In a bid to fight the increasing terror attacks in northern Nigeria, the Nigerian Army has announced the deployment of 20 war dogs to the north-eastern part of the country.

This detail was made on Wednesday, 10 December, 2014 by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, when he commissioned a newly constructed block of Kernels for War Dogs at the Army Headquarters Provost Dog Platoon, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Barracks, Abuja.

The army chief informed that the 20 dogs are specially trained on explosives detection, search and rescue operations and other areas in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency.

He added that they have so far been deployed in various operational theatres in the North East.

Minimah also noted that a Dog section was established under his predecessor, Lt-Gen. Azubike Ihejirika (rtd) in 2012 in order to enhance the operational efficiency and effective of the service in the fight against insurgency.

This is coming few hours after 6 people, including 2 female suicide bombers, were killed in a bomb blast that rocked a textile market in Kano.

Seven other people were reported to have sustained injuries and were rushed to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano.

It was gathered that the incident caused chaos and panic among the people, who immediately went on the run for safety.

The bombing comes days after a ghastly attack on Kano Central Mosque claimed hundreds of lives.
Also, a female suicide bomber was Monday, December 1, arrested at Dinshe neighbourhood near Kurna, in Kano, while allegedly attempting to launch an attack on a primary school in the area.

President Goodluck Jonathan and former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, had ordered the Nigerian Armed Forces, especially the military, to crush Boko Haram members and maintain security in the country.

The order was given on Tuesday at the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Annual Conference 2014 in Ibom Le Meridien Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

A man escaped death by the whiskers after he was mauled by a pack of lions after jumping into their enclosure at Barcelona Zoo
Justo Jose, 45, remains in intensive care with serious injuries after he climbed into the lions' den, where he was attacked by three of the animals for about half-an-hour before he could be rescued.

Yesterday afternoon, Jose appeared by the lion enclosure at the zoo, dressed in military uniform, climbed over railings and began scaling one of the walls in the enclosure before being picked up by one of the animals and thrown into a pit.

The 45-year-old was rescued around 30 minutes later, covered in scratches and bite marks. He was taken to the city's Hospital de la Vall D'Hebron where he remains in a serious but not life-threatening condition.

According to Spanish reports, Jose climbed over fencing to enter the enclosure as horrified tourists watched on.
Footage of the bizarre incident shows him scaling one of the enclosure's walls before being tossed by the leg into a pit by a lioness.

He emerged some 30 minutes later after fire fighters used hoses to fight the animals off of him.

Abuja was penultimate week hit with the horrific story of a man who poured a substance suspected to be acid on his wife and himself after a heated argument.

Leadership's David Aduge-Ani who has been following the event writes on new developments since the sad incident occurred. Going back to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada-Abuja to visit the latest victim of an acid attack was not easy. Not because one was not sympathetic but because one couldn’t be sure of what to expect on getting there.

However, it was unavoidable and necessary for two reasons: First to show sympathy to the victim and give some sort of support.

Secondly, to hear what could have really transpired; what would have driven a man to harm his wife, and himself, that way. The strangeness of what man can do in a rage has always been baffling; unimaginable things have happened from maiming to killing in the name of anger.

The story of Romania and Maria Eze is not different. On reaching the hospital, it was revealed that Mr Romania Eze had died on Thursday, the day after the incident while the wife, Maria Eze who had been unconscious since the incident has been taken to her hometown in Enugu State. The couple both hailed from Udenu local government area of Enugu State.

Making further enquiries over Maria’s condition, LEADERSHIP learnt that she had not opened her eyes since the incident while it was speculated that the acid bath may have damaged her eyes. This is in addition to the burns on her head, face and other parts of her upper body. Penultimate

Wednesday, the middle-aged man who before the incident lived with his wife in Gwagwa, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), was reported to have poured a liquid substance suspected to be acid on his wife and later poured some on himself, inflicting severe burns on both of them.

It was gathered that the couple had been living happily with each other as they both owned a shop in the area where they sell bambara nut in bags. The couple had embarked on storage of the produce early in the year so as to have bountiful sales, especially in the yuletide season. They had gone as far as borrowing from individuals and groups to support their plans.

Trouble started between the couple when Romania noticed that the number of bags of the commodity did not match the number he anticipated. It was at that point that he began to enquire and discovered that his wife had allegedly been wittingly hiding parts of the sales from the investment in her private account.

Louis van Gaal has confirmed that Angel Di Maria is likely to miss Manchester United's clash against Stoke on Tuesday, though club captain Wayne Rooney could feature following Saturday's 3-0 victory over Hull.

A riot broke out this morning in Durosinmi Eti Axis of Lekki Phase 1 in Lagos between Hausa commercial motorcyclists and Yoruba shuttle bus drivers.

The riot occurred as a result of an attack carried out by Hausa commercial motorcyclists on Yoruba bus drivers who drive some of the estate’s shuttle buses last night.

The entry route into the estate was blocked by rioters armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons, leaving many stranded outside, causing traffic along the Lekki Expressway.

“It all started yesterday when the Hausa Okada riders attacked the bus drivers, they shattered the windows of their buses and injured a few bus drivers. This morning, the drivers with the help of some men caught some of these okada riders and beat them to a pulp”. an eye witness disclosed.

The reprisal attack was said to have led to the burning of several motorbikes. ‘They can’t come here and attack us, we will find you and kill you’, one of the rioters was quoted to have said.

In early November, the Lekki residents association placed a ban on commercial motorcyclists, making public announcements in the estate, explaining that both okada riders and passengers will be arrested if caught.

The whole incident might well be looked upon as an ethnic clash between Yoruba and Hausa tribes; most bus drivers are mainly of Yoruba extraction while the okada riders are of Hausa extraction.

A man called John killed his father, Mr. Ikor Itumo in Ndufu, Ikwo local government area of Ebonyi State for being too old.

Mr John who is reportedly suffering from mental problems beheaded his father and a search party led by youths in the area was immediately conducted leading to the discovery of the cutlass the suspect used.

He was later apprehended by the youths and handed over to the police for interrogation into the circumstances that led to the death of the deceased.

The suspect said: “My father had become older than my late grandfather, therefore he deserved to be killed. He was no more useful to the society because of his old age.”
