Gospel music often arrives with polished production and big stages. Andrew Odion’s debut album My Journey arrives with something rarer: unfiltered life.
In a wide-ranging interview on Garden City Radio, the artist—also known as Herranga Odion—spoke candidly about the long road from high-school choirs to a ten-track project filled with personal stories of waiting, surgery, a sick child, and the hard lesson of stopping trying to “help God.”

From Choir Boy to Storyteller
Odion has been singing gospel for as long as he can remember.
“I’ve been into gospel… singing in choirs, singing in some groups right from high school,” he said. “It’s kind of been there. Growing up, I grew into it and started singing in the choir and some gospel bands. It’s a passion… a calling that the Lord has given unto me.”
Even while holding a regular job (which he still does), music remained central. Writing, however, came first.
“I was more into writing… my area was writing down the lyrics. I’m someone that likes to play with words. The journey for me is that I love to tell stories. So why not tell your stories with the Word of God, or with life experience?”
He keeps journals everywhere—especially on his phone. Inspiration often arrives while driving. He texts the idea to himself so he won’t forget, then later shapes it into song.
One track, “Hands Off, Let God Do His Work” (with a pidgin version that says “make Him do His work”), comes directly from that struggle.
“We all pray and say, ‘Oh God, I put it in Your hands,’ and then I want to go help God. That is me… trying to help God, and yet we say we walk by faith. All my efforts become futile until I get to the point I say, ‘Okay, I’m just dropping it at Your feet.’”

The Turning Point Came in Recovery
Though songwriting had been part of his life for years—including time with a group called New Rems in Portugal—the decision to release an album of his own came during a forced pause.
After surgery, Odion spent more than a month recovering, unable to work.
“Nothing aside from studying the scripture, watching TV… I couldn’t move. So I started putting them together. That’s how it all started.”
He describes the timing as divine rather than ambitious.
“I always had a dream of doing this, but I’m talking about twenty-five, thirty years later… If God has given it to you, it’s timing. You can’t help God.”
His first recorded project dates back to college in the mid-1990s with the Goldmark Band, when cassettes were still the format. Backing vocals and choir albums followed. My Journey is the first time the stories are fully his.

The Album Is a Collection of Lived Moments
Every song on My Journey is personal. Odion waited until the lyrics were finished before the title arrived.
“Because it was stories… something just left it in my head and said, ‘This is your journey… it’s an experiential story.’”
Two tracks stand out as especially raw.
“Suddenly” was born from the medical challenges his first son faced as a newborn.
“Spent a lot of money in the hospital… living by faith, trusting God to heal him. Day and night, he was tiring… The way God answered the prayer was unexpected. It was suddenly from nowhere… how God provided the resources, how He brought people in. It was a sudden thing that blew my mind.”
His son is now in his twenties. The experience taught Odion something he returns to often: God’s ways are rarely the ones we expect.
“Let God (Let Go and Let God Do His Work)” grew from the same season.
“It was me trying to help God. Even though we say by faith I know You’re going to do this… God expects you to move, but not to the extent that you want to God over your own case. He’s gone through it already. He’s seen the end from the beginning.”

Reception, Ministry, and a Day Job
The album dropped in June and is available on Apple Music, Spotify, iTunes, Pandora and other platforms. Odion is deliberate about not tracking numbers.
“I didn’t release this for charts. My younger brother said, ‘We’ve got to push this out there and let people enjoy it.’ God told me to put this out, let it tell stories. I’m not monitoring what it’s doing on the major platforms… This is just something of a ministry. I still have a job I’m doing.”
Feedback from church, friends and listeners across the world has been warm. For Odion, that is enough.

On Technology, AI and Originality
Asked about the rise of AI in music, Odion was pragmatic.
“AI can help you… Don’t be lazy. But AI cannot do what God has told you. The story He has given to you, AI cannot tell the same way… Fantastic doesn’t mean it’s blessed by God.”
He uses technology in his professional life and sees value in AI for arranging or researching scripture, but draws a clear line at letting it write the core message.
“If AI generates something that brings glory to the name of God, come on, let it be… As long as it gives God the glory.”

Secular Artists Crossing Over
On the growing trend of secular artists featuring on gospel projects, Odion was careful but firm.
“Would I do that? No. If the person’s heart isn’t there or they’re just singing for publicity… I wouldn’t personally bring them to sing a gospel song with me that they don’t believe in. Every man carry your cross and follow the Lord. I’m kind of what you would call an old-school Christian. Some things I wouldn’t do.”

Who He Would Collaborate With—and What’s Next
He prefers working with people he knows and trusts: his choir director Agatha Ebenezer, longtime friends such as Samuel Kolorejo, and musicians like B. Demi (Absax) and Emmanuel Oluoye—artists whose faith and character he can vouch for.
As for the future, more stories are already written.
“Every song I’m working on, I write it in English… but I’ve come to find out that people appreciate it in Pidgin. So for every song I make, there is going to be a Pidgin version. It’s cooking. When the Lord says it’s time… expect to see something soon.”

A passion-driven Nigerian skills development organization, SkillUp Naija House of Invention, the organizers of the Rivers State Teens’ Craft Competition, has just discovered highly skilled teenagers from its competition in Rivers State.

The Rivers State Teens’ Craft Competition is setup to encourage and support teenagers with unique technical, innovative and creative skills. RivCraft Competition as it’s fondly called is organized with the full support of the Hon. Commissioner for Education, Prof. Prince Chinedu Mmom JP.

This competition, which encompasses technical, engineering and vocational craft, is designed to discover creative youngsters, empower them and make them resourceful and enterprising entrepreneurs of international repute. In Rivers State, RivCraft auditioned teenagers between the ages of 9 and 19, whether in school or out of school, and equipped them to showcase their nova creativity as it pertains to technical, engineering as well as vocational craft.

After which, those that were successful were brought online to compete for an ultimate prize of One million, five hundred thousand naira (N1,500,000) by showcasing their unique self-made innovation(s)/invention(s) of products like drones, robots, fuel less generators, electric vehicles, fashion designs, arts and paintings, machines and other technical, engineering and vocational craft.

During the cause of the competition, contestants were engaged in weekly task, and SkillUp Naija gave complimentary cash prize of Fifty Thousand Naira (50,000) weekly, to encourage the contestants. In the last week edition of weekly task, Abraham Timon, a fifteen years old inventor who developed a social media platform called Twike, a social platform that can rival Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook, came top. Closely followed by Raymond Okoro, another teenager who programmed a computer to do calculations and follow instructions.

There are other mind-blowing young inventors in this competition, the likes of Osoba Hebron, a robotic builders cum programmer, Kpoudosu Daisy Ineikoroghaere, the young girl who harness green electricity from aloe vera plant, Ejike Delight C., a game developer and many other outstanding youngsters with unbelievable inventions. These and many more make the ongoing Rivers State Teens’ Competition quite interesting.

The Grand finale/Awards Event of the Rivers State Teen's Craft Competition promises to be much more interesting as there will be exhibition of the inventions and products developed by these teenagers, and the executive governor of Rivers State, his excellence, Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike CON and other dignitaries will be present at the event.

Seriously Nigeria like Israel can have zero unemployment. All we need do is to create the right environment, deploy the right minds and empower the right hands and employment opportunities will be endless. In every 5 Nigerians 3 have the capacity to create jobs for others when empowered in an enabling environment.

Creating the environment where great ideas can germinate and be nourished to great success is easy. First it must start with firm belief in originality; because it came from the West doesn’t make it first. We must resist the urge to borrow or duplicate what we see in the West. If we must borrow, let’s learn how to improve upon what was borrowed. Like the Chinese, we can borrow and make it better. Second, we must learn how to import knowledge and turn them into great ideas. You don’t copy knowledge; if you don’t know it you don’t know it. This is the cross of our challenges; we learnt how to copy in primary schools, and as adult we remain copycats. We must learn how to import knowledge and build great ideas with the same. Our value must be on knowledge and ideas.

However, I found goodnews in a nation of goods and no services. There are many Nigerians with great ideas that we as a nation have refused to harness. This is true because almost all fortune 500 companies in the world have a Nigerian as the head or among the board of directors. It is great ideas that put them there.
