While urging all and sundry to utilise this window of opportunity to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), she said the task of creating a new Nigeria which her party represents is a collective struggle for all which should be supported by any rational Nigerian irrespective of party , ethnic or religious affiliation.

Barrister Helene Mbakwe asked Nigerians to take their destinies into their hands and vote wisely during the elections so as to elect people with their interests at heart and not money bagged politicians who are only after their own selfish interests.

“You need to do new things to see new things happen. I’m just one person just like every other person but I want to go and see what I can do to see that Nigerian is made anew. It is a tall order I know but we shall succeed.

“I’m going there to bring lots of succour to my district in Anambra Central. There are the aged which we leave behind at home; they need to be included in the government. There is the youths, several cadres of them, the employable and the unemployable. The unemployable, we need to find something to channel them unto something that will make them employable.

“School system has changed now that it is no more what it used to be when we were schooling. We need to change a lot of things in our educational system and also beef up some of the structures we have in our educational system so that children will have the desire to go to school.

“It is education that will change a lot of things going forward. We also need to care for the physically challenged people because they need to be included in this country. There are the mothers also who fight lots of battles to have their head high. We need to give the mothers opportunities by empowering them and making them stay empowered.

“Under my stewardship, come 2023 and beyond, Anambra Central will look forward to households and individuals feeling the impact of a new Nigeria. They will have relief and welfare to make them relax a little from where we are coming from and from the dream we have going forward” she said.

Later, the Anambra state Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh called on journalists to always bear the society in mind while discharging their duties as the watchdogs of the society as their reportage is capable to build or destroy.

Professor Chuma-Udeh while commending the efforts of journalists in nation building, acknowledged their powers to build and to destroy through their reportage, encouraging them to always abide by the ethnics of the profession so as to effect positive change on the society.

The Education Commissioner enjoined journalists to keep to the tenets of the profession while also appealing to them to guard the peace and unity of the country jealously in the discharge of their statutory duties.

"Without journalists, we will remain in darkness. But, I advise you not to practice journalism at the expense national peace. As you disseminate information, be always on the path of truth," she advised.

The Chairman of the Anambra NUJ, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu and the Vice Chairman of the union, Comrade Ngozi Obileri thanked members of the union for maximally supporting them since they assumed office, encouraging them to continue to be professional in the journalism work, even as they prayed for God's blessings and protection on them in the remaining days in 2022 and the year 2023.

The Chairman of the council, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, had urged members of the Fourth Estate of the realm to remain the conscience and moral parameter of the society.

"Be careful with friendship. As journalists, you must know where to draw line of friendship because your friendship must not undermine the performance of your job".

In separate remarks, the Traditional Ruler of Umuawulu in Awka South Council Area, Igwe Joel Egwuonwu, his Osomala, Ogbaru Council Area counterpart, Igwe Chukwuemaka Awogu, and Anambra NUJ Patron and a one time President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo as well as President of Nkwelle Ezunaka Community, Chief Chris Eluemuno commended journalists in the state for their daily efforts towards reshaping the society for the good of the voiceless, reminding them the need to remain unbiased in covering the forthcoming general elections, as according to them the election will determine the future of Nigeria.

Speaking, the Chairman Organizing Committee for the event, Comrade Joy Mbachi and the Secretary of the Committee, Dr Njideka Ezeonyejiaku appreciated the event sponsors and members of the union for their supports in making the event a success, and used the opportunity to call on the general public to always support journalists as their contributions in societal development can not be over emphasized.

The event featured award presentation and installation of patrons of the union, among other things.

Earlier, Chairman on the occasion, Prof. Emeka Ezeonu, who is immediate past Resident Electoral Commissioner, of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Imo State, declared that the 2023 elections cannot be rigged.

Ezeonu urged Nigerians to get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) and perform their civic responsibility next year.

The ex-REC believes the Electoral Law as amended makes it impossible for rigging.

“BVAS approval has tightened the loopholes in card readers, making the electorate more confident that their votes would count,” he said.

Ezeoonu however urged journalists to always be professional in their reportage.

According to him, the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS and the electronic transfer of result are two measures taken to secure the integrity of the ballot.

He appealed to Nigerians to come out enmass to vote for candidates of their choice, even as he tasked the media to be alive to its responsibilities at this critical time of the nation's electoral history.

"You owe the society education, sensitization and mobilization. Journalists are critical to our survival as a people".

"I assure that nobody can rig the elections again. The BVAS is the best thing that has happened to the nation's electoral system. Your vote is your power. Come out and exercise it on the election day".

Speaking in the same vein, the traditional ruler of Umuawulu, Igwe Dr Joel Egwuonwu, on behalf of High Chief Dr Azubuike Ekweozor, one of the patrons of NUJ Anambra State Council, charged members of NUJ to report with love, bearing the good of Nigeria in mind at all times.

Highpoint of the event was the presentation of the 2022 Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna Award for Ethical Journalism, which was won by Alfred Ajayi of Radio Nigeria Purity FM Awka.

In her brief remarks on the award, the benefactor, Prof. Okunna, first female Professor of Mass Communication in Sub-Saharan Africa said she initiated it out of her love and passion for ethics and to encourage media professionals to value ethics which according to her is everything in journalism. She wants Journalists and media to be ethically balanced in it's reportage for a better society.

Responding to the award, the winner, Alfred Ajayi, described it as a dream come through.

"It's a long journey. It teaches me that there is time for everything. It's my turn today and I give God the glory".

"I particularly value this because it is coming from my own constituency, the NUJ. It's a fulfilment of a dream," he concluded.

Nairaland / General / Many Talents Decaying In Nigeria Due To Excessive Prayers - Archbishop Ibezim by Grace14156: 11:02pm On Aug 06, 2022
Many talents decaying in Nigeria due to excessive prayers - Archbishop Ibezim

The Archbishop, Province of the Niger, and Bishop Diocese of Awka Anglican Communion, Most Reverend Alexander Ibezim, has blamed over-reliance on prayers as major factor contributing to the loss of talents in Nigeria.

He decried that Christians no longer work hard due to the belief that God through fervent prayers can enrich humanity and make man prosper.

Archbishop Ibezim made this known while laying a foundation stone for the Administrative block and classrooms in commemoration of his 60th birthday at Mary Summer Vocational Institute, Awka, the Anambra State capital on Thursday.

Delivering his homily at the event, the Archbishop told Christians to shun laziness and embrace hard work to achieve success in life.

According to him, "True gospel is that which proclaims that you must work very hard in order to develop your God-given talent and potential. So many talents are decaying in our country today because of too much prayers.

"A Christian is admonished to work very hard. A child of God should not be lazy because Christianity is not a lazy religion or culture. We must know that the gospel is not only about preaching, it is also about doing and being actionable."

On the Nigerian situation, he said "too much prayer is spoiling our country, Nigeria. It is high time we got out in order to work. Our leaders are afraid of hard work; that is why today we see many people struggling to occupy positions of power because they see it as a place to rest."

Performing the foundation stone-laying of the classrooms and administrative block of the institute, Archbishop Ibezim said the purpose of establishing the institute was to proclaim Christ and to teach the students how to live and manifest wisdom for end time survival.

"The existence of Mary Summer institute is to train young people that are hardworking; to allow them develop their talents because time has gone when people think that individuals doing evangelism are lazy. Today, evangelism without hard work is not evangelism.

"We are in a moral relativity. The God we serve is the God of truth and so, we are not giving chance to pervasion of truth. That is why the church is taking time to build institutes like this; where our girls would be taught what is biblical and what will help them develop their talents to survive challenges of life."

Speaking further, Archbishop Ibezim said that "Mary Summer is a very important institute as obtainable in many universities of the world. We don't play with the future because it is important. We have created the ladder of climbing higher educationally, culturally and spiritually and the youths must climb the ladder to attain success."

He commended the director of the institute for her hardwork and dedication to service. He also charged the graduating students to put what they have learned in the institute to good use and shun all forms of prostitution and wayward lifestyle.

In her remarks, the Director of the Institute, Mrs Uche Emekwisia reminded that the thirty-two year old institute was built by the Mother's Union of the Diocese of Awka, Anglican communion.

She also admonished the graduands to be good ambassadors of the institute in the outside world, having acquired sufficient skills to survive in their line of endeavors.

Elsewhere in Okpuno, the Archbishop performed a foundation stone-laying of the Mount Zion International Retreat/Resource centre, Kamali Layout, Awka. The Archbishop said the centre will oversee the teaching and learning of the word of God, for personal meditation and for total wellbeing of human being.

The center will soon be a center of attraction in hosting spiritual events nationally and internationally as envisioned by it's founders.

President, Mother's Union, Women's Guild and Girl's Guild, Mrs Martha Chioma Ibezim, JP among others Clergymen and wives attended the event.

By Dilibe Michael

Mrs Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, The Anambra state Commisoner of Education has debunked a viral audio where she was heard abusing Job seekers during Teachers recruitment examination in Anambra state.

In an audio obtained by Metro Times correspondent, Udeh was heard saying
“Madam, you are an idiot. You mean the computers are doing what?

“I received a report by 12 noon that you people refused to stand in line. You refused to be identified. You mobbed and you were all trying to get into the hall at the same time. You refused to be disciplined up till this moment and you have the effrontery, you this stupid woman, you have the effrontery to call me on the phone to talk rubbish.

“Will you get out of my phone, you filthy thing! You really want to be a teacher? How will you tell your students to conform to instructions when you cannot stand line in line and move into the hall?

“You came for a test that will make you a teacher and you are behaving like a hooligan. Please, I have no pity for you and I have nothing to say to you.

“I received a report that they have already examined 1,400 out of the 2,000 plus we get there. So, your result is already made. Go home and find a place where people like you are supposed to be.

"You are not supposed to be found in the corridors of education. You are all hooligans! Thank you very much. I hope you understand me.”she said.

The viral audio had elicited nagative reactions from many residents of the state with many calling for her sack, but while responding, Mrs Chuma-Udeh, said the viral audio was cloned and edited conversation which she had with a supposed friend.

She said the caller was one of the teachers hired by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) during former Governor Willie Obiano's administration.

He brought up the matter of a man who was caught writing exams for his children, we discussed very informal because he was supporting the man for writing the exams for his children.

"I expressed my disappointment on the 68yrs old man who retired as Permanent Secretary for the State who was involved in writing exams for his children during the Anambra teachers recruitment examination, so the conversation and my harsh words was for the 68yrs old man.

I was totally disappointed as Minister of Education seeing 68years-old man writing exams for his three children who will become a teacher in the State.

She said also that the teachers were busy destroying properties during the examination exercise most especially in places like Unizik and Nnewi examination centers.

An NCE holders can be a teacher in Anambra primary schools while HND holders can be a teacher at the secondary school level, she added.

She said "Education is the backbone of every society, we must fight to get it right".

Ngozi commended Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for holding education very dear to his heart since his administration.
