Hushpuppi: Why police may not release Kyari to FBI


There are clear indicators that the IGP Intelligence Response and Monitoring Team Commander, Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, will not be handed over to <a href="https://mirrornigeria.com/2021/07/fg-reduces-price-of-gas/">the</a> US for criminal prosecution.

It was <a href="https://mirrornigeria.com/2021/07/rush-to-us-now-huriwa-to-kyari/">reported</a> that the legal battle to extradite Kyari to the United States for trial for his suspected role in a $1.1 million Internet fraud would be fierce.

Already, the DCP has <a href="https://mirrornigeria.com/2021/07/john-terrys-possible-next-club-revealed/">been</a> advised to constitute a strong legal team to challenge and possibly frustrate the extradition request of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in court.

A Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal complaint lodged at the United States District Court in California had listed Ramoni Abass, alias Hushpuppi, and Kyari among six suspects indicted in a $1.1m international fraud conspiracy.

The other suspects include AbdulRahman Juma (Abdul); Vincent Kelly Chibuzo (Kelly); Rukayat Motunrayo Fashola (Morayo); and Bolatito Tawakalitu Agbabiaka (Bolamide).

Kyari, who is popularly known as ‘super cop,’ had been under fire since the FBI Wednesday released a 69-page court document showing that he had been under investigation by the FBI for his alleged link to Hushpuppi, who had pleaded guilty to fraud.

In the case marked 2:21-cr-00203, USA VS Abba Alhaji Kyari dated April 29, 2021, the FBI asked a US District Court in California to order the arrest of Kyari for 10 days.

The US Department of Justice in a statement said Hushpuppi admitted during interrogation that he paid bribes to Kyari, to have one of his rivals arrested and jailed in Nigeria following a dispute over a $1.1m fraud involving a Qatari businessman.

According to the FBI, Hushpuppi asked Kyari to arrest fellow fraudster, Kelly Chibuzor Vincent, after both were involved in a dispute over the $1.1m loot.

It was stated in the court document that in September 2019, Kyari travelled to Dubai and was picked by Hushpuppi’s driver.

Sunday PUNCH gathered on Saturday that Kyari, who had earlier denied the allegations in a hastily written post on Instagram and Facebook, had been ordered to respond officially to the FBI indictment.

Our correspondent gathered that Kyari was given a few days to tender his defence.

Sources explained that the DCP was also advised to get a strong legal defence team to assist him in fending off the FBI.


A source said, “The battle promises to be long and full of legal fireworks but it is not certain that the police authorities would readily hand over Kyari to the US for trial. Will the FBI allow any of their officers to be extradited to Nigeria for criminal prosecution?

“Kyari has been advised to get a vibrant legal team to fight the extradition request and the team is expected to start working immediately.”

Recall that the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba had ordered a review of the allegations against the IRT commander.

The Police Service Commission had also said that it would determine Kyari’s fate and not the police leadership.

The commission noted that Kyari may face dismissal or demotion, and prosecution if found culpable in the <a href="http://Facebook.com/MirrorNGR">fraud</a>.

INEC projects 20 million new voters as CVR begins

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will commence Continuous Voter Registration today (Monday) in preparation for the 2023 general elections.

Remember that the commission added 56, 872 new polling stations around the country.

It had also granted accreditation to 31 organizations to monitor the CVR, with 20 additional applications pending.

According to the commission, at least 20 million additional voters will be registered during the registration period, which will last over a year and end in the third quarter of 2022.

INEC had stated it will send 5346 officials to 2673 registration centers, threatening to prosecute anyone who gave fake information during the procedure.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC, also stressed the need of personnel security.

“We are concerned about security difficulties in some sections of the country,” he stated. The commission intends to send 5346 personnel to 2673 registration centers. What happens if one of these employees is kidnapped?

“Our responsibility is to conduct credible election and also protect our staff. The security agencies are also facing challenges and there have been concerns that INEC officials might be target of criminals.”

He said the commission had also made robust provisions for Internally Displaced Persons who might have misplaced their Permanent Voter Cards due to insecurity.

The INEC boss stressed the need for massive advocacy and publicity to ensure that citizens are familiar with the new polling units ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“The success of the exercise depends to a considerable extent on citizens’ awareness through voter education. There will be new registrants, requests for intra-State and inter-State transfers as well as the replacement of voters’ cards as provided by law.

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi: “How I will wipe away Aso Rock if my child is abducted is unbearable"

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a well-known Islamic cleric, has threatened to lock Aso Rock if his child is kidnapped.

He said this in an interview with BBC Pidgin on Friday.

On Wednesday, the cleric urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to pay the abductors of Greenfield University students who were abducted in April the N100 million requested by the abductors.

On Friday, Gumi addressed the issue once more, saying that the federal government would choose between saving students’ lives and paying the N100 million.

“Life versus material; that is how you will look at it. It is the absolute responsibility of the government to protect lives. Now we have lives or N100 million at stake and these lives of 17 innocent young children,” he said.

“I can’t imagine if my child is there. I can never keep quiet. I will go and lock Aso Rock, if my child is there. They are my children too.

“What is N100 million? So, what I’m saying is, free these children then the field is open for you to whatever action you have. It is between bandits and N100 million. I do not want the struggle between bandits and lives.

“This is just simple logic. It does not require any rocket science. How can you play with lives? You can play with your money, but you can’t play with peoples’ lives. They just went there to study.”
