive actions.

“The hate broadcast has been on from Saturday, January 24, 2015 to Sunday, January 25, 2015, at 11p.m. in AIT,” Buhari noted.

According to Vangard, The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has warned all broadcasting stations to adhere strictly to the provisions of the broadcasting code or risk sanctions.

The Director-General of the Commission, Mr. Emeka Mba, who issued the warning, said the Commission acknowledged the effort of broadcasting stations were making in lubricating the nation’s political space, but noted that some stations had been operating outside the provisions of the code in a manner that could become counter-productive to the national objectives of peaceful, free and fair elections.

“We are in exciting times. Political campaigns are under way and the nation is agog with politicians campaigning to persuade the electorate to support them, this is how it should, that is the beauty of democracy,” he said.

Politics / Monday, 2 February 2015 Buhari Vs Jonathan: Beyond The Election, By Charles Sol by GoodieGreat: 12:20pm On Feb 02, 2015
Just keep reading...it's a little long but interesting.
I need to preface this article with a few clarifications. I have taken a long sabbatical leave from partisan politics, and it is real fun watching the drama from the balcony. Having had my own share of public service (I do not need a job from government), I now devote my time and energy in pursuit of other passions, especially abroad.

A few days ago, I read an article in Thisday entitled “Where is Charles Soludo?”, and my answer is that I am still there, only that I have been too busy with extensive international travels to participate in or comment on our national politics and economy. But I occasionally follow events at home. Since the survival and prosperity of Nigeria are at stake, the least some of us (albeit, non-partisan) must do is to engage in public debate. As the elections approach, I owe a duty to share some of my concerns.

In September 2010, I wrote a piece entitled “2011 Elections: Let the Real Debate Begin” and published by Thisday. I understand the Federal Executive Council discussed it, and the Minister of Information rained personal attacks on me during the press briefing. I noted more than six newspaper editorials in support of the issues we raised.

Beside other issues we raised, our main thesis was that the macro economy was dangerously adrift, with little self-insurance mechanisms (and a prediction that if oil prices fell below $40, many state governments would not be able to pay salaries). I gave a subtle hint at easy money and exchange rate depreciations because I did not want to panic the market with a strong statement. Sadly, on the eve of the next elections, literally everything we hinted at has happened. Part of my motivation for this article is that five years after, the real debate is still not happening.

The presidential election next month will be won by either Buhari or Jonathan. For either, it is likely to be a pyrrhic victory. None of them will be able to deliver on the fantastic promises being made on the economy, and if oil prices remain below $60, I see very difficult months ahead, with possible heady collisions with labour, civil society, and indeed the citizenry. To be sure, the presidential election will not be decided by the quality of ‘issues’ or promises canvassed by the candidates.

The debates won’t also change much (except if there is a major gaffe by either candidate like Tofa did in the debate with Abiola). My take is that more than 95% of the likely voters have pretty much made up their minds based largely on other considerations. A few of us remain undecided.

During my brief visit to Nigeria, I watched some of the campaign rallies on television. The tragedy of the current electioneering campaigns is that both parties are missing the golden opportunity to sensitize the citizenry about the enormous challenges ahead and hence mobilize them for the inevitable sacrifices they would be called upon to make soon. Each is promising an El-Dorado.

Let me admit that the two main parties talk around the major development challenges—corruption, insecurity, economy (unemployment/poverty, power, infrastructure, etc) health, education, etc. However, it is my considered view that none of them has any credible agenda to deal with the issues, especially within the context of the evolving global economy and Nigeria’s broken public finance.

The UK Conservative Party’s manifesto for the last election proudly announced that all its programmes were fully costed and were therefore implementable. Neither APC nor PDP can make a similar claim. A plan without the dollar or Naira signs to it is nothing but a wish-list. They are not telling us how much each of their promises will cost and where they will get the money. None talks about the broken or near bankrupt public finance and the strategy to fix it.

Goodluck-Jonathan-new
In response to the question of where the money will come from, I heard one of the politicians say that the problem of Nigeria was not money but the management of resources. This is half-truth. The problem is both. No matter how efficient a father (with a monthly salary of N50,000) is at managing the family resources, I cannot see how he could deliver on a promise to buy a brand new Peugeot 406 for each of his three children in a year.

Even with all the loopholes and waste closed, with increased efficiency per dollar spent, there is still a binding budget constraint. To deliver an efficient national transport infrastructure alone will still cost tens of billions of dollars per annum even by corruption-free, cost-effective means. Did I hear that APC promises a welfare system that will pay between N5,000 and N10,000 per month to the poorest 25 million Nigerians? Just this programme alone will cost between N1.5 and N3 trillion per annum.

Add to this the cost of free primary education plus free meal (to be funded by the federal budget or would it force non-APC state governments to implement the same?), plus some millions of public housing, etc. I have tried to cost some of the promises by both the APC and the PDP, given alternative scenarios for public finance and the numbers don’t add up. Nigerians would be glad to know how both parties would fund their programmes.

Do they intend to accentuate the huge public debt, or raise taxes on the soon to-be-beleaguered private businesses, or massively devalue the naira to rake in baskets of naira from the dwindling oil revenue, or embark on huge fiscal retrenchment with the sack of labour and abandonment of projects, and which areas of waste do they intend to close and how much do they estimate to rake in from them, etc?

I remember that Chief Obafemi Awolowo was asked similar questions in 1978 and 1979 about his promises of free education and free medical services. Even as a teenager, I was impressed by how he reeled out figures about the amounts he would save from various ‘waste’ including the tea/coffee served in government offices. The point is that at least he did his homework and had his numbers and I give credit to his team.

Some 36 years later, the quality of political debate and discourse seems to border on the pedestrian. From the quality of its team, I did not expect much from the current government, but I must confess that I expected APC as a party aspiring to take over from PDP to...

Politics / The Ugly Side Of Buhari And Jonathan by GoodieGreat: 2:50am On Jan 29, 2015
Opinion polls commissioned by ANAP Foundation and conducted by NOI Polls (using Gallup methodology) show that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ) and his main challenger, Major-General Mohammadu Buhari (Buhari) are currently running neck-to-neck in the 2015 Presidential race. The difference between them in terms of potential votes nation wide is statistically insignificant because it is dwarfed considerably by the much larger percentage of voters who remain “Undecided” – and so the race is truly too close to call.

Atedo Peterside just told us through Vangard, this election will therefore not be decided by the loyalists. It will be called by the large number of undecided voters (these are the swing voters) and they have one thing in common – they do not like GEJ, but then they do not like Buhari either (they want change but see Buhari as the type of change that is both alarming and worrisome).

In such circumstances, efforts by both candidates to sell themselves forcefully to their core constituencies may simultaneously alienate the swing voters. When Hausa/Fulani elders and/or retired Generals and Muslim leaders shout forcefully that Buhari must have it, the rest of the nation recoils in horror. The same thing happens when misguided elements from the South-South zone and Christian leaders insist that their zone (or a Christian) must have two full terms in Aso Rock. The truth is that the Presidency is not anyone’s birthright and so it is naive and downright foolish to go down that route. Indeed some of these bold declarations by core supporters are akin to a kiss of death with swing voters.

Buhari publicly declared in 2011 that he will not contest again. Jonathan is said to have privately declared in 2011 that he would only stay for a single term. Let us therefore assume that they have both broken their word by contesting in 2015 and so there is little to be gained with the swing voters by dwelling on this.

Swing voters are moved more by what they do not like about either candidate. At the end of the day therefore they will vote “against” the candidate that they dislike more and their collecive actions will determine who wins. That is why this article focuses on the ugly side of Buhari and GEJ and not on their strengths.

Many of the swing voters are upset. They feel that our two major political parties have “cheated” them by forcing them to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea.

During the course of the 2014 National Conference, where I was a delegate, I made a contribution to the effect that past military rulers, who toppled democratically elected governments, should still be tried for treason so as to serve as a permanent detterent to young and ambitious military officers who will then understand that the long arm of the law may get them even in their old age and even after they claim to have repented. Buhari dethroned a democratically elected government in order to become a military head of state at the end of 1983. Many of the swing voters are true democrats who abhor authoritarianism. Buhari was not a benevolent dictator either. He was a vicious and wicked one who used retroactive decrees to sentence youths to death and to jail journalists who dared to publish the whole truth. Can the leopard shed it’s spots overnight as some would have us believe?

Wickedness and callousness are not matters of style and/or fashion they are a reflection of a real personae. Buhari’s unguarded utterances about him supporting the institution of sharia nationwide and his “famous” statement that Muslims should only vote for Muslims and his threat that the baboon and the dog will be soaked in blood if elections were rigged are all consistent with his unelectable personae, hence his persistent search for devout Christians (with little or no political clout) as Vice Presidential candidates while he is on the capaign trail. Is he simply hanging on to political lightweights that he knows he can devour the day after he gets elected?

On the economy, Buhari was a disaster first time around. He was clearly an economic illiterate and thought he could run the complex Nigerian economy by controlling rations as was done in a military cantonment. He placed everything under import license and empowered some individuals under him to prescribe what quantity of every good Nigeria needed and also sought to prescribe which individuals would import the item and in what quantity. Ignorance was on display all around and it was exploited through massive racketeering by persons in his government who called the shots. That he was deemed to be personally honest became irrelevant and so many of us cheered when ‎soldiers (not known for honesty) put him out of his misery by kicking him out of office in less than 18 months and before he could torture the nation any further.

GEJ is unliked by many because he is seen as being weak and unable to control the excesses of some of his close aides and party chieftains. ‎YES, he eventually stood up to ex-President Obasanjo (who tries to dictate to every serving President), but then who wouldn’t? All future Presidents (including those unborn) now know to avoid Obasanjo like a plague. What manner of ex-President will divulge details of his one-on-one meeting with a serving President to the general public ( in a book), without getting the latter’s prior consent?

NO, GEJ’s vulnerabilities are from the party chieftains and a few dodgy aides that he accommodates and/or tolerates. He also believed too much in assurances from our Security Agencies, Defence Ministers, Chiefs of Defence Staff, National Security Advisers etc. This entire group have lost credibility in the fight against Boko Haram. His most recent utterances suggest that he has realised now, how deadly Boko Haram are, but it is rather late in the day as the elections are a little more than a couple of weeks away. My own position on Boko Haram (BH) has remained consistent. The entire Nigerian elite continue to under-estimate BH at our peril. I would love to wish them away, but history and my head tell me that, like Colombia’s Farc Rebels, BH will still be around in some form or the other for decades.

Presidents who aspire to have a second term in Nigeria face this paradox; ‎if they stand up to all the party Chieftains, over-bearing Governors and Security Chiefs, they will not get re-elected because the Party will throw up a Challenger. If they succumb to this motley/unholy lot, they will slow down economic reform, secure their Party nomination but alienate swing voters nationwide.

The only reason for the swing voters to vote for GEJ therefore is if he can convince them that he will be able to free himself from this motley crowd next time around. Afterall, a second Presidential term is a final term and nobody (except Obasanjo) will ever dream about a third term. ‎In effect, GEJ must convince swing voters that, if they give him a second term, he will be man enough to bite many of the grubby hands that lurk around the higher echelons of his party.

Further complexities in the Presidential race arise because some of the ambitious and highly ‎educated politicians from the North East (in particular) do not want an ageing and not so capable Buhari to ascend a throne which they aspire to occupy in 2019. Buhari was rejected consistently by some of his newer supporters when he was younger and more capable. Ironically, the older and less capable he becomes, the more he appeals to them because they hope to usurp his authority. He has agreed to be dressed up in sheep’s clothing now, but they should beware of the wolf in sheep’s clothing. They might be shut out of Aso Rock if he wins.

Ironically, if these power brokers (who are not known for honesty) come out now to publicly affirm that they will have continuing relevance if Buhari wins, then again the swing voters get turned off because they see corrupt persons surrounding an old and infirm “honest” man who is driven by a blind ambition to re-occupy a seat from which he was booted out prematurely in 1985, even though he recognises that he is not clever enough to understand 21st Century economic and financial transactions through which some of his new and unscrupulous friends hope to loot and/or corner the national treasury under his lazy and ineffective watch.

GEJ has also gathered all sorts of renegades unto his campaign ship. The enemies of his enemy have all become his friends overnight. They are strange bedfellows. In his second term (if he wins) he will need to cut off many of these hangers-on. If he does that they will try to resist, but a second term President is hard to bully. GEJ needs to convince the electorate that he can continue with his bold agricultural sector reforms, his power sector roadmap, overhaul and reform of the transportation sector (beyond the celebration of token and/or paltry railway services) etc.

GEJ’s biggest failure on the economic front was his inability to introduce ‎earth-shaking reforms to trim our recurrent expenditure budget at the Federal level by instituting the massive lay-off of idle civil servants. He did not confront the National Assembly either on this thorny issue. Ironically many of those who accuse him of guilt in this area are guilty of the exact same allegation in their respective States and Local Government Areas.

I am sad that GEJ did not simply go all out to ‎transform our economy in his first term at the risk of being a single term President. Instead he slowed down on some economic reform because he was pandering to power brokers within his political party, who would have a say in helping him to secure a second term.

I am sad that an ageing and incapable Buhari refused to play the role of a King-maker by identifying a single well educated and well meaning younger person 2 or 3 years ago (even if he narrowed his search to his own North West zone) whom he could have groomed and backed to challenge GEJ.

If I vote for GEJ in this election it is because his ugly side is less ugly than Buhari’s known and well-documented uglier side and nothing more. If you disagree with me please note that there is no need for us to fight – our only weapon should be the ballot paper and how we decide to cast it. Those who think they can intimidate swing voters, by threatening mayhem if their candidate does not win a close election, do their candidate a massive disservice because their careless utterances send the swing voters in the opposite direction in a race that is currently too close to call.

Before anybody dismisses ANAP Foundation’s opinion polls again, let me add that similar polls commissioned concurrently by us (using the exact same methodology) show Nasir El-Rufai of the APC with a significant lead over the incumbent PDP Governor (Yero), while the PDP’s Nyesom Wike currently leads APC’s Dakuku Peterside in Rivers State, but there is a large “undecided” element in Rivers State.

Politics / Amaechi’s Criticism, A Challenge – Jonathan by GoodieGreat: 2:28am On Jan 29, 2015
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has admitted the criticism by Governor Rotimi Amaechi that his government has not done anything for the people of Rivers State.

This, he said, was because he did not want to be seen as an ethnic leader. Hence, his resolve to ensure the equitable distribution of resources across the country.

Jonathan’s wife is
from Rivers State. According to Punch.ng,

President Jonathan, who spoke during the presidential rally of the Peoples Democratic Party at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Igwuruta-Ali, Ikwerre Local Government of Rivers State, however, promised to develop the South-South region if elected for a second term in office.

The President was reacting to the criticism by Amaechi, who is also the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, that he (Jonathan) had not done anything for Rivers and Bayelsa states.

Describing Amaechi’s statement as a challenge, Jonathan admitted that though he had not allocated more development to his people, the situation was an indication that he (Jonathan) meant well for the country.

He pointed out that he accepted Amaechi’s challenge, but would do “something” for the South-South states when he is re-elected,

The President said, “What I want to tell you and the rest of the country is that the director-general of the APC presidential campaign organisation, when he was in Yenagoa and when he was in Port Harcourt, mentioned clearly that the President had done nothing for the two states.

“Don’t worry. It is good news because people are saying that I concentrated development in the South-South. Bayelsa State was part of Rivers State. Then, if I don’t concentrate development in this state, that means there has not been development in Rivers and Bayelsa states.

“The DG (Amaechi) is telling Nigerians that I have not done this. That means that I am a transparent person. I did not allocate positions to my people. The DG would have been the very first person to expose me to the rest of the world; not just Nigeria. He would have taken me to America, to South Africa, to France, to UK, but that shows clearly that we mean well for this country.

“In our development, every part of Nigeria must be carried along. You will agree with me that when we looked at the university education, and we insisted that look, the Federal Government must make sure that all Nigerian youths must have opportunity for university education.

“We did not divide North or South; we made sure that all the states that had no federal university got a federal university. I am not going to comment on development in Rivers State and Bayelsa states. I can reassure you that just work with us; vote for us on February 14, for me and Sambo and on February 28, for Wike and Ipalibo. Since we have been challenged that we have not done anything, we will do something.”

Earlier, the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Chief Nyesom Wike, had expressed confidence that the party would win the February 2015 presidential and governorship elections.

Calling on the people of the state to vote for the PDP, Wike, who was formally presented with his party’s flag, criticised Amaechi for his (Amaechi) refusal to approve the application by the state PDP for the usage of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

In her remarked, the President’s wife, Patience, boasted that the PDP would get over 2.4 million votes in Rivers State, adding that such a feat would be an improvement on the 2 million votes won by the party in 2011.

Mrs. Jonathan said that only the PDP had done a lot in the area of women empowerment, maintaining that the women had been able to manage the economy of the country.

Politics / Ebola: Confusion Over Schools’ Resumption by GoodieGreat: 2:30pm On Sep 22, 2014
As both primary and secondary schools nationwide are expected to resume today in compliance with the directive by the Federal Government, parents and teachers have, however, been thrown into confusion following counter-directives by some state governments which have fixed different dates for schools to resume.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers, on its part had earlier directed its members to ignore the directive of the government until they have been sufficiently trained and their schools provided with the necessary preventive and protective equipment against the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.pupils-in-Lagos-schools-11

States where schools are scheduled to resume today include, Abia, Kano, Bayelsa, Imo, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue and Kaduna.

However, states that have directed their schools to resume on various dates in October include Lagos, Osun, Ogun, and Niger.

The Abia State Government, while directing all schools to re-open said it has made necessary arrangements for the safety of returning pupils and teachers.

The state commissioner of Education, Mrs. Monica Philips said the teachers have been given enough training to handle and prevent Ebola outbreak, assuring that infra-red thermometers and sanitizers would be provided to the public schools.

Lagos schools now resume Oct 8

In Lagos State, however, Governor Babatunde Fashola directed that all learning and teaching activities for the next academic session in Lagos schools be suspended until Wednesday, October 8, rather than today, September 22.

Speaking at an interactive session with principals, vice-principals, head-teachers and assistant head-teachers of public primary and secondary schools in the state, Governor Fashola said the additional two weeks would allow for more time to further put in place all necessary precautionary measures against the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Lagos State schools.

The latest directive from Governor Fashola is a dramatic U-turn from his earlier stance in a state-wide broadcast.

According to Vangard, the postponement is already causing confusion among private boarding schools whose pupils have already reported back to their respective institutions for resumption of fresh academic session.

Parents and guardians at the weekend had made frantic efforts to return their children and wards to schools before the state’s government shift in date was announced.

Among the schools which have started receiving pupils include: Agbowa Baptist Grammar School, Light House School, Ikorodu; Caleb International School, among others.

At press time, parents and guardians were confused on whether to withdraw their children/wards from school.

In Niger state, schools have been directed to resume on Monday October 13 for the new session while those in the Boarding schools are expected to resume on Friday, October 10.

Governor Babangida Aliyu, who disclosed this when a delegation of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, those of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC and National Examination Council, NECO paid him a courtesy visit said it was an agreement reached between him, the state Commissioner of Basic Education, Alhaji Danladi Abdulhamid and other stakeholders last week to shift the resumption date till middle of October to allow students enjoy the Eid-el Kabir which is fixed for early next month.

All Federal Government Colleges in Imo State, as well as schools owned by missionaries and individuals will, in full compliance with the directives of the Federal Government, re-open today.

On the contrary, all schools run by Imo State Government will open their doors to pupils on September 29, 2014.

A school principal, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, explained that state schools were not scheduled to re-open today.

“We ended the last academic year a bit late. Mission and private schools closed for the long vacation earlier than public schools. The originally scheduled date for our resumption is September 29”, the school principal said.

At the time of this interview, school principals have not been invited for any meeting by either the Secondary Education Management Board or the Ministry of Education.

According to her, “if and when government invites us for the meeting, we may be told what to do, especially with the advent of Ebola Virus Disease”.

Anambra ready

Anambra State government on its part said it has put in place measures to ensure that pupils and their teachers do not have health issues to contend with when they resume today

Commissioner for Education, Professor Kate Omenugha said all schools have been provided with test kits and sanitizers, while those who would handle them in schools have been trained.

She explained that schools that have no regular water supply have been provided with water in readiness for resumption.

In Bauchi State however, NUT said teachers will not resume classes without Ebola prevention materials and kits in schools.

Chairman of the union, Danjuma Sale in an interview with Vanguard said that teachers in the state will comply with the Federal Government’s directive to resume classes on Sept. 22 (today) but will not teach until the right facilities are put in place in schools.

He said the state government had promised that two teachers from each school in the state would be trained on the prevention of the disease, but has not commenced yet.

Ogun announces October 8

The Ogun State Government on its part announced Wednesday, October 8, as the new resumption date for both public and private primary and secondary schools in the state.

Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa said the new date was arrived at after series of evaluation meetings with stakeholders on measures put in place to prevent outbreak of EVD when the pupils resume.

He said: “Since the Ebola scourge broke out in Lagos, the Ogun State government has put a lot of preventive measures in place.

“So, we have agreed that the new date for resumption be shifted to Wednesday October 8.”

In Benue state, Governor Gabriel Suswam urged schools and parents to abide by the directive of the Federal Government that schools resume today.

The Governor, who spoke, weekend, at the flag off of the Suswam Free Medical Services Initiative, in Vandeikya Local Government Area of the state assured that adequate measures had been put in place to check any outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in the state.

According to him: “At the moment, the government has also started training teachers on how to tackle the disease if any outbreak is recorded in any school in any part of the state.

“We have also taken measures to ensure that medical personnel and facilities are on 24 hours standby to adequately respond to any outbreak in any part of the state. We, therefore, have no reasons not to resume classes on the specified date.

Public and private schools in Adamawa State are divided over today’s resumption date as directed by the Federal Government.

While private schools have concluded arrangements to resume, public schools are not showing any sign that they will resume. A visit by Vanguard to some private schools in the capital clearly indicated that all is set for resumption.

All the schools visited have their sign boards within the gates of their schools directing parents and guardians to send their children and wards to schools unfailingly.

However, public schools have remained adamant over the resumption date as the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT has vowed not to return to classes until adequate measures against the Ebola disease are put in place.

Osun opts for Oct 6

The Osun State Government has also deferred the resumption date of primary and secondary school students in the state till Monday, October 6 to allow principals and teachers receive adequate training and government put in place all necessary measures to prevent Ebola virus in the state.

A statement by the State Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Education, Princess Titilayo Laoye-Tomori said that the state government arrived at the new resumption date after a careful consideration of views from the stakeholders.

Kaduna resumes today

Both private and public primary and secondary Schools in Kaduna State are to resume today, according Vanguard investigation.

Deputy Governor and Chairman Kaduna State Ebola Monitoring and Preventive Committee, Ambassador Nuhu Bajoga, said that the state has put in place every preventive measure in all schools.

Bajoga said: “As you are aware, we have trained all primary and secondary teachers in Kaduna state on measures to take to ensure they contain any outbreak. We are also procuring thermometers and other testing kits for them as the state governor has already approved N170 million for that.
Politics / Boko Haram: Shekau Impersonator Killed By Nigerian Troops? by GoodieGreat: 2:30am On Sep 22, 2014
The Nigerian military may have recorded a major victory in the war against Boko Haram as the man suspected to be mimicking late Abubakar Shekau in recent videos from the sect, may have been killed during the September 17th battle in Konduga, Borno state.

A senior military source said "it is getting more certain that the terrorists' commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17."

Sources at the image making company of the Nigerian government, PRNigeria, say the death of the man believed to be the leader of the group is responsible for the scattering of the sect members in different independent locations in neighboring countries.

Security sources did not deny the suspicion but cautioned that "the process of confirming that the dead body we have is the same as that character who has been posing as Shekau is ongoing. He is definitely a prominent terrorist commander. I don't want to say anything about this yet please."
Another high ranking military source said that the resemblance between the man killed and the one seen in recent videos posted by the sect group is quite striking, citing his facial marks, beards and teeth as some of the striking resemblance features.

Military officers say the Defence Headquarters will address the nation after a full investigation of their latest discovery has been done.

Meanwhile the Defense headquarters say five members of the sect group surrendered their arms to the Nigerian troops yesterday, pleading for mercy. They said some captured members of the sect group are helping with useful information regarding future planned attacks by the sect.

Politics / Katsina Governor Reportedly Orders Student Detained For Criticizing Him On Faceb by GoodieGreat: 2:24am On Sep 22, 2014
A student of the National Open University of Nigeria, Abdulmalik Sa’idu, has been languishing in a police cell for over 20 days on the orders of the Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema, for posting details of an alleged fertilizer scam in the state on his Facebook wall, Premium Times reports

This was disclosed to Premium Times by Mr. Sa’idu’s family and lawyer. Abdulmalik was first invited to the Katsina Government House on August 28 by a phone caller who claimed he had a message for him. But when Abdulmalik arrived at the governor’s office, he was promptly arrested, handcuffed and taken to Batagarawa Police Station just outside the state capital, Katsina, and detained on the orders of Mr. Shema’s aide-de-camp, Shehu Koko, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP.

According to his father, Maiyawo Sa’idu, while the young student was not charged with any offence, he was accused of cloning the governor’s phone number and using same to call the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affair, Sani Makana, with instructions that Mr. Makana deposit N3 million in his account. Mr. Sa’idu said his son was innocent. He said if indeed Abdulmalik cloned the governor’s number to dupe a commissioner he wouldn’t be tricked to come to the Government House to be arrested. “I think they are trying to frame him. I know my son cannot clone the governor’s number and call a commissioner to put three million into his account,” Mr. Saidu told Premium Times.

He said Abdulmalik was arrested because he posted details of an alleged fertiliser scam by the governor on his Facebook page. Mr. Saidu said prior to his son’s illegal detention, some officials of the state government had warned his son to desist from criticising the governor on Facebook. On one occasion, the General Manager of Katsina State Road Maintenance Agency, Jamilu Umar, threatened to pay N2 million to thugs or policemen to kill Abdulmalik if he doesn’t stop criticising the governor publicly, Mr. Saidu said. Governor Shema’s Chief Press Secretary, Sani Malumfashi, rejected repeated calls made to his mobile phone after this reporter told him he was calling about Abdumalik’s case.

Mr. Sa’idu said he is worried about the wellbeing of his son after relatives were abruptly stopped from seeing him a week into his being detained. “For the first week they used to bring him out to me. He would eat in front of me and they would take him back to the cell but for more than 12 days now, we have not seen him. They told me that they have a directive from above not to bring him to me,” he said. “The DPO (Divisional Police Officer) told me they have a directive from the Government House not to bring him out for his family or anybody in Katsina to see him.”

According to lindaikeji, Akin Ajayi, a Kaduna based lawyer, who is helping the family on the case, said the DPO of Batagarawa Police Station told him he had order from above not to release Abdulmalik on bail. “I spoke to the DPO of the Batagarawa Police Station and he said he cannot do anything because it was an order from above,” he said.

Mr. Ajayi said as a lawyer, the governor should realise that he was breaking the law by holding the boy beyond 48 hours on a “frivolous claim.” “The governor is a lawyer, his deputy is a lawyer and the attorney general is a lawyer and they all know that it is wrongful of them to arrest someone and keep him in detention for more than 48 hours on a frivolous claim that the boy cloned the governor’s number and wanted to collect N3 million and some other concocted allegations which are not proven. And they now kept the boy incommunicado. His family cannot reach him, and these days because of the security situation in the north, he could be killed,” he added. Mr. Ajayi warned that if Abdulmalik was not released he was going to send a petition to the National Human Rights Commission and the Inspector General of Police. The DPO of Batagarawa declined to talk to Premium Times after he was asked on whose orders Abdulmalik was being held beyond the 48 hours stipulated by law.

The Police PRO, Abubakar Sadiq, also refused to return several calls after promising to find out the details of the case.

Politics / Orji’s Son Sues Sun Newspaper For N5bn by GoodieGreat: 12:31pm On Sep 12, 2014
The first son of Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia State, Chinedu Orji, an engineer, has sued The Sun Newspapers Limited, owned by a former Governor of the State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, claiming N5bn damages for calling him “a terrorist.”

Briefing journalists on Thursday in Umuahia, a member of the legal team for Orji’s son, Chief Chukwunyere Nwabuko, said the libellous publication was contained on page 21 of the March 10, 2014 edition of The Sun Newspapers, which reads that, “it is not a secret affair as his terrorist activities in the state are fully documented.”

The counsel said the former governor had been using his media outfit to publish malicious and libellous articles against Orji as well as “his son, who does not even hold any position in government.”

He gave the suit number of the case filled at Abia State High Court holding at Ohafia as HOH/5/2014, adding that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Livy Uzorukwu, is the lead council of Orji’s legal team.

According to punch, the three-point claims by the plaintiff include, “The sum of N5bn as damages for libel; an unreserved apology to be published in at least three editions of the Daily Sun Newspapers; and an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, their agents, privies, servants and associates from further writing, printing and publishing of the said libellous matter or a similar one against the claimant.”

Nwabuko further said that the Presiding Judge, Justice Anthony Chioma, had already granted an order for the defendant to be served out of jurisdiction.

The matter will come up for hearing on September 22.

Romance / The Differences Between The Boy You Date And The Man You Marry by GoodieGreat: 4:44pm On Sep 11, 2014
When you’re dating a guy, it’s easy to think he’s perfect. You’re in a love haze, so be careful because there are definite differences between the boy you date and the man you marry. It’s true that people can change, you’re young and having fun at this point in your life, it’s okay to date around and have flings, but before long you’re going to want to settle down, so make sure you do it with a quality man, not an immature boy.

1. The boy you date asks you to “hang out,” which involves less commitment than a date. He wants to have fun with no strings attached.
2. The man you marry asks you out on dates and is clear about his intentions with you. He wants to be with you and wants you to know where you’re headed.
3. The boy you date talks with you about people you know from your past, or pokes fun at that guy at the bar, or only shares funny stories because he can’t connect on a deeper level.

4. The man you marry can hold a conversation with you about books, movies, music, and other common interests. This makes for a more substantial relationship in the long run.
5. The man you marry can handle your attitude and talk you down from a ledge. This is especially important when you have major life crises or a bad day at work.
6. The boy you date calls you mean and immature names to make himself feel like a winner.
7. The man you marry fights fairly. He doesn’t call you names or use physical force, no matter how angry he gets.
8. The boy you date cares "too" much about looks, and will tease you for looking sloppy until you fix yourself back up to his standards.
9. The man you marry understands that everyone has good and bad days as far as looks go, and won’t hurt your feelings or love you less if your weight fluctuates or you have a bad hair day or forget to shave for awhile.
10. The boy you date will expect to have things done for him because that’s what his mom did, and that’s what other girls have done for him, and he doesn’t have to take care of himself.
11. The man you marry will know how to take care of himself: how to cook, clean, do laundry, pay bills, and more–because he’s already a man. It’s important for people to have this figured out before they’re ready to marry, which is a great way to tell what type your guy is.
12. The boy you date doesn’t want to meet your friends and family because he just wants to be alone with you all of the time.
13. The man you marry wants to hear stories about your friends and family until he can meet them and get to know them himself, Lifehack tells us.
14. The boy you date well, you’re too embarrassed to take him to meet your parents, not that he’d ever bring it up himself.
15. The man you marry wants to meet your parents, and impresses them when he does.
16. The boy you date is always the one you fantasize about marrying, because he’s cute and all you do is have fun together (until the first big blow-up…).
17. The man you marry is never a sure thing. You hem and haw over if he’s right, if you should settle down with him, if your relationship can make it long term.
18. The boy you date doesn’t listen to you or fully engage in conversations. He nods while you talk, then changes the subject or just tells you what you want to hear.
19. The man you marry cares about what you have to say. He wants to know your thoughts and opinions on anything from major issues to tiny moments from your day.
20. The boy you date runs at the first sign of trouble because it’s too much drama for him, and he doesn’t want anything tying him down.
21. The man you marry sticks with you through tough times because he’s committed to you and the relationship, and wants to see it through to the end.
22. The man you marry pays when he takes you out, even after you grab the check and insist five times that it’s your turn to pay.
23. The boy you date never gives you security. You don’t know how he feels or what he’s up to when he’s not with you, and your friends might even have money riding on how long you’ll last.
24. The man you marry will make you feel secure. You’ll always know he loves you, you’ll be able to trust him, and you’ll know that you two can make it through anything.
Finally, you need God's direction to find the right person cus' we have alot of woff in sheep's clothing...you can take that to the bank.

Sports / Oscar Pistorius May Be Found Guilty Of Manslaughter; What The Judge Said by GoodieGreat: 3:54pm On Sep 11, 2014
The judge didn't find Oscar Pistorius guilty of murder but from what she said this afternoon, it looks like she's planning to find him guilty of manslaughter. Whether it will carry a prison sentence remains to be seen. Below are some of the things judge Masipa said this afternoon;

*He was negligent
*He could have run to the balcony and screamed. He could have called security.
*He was reckless, acted in haste and used excessive force
*He had other options but chose to use a loaded gun
*He could have run to the balcony and called for help like he did after the shooting
*He could have called for help in less time it took to shoot through the door.
*He had reasonable time to reflect and think
There was no explanation why Oscar didn't call security before arming himself and going to the bathroom.

*His conduct could be explained by looking at his past. But that does not excuse his conduct.
*Growing up in crime-riddled environment with a paranoid mother is just an explanation not excuse
*Many South Africans grew up in crime-riddled environment, they don't go about killing others
*The test for negligence: weather a reasonable person would have foreseen the reasonable possibility of the consequence.
*Defense said conduct of Oscar was brought about by several factors like lack of burglar bars on windows

According to lindaikeji, the court was adjourned and will resume at 9.30am tomorrow...

Politics / Nigerian Teachers Threaten To Strike Over New Resumption Date by GoodieGreat: 3:21pm On Sep 11, 2014
The Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, have threatened to go on a nationwide strike if the Federal government does not shift the date of resumption as well as put in place measures that would protect their members from contracting the deadly Ebola virus while teaching in schools.

Speaking in a telephone interview with Punch, the National President of the NUT, Michael Alogba, said the union had taken a decision not to allow any of its members go into any school to teach if the eradication of the deadly virus has not been scientifically and medically proven.

"In any sane society, decision such as this will not be taken until the government and all stakeholders have met and discussed the issue at stake and are sure that the nation is scientifically and medical free from the scourge. But this is not the case in our country. When they arrived at the early October 13 date, they wrote us and we agreed with their argument but when this new date was given, they did not because of the influence of some powerful school owners who put pressure on them (Federal Government) to announce the September 22 date. Anyway, we have written to tell them that if the Federal Government does not shift the date and provide all necessary safety measures in schools before Monday next week, all NUT leaders will meet in Abuja by 9am on Tuesday to decide our fate by ourselves. Though I don’t want to preempt the outcome of the meeting but as teachers who have families and who should protect our future, I mean our students, we will shun the classes; we will call for strike. What kind of government is this, don’t they know that children can never be as hygienic as adults? Don’t they know that the immunity level of children is not as high as that of adults? Why do you want to open schools when you have not cleared out the virus; when you still have about 400 people under surveillance in Port Harcourt and Lagos? You are aware of what is happening at the Obafemi Awolowo University. How are we sure that there is no primary or secondary school pupil that has had contact with an Ebola patient. It’s good that the NMA (Nigerian Medical Association) has spoken and we have told them too that we would not cooperate with them. That is why we are going to take a drastic action on Tuesday to protect ourselves and our children. I can tell you that we will shun schools; we won’t cooperate with them. In other words, we will embark on strike.” he said

He warned that if by next Monday, September 15th the Federal Government had not extended the new date, the executive council would meet by Tuesday 16th September where a drastic decision would be taken.

Meanwhile after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja yesterday the Health Minister said there was no going back on the resumption date. According to him, there was no scientific basis for school resumption date to be postponed

"First unlike other countries, there is no community transmission of the disease in Nigeria; not one yet. But we have taken precautions, what we are doing, we may as well have said everybody should just be moving about, but we are taking precautions. There is no scientific basis for school resumption to be postponed. There is no community transmission of the disease in Nigeria. That is what separates Nigeria from other countries. It is what I call irrational fear; we don’t need to be irrational about this.” he said

The Nigerian Medical Association as well as the House of Representative Committee on Education have spoken against the new resumption date.

Politics / Court Freezes Dangote Brother’s Accounts With 20 Banks by GoodieGreat: 11:15am On Sep 05, 2014
A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered 20 commercial banks in Nigeria to dishonour all withdrawal cheques from Mr. Sani Dangote, younger brother to Alhaji Aliko Dangote, and his companies, Dansa Foods Limited and Bulk Pack Services Limited.

.punchng, According to Justice Okon Abang, who made the order on Thursday in a bench ruling, said
the order would subsist till September 11, 2014, when the court would entertain all applications in a suit brought by Union Bank Plc against Dangote and his companies.

The judge also ordered all the banks involved to, within five days of the interim order, file affidavits declaring the defendants statement of accounts with them.

Union Bank had taken Dangote and his companies to court over alleged refusal to liquidate about N5.2bn loan granted them since September, 2008.

The bank, through its lawyer, Mr. Chukwudi Enebeli from the chambers of Mr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), had instituted suits seeking an order of mareva injunction to restrain all the defendants’ bankers in Nigeria from allowing them withdraw funds from their accounts pending the determination of the suits.

The banks named include Access, CITI, Diamond, Ecobank, Enterprise, Fidelity, Keystone, Mainstreet, Skye, Wema, Heritage, Sterling, Unity and Zenith banks.

Others are First Bank, First City Monument Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Stanbic IBTC, Standard Chartered Bank and United Bank for Africa.

In the affidavit in support of its suits, Union Bank Plc urged the court to urgently grant the mareva order because in a bid to evade payment of the loan, Dangote had been making frantic efforts to deplete the funds in the accounts of his companies, and that the bank’s investigations revealed that the defendants had started diverting the funds to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Canada and Switzerland.

One Olufunmilola Ayoola, an official of the bank, who deposed to the bank’s affidavit, alleged that the failure of the defendants to liquidate the monumental debt had negatively affected the Nigerian economy, a development which the bank claimed necessitated the suit.

According to Ayoola, Union Bank Plc has been having difficulty in extending credit facilities to small scale businesses, which in turn would have helped in boosting the nation’s economy and salvage the country from its present malaise of corruption and underdevelopment crisis.

The bank stated that the funds, which Dangote and his companies failed to pay, were capable of going a long way in impacting positively on the nation’s economy.

When the matter came up for hearing on Thursday, the motion could not be heard as counsel for the defendants informed the court that they had filed objections challenging jurisdiction of the court to entertain the suit.

Out of all the banks, Diamond and Zenith appeared before the court on Thursday and explained that Dangote was equally indebted to them.

Zenith Bank specifically said Dangote was indebted to the bank to the tune of €7m.

In view of the defendants’ objections contesting jurisdiction, the judge said the matter would be adjourned till September 11, 2014, to be able to take all the applications.

The judge added, however, that there was an urgent need to preserve the res in view of the allegation that the defendants were about to move the funds abroad.

He said, “In line with Order 28 Rule 2 of the rules of this court, an interim order is hereby made restraining the banks from allowing the defendants to operate their accounts with them, especially honouring withdrawal of funds.

“I think the dictate of justice demands that a preserving order should be made to preserve the res (subject matter) of this suit.”

Abang, however, ordered Union Bank to file an undertaking that it would indemnify the defendants in the event that the freezing order ought not to have been made.

Politics / ‘i’ve The Capacity To Transform Nigeria For The Better’- Rochas Okorocha by GoodieGreat: 1:49pm On Sep 03, 2014
Information nija reports that Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State weekend, said that he is seriously considering the option of taking a shot at the Presidency, following pressure from indigenes of the state.

Okorocha, who stated this while fielding questions from journalists in Owerri, the Imo State capital, equally boasted that he was sure to record victory for the All Progressives Congress, APC, if he is chosen as the party’s flag bearer ahead of the 2015 general elections.

The governor described the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as an embodiment of unprogressive minds who
have taken the country several years backward because of what he called poverty of vision.

“I am considering taking a shot at the Presidency because the pressure is too high and I believe I have the capacity to transform our country for the better”, Okorocha said.

He gave a graphic account of monies accruing to some states from the federation account in the past three years pointing out that “only N179 billion had so far accrued to Imo State”.

Continuing, Okorocha described it as “a sharp contrast to the intimidating and unbelievable figures that accrued to such states as Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Delta and Lagos States”, adding that over 60 to 70 percent of the federal allocation to Imo, went into recurrent expenditure.

After brandishing what he called “the score card” of his administration, Okorocha insisted that he had through effective and judicious use of the lean resources, salvaged the state from stagnation.

He, however, denied allegations that his administration has no respect for rule of law and due process in the award of contracts and pleaded with Imo people to shun unwarranted criticism of his administration.

Politics / Stop Using Your Newspaper To Rubbish My Administration, T.A Orji Warns Kalu by GoodieGreat: 1:43pm On Sep 02, 2014
Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State according to reports, has warned his predecessor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, “to stop running down his administration using his (Kalu’s) paper as a conveyor belt”. Orji, who took exceptions with a media report credited to Anambra-born billionaire politician, prince Arthur Eze, alleging that “Abia stinks”, accused the ex-governor of using his medium to “twist
the truth and propagate falsehood”.

Dr. Uzor Kalu is the owner of The Sun Publishing Limited, publishers of The Daily Sun newspaper.

Briefing journalists yesterday in Umuahia, the state capital, Commissioner for Information, Eze Chikamnayo, said billionaire politician, Prince Eze, was quoted out of context by Kalu’s paper in his bid to further rubbish the efforts of the present administration to reposition the state.

According to Orji, the Anambra billionaire, who spoke during the Abia @ 23 celebration, was only expressing his dissatisfactions with the deplorable condition of the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway, and never referred to Abia internal roads as misrepresented by the said report.

“From what Arthur Eze said, it was obvious he was voicing his concern about the state of the Enugu-Port Harcourt express way since he drove in from Enugu and passed through the Okigwe section of the highway which is in a very terrible state”, Orji said.

Orji noted that even members of the Abia State House of Assembly had recently passed a motion calling on the Federal Government to speed up the repair of the highway which has been on slow pace, adding that he had also been positively engaging the FG on key developmental projects in the state.

Orji said it was unpatriotic of “the former Governor to use his paper to turn Arthur Eze’s candid remarks to mean that Abia stinks”, a comment he said Eze had denied when contacted.

Orji contended that his administration had made remarkable success in infrastructural developments as well as improving the standard of living of Abia residents.

According to the governor, his predecessor in office ought to be a shining example of patriotism and warned him to desist from “his campaigns of calumny against the state government or we will be forced to use every legal means to call him to order”.

“It is only obvious that Kalu is intimidated by the towering achievements recorded by the current administration in Abia, a feat which could not be achieved in his eight years of maladministration”, he added.

Fashion / The Agony Of A Nigerian Fat Girl by GoodieGreat: 12:28pm On Sep 02, 2014
See this article written by Jennifer Ogoo Okolo...guess you'll like it.
"The Fat girl ends up miserable year after year. The society has neglected the fuller woman. This has resulted to fat girls feeling depressed, left-out and downcast. The average big lady spends most of their years in solitude, angry at themselves, the
society and even their shadow. Many are being laugh at, ridiculed, jilted, abused and sent back indoors where they are depressed and even get fatter. The society is such a big nightmare for this group of people which is saddening."

When they go for shopping which is a very beautiful and fun experience for almost every lady. But for the fat girl, it’s a rather sober experience. In many cases, sizes are deceptive to the extent that a size 12 dress will be tagged size 18. She has to through every cloth in the store before she finds what fits her. Sometimes, she ends up not seeing any flattering outfit. Again, the sadness begins.

Then she turns to her tailor to make a good dress for her. A beautifully styled dress she saw in a magazine page. The tailor makes it, it’s still not flattering. Sarcastically, the tailor says, “I find it difficult sewing for fat girls, it is too hard”. Again, the sadness begins.

Her soon-to-be-married best friend calls, “Wendy, will you be one of my bridesmaids”? “Don’t answer of course you will”. She is excited.“Will call you up later so we go choose the dresses with the other girls”. Her heart drops. Shopping bridesmaids with the other girls, she knows will be a huge nightmare because she is the “fat girl”. While shopping, The saleslady says, "We don't have your size, so here's the biggest we do have," and she gives it a try. Of course, it never fits. Her underarm fat is spilling over, her back fat is folding over the waist, and she can't get the thing to slip over her butt. But it looks beautiful on everyone else! And she is left feeling guilty for being more than a handful. Again, the sadness begins.

At NYSC orientation camp. The fat girl is handed her dress bag. She opens it. The kaki trouser is as small as a size 6’s whereas she is a size 18. “Ma’am, dis kaki is too small for me, can I get a larger size”, she says to the platoon mistress. The lady murmurs, “Exchange with someone else”. (lol, we’ve all experienced this). And she looks around, no one has her size. Most of other corpers, she may ask will reply saying, “NOO!!! I no carry orobo size”. Everyone laughs at her. Again, the sadness begins.

Every fat lady go through post-traumatic dress disorder. It is the condition that occurs when a person, usually female, feels disappointed and traumatized while leaving a clothing store. It could happen when she views old photographs and asks herself "What the hell was I wearing" It could also be the traumatic stress she feels between the moment she post a picture on the Internet and the moment somebody likes it or responds. Fat people go through this stress all the time and the society is not being fair at all. 80% of Heart-related illnesses which fat people suffer are because they spend most of their years depressed, not just about their size but because of social prejudicial.

What makes a fat girl traumatized while shopping?

1. She finds it difficult to buy good fitting outfits?
2. She feels upset when she can’t find cute cloths in her size.
3. The fashion industry ignores the fat girls.
4. Shopping for fat girls is frustrating.
5. It is difficult to find well-fitted outfits for fat girls.
