Worryingly: If what Fayose claims is true, the thinking essentially becomes: “I am Yoruba, Tinubu is Yoruba, therefore I should not allow myself to be used against him.” and this is precisely the kind of rotten politics that has kept this country stagnant or reteogressive and the kind of reasoning Nigeria needs to outgrow.
A citizens political obligation should not be to protect a president because they belong to the same ethnic group or religion. It should be to protect the interests of Nigerians and the constitutional order, regardless of who occupies the presidency.
Mind you, there is nothing inherently wrong with Yoruba solidarity, Igbo solidarity, Hausa solidarity, or any other form of cultural affinity. The problem begins when ethnic identity becomes a political criterion for determining who deserves support, criticism, opposition or protection.
Sometimes I wonder if the black man is really r3ady for representative politics or whether the British left too early.
