meet the entry criteria for a bachelors or 1 year masters course in January 2023

Not Eligible for Edinburgh Napier University Scholarships

Two year Masters courses are not eligible for this scholarship. In addition, you are not eligible if you have discounted tuition fees from a partner university or are in receipt of another scholarship.


Application process for Edinburgh Napier University Scholarships

3. The Beacon Scholarship

Who is The Beacon Scholarship for?

This is another great scholarship for Africans that is very important . Up to 6 new Beacon Scholarships for University for a 3-4 year undergraduate degree are available each new academic year, one to each Beacon Partner University.

Candidates must be Nominated by their current School Head and once they have obtained an offer of admission to their choice of university, they will be invited to apply for a Beacon Scholarship for University.



Note: Beacon Scholarships are only available to students from KENYA, UGANDA, TANZANIA and ZAMBIA.

Please read carefully the Eligibility Criteria and all other requirements before registering (Note: study for a course of Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Sciences is excluded). There is strong competition for these scholarships, and shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an interview and full day leadership assessment.


ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA for The Beacon Scholarship

To begin the process of application for this great scholarship for Africans , a candidate must first register and download a Nomination Form which must be completed by the Head of their current secondary school.

The Nomination Form requires an endorsement that the candidate has strong academic and leadership potential, is a ‘Change maker’, and has the capability for successful completion of an undergraduate programme of study at a world-class university.



Once the candidate has an offer for entry into a Beacon Partner University, they will be invited to complete a full Beacon Scholarship Application Form and Financial Disclosure which will be sent to them.



Applications are then evaluated by the Beacon Equity Trust for evidence of leadership potential using the following criteria:

(a) Academic Excellence

(b) Achievement in Sport, Music or Drama

(c) Social Influence and Communication

(d) Citizenship.



An applicant must show through examples that they have helped those less fortunate than themselves, or have done work in the community, and are seen as role models.

Unselfishness, kindness and concern for others are key criteria for The Beacon Scholarship ,also scholars will be required to show continuing evidence of their efforts in these areas.



(e) ‘Change maker’

Applicants will also need to demonstrate, with examples, that they are a ‘Change maker’, i.e. that:



They have the capacity to ‘take people with them’ and
They are already making a difference now, not at some future point in time.


FINANCIAL NEED – DISCLOSURE REQUIREMENTS

In order for a candidate to qualify for The Beacon Scholarship for University, their Parents/Guardians/Sponsors must demonstrate financial need and undertake full and complete financial disclosure.



Parents/Guardians/Sponsors must be committed both financially and educationally for their child to complete an undergraduate degree as a Beacon Scholar.

An award of The Beacon Scholarship for University is for two-thirds of the total of: tuition fees, maintenance costs, plus an annual fixed allowance for compulsory surcharges and one return economy airfare to the Scholar’s home country only.



The Beacon Scholarship is aimed at Parents/Guardians/Sponsors who can demonstrate financial need but are able to fund at least one-third of total costs.

4. Beit Trust Postgraduate Scholarships

In 2021, the Trust awarded 18 Scholarships at British and South African universities, by means of generous academic partnerships with leading institutions.

Beit Trust Scholarships are for Postgraduate degrees only. They do not provide scholarships for undergraduate work and their postgraduate focus is on Master’s Degrees.

They do not offer scholarships for Ph.D. research ab initio. Only under exceptional circumstances, and for Beit scholars of outstanding merit, will the Trustees consider extending support to Ph.D. level.



The Trust does not consider applicants for MBAs.



The next round of Beit Scholarships to be awarded is for the academic year beginning September 2022 for universities in the UK; and January 2023 for universities in South Africa.


Eligibility Requirements for Beit Trust Postgraduate Scholarships

By Act of Parliament, the Beit Trust supports ONLY students who are nationals of Zambia, Zimbabwe or Malawi, who hold permanent residence, live there and/or intend to return to their country after their studies.



Applicants (except medical and veterinary doctors) must be under 30 years of age on 31 December 2021. Relevant experience of work after completion of a first degree is strongly recommended and will count towards the award of a scholarship.



Doctors and Vets must be under 35 years of age on 31 December 2021. They should have completed 18 months of internship, and a one-year, preferably rural, posting in Zambia, Zimbabwe or Malawi.



The Trust cannot consider applications from those who have already begun a course.



The Trust will only consider applicants with First Class/Distinction or Upper Second Class degrees (or equivalent) at undergraduate level.


What does a Beit Trust Postgraduate Scholarship Cover?

Fees, tuition costs and related academic expenses. These are paid by the Trust direct to the Partner Universities.
A personal allowance, index-linked in accordance with guidance from an independent authority, covering maintenance support.
Other allowances are paid for arrival, a laptop and departure.
Economy Class tickets are provided for the initial journey to the place of study, and on final return.
No allowances are paid for spouses and other family members or dependents.
The Trust will also address any expenses that may arise in 2022/23 as a result of residual Covid protocols.

How to apply for a Beit Postgraduate Scholarship

For UK Partner University applications:

Make your application for admission directly to one or more of the Partner Universities listed above, and only to those universities. Please apply via their websites, which will guide you.
Notify the relevant university, as part of your study application, that you will be approaching the Beit Trust for scholarship funding.
As long as the course/s you wish to pursue are available, you may apply to more than one Partner University at a time. Indeed, we recommend you do so, to increase your chances of acceptance, and to broaden the scholarship opportunities available.

The Research Administrator will initially be working in the research team of 3 ERC-funded projects, ‘The Global as Artefact‘, ‘Qualitative and Quantitative Social Science: Unifying the Logic of Causal Inference?‘ and

‘A New Noah’s Ark: Securing the Transfer of Ancestral Agricultural Knowledge Across Europe’s Changing Regions of Environmental Suitability‘, as well as the Mellon-funded project ‘Religious Diversity and the Secular University‘.



As the projects come to an end there will be the opportunity to move on to pre-award work as well as looking after the Fellowships programme and new grants.
