Ibime: He is a better striker than a midfielder at this stage.
Whatever improvement you think he needs to make as a striker, he needs double that to be a midfielder.
I actually think he is a good striker already. I saw some high balls come into him and I was expecting defender to flatten him and head it out, but time after time, he managed to get some good flick ons. He can run in behind, he can drop deep. He can't dribble but he can travel ok with the ball. Most importantly, he has composure to place his shot. I like strikers who don't just blast the ball but pick their spot. Iheanacho and Van Persie come to mind. They even have similar build, all left footed and all are converted midfielders.
Let's not forget the ultimate converted midfielder - Lewandowski.
I have not noticed the bolded, but I pray that is the case. Trust me, I like that we make what we have to work instead of going to look for what we don't know if it will work. Na so them say Werner go solve our striking problem and here we are discussing Havertz as striker. If Chelsea are not sure to get a complete striker we can keep managing Havertz as striker and see if he can work there. But if they have a good opportunity to land a complete striker, it is best they take the chance. He must not be a known striker. Can't scout's find players with no hype and make them shine?
Ibime: He needs to be isolated upfront as a striker where he will get the space to do all these
that is where he can make it, but still has some limitations. If we must stick with him as striker, then other attackers will need to step up with their goals contribution for when we meet teams that will seat back. Mount, Pulisic, Ziyech and Werner will really need to do more. 15 goals each from at least two of the above list will solve the problem, but the have not shown to be consistent in supplying the goals.
We sincerely lack finishers and real game changers.
omotola90: Peeps on this thread, we should all but agree that kai havertz is a game reader... He might be slow, he might not have that stamina, but he is a good lad
It is obvious that he is an intelligent player, but sluggishness will not cut it. How can you as a midfielder execute what you have in mind when before you trap the and turn the opponent already has it? The midfield is where every every happens, and the opposition is upon you from all angle. Any player in the midfield should have the sharpness to quickly turn away from opponents and quickly make something happen, not before you trap ball, dem don collect am. E no go work nah, especially in epl where the intensity is high.
Ibime: Havertz has done alright to make the ball stick in the air from what I've seen so far.
You just highlighted the characteristics a striker needs to be able to play all styles of football
I mentioned Arnautovic here who is strong, fast, tall, can dribble and run with the ball, all for £0, Havertz10 want comot my head.
Hope you know that Havertz has only played few matches as a striker, and many against non defensive teams. One he played against a defensive team he was hauled out as the second half started. Let's watch and see. He is already a Chelsea player, and I will be happy for him to prove me wrong. But from what I have seen, he has limitations for that position, and you know how it can be in England when you start to shine. Dem go test you. He has not yet been tested. Nobody don reason em matter for striking. We will know after the test. But if Chelsea have an opportunity to sign a complete striker, they should go for it. That's my own.
Again, you know how Chelsea sacks manager every now and then, so we need a striker that can play any style of football so that we don't have to be buying and selling players each time a manager is sacked. Look at how we are stuck with Jorginho and Alonso.
BlueAngel444: no, not really his strength is in finding spots and spaces, gabs to exploit, like a poacher. Problem na person way go find am with the right pass.
Check his goals, tight box, and he himself will even dribble and enter into tight spaces before he shoots, which is annoying.
Though he has the speed and does you say, Havertz can fit the false 9 profile just the way Kane became a striker for Tottenham.
Ibime: His hold up play is Ok if you ask me. He looks skinny but he knows how to lever his body with a man on his back
that is when the ball is on the ground. What of when it comes from the air. Remember, he is not a speedster like Werner. He is sluggish, which affects his dribble, (especially important in epl) so his game as a striker will be limited to making few touches and scoring. He can't carry the ball and a long distance beating one or two players to score.
For me, Havertz playing as a striker is just like Alonso playing as a striker. Havertz may just be a little bit better with strength and little pace.
Ibime: I don't support buying any 28 year old at £100m or even Haaland.
Left to me, I jejely allow Havertz keep developing in the striker role and will take Arnautovic on free transfer from China as someone I can rely on if Havertz chooses to be unfortunate.
Havertz as a striker will blossom against teams that play high line or come out to play, but if teams sit back, no chance, because his strength is in sneaking behind defence, and that would be difficult against defensive teams, and he does not have hold up play. We need a complete striker.
nihilistjnr: He wasn't almost 30 for the majority of his time at Chelsea.
Your body recovers and a different pace as you get older. Also the intense exercise he has to undergo to shift his burger induced weight will aggravate existing injuries, and then a vicious cycle starts, as his body begins to overcompensate to accommodate structural weakness and thus generate more injuries.
Ronaldo at 36 removed that coke from his front for a reason. You are what you eat... especially as a professional athlete
airmark: Many people have got Typhoid fever and survived but many also didn't. Use your brain next time.
A player got his ankle injured thrice, despite all the kicks he had received in Epl and international duties over the years, this fool just jumped from nowhere to spit rubbish. Lordfatcow.
The guy is just on a campaign of "Oppose anything Airmark says"
nihilistjnr: The weyrey knew that he had to be in shape but was eating buns anyhow, turning up to preseason looking like a woman god finally blessed with different kinds of fruit of all the wombs.
You can't defend this mofo based on fitness bro. His fitness issues are mostly self-inflicted.
I disagree. He has eaten burger all his career. He ate burger all his 7 years at Chelsea. He even fractured his ankle first while still at Chelsea yet he was still not getting injured everyday. It is not about his that entirely.
Jodera: 1... Walking off the pitch before full time cos a goal was disallowed is highly unnecessary and extreme. He's never the first that a legit goal was disallowed neither will he be the last.
2... Slamming the country's armband while walking out cos your goal was disallowed is a bad sign of disrespect. Not only is it highly unnecessary again, but it's also extreme.
3... Losing a knockout match and still slamming your country's armband again? Haba! He's a great guy and player, Yes, but he's a bad loser. It's very very unnecessary for him throwing his armband to the floor just cos they lost(esp against a good team). This is even the fact that they're the defending champion.
What kind of model is he showing if any small thing, the armband will fall to the ground? It's highly disrespectful, unnecessary and extreme.
I'm not sure it is about him disrespecting the armband, it is just him showing his frustration. If it was water bottle in his hand, he would have slammed it to the ground, too.
Jota and Bruno should be banned from national games.
Of all the attempts, how many were from inside the box? How many were big attempts? If person dey outside box dey take shot wey players dey block you go dey call am attempts. Those ones na for stats.
chic2pimp: Hopefully that goal brings Portugal out of their shell. Both teams came into the game with the same game plan. Sit back and Hope to hit the other team on the counter attack.
Yeah. And it made the game boring. But, you know, for a manager that wants to win, and playing against a quality team for both teams, you need to be Conservative. Belgium cannot affto leave spaces behind for Ronaldo to run into. That's suicide.
swiz123: I said he is a downgrade to Moses as a WB, not as a RB or RCB of which Moses is not.
You know James cannot attack and this is the direct corollary of this arguement to start with. You can say he used to spam crosses like Ziyech under Lampard and I will understand.
He doesn't take players on as expected like Lamptey does; he also doesn't run behind the defense line to receive a pass like Azpi would do. The only thing he does excellently well is passing the ball backwards, followed albeit my some distance man marking.
BlueMann: James' case is a bit of a curious one. I remember last season, he was making waves mostly because of his attacking play, with his crossing ability in particular catching the eye. That was the period when the Beckham comparisons came up (comparisons strictly in terms of crossing). I remember how fans used to blast the attackers for failing to utilize the fantastic crosses/cutbacks James played into the box numerous times.
Then, what many people weren't convinced about was the defensive aspect of his game.
So what could've happened? The back passing is undeniably obvious, and a bit frustrating at times. But when he does attack, he is a joy to watch. And the defensive side of the game that used to generate doubts, is now one of his biggest strengths.
James has the tools to become one of the very best in the game. Forget hype. Last season, his attacking play made the headlines. This season, it's his defense. I think he needs to find a balance, as he's now proven that he can attack AND defend.
Again, some have highlighted his physique as a sort of an issue. First off, this dude is mad strong. But then again, it seems his size/mass makes it difficult for him to zip up and down he flanks. If that's the case, then it's definitely something he can work on.
Me I still maintain faith in James, though he needs to address some issues.
swiz123: I don't want to stick around to find out. To win the league, we have to be consistent from start to the end. Nobody knows how competitive our rivals will be and any slow start could be catastrophic.
So my brother, oge adiro ichebe James.
How did you know that the one you want to sign will be better?
swiz123: A WB is a de facto winger, and the qualities he lacks on that position, just as you have identified, makes him mediocre at that position. No need sugar coating it.
I'd take that report with a pinch of salt if I were you though
James does not lack attacking qualities, that we have seen in the past. Something mụst really be wrong somewhere. We saw James under Lampard and his attacking was even better than his defending then.
