Snake Eyes hasn’t even hit screens yet and we’re already talking about a follow-up. To be fair, the G.I. Joe reboot is an origin story that tells the tale of the franchise’s enigmatic hero, Snake Eyes. It naturally leans into setting up the future.

“I think now that we’ve done him justice in his becoming, it’s seeing where he goes,” says Golding in answer to what he wants to explore for his eponymous character in the future. He’s chatting to Fandom ahead of the release of the latest big-screen G.I. Joe adaptation. “It’s seeing how good he gets — because it’s only up from here — but it’s also the relationships he makes. We’re yet to see Timber Wolf and we’re yet to see if there’s a romance that happens within the Joes, or whatever — those are slight nods from the comic book stuff.”

Timber, if you don’t know, is Snake Eyes’ wolf companion – a character we’d love to see brought to life in the rebooted franchise because, well, animals are good. Plus, he’s a loyal and highly effective sidekick. The Battle Cat to Snake Eyes’ He-Man. Romantically, Snake Eyes has been linked to G.I. Joe operative Scarlett – who is introduced in the movie, played by Samara Weaving.

“We’re excited to see how this film does and hopefully it does enough that people want more,” adds Golding.

There will likely be an appetite for more, particularly since the film does a decent job of setting up the next steps for some key characters in its closing moments.

Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow: A Troublesome Brotherhood

Snake Eyes introduces terrorist organization Cobra as the bad guys and spotlights the Arashikage clan, a family-like guild of ninjas who take in and train the titular mysterious outsider. The movie builds in plenty of mythology bringing a depth to the world we see on screen that we’re itching to know more about. Sitting down with the cast of Snake Eyes – Henry Golding; alongside Andrew Koji, who plays Snake Eyes’ ever-popular sometimes-foe sometimes-ally Storm Shadow; Úrsula Corberó, who plays Cobra agent The Baroness; and Haruka Abe, who plays new character Akiko – we asked them to take us deeper into the G.I. Joe screen universe.

Golding cites the way the film introduces Cobra as one of his favourite aspects: “It was done and was written in a way that it wasn’t in your face … which leaves you yearning for more and knowing the next [film] is just going to blow it out of the water and grow everything exponentially in the universe.” But he says it’s exploring the complex relationship between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow that is critical to the movie and whatever comes next. Golding is excited to explore a shared comic-book history that positions the characters as allies, then enemies, then allies again.

“When you watch the movie, you realise the strength of bond that they’ve built and that’s really important moving forward because you need to understand the mechanics of who they are as people, but also why it’s so intense and why it means so much to them. I think moving on from this movie, to be able to explore more of that but with different dynamics is the exciting part,” he says.

G.I. Joe fans will know that Storm Shadow winds up joining Cobra. However, given that Snake Eyes sees him building a brotherly bond with Snake Eyes and teaming up within the Arashikage Clan to fight a common foe – each with a different personal agenda – it’s interesting to know which side the fandom prefers to see him on. We polled our Joepedia community, and at the time of writing 65% preferred to see Storm Shadow – aka Tommy – on the side of Cobra. Boo hiss.

“You can’t have a yin without the yang,” agrees Golding. “I think this is probably the most troublesome brotherhood written in any element of comic books and one of the most iconic, so to have them waver once in a while and fight for the same cause, I love that. But you can’t have that if they’re both on the same side the entire time because that’s the excitement and the joy … You can’t have them on the same side. It’s not as exciting as when they do finally arrive together for a particular thing — that’s where it’s like, ‘Oh, my god, this is amazing!’”

In the comics, the relationship between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, as in the film, is complex — although we see Storm Shadow defect to Cobra, we do see the duo come together again. Storm Shadow actor Andrew Koji was delighted to hear the community’s verdict. “We can take that going forward,” he says, suggesting they won’t shy away from exploring the character’s darker side in future movies. Like the fandom and Golding, he also believes it makes things more interesting when Storm Shadow is aligned with Cobra: “There’s more turmoil, maybe, going on inside him. I think that’s maybe what is more interesting — the layers that you can do going into it.”

Koji adds, “Going forward, there’s a lot I’d be interested to know. The interesting thing would be to explore the shades of grey, not just the black and the white … the further he goes inside the conflict, the more conflicted and turmoiled he is — but I think he was brainwashed as well at one point. There’s a whole tapestry of stuff you could go into.”

Indeed – and with the MCU currently obsessed with mind control, we wouldn’t be surprised if the G.I. Joe franchise also went there. Somewhere else Koji would like to see the sequel switch up is his costume.

“I’d like to see him in a different look. I’d like to see him in the hood look, the bow, and arrow,” he says.

But who is the most important princess of them all?

Before drawing back the royal curtain, we’d like to point out that every Disney princess has admirable, teachable qualities, be it bravery, compassion, intelligence, resourcefulness, or – more likely – a combination of them all. 2018’s Ralph Breaks the Internet perfectly illustrates how each princess has unique skills to offer, which can be harnessed — and strengthened through teamwork, reminding us that sisterhood is everything — to triumph against almost all challenges.
In order for us to determine which princess is the most important, we’re going to explore the personal qualities that constitute the perfect Disney heroine, as well as their popularity and cultural impact. Oh, and by Royal Decree, we’re sticking to the official Disney Princess list – Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, and Moana – plus Anna and Elsa. Firstly, the 14-year-old who started it all – Snow White. While she might be seen as meek and mild by today’s standards, she set the world alight with her elegant big-screen debut. The main protagonist of the first ever feature-length animated film, Snow White was the star of not only the highest-grossing flick of 1938 but the most successful of all time – until Gone With the Wind came along a couple of years later. She proved that the Disney Princess formula worked, and set the standard for more female-centric fairytale retellings at the studio.

While Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, and Belle each brought new dimensions to the princess role, Jasmine was the next in the lineup to break significant new ground. The first character of colour to join the canon, Jasmine opened up the possibility of non-white cultures being represented in Disney Princess films. She may not be the main protagonist of Aladdin, but Jasmine’s shrewdness, beauty, and natural leadership pave the way for Disney Princesses of colour to be taken seriously.

Disney took another progressive step forward – perhaps later than expected – in 2010, with the first Black Princess, Tiana. This was particularly important for the studio’s domestic US audience, where almost a sixth of the population is Black. Many parents were thankful that finally there was a Disney Princess their daughters could see themselves reflected in, and it was about time. The fact that The Princess and the Frog is set in 1930s New Orleans, and not a fictional African land like The Lion King, makes Tiana’s story all the more vital for an American audience.

Pixar’s only princess, Merida, is a different kind of pioneer – she’s the first Disney Princess who doesn’t fall in love with a man. It took 75 years, a trip to ancient Scotland, and a different studio, but Brave finally took us to a place where a Disney Princess can fight for herself, and doesn’t need a prince to deliver her Happily Ever After. But did they ever really need that in the first place?

**Princesses Are Doing It For Themselves**
Disney Princesses are often painted with the ‘damsel in distress’ brush, and scorned for needing a man to rescue them, thus setting a bad example to kids. However, examine the evidence and all of the Disney Princesses are actually surprisingly self-sufficient. Even in the early films, contrived plot devices are the only way to take them down.

Think of Snow White, for example: when left in the forest to die, she finds herself a cosy cottage, installs herself in her new home, and manages quite capably to look after herself AND seven grumpy men. It’s not her fault that she’s given LITERAL POISON and only a gallant prince can save her. She was doing just fine until then. Fortunately, however, Disney soon dropped the ‘poison motif’ in favour of princesses who don’t need true love’s kiss to save their souls.

Beauty and the Beast’s Belle is surprisingly feminist, given that she stars in one of the most romantic fairytales of all. Dreaming of more than a ‘provincial life’ as a housewife, she steadfastly rejects the most handsome – if brutish – man in town, knowing that she deserves more. She craves knowledge and adventure, not a man to subdue her. Although she begins as the Beast’s prisoner, it soon becomes clear that only she has the power to break his curse, and only when she has the chance to fall in love with him of her own free will does she set him free. For once, the prince is at the mercy of the princess.

Pocahontas takes this new trope to the next level, by saving hundreds of men’s lives with her independent thought and strong will. Her romance with John Smith is on her terms, and she quickly asserts herself as the wiser of the two. By being willing to sacrifice her own life to save Smith, she schools two entire armies and stops the bloodshed. Even after all that, she still lets her man drift away overseas to get his wounds healed, knowing that her people need her strong spirit to guide them.

Mulan is one of the most independent princesses of them all – if you can even call her a princess. She’s a warrior, first and foremost. Selflessly taking her father’s place to fight for her country, she defies her submissive upbringing and endures blood, sweat, and tears to earn the respect of her comrades-in-arms. Her romance with Li Shang is just a footnote on her grand achievement of saving China from ruin — it’s even missing in the live-action remake.

Tiana is another princess who shows that finding romance doesn’t have to be the default dream of a Disney heroine. Already self-sufficient, she puts in the work to open her own restaurant, and nearly fulfills this dream completely by herself. Her unintentional amphibian adventure with Prince Naveen only serves to show that she can enjoy a loving relationship as well as achieving her professional goals. When Tiana and Naveen work together to earn the money to fund and build her dream restaurant, Disney shows a princess who goes after her independent ambitions, whose prince’s role is to cheer her on.

Marc Guehi has signed a five-year contract with Crystal Palace after joining the Eagles for £18 million from Premier League heavyweights Chelsea.

The 21-year-old defender impressed during two loan spells at Swansea City, and has now returned to Selhurst Park.

Guehi becomes one of former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira’s first acquisitions as manager of the Eagles.

“I’m very excited; it’s a fantastic opportunity for me to join such a prestigious Premier League club,” Guehi remarked.

“I’m really looking forward to getting started. With the new manager in place, the club is heading in a very exciting direction.

“There are a lot of good young players here, and obviously such a stable club with quality players persuaded me to come.”

Guehi was born in Ivory Coast but raised in London, where he joined Chelsea at the age of eight. With Eagles chairman Steve Parish thrilled about what the new recruit can provide, the England Under-21 cap now confronts a new challenge.

Parish remarked, “We’re happy to have signed Marc for Crystal Palace.”

In their attempt to sign Max Aarons this summer, Arsenal will face competition from Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.

The Gunners have long admired the Englishman, who has led Norwich to Premier League promotion twice in the last three seasons.

They were demoted at the end of the 2019/2020 season, but they are determined to stay in the Premier League this season.

If they had hoped to do this with Aarons on board, they may have to devise a new strategy without him.

This is because, according to Sun Sports, Arsenal is interested in signing him, and he wants to play for a good team.

The Canaries would prefer to keep him, but according to the article, he is attracting interest from all around Europe, with Bayern Munich mentioned as one of his suitors.

Hector Bellerin could leave Arsenal this summer, and the Gunners have plans to replace him.

After several delays thanks to Covid-19, Wonder Woman 1984 will be released very soon, with international theaters beginning to play it on December 16 before the film opens in theaters on December 25th in the United States – while also debuting for HBO Max subscribers on the very same day, in a game-changing release plan Warner Bros. is embarking on going into the next year.

Fandom was among the first outlets to actually see Wonder Woman 1984 this week – we’ll have a full review soon on an episode of SJU, though I can say I was very happy with the film – and to speak to director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot about the highly anticipated sequel, which moves the action to the 1980s, as Wonder Woman takes on Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and Barbara Minerva, AKA Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) .

The first big action sequence in the film takes place in a classic 1980s mall, and Jenkins noted it was quite an experience standing inside it, “Remembering how it felt. The world was just like a playpen. It was all so light and funny and fun and easy. It was so interesting to go back to that feeling.”

That sequence is a notably upbeat and fun one by design. As Jenkins explained, “The way we’re telling these Wonder Woman films, she’s got emotional stakes pretty quickly so the thing I kept saying to the studio and everybody was, after ending the first movie, I’m craving that Spider-Man-like moment where you’re just delighting in your superhero at their best. A lot of superhero movies have those moments at the three-quarter point because they don’t have big emotional stakes, so how they beat the villain is how you get that.”

Jenkins said that given the film’s character beats as it goes on, “We have to open up in this thing so you can just enjoy how amazing she is and how easy this is for her. So it became the place we can do that… I needed there to be that badass, flying around [sequence] – I always loved that part of the Spider-Man movies.”

That mall sequence also served as important character introductory beat for the film’s star, because when we meet Diana in the film, decades after we last saw her in World War I — and in the midst of saving the day — Gal Gadot said, “This is what she lives for. She gave up on making friends because they’re going to find out she’s immortal and they’re going to have to leave and she’s going to have to say goodbye. This is all she has. So honestly, this is fun for her. Like, okay, some people are trying to rob a store and take over a mall? No problem.” Dealing with some common thieves, Gadot said, “She’s dancing. She’s not even fighting. This is what she does.”

As for filming that sequence, Gadot exclaimed, “It was very delightful for me to shoot, to shoot the whole sequence, and even to take over a mall! We took over a mall from the 80s that was standing there and we dressed it completely so you literally feel like you’re back in the 80s and it was super fun to make. “

The new Pixar film, Soul, tells the story of Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx), a middle school music teacher who seems to be on the cusp of finally achieving his dreams when he gets a gig to perform with an acclaimed Jazz performer – only to promptly fall into a manhole. This sends Joe — who refuses to take the path into the true afterlife — on a metaphysical journey to “The Great Before,” the place where human souls are honed and find their path before going to Earth. As Joe desperately tries to return to his body, he meets the cynical 22 (voiced by Tina Fey), who isn’t impressed by anything she’s heard about life as a human and has done all she can to avoid ever leaving the Great Before.

Soul will be debuting Christmas Day on Disney+, one of the many films produced with a theaters in mind that had its release plans dramatically change thanks to Covid-19 (it will still play in theaters in countries without Disney+).
