ure very right. this thing calls for extra vigilance and proper caution. I didnt lose much money cos i entered early and left early. i did Acorns IPO early last year and heavy money was sent into it. u wanna ask me why?
The placement was done for less than N3 and recently SEC just approved the IPO for Q1 this year. guess how much its gonna be listed
N20!!!. even if its just a million i dropped, im sure u can do a mental calculation of how much that is. My organisation even gave loans to staff to buy. Those are the kind of calculated buys i do.
I did GTA too and im still waiting for when they will be listed.

It may interest you to know that only the oil and gas sector had growth last year (propelled by the downstream), almost all other sectors didnt grow (banking inclusive) if the O&G grew by 25% and a major coy that is aspiring to become and integrated energy company is being sold for N3, then thats what they call a calculated buy

ill be expecting ur IV man
My guy i go extend 1 to u and also if u wan invite any other person. As per Acorn, based on the listing price as u talk don't u think it is too expensive. though d oil and gas industry na where the pay dey. But remember oil demand don dey reduce and in turn e go affect exploration activities. I read a piece on the company sometime i think last month abt the founder. The company dey operate for the sample industry as japaul oil. So my brother if work like dat fine. Just take ur profit and move on. Except ur in it 4 d long run

@ Goodness
Thanks for the tips chief,i'm working on them, but i wont mind knowing those "undervalued prospects" you talked about

@ All nairalanders
Please we need brilliant investment/business ideas, after all the stock market is not the only way to make money. I'v got some money to invest now and im open to new ideas
@sleekdoc
my oga i go give u just 3 stocks make u research further. 1. Guinness Nigeria Dividend yield: 7.48%, forward P.E ratio: 8.65, Industrial Ave P.E ratio: 10.6 2. GTBank Plc Dividend yield:9.82%, forward P.E ratio: 5.65, Industrial Ave. P.E ratio:10.3 and 3. Flourmills Nig Plc Dividend yield:4.39%, forward P.E ratio: 4.44, Industrial Ave. P.E ratio:12.5. Going by the numbers provided these stocks are cheap and dey have very sound fundamentals. But like i said 4 u to enjoy good returns on these equities ur investment horizon should be between 3-5 years considering current market sentiment.

Please, wat are the odds of insurance stocks already below 1 naira to go further down, im thinking of buying big into these stocks.
Im thinking it can only go up, i know i sure as hell may be wrong!
Your views will be most appreciated,
@sleekdoc

The insurance sub-sector has been and still is one of the hardest hit sectors on the stock exchange. Based on its current price level i would want to believe they are now undervalued but during the public offer era most of those stocks were issued to investors at overvalued prices. I see a couple of undervalued prospects now. I would like to advice dat b4 u plunge do some kind of research on the companies u intend to buy using the criteria i  have listed below:

Read the companies most recent financial report (Annual Report)

Compare current quarterly earnings with corresponding period in prior year ( www.fsdhsecurities.com )

Compare current annual earnings with prior yearend (www.fsdhsecurities.com)

Earnings growth rate of 25% or more

What growth rate in earnings has been in recent years?

Is expansion speeding up or slowing down.

Investigate the companies product/service.

About Management and their shareholding in the company.

Shareholding structure

High and increasing return on equity

Don't expect much in terms of dividend payout. Your target should be capital gains. Investment horizon should be put at 2- 3 years. But if ur target capital gain is hit in a short period sell and look for some other equities to invest in. Caution is the watch word. Invest wisely not just because they are cheap.

My guy i don learn my lesson. i just have to stick to my principles. i will be hosting a free web seminar on personal financial planning soon to emphasize the importance of having a plan in place before investing in the stockmarket. when i put everything in place i go send u an invitation. I know dis market slide will continue for a while until investor confidence picks up again. My guy can u imagine buying GTB for N11.26 (Monday's closing price) and it pays N 0.95 dividend. Na 8.44% dividend yield be dat. Den just add 13% capital gain na approximately after everything cool 20% total return be dat for 1 year oh. See oceanic bank and fidelity dem dey seriously undervalued. Rumour dey say N 1.30 per share for Oceanic Bank and dat Intercontinental Bank go experience so hard times cos of some monies invested the the stock market by the bank itself and add dat to loans granted to customers u can now imagine.

Fitch (The U.S based credit rating agency) don warn nigerian banks as regards to dividend payout couple dat to the NDIC warning as regards to some of our banks dem health. The word na cautious optimism. Currently i dey look at some serious growth equitie outside banking.

@tkb

I really sympathize wit those of us dat got into d market @ the wrong time. I made 1 or 2 blunders in terms of equities i purchased (Transcorp). I purchased this equity based on the business it was supposed to have gotten involved in at dat time (Oil Exploration, Tourism,NITEL and Oil refining). Boy was i wrong, no sooning the government changed everything came crashing. They started losing everything. I lost abt 70 -80% of the funds i invested in that equity when i bailed out. My guy na now i go take this investing rule of thumb serious a company must have at least 5 yr financial record b4 that company should be considered as an investment. Checkout Transcorp now infact dem don lose their only serious money spinner NITEL.

Content in bold refers, I do not want expert advice and certainly not from you.

Since you stated that if I wanted expert advice that I needed to pay for it would it then be ok to conclude that the rubbish you put down above is just what it is - rubbish since no one has paid you for it?

Content in blue refers, sorry I don't do stocks, I have never done stocks and never will. I will allow people like you who claim to be experts and yet you are losing money to be doing it.

I am glad that a lot of Nigerians are beginning to see stocks as gambling and that is the point I am making. There are Nigerians that borrowed heavily to make profits based on nonsense people like you spread everywhere and the reality on ground now is teaching them real lessons.

@tkb417,

With every new reply you give you come across as a complete inconsistent poster so I will not be wasting time on some of these inconsistencies that you have surprisingly not noticed even though you are the one making this contradictory statements.
@Afam
I will not respond to ur post .My continued response to u will only degenerate and ruin the purpose of this thread. Pls i neva offered to give expert  advice like u just said. I would rather u stick to the purpose of this thread and stop making investing look like some orchestrated scam. And please stop taking things said on this forum personal and resorting to using abusive languages. I think i have had my fill wit u. Let me get back to topic of this forum. I had pulled out of the market since june of 2008 and stayed out when i couldn't find undervalued stocks to buy. I only started entering the market again in november. I saw the bubble brewing when prices of some newly listed equities started making fantastic gains immediately without any financial records to back the price movement. Infact i started advising my clients to pullout from the market then and put their funds into FG Bonds. I made some silly investment myself in Transcorp, though i have liquidated @ some significant loss. I made dat investment on the back of the purchase of NITEL and the Port Harcourt Refinery by Transcorp. Now my making some loses will not make me turn around and start saying things that not true about investing because in the not too distant past i made also substantial money from this same stockmarket. It all boils down to every investor reviewing his/her strategy. It is not always a win - win situation in all business venture.

@tkb417
u tend 2 understand wat i am talking abt becos ur an investor. Now i understand wat u wrote abt Afam.

@ Afam
Mister if u want expert advice. U pay for it. The true value of a company has nothing to do with the daily fluctuation of its share price. The share price is just d reflection of investor mood.The true value of a company has to do with the long term growth/survival of the company. So investing has to do with the long term. Now wat do u call somebody that bought the shares of companies like Livestock feeds, Ellah lakes, Lennards and the likes. These companies had either been moribund and their share prices weren't move or were loss making ventures for a long time and yet their equities price moved astronomical during the stock market boom and compare that with someone that invested in the equities of a company like Ashakacem and u now tell me both of them are gamblers rite. Who is more at risk of losing money? If most of u had entered the market with a long term view u would nave seen the current meltdown as an opportunity to buy really sound companies at give away prices. See Companies like, UBA, 1st Bank. Union Bank Ashakaccem, WAPCO, Guinness, Flourmills and the likes. My broda everybody is entitlted to his or her opinion. U don't expect me to accept ur opinion becos u got burnt gambling. i was in the market den, i am in the market now and i will still be in the market for as long as i live.

Afam:
The content in bold refers, it is even more than that. Some banks were actively promoting a scheme where they agree to fund up to 40% of the total amount you want to invest in shares. That 40% is given to you as loan. This is a fact.

For those that have tried to divert attention from the core issue raised in my first post on this topic I will summarize my position.

1. Shares don't come with any guarantees hence it is gambling

2. You do not have any control over the performance of the company you are buying into

3. Companies you buy into do not owe you anything. Put differently you are willingly dashing the money to the company and hoping that the company makes money and provide some to you as dividends

The statements above I believe are simple to understand and basic common sense should help here.
I guess u don't understand d difference between gambling and investing. I will be happy to differentiate for you. INVESTING:to spend money on something in the hope of a future return or benefit AND GAMBLING:the practice of playing games of chance or betting in the hope of winning money. from this simple definitions how does investing in shares sound like gambling except u were one of does that went into it with the intention of gambling. No viable business venture comes with a money back guarantee.Try oil exploration, but more companies are still going into the business. In investing u do serious research before u buy any stock so that u buy fundamentally sound companies that will stand the test of time (First Bank has been around for over a 100 years). So if u didn't do ur research ur a gambler. I agree with u that companies u buy their shares owe u no explanation because ur a gambler but to real investors they owe some explanation. That is why investors in cadbury sued the company in regards to the fraud that took place @ the company. That is why we have shareholder associations.

The principal rule about investing in stocks is don't invest more than you can afford to lose. How can people be investing a huge chunk of their savings or even borrowing money to invest? Even by the purportedly lax lending standards in the West, I'll be astonished if a bank lent an ordinary individual money to invest in the market.

Like any bubble, once every Tom,privates and Harry is interested in investing, you should know the market is peaking. I believe it was   Rockefeller that said he knew trouble was brewing when his shoe shiner started talking about investing in the stock market and he took the prescient decision to get out before the 1929 crash.

It's a learning process, the pain caused by the losses will teach Nigerians about the downside risks and help check future bubbles . . . .  . until the next lot of suckers.
All u have said is rite. But i must beg to disagree wit u on the issue of investing. U don't invest money u can afford to lose. U invest money dat u will be needing in future. I guess u meant dat one can speculate wit money he/she can afford to lose. Dat was wat must people did. 90% of the people dat entered the capital market were speculators and had no knowledge of wat dey were getting into.

Guys,
I posted a topic Nigerian investors and the herd factor. i would encourage us to read it. The major reason the current meltdown has affected us has always been the same reason that has always been associated with Nigerians and it is good old GREED join am with WETIN DEY REIGN FACTOR. Every tom, dick and harry went into the market for just one simple reason and that is to turn a profit overnite.

How person go talk say him go borrow money from bank(Market for short term funding) and invest same in the Stock Market (Market for long term funding). Investing in the stockmarket is like every other business. One doesn't venture into business without proper research. Abi, anybody go just commot go buy moto without checking the moto out. When person know about P-E ratio him go feel say him don sabi how to analyze stocks.

And Nigerians also like wanting something for nothing.The current meltdown is simple a correction and when the market is done with its correction only the true investors will be left standing. There is a difference between speculating and investing. Anybody way wan speculate make him go Las Vegas or play the currency market.

And for those wey dey say stockmarket investing na kalokalo. I say to u continue to bask in ur ignorance. Life itself na kalokalo.

Business › Nigerian Investors And The Herd Factor by Goodness07(op): 8:34am On Jan 09, 2009
Dear Nairalanders,

Merry Christmas and A happy New year in Arrears. Welcome to a new business year. I would kick off this year by condoling those of us that got ourselves burnt in current market meltdown. It is quite dishearten that the stockmarket correction or rather the global financial crises has taken a very bad toll on the Nigerian investing public. Any discerning investor should have seen it coming and would have taken precautionary measures. Like every thing nigerian we like to follow the herd without proper research and planning. So long as it is the in thing and can generate high returns overnite with less stress they are in. We tend to forget the principle of gravity. That everything that goes up must i repeat must come down. I must say that everything in life is a risk. Be it business or investing even the very life we a living is a risk becos their is no guarantee that one will wake up the next day. I say this because 70% of people that in invested the stock market during the booming period did so with having any plan what so ever talk less of research the investment they were going into. We as nigerian have 1 single problem and it have has to do with our finances and having a financial plan. I will list out must mistakes we make as investors which in turn affect our personal finances:

1. Procrastination about financial decisions.
2. Having goals that are general and unrealistic.
3. Not having a plan.

Why i have listed these items is becos must nigerians don't have a personal financial plan.Why must people got their fingers burnt in the recent financial market meltdown was becos they invested funds meant for short term goals in a long term market. Some even went the extra mile to borrow short term funds from banks to invest in the stock market and got themselves into troubled waters. I will have to stop here for now. I will love to hear from fellows nigerians on this issue.
