Achraf Hakimi has confirmed that he is expected to stand trial following a rape allegation made against him in France.

A woman accused the Morocco international of sexually assaulting her at his home in Paris in 2023, when she was 24 years old. Hakimi has strongly denied the claim.

Authorities in Nanterre, located on the western outskirts of Paris, opened a preliminary investigation in March 2023 after the complaint was filed.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Hakimi said that the mere presence of an accusation can now be enough to lead to a court proceeding. He described the situation as unfair both to those wrongly accused and to genuine victims, adding that he intends to face the process calmly and is confident that the trial will bring clarity.
His legal representative also confirmed that a trial has been ordered, stating that the defense is approaching the case with determination and is prepared to present its arguments in court. A hearing date has not yet been announced.

Ryan Routh, the man convicted of attempting to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump during an incident at a Florida golf course in 2024, is scheduled to be sentenced on Wednesday, February 4.

Routh was found guilty in September on five criminal counts following a chaotic trial in which he chose to defend himself. Throughout the proceedings, he was repeatedly warned by the presiding judge, Aileen Cannon, for disregarding courtroom rules. One of the convictions relates to attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate.

The court will now decide his punishment, with prosecutors calling for a life sentence. They are also pushing for a terrorism-related sentencing enhancement, a move Routh is expected to contest during the hearing.

An attorney retained after Routh’s conviction said his client insists on speaking freely in court and does not always follow legal advice. He added that Routh’s statements during sentencing are expected to be unconventional and only partly focused on the case itself.

Prosecutors argued in court filings that Routh’s conduct warrants the maximum possible penalty, stating that he spent months planning the attack and showed a willingness to kill anyone who stood in his way. They added that he has displayed no remorse for his actions.

Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Routh had surveilled Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course and nearby Mar-a-Lago residence for weeks. Investigators recovered disposable phones containing online searches related to Trump’s movements, upcoming events and local traffic monitoring systems.

Authorities also found a handwritten note in which Routh admitted to the plot and offered a financial reward to anyone willing to carry it out if he failed. Investigators said there was no proof he had access to the money mentioned in the letter.

On September 15, 2024, Routh allegedly positioned himself near the sixth hole of the golf course, armed with a vintage military-style rifle and using armored plates attached to a fence for cover. Trump was reportedly golfing just one hole away at the time.

More than 120 people have been killed after a series of coordinated suicide bombings and gun attacks rocked Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan, according to the country’s military.

Security officials said at least 33 people — including 18 civilians and 15 security personnel — were killed on Saturday, while responding forces eliminated no fewer than 92 attackers. Analysts described the violence as the deadliest single day for militants in the province in decades.

The attacks targeted both civilians and high-security facilities, including police stations, a prison, and paramilitary installations. Authorities said the level of coordination and scale of the assaults were unusual for the region, which has long been affected by insurgency. Over the past 48 hours, security forces reportedly killed at least 133 militants across the province.

Pakistan’s military and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi accused India of backing the attackers, an allegation New Delhi has consistently denied and did not immediately respond to on this occasion.

The outlawed Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attacks, which involved suicide bombings, armed raids, bank robberies, arson, and assaults on police infrastructure. The group also released propaganda footage showing female fighters participating in the operations.

Provincial authorities said several planned attacks were foiled by security forces. The violence followed military raids earlier in the week on two militant hideouts, where 41 insurgents were killed in separate clashes.

Balochistan’s chief minister said security forces were still pursuing fleeing militants and claimed hundreds of insurgents had been neutralized over the past year. A court in South Korea has sentenced former First Lady Kim Keon Hee to one year and eight months in prison after finding her guilty of receiving bribes linked to the Unification Church.

Iran has carried out the execution of a man accused of spying for Israel, according to reports from the country’s judiciary-linked media.

The individual, identified as Hamidreza Sabet Esmailpour, was executed by hanging in the early hours of Wednesday after being convicted of espionage-related offences. Authorities said he was found guilty of collaborating with Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, by allegedly transferring classified documents and sensitive information.

Esmailpour was arrested on April 29, 2025, and his death sentence was upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court following what officials described as the completion of all legal procedures.

A 30-year-old Brazilian woman has been taken into custody by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja after allegedly attempting to smuggle a large consignment of heroin into Nigeria.

The suspect, identified as Ingrid Rosa Benevides, is said to work as a private security officer in Brazil. She was arrested on Friday, January 23, 2026, shortly after arriving in Abuja from Doha on a Qatar Airways flight, following intelligence-led surveillance.

A search of her two checked-in suitcases reportedly uncovered 21 factory-sealed packs of Brazilian coffee. The Supreme Court has formally brought an end to the long-running murder case involving a former military aide accused in the killing of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, citing prolonged inaction by the Lagos State government.

Five military personnel and one police officer lost their lives after armed attackers ambushed troops attached to Operation FANSAN YAMMA, a Joint Task Force operating in the North West, along the Bingin–Kekun–Waje–Gusau route in Zamfara State.

The attack took place on Monday, January 19, 2026, as troops were returning from a series of coordinated offensive operations in Birnin Magaji and Anka areas of Zamfara State. During those operations, three suspected terrorists were arrested, while four others were neutralised.

In a statement released on Tuesday, January 20, the spokesperson for Operation FANSAN YAMMA explained that the troops came under attack while responding to a distress call linked to a reprisal assault by terrorists. The ambush occurred at Gidan Wagni.

According to the statement, personnel of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Joint Task Force North West, displayed exceptional courage, discipline, and resilience during the ambush along the Bingi–Kekun Waje–Gusau road.

The statement noted that the ambush followed successful offensive missions conducted between January 17 and 19, 2026. In Texas, a former Disney Channel star was taken into custody.

Kidnappers have killed Abu Momoh, the younger of two brothers who were abducted in Auchi, Edo State.

The two siblings were reportedly taken from their residence along City Pride Road in the Igbira Camp area on January 1, 2026. One of the victims, Abu Ibrahim Babatunde, is a medical doctor, while Abu Momoh was his younger brother.

After the abduction, the kidnappers allegedly contacted the family and demanded a ransom of ₦200 million for their release.

The victims’ father, Tahir Momoh, later confirmed that Abu Momoh had been killed. He said the young man’s body was discovered on Monday morning and that he was buried the same day.

“It is true that he was killed. He was the younger of the two brothers, and he has been buried. The elder brother is still in the hands of the kidnappers. This is a very painful moment for us, and we pray that his brother will be released alive,” he said.

A video circulating online showed that the victim was killed near Orley River, close to the Igbira Camp axis of Auchi. According to a source familiar with the incident, Abu Momoh may have been shot while attempting to escape from his captors.

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has dismissed reports claiming that he was targeted in an American attack on Nigerian soil, describing the allegations as false.

In a statement shared on his verified social media page on Sunday night, the Islamic cleric said misleading information was circulating online suggesting that he had made such claims. He stressed that he never said he was a target of any foreign attack and had not even considered such a possibility.

Gumi added that he is currently at home with his family and living without fear, intimidation, or anxiety.

He explained that the reports may have stemmed from remarks he made during a mosque sermon, where he referenced a past security incident linked to Boko Haram. According to him, he had been informed in August 2012 that the group planned to assassinate him, but the attempt failed after an explosive device detonated near his residence, killing the two individuals involved.

The head of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has once again confirmed the commission’s strong dedication to organizing free, fair, and trustworthy elections in 2027. He mentioned that the groundwork for these elections is already being laid to improve Nigeria's democratic procedures.

In his message to INEC employees across the country to celebrate the start of the new year, Amupitan called it a time for renewal and a key moment for strengthening the commission’s structures in preparation for the next major elections.

Looking back at the commission’s work in the previous year, the INEC head praised his team for their commitment, especially for the successful running of the Anambra State governorship election that took place soon after he took charge.

He said that this event proved that with a strong sense of discipline, unity, and professional behavior, the commission can safeguard the integrity of the voting process and increase public trust in elections.

“We have shown that through discipline and teamwork, we can protect our democracy.
As we move into an exciting yet challenging year, we must thoroughly prepare for the upcoming FCT Area Council elections, as well as the off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states,” he stated.
