https://www.naijamember.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Members-of-Boko-Haram-sect-360x225-300x188.jpg Militant Islamist group, Boko Haram, has vowed that “from now on, killing, slaughtering, destruction and bombing’’ would be its religious duty anywhere it invades. The group, in a new video released to journalists on Saturday, showed its armed members mowing down civilians lying face down in a dormitory. The setting of the latest video appeared to be a long school dormitory furnished with bunk beds which an unnamed leader of the group claimed was in Bama, a town 40 miles north of Gwoza, Borno State. The leader of the sect was heard saying that they were killing ‘infidels’ or non-believers. The Mailonline which published a story on the chilling video , reported that there were “so many corpses the gunmen had difficulty stepping to reach bodies still twitching with life.” It quoted the Boko Haram leader as also saying that they had made sure the floor of the dormitory was turned red with blood to show “how it is going to be in all future attacks and arrests of infidels “ According to the Mailonline, the start of the video shows the Islamists enter the building where the victims, mostly adult males, lay. It added that the video came two days after fleeing villagers reported that the extremists were rounding up elderly people and killing them in two schools in Gwoza. In it, the unnamed sect leader, who noted that Prophet Mohammed advised prisoners should be held, not killed, said, ‘‘we felt this is not the right time for us to keep prisoners.’’ He added that that was why the group would “continue to see that the grounds are crimsoned with the flowing blood of prisoners.’’ According to him, even though those killed may call themselves Muslims, the sect considers them as “infidels.” Previously, the militants had told residents of villages and towns that they would kill only enemies since they wanted people to live peacefully in an area they dubbed an Islamic caliphate. The sect had in its last video, threatened to attack the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for mobilising support against it. Sanusi had in statements asked Kano State residents as well as vigilantes to arm and defend themselves against future terror attacks following a recent attack by suspected members of the group on the Kano Central Mosque. The group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, condemned Sanusi and adherents of most Islamic sects, describing them as infidels who had abandoned the Islamic doctrine. Shekau had said, “Before I start talking to my brothers who believed in me and the religion of Allah, not the religion of democracy, not that of western education, those who believed in the religion of the Quran not that of the constitution and not religion of the Emir of Kano. “We do not practise the religion of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, not the religion of Jonathan, not the religion of Obasanjo, not the religion of Atiku, not the religion of Babangida, not the religion of Obama, not the religion of Bush, not the religion of Clinton, but the religion of Allah. “Now listen to me Emir of Kano. I am talking to you and only you because of your recent utterances. Let me inform you now that you are late (dead), you should know that you are only the King of Kano, King of Central Bank, King of money, you are only Sanusi Lamido.” He also said, “Emir of Kano Sanusi, you are late, that our triumph is just for a period of time so you said. Even your predecessors who are renowned idol worshippers in Islamic history like ‘Abujahal’ could not succeed in fighting Islam. “Yes, you can say that our success is for a period of time, because you are a king of Bank and a loyal citizen of your country. “Because you are made the Emir of Kano, that is why you got angry and was calling on the vigilante groups and hunters to attack us. Let me tell you that the hunters and the vigilante groups will fail and you will also fail.” DOWNLOAD HERE |
Gunmen on Friday kidnapped wife of the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, Osun State University chapter, Mrs. Funmilayo Abiona. Abiona was abducted in Osogbo around 7:30pm. Our correspondent gathered on Saturday that Mrs. Abiona closed from her shop around Oke Bale area of Osogbo and was heading home to meet her husband, Dr. Oluseye Abiona, when the hoodlums, who had been on her trail, caught up with her and forcefully took her away after a hot argument. The hoodlums, according to some residents of the area, were dressed in red shirts. The abducted woman, who was said to be driving Lexus car, was with her two children when the incident happened. Mrs. Abiona was said to have struggled with her captors, who eventually overpowered her and forced her into a red car, which they used for the operation. The hoodlums, out of anger, were said to have smashed the rear screen of the Lexus car, leaving the children and driving away with their target. The abductors were said to have called her husband to demand a N50m ransom, saying his wife was okay where she was being kept. Efforts to speak with the ASUU chairman were unsuccessful. However, a source close to him said the case had been reported to the police. The source said Mrs. Abiona was allowed by her abductors to speak with her husband when they called to demand ransom of a N50m. The source who pleaded anonymity, said the case was reported at the state Criminal Investigation Department, Osogbo on Saturday. The Vice Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Prof. Bashir Okesina, confirmed the kidnap when our correspondent called him. Calls put across to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, to confirm the abduction were not successful. She had yet to respond to the text message sent to her as of the time this report was filed. Some armed hoodlums had in November abducted a local government boss in Osogbo. The LG boss was said to have been released after a N5 million ransom was paid. Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has warned that kidnappers operating in the state had deviced a new way of dispossessing their victims of huge sums of money. The command said kidnappers now abduct unsuspecting victims, get their Automated Teller Machine cards’ pin numbers and use them to withdraw all the funds in their (victims’) accounts. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, on Friday explained that the victims were always kept hostage until money in their accounts were exhausted with the ATM cards. Expressing the need for members of the public to be vigilant, especially during the Yuletide period, Mohammad, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt, urged Nigerians to only go out with their ATM cards when necessary. The police spokesman identified some of the victims of the new method of kidnapping and robbery as passengers in public transport. “The unsuspecting victim is usually abducted, forced to reveal his ATM PIN and kept hostage, while same ATM card is used by the criminals to withdraw money from his account. “Such victim regains freedom only after his bank account has been exhausted.” Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, on Friday urged officers in the state command to shun corruption while discharging their duties. Aderanti, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria, said bribery and corruption dehumanises officers involved in the act. He said, “I urge all police officers at all levels to shun bribery and corruption. Do not collect bribe that will bring shame to your family. “Run away from all forms of misconduct that will lead you and the command to disrepute. “Bribery and corruption create an impression that you have lost your sense of decency completely.” Aderanti stated that bail was free, describing the request and collection of such as extortion. He stressed that any officer caught in the act of receiving money for bail would be dealt with. “It is very shameful and it won’t get us anywhere. I don’t see any good you can do with such money. I don’t want anybody to be arrested over this shameful act, because I won’t let such person escape it,’’ he said. SOURCES:- WWW.NAIJAMEMBER.COM |
https://www.naijamember.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Fahat-Fahat-Soldier.jpg A young Nigerian soldier who was one of the 54 sentenced to death has sent a passionate appeal to Nigerian. One of the 54 Nigerian soldiers sentenced to death by a court martial on charges of mutiny and refusing to go and fight the dreaded Boko Haram sect, 22-year-old Fahat Fahat, has sent out a passionate message to Nigerians, asking if they are justified to died even when the army did not provide the adequate equipment and training for them to fight the sect. According to Fahat, pushing the young soldiers to fight the well equipped Boko Haram without the necessary weapons was like sending them to fight with their bare hands. Shortly after they were sentenced to death for firing squad, Fahat took to his Facebook page to write the pathetic appeal to his countrymen. Hear him: “Hello ladies and gentle men. I am soldier and I am sentenced to death by the Nigerian Army. (be)Cause we did not go to fight Boko Haram without equipment. We ask for weapon instead (they) gave (us) death sentence.” The details of the so called mutiny reads like a child’s play because some of the accused soldiers testified that they refused to take part in the operation following the failure of the army to provide them with the necessary support equipment. They explained that owing to a lack of equipment, they lost three officers, 23 soldiers plus 83 others suffering various degrees of injuries after their units were ambushed by Boko Haram fighters during an operation to retake the town of Bulabulin in Borno on July 9. Some of the accused soldiers said they did not attend the briefing where the operation was announced, while others said they did not join the mission because they were ill and there was no medical personal attached to their unit to give medical assistance. If you were the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, would you allow these young men to be killed? SOURCES:- WWW.NAIJAMEMBER.COM |

Of the 246,853 candidates who sat for the November/December 2014 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, only 72,522 candidates, representing 29.37 per cent, obtained credits in five subjects, including Mathematics and English Language. This puts the percentage of failed candidates at 70.63 per cent. However, the Head of the Nigeria National Office, the West African Examinations Council, Mr. Charles Eguridu, said there was an improvement when compared with last year’s 26.97 per cent (amounting to 80,135 candidates) who obtained five credits in five subjects, including Mathematics and English Language. Announcing the results in Lagos on Thursday, Eguridu said there was a marked reduction in examination malpractices. He attributed this to recent measures, including the introduction of biometric registration and customised mathematical sets with inbuilt calculators, taken to curb the scourge. Notwithstanding efforts made to curb examination frauds, Eguridu said WAEC withheld results of 28,817 candidates. He said the results which represented 11.67 of the number of candidates who wrote the examination, were withheld for “various cases of malpractices.” The cases, according to him, are being investigated with the reports of findings expected to be presented to the National Examination Committee for consideration. The examination agency had withheld 38,260 results, equivalent of 12.88 per cent of the total number of candidates who sat for the examination in 2013 for similar reasons. Short of the total figures are 5,691 candidates (about 2.3 per cent) whose results, Eguridu said, were still being processed for errors he blamed on the candidates and cyber café operators. He said, “Of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination, 75,313 candidates (30.5 per cent) obtained credits and above in six subjects; 110,346 candidates (44. 7 per cent) obtained credits and above in five. “In addition, 145,036 candidates, representing 58.75 per cent, obtained credits and above in four subjects while 177.177 candidates, representing 71.77 per cent, obtained credits and above in three subjects. A total of 205,090 candidates (83.08) obtained credits and above in two subjects,” he presented. The total number of candidates that sat for the examination this year is 61,364 short of the 308,217 candidates that wrote it last year – a decline of about 20 per cent. There was also a shortfall of “blind candidates” enrollment. The figure fell from 82 recorded the previous year to 48. And while 17 of the category of candidates obtained five credits in 2013, four achieved similar feat this year. CLICK HERE TO CHECK YOU WAEC GCE 2014 RESULT |

https://www.naijamember.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/President-Goodluck-Jonathan1-360x2251.jpg President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday cautioned labour unions against punishing Nigerians with “unnecessary industrial actions.” Specifically, the President wondered why the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers would embark on a nationwide strike over issues involving an oil worker and his employer. Jonathan, at the commencement of a housing scheme for workers in Abuja, said he believed that labour needed to explore all avenues for resolving conflicts before embarking on strike. The President said, “We believe that before declaring an industrial action, all avenues for resolving it must be exploited. We are smiling today because we passed through some painful negotiations. Nothing good comes easy. So, for us to smile, there must be some painful things to pass through. “If there are issues, let us discuss. This administration means well for everybody. This administration believes that the country belongs to all of us. That I am the President today does not make me feel like I have a stake in Nigeria more than the man working in the garden. We all have equal stake in Nigeria. “I beg Nigerians to allow me to serve for a period and go and this will not make me more important than any other Nigerian. Therefore, what is painful to the worker is also painful to us. Let us negotiate, let us discuss and make sure we don’t punish our people more by unnecessary industrial actions over issues that can be resolved.” Jonathan said he always called on labour leaders to work and partner his government for the interest of workers. He said, “Whenever there is a crisis, it is the workers that suffer. If there is a little problem, we should be able to resolve it peacefully. But when workers now go to the extreme and declare war, it is the workers that suffer the most. “Nigerian workers in all the states of the federation and local governments are paying more for transport to go to work because of the current strike by oil workers. “Their children also pay more to go to school. Their wives and relations pay more to go to the market and other places. Who loses more? It is the workers.” Oil workers under PENGASSAN and NUPENG commenced an indefinite strike in a bid to push for the implementation of their demands from the Federal Government. https://www.naijamember.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Vehicular-queue-at-the-Oando-filling-station-in-Abuja...-on-Monday-360x227.jpg The nationwide strike by oil workers led to long fuel queues in the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Kwara and Plateau states as hundreds of motorists besieged the few filing stations that sold petrol on Monday. In Lagos, the situation was normal until the evening when our correspondents noticed queues in many stations in the city. But the development slowed down commercial activities in the Federal Capital Territory where many commuters were stranded for hours at various bus stops. One of our correspondents visited some ministries and agencies and observed that their often crowded car parks were virtually empty. An official of the Federal Ministry of Environment, who gave his name simply as Nnamdi, said, “This strike came as a surprise. I was lucky to make it to work this(Monday) morning and you can see that the place is virtually empty. Many workers are stranded because many stations had no fuel to sell due to the strike by oil and gas workers.” Black market operators cashed in on the scarcity by selling the product in jerrycans on the major roads and streets in the FCT at prices above the pump price of N97. The situation was the same in Makurdi, Gboko, Kastina – Ala, Oturkpo and Ukum Local Government Areas of Benue State, where motorists paid between N105 and N135 instead of N97. On the streets, the product sold for as much as N200 per litre. Commercial drivers and private car owners told our correspondent in the state that the scarcity would cause untold hardship to the people, especially as Christmas approaches. Our correspondent in Kwara State observed that over 90 per cent of the filling stations in llorin which were selling fuel before 8am on Monday, suddenly locked their entrance . The managers of the filling stations declined comments but surprised motorists described their action as shocking. One of the motorists, Kunle Ajana, said, “What I am witnessing here now is surprising. Some of my friends bought fuel in the morning and I am surprised that I cannot find anywhere to buy now.” In Jos, Plateau State, there were also long queues in the afternoon at most of the filling stations which initially sold petrol in the morning. At the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Mega station in the city, the queue stretched to about two kilometres, thereby causing traffic congestion along the major high-ways in the city. However, motorists in Oyo and Delta states did not experience any difficulty as most stations were seen dispensing fuel. At the NNPC depot in Apata, Ibadan, normal activities went on even as black market operators still sold fuel at N90 per litre instead of N97. An attendant in one of the fuel stations in Boluwaji area of Ibadan told The PUNCH that there was no instruction from the owner of the station to them to stop selling petroleum products. “The owner of this place is in Lagos. We called him to take instruction concerning the scarcity but he said that we should continue to sell fuel. We took delivery of 33,000 litres on Saturday so we have plenty of petrol in our tanks,” he said. Our correspondent in Delta State learnt that junior workers under the umbrella of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas did not join in the strike. The NNPC depot in Warri did not close down as petroleum marketers loaded their trucks with ease on Monday. When one of our correspondents visited the NNPC Ejigbo depot in Lagos on Monday afternoon, loading activities were also going on. The Lagos Zonal Chairman, PENGASSAN, Mr. Abel Agarin, said, “The people you saw at Ejigbo are NUPENG members who were allowed to load. But immediately we got there, workers from the PEF who were signing their documents and the DPR workers were asked to stop working.” He said that some tankers that loaded earlier in the day at the depot were allowed to move out because of the danger they posed if left there. Agarin added, “In Lagos, most depots were shut and there was no loading. After Ejigbo depot, we went to Mobil on Mobil Road. We also visited Oando loading bay. At the Apapa depot and those owned by Mobil and Oando, there was total compliance. There was work by NUPENG members at Total depot which was later stopped in the course of the day. “But by tomorrow (today), I believe that loading activities would not take place there. In the early hours of Monday, trucks were seen loading products at Apapa depots in Lagos but at a reduced pace. Our correspondent gathered from oil marketers that the Petroleum Tanker Drivers arm of NUPENG in the state were yet to join the strike. But a petrol tanker driver, who identified himself as Shola, said that some depots were having difficulties exiting their trucks from the point of loading. He also said that trucks ready to leave Lagos for other states were being constrained by the Petroleum Equalisation Fund processes. PEF is a parastatal of the Federal Government established by law to equalise the cost of transporting petroleum products from product depots to filling stations. This is to ensure that petroleum products are made available at uniform prices throughout Nigeria. To operate the price equalisation mechanism, marketers whose petrol stations are located close to depots contribute to the Equalisation Fund while others with petrol stations farther away from depots make claim from the Fund. The President, PENGASSAN, Mr. Francis Johnson, said the unions had issued a 15-day ultimatum to the government before embarking on the strike. “Before we met on October 30 and 31, the two unions had met in Enugu. We issued an ultimatum, which expired on November 15. After the expiration of the ultimatum, we also engaged government agencies and the international oil companies involved, but it was not fruitful. We don’t like Nigerians to go through what is going on now,” he added. The Media and Information Officer, PENGASSAN, Mr. Babatunde Oke, however said that the Federal Government had invited the two unions for a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday (today). He said that “in Warri, there was no loading, but NUPENG members were seen wearing red to signify their protest. In Port Harcourt, there was total compliance in all oil and gas locations, including the upstream and midstream as the loading bays were shut. “In Kaduna and Abuja, there was total compliance on the part of PENGASSAN members. In Kaduna, the gate of the Kaduna Refinery was shut and no entrance was allowed . There was no loading also in Kaduna.” Oke added that “earlier on Monday morning, the NNPC towers was opened for business and workers were at their desks but they were later called to stop work at about 11.45 a.m.” Meanwhile, the NNPC has assured the public that the strike would not dislocate the distribution and sale of fuel to members of the public. The Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC, Mr. Ohi Alegbe, said the NNPC was in talks with the leadership of the unions which gave the assurance that they would not disrupt the fuel supply and distribution system as the strike was basically aimed at addressing the anti-labour issues by some of the international oil companies. The corporation and its downstream subsidiary, the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company, also revealed that it had over 32 days stock of petroleum products available for supply across the nation during the Yuletide season and beyond. It said 17 additional petroleum laden vessels were at the Lagos Port waiting to discharge to the various depots for onward distribution to members of the public. It further assured that everything was being done to ensure that there was no hitch whatsoever in the supply system that could bring any form of hardship to motorists and those who intend to travel during the period. The NNPC advised marketers to desist from hoarding or diversion of petroleum products as those caught would be sanctioned. The Head, Public Affairs Department of the Petroleum Resources, Ms. Dorothy Bassey, told one of our correspondents on the telephone that there were still meetings going on to resolve the issues raised by the oil and gas workers. She said at the management level, work would continue to go on at the DPR until the situation was brought under control. The oil and gas workers are protesting the failure of the Federal Government to carry out turnaround maintenance of the nation’s four refineries, the non-reduction of pump price of petrol in line with the slump in global prices of crude oil and the delayed passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill. They had vowed that the strike would continue until the government addressed their grievances, which also included the non-implementation of the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act.
