PoliticsAPC, Governors Hail Buhari’s Victory by guruwizard(op): 5:26am On Dec 13, 2014

The All Progressives Congress in the South-East and some governors elected on the party’s platform have hailed the emergence of a former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, as the party’s presidential candidate.

The APC also hailed the losers of the party’s presidential primary for accepting defeat in good faith.

The party, which described the losers as co-winners of the presidential primary, saluted the robust understanding and sportsmanship they demonstrated after the result of the exercise was announced.

A former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, defeated former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Kano State Governor, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso; Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and a newspaper publisher, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, to emerge as the winner of the primary held on Wednesday through Thursday in Lagos.

The party said the candour of the losers and their solidarity with the winner was uncommon and highly commendable.

A statement issued on Friday by the spokesman for the APC in South-East, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, said the result of the primary reflected a nationwide acceptance of Buhari as a man of the people.

Also, the Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, and his Osun State counterpart, Alhaji Rauf Aregbesola, congratulated Buhari on his victory at the primary.

They said in statements issued by their spokespersons that Buhari’s emergence was an attestation of the high regard the party had for democratic process.

According to Ajimobi, with the successful completion of the primary under a convivial atmosphere, APC is now set to take over power at the centre from the Peoples Democratic Party through the ballot box and take the country to greater heights.

Aregbesola said if elected President next year, Buhari would stamp out the corruption threatening Nigeria’s development as well as turn the fortunes of the country around.

He said, “It is clear now that Nigerians are determined to jettison their religious, tribal, partisan and other mundane interests to rally support for Buhari in the interest of the country’s development.

“The people have chosen the best man for the job regardless of all other less edifying considerations. Buhari represents the face of the required battle against corruption.

“He represents openness and commitment to good governance. For those who consider the awful impact of corruption on our country, the choice of Gen Buhari would easily translate to the readiness of Nigerians to battle against the most debilitating scourge against the country’s growth.”

Politics2015: Governorship Primary Tears PDP Apart In States by guruwizard(op): 5:19am On Dec 13, 2014
https://www.naijamember.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Martins-Elechi.gif
There are strong indications that the governorship primary held on Monday is tearing state chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party apart.

Saturday PUNCH reliably learnt on Thursday that many of the aggrieved aspirants were planning to leave the party.

States where the PDP is currently battling intractable crises include Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, Yobe, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Kebbi, Imo and Abia.

It was gathered that the PDP leadership was disturbed by crises arising from the primary.

It was learnt that as a first step, aggrieved aspirants were being encouraged to go to the party’s appeal panels.

But as part of moves to pacify them, it was gathered that they were being wooed with promises of appointments in 2015.

A member of the PDP National Working Committee, who confided in Saturday PUNCH, said, “The PDP is the ruling party and we are sure of winning the 2015 presidential election.

“We have told them (aggrieved aspirants) that it is better for them to remain in the party. When there is time to make appointments, they will be given top consideration.”

It was, however, gathered that the peace move had not yielded positive results among the aggrieved aspirants.

Rivers: PDP will lose Rivers if,…—Aggrieved aspirants

In Rivers State, the 16 governorship aspirants have continued to reject the outcome of the governorship primary of the PDP.

A former Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, got the party’s governorship ticket.

The grouse of the 16 aspirants is that Wike comes from Ikwerre, an area where the incumbent governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, hails from.

They argued that the position of the governor must be zoned in the interest of justice and fairness.

One of the aspirants, Tonye Princewill, in an interview in Port Harcourt, expressed the fear that the party might lose the state to the APC if the zoning formula for the governorship position was finally jettisoned.

Princewill stated, “The Rivers State Wike led PDP executive does not realise we are several steps ahead of them; none of the key aspirants were involved in the congresses. That should be a signal for the party.

“Our silence will speak louder than our words. In the end, the PDP should sit up and address this sham or they will lose us and lose Rivers state. Nothing is impossible.”

But the state Chairman of the party, Mr. Felix Obuah, in a statement faulted the stand of the aggrieved aspirants.

He stated, “This is about the first time in the political history of the state, a party decided to do away with outdated primordial sentiments in choosing its representatives based on quality and personal charisma which is PDP’s edge over others.”

Akwa Ibom: 22 aspirants kick against Akpabio-backed candidate

The twenty-two aspirants who boycotted the PDP primary on Monday are pressuring the national headquarters of the party to cancel what they described as the skewed primary in favour of Governor Godswill Akpabio’s friend, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

One of the aspirants, Dr. Peter Esu, in an interview, said they had not taken the decision to defect to any political party. He said they have appealed the outcome of Monday’s PDP primary.

Esu said, “We have confidence in our party. They will listen to us. And if at all we are to defect to a “We are under intense pressures from other political parties for us to move enmasse with our supporters.

Oro ethnic group threatens to leave PDP

But the people of Oro ethnic nationality, the third largest group in the state, have threatened to defect to a party that would accommodate their interests.

According to them, what will only stop them from defecting to another political party is the cancelation of the governorship primary in Akwa Ibom State.

The position of Oro people, who occupy five o ut of the 12 local government areas in the oil-rich belt of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, was made known through Oron Union.

One of the leaders of the group and former Nigerian Ambassador to Greece, Dr. Etim Uye, in a statement, said their intention to defect was part of the move to express their anger against the Akpabio administration.

Their demands include total cancellation of the PDP governorship primary.

They said that in the alternative, considering the limitation in time imposed by the Independent National Electoral Commission election timetable, a consensus candidate should be sourced from aspirants, who are of Oro extraction.

“In the event of the neglect of our position by the national leadership of PDP to correct the obvious anomaly perpetuated against Oro, the people of Oro will be left with no alternative, but to join a political party and platform they believe will accommodate their interest and aspirations,‘‘ Oro people declared.

Ogun: Nine aspirants reject result

In Ogun State, nine governorship aspirants have moved against Adegboyega Isiaka, who emerged as the PDP candidate in a controversial circumstance.

The nine aspirants had boycotted the primary, where Isiaka got the governorship primary.

They include Tony Ojesina (Ewekoro), Prince Yanju Lipede (Abeokuta South), Remilekun Bakare (Abeokuta South), Sarafa Ishola (Abeokuta North), Yomi Majekodunmi (Abeokuta North) and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole (Abeokuta South). Others are David Bamgbose (Abeokuta North), Isiaq Akinlade (Yewa South), and Alhaji Rafiu Ogunleye (Ijebu East).

The party’s National Working Committee had on Monday issued a statement ordering the stoppage of the governorship primary in the state. But the state chapter of the party went ahead to conduct the primary.

Saturday Naijamember gathered that many of the aspirants were still looking up to the national leadership of the party to ensure justice.

One of chieftains of the party in the state, who confided in Saturday PUNCH, said, “The only thing that can ensure victory of the party in the state is justice. If there is no justice, the PDP can as well forget winning the state.”

But the state chairman of the party, Mr. Adebayo Dayo, said he never got any directive from either the National Executive Council and the NWC on the conduct of the governorship primary.

He said, “I am not in a position to confirm or deny what the national secretariat in Abuja has said. At the National Executive Council meeting we held last month or thereabout, we were given the guidelines and the timetable for the primaries.”

When contacted, one of the aggrieved governorship contestants, Remilekun Bakare, told one of our correspondents on the telephone on Thursday that many of them were waiting for the decision of the NWC and the NEC on the primary.

He said, “We are not defecting yet. We are waiting for the decision of the National Executive Council and National Working Committee on the primary.”

Imo: PDP must resolve grumblings—Ararume

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha, won the Imo State Governorship primary of the PDP.

But the runner-up in the primary, Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, had rejected the result, insisting that he is the winner of the race.

Ararume told one of our correspondents in Umuahia that he won the context but his mandate was given to Ihedioha in error.

He expressed confidence that his stolen mandate would be restored to him by the party.

He stated, “I won the primaries but I want to believe the ticket was given to Ihedioha by mistake. It was a miscalculation because the total number of accredited votes was 1,017 and valid votes were 1,006. So, if you deduct the excess of 21 votes mistakenly added to Ihedioha you will arrive at the truth that I am the winner of the primaries with 336.”

Yobe: Primary not fair—Ex-minister

There is also crisis in the Yobe State chapter of the party, where a former Minister of Finance, Dr. Yerima Ngama and three other aspirants have rejected the victory of another ex-minister, Alhaji Adamu Waziri.

Yerima, Ibrahim Talba, and Hassan Kafayos Hussein, in a collective statement, faulted the result.

The aspirants said that the list of the delegates that should have voted at the primaries was not shown to them.

Ebonyi: Elechi set to join LP

Our correspondents gathered that the Ebonyi State Governor, Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State, had been staying away from the PDP’s activities since he lost his bid to install his preferred aspirant as the party’s candidate.

The PDP chieftains in the state including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, ensured that Elechi’s deputy, Dave Umahi, picked the governorship ticket.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that Elechi was set to dump the PDP for Labour Party.

Already, his first son, Elechi Elechi and other loyalists, including the senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Chris Nwankwo, have joined the LP.

Kebbi: Eight aspirants rise against winner

In Kebbi State, eight aspirants have rejected the primary, which produced General Sarkin Yaki Bello (retd.) as governorship candidate.

The aggrieved aspirants, including the state deputy governor, Ibrahim Aliyu, and Senator Muhammadu Magoro, held a meeting after which they issued a communiqué rejecting the exercise.

They urged the NWC of the party to investigate and punish all those behind the conduct of the primaries.

Abia: It was a marred process–Ogah

In Abia State, the runner up, Dr. Uche Ogah, who expressed reservations over the primaries, said he would make his official position known in a week’s time.

In an interview with Saturday PUNCH, he alleged that proper accreditation was not done, adding that “ a process marred can never produce the mandate of the people.”

Ogah, who polled 103 votes at the exercise, therefore, appealed to his teeming supporters to remain calm and law abiding, promising to make public his next line of action after due consultations. But in a swift reaction, the winner of the Abia context, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, said the exercise was very transparent and commendable contrary to allegations by the losers that the process was fraudulent.

He roundly denied that he “quarantined the delegates and denied his opponents access to them,” insisting that all aspirants had unfettered access to the delegates.

Ikpeazu said “ I lack the capacity to quarantine 700 delegates,” adding that no aspirant would claim he was denied access to the delegates because their list was made public and they were the same delegates who participated in state and national assemblies’ primaries.”

Bayelsa: Ex-Commissioner, others dump PDP

Some prominent members of the party in Bayelsa State chapter, including a former commissioner, Mr. Zuwa Kodugah, have defected to the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

Konugah and a former President of the Ijaw Youth Congress Wordwide, Jonjon Oyeinfa, had shifted their loyalty to APGA where they had picked their tickets to run for the state House of Assembly elections in 2015.

We will accommodate all aspirants—PDP

When contacted, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in an interview with one of our correspondents, dismissed the fear of the impending explosion of the party.

Metuh assured that the PDP would resolve the crises arising from primaries and pacify aggrieved aspirants

He said, “What we are doing now is that the party is working with the people directly in those states, to make sure that once the guideline is upheld and the election was conducted according to the guidelines, the outcome would be upheld.

“The other one is to ensure that we accommodate our members. We are working on it, I can assure you.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) for emerging victorious in the keenly contested presidential primary election of the All Progressives Congress.

Atiku, in a concession statement by his media office in Lagos on Thursday, said that Buhari ran a spirited campaign, and that since the delegates have spoken, he fully deserves the victory.

The statement reads, “I am very confident that you will provide the needed leadership to turn this country around.

“I have no doubt that you will work with dedicated and qualified Nigerians to protect our citizens, improve our economy, create jobs, improve education, reform governance and fight corruption.

“You will indeed bring the change Nigerians have been yearning for once more, congratulations.

“I congratulate the other contestants, namely Governors Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Rochas Okorocha as well as the erudite Sam Nda-Isaiah. You have all demonstrated your commitment to democracy by participating in this transparent process and by campaigning vigorously across this country.”

He thanked delegates for their sacrifices and their commitment to democracy.

In particular, he said he thanked those who voted for him for their faith in him.

He called on his supporters to support Buhari.

He said, “However, since we came up short, we have to now rally behind Buhari to help him prevail in the coming Presidential election.

“The APC has demonstrated, through the transparent process, the party’s commitment to democracy and rule of law. It has demonstrated its respect for people and their choice through the ballot box.

“I sincerely thank the Convention Committee for putting together a hitch-free convention.

“My dear friends, we have voted, a winner has emerged. I pledge my commitment to this Party, and to campaign vigorously for our candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and all APC candidates to ensure victory in the 2015 elections.

“I call on all other contestants and our party’s rank and file to unite behind our candidates at all levels to ensure that the PDP is defeated, so Nigerians can have real change.”

Atiku said he will hand over to Buhari his review and possible implementation of his policy document which he said was developed in line with the party’s philosophy.

PoliticsAPC Presidential Candidate Emerges Tomorrow by guruwizard(op): 6:25am On Dec 10, 2014
The national convention of the All Progressives Congress begins in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, today (Wednesday).

The presidential candidate of the party will emerge tomorrow (Thursday).

More than 8,000 accredited delegates are expected to elect the party’s presidential flag bearer who is to face President Goodluck Jonathan, the sole candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, in the 2015 general elections.

Five aspirants are ex-Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari; a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso; Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, and the Publisher of Leadership Newspaper, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah. They are all vying for the party’s sole ticket.

Already, supporters of Buhari and Atiku, the two leading aspirants, have appealed to the APC delegates to vote wisely.

Buhari’s supporters, under the aegis of Buhari Friends Organisation Network, at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, said today’s (Wednesday’s) APC’s primaries offered a unique opportunity for party delegates to vote for change.

The spokesman for the group, St. Athanasius Okon, said Nigerians have not had it so bad since the return of democracy in 1999.

According to him, the nation’s economy is in a shambles while the ruling party carries on as if nothing is amiss.

He explained that “the race to Aso Rock begins from the party’s presidential primaries because the choice of the right candidate will pave the way for APC’s success in the forthcoming polls.”

Chairman-of-Leadership-Newspapers-and-an-Exco-member-of-Newspapers-Proprietors-Association-of-Nigeria-Mr.-Sam-Nda-Isaiah

Okon added, “We want to use this medium to call on the All Progressives Congress’ delegates across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory that would be in Lagos on December 10, 2014, for the presidential primaries, to consider a lot of factors before they cast their vote, as there can be no better time than now for us to use the opportunity God has given us to redeem this country from the shackles of the political class, especially those in the ruling party, the PDP.”

Speaking in a similar vein, Atiku’s supporters urged the party’s delegates to consider his track record of public service and his democratic credentials as they cast their votes.

The spokesman for the group, Alhaji Abdullahi Sugar, while speaking in Abuja, on Tuesday, said Atiku had proven over the years to be a detribalised Nigerian who is determined to change the nation for the better.

He noted that the former Vice President had proven himself as a visionary leader who when given the opportunity would transform Nigeria.

Sugar said, “The Turaki is the leader we need at this time, we urge the APC delegates to give him the chance to lead the party to victory come 2015.”

Politics3,070 PDP Delegates To Endorse Jonathan Thursday by guruwizard(op): 5:57am On Dec 10, 2014
https://www.naijamember.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Olisa-Metuh-360x225.jpg
The Peoples Democratic Party has given conditions under which it said its presidential candidate will engage in a debate with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, stated this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday on the plan for the party’s convention, which holds on Wednesday (today) and Thursday.

The convention holds at the Eagles Square, Abuja.

He said that President Goodluck Jonathan would be ready to debate with any presidential candidate, but insisted that such a debate must be based on issues.

He said, “We will be willing to debate. We want it, we ask for it because we want Nigerians to know who is the best to lead this country. But let us elevate the conduct of this election. We will base it (the debate) on who is the best for this country in terms of unity of this nation, who is best to stabilise our polity and who is best to lead us to prosperity.

“On those three and other issues we will debate with whoever is the candidate of the APC.”

He insisted that the party was convinced that Jonathan would win the presidential election, adding that the duo of a former Head of State, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, put together would not defeat the President.

Metuh described the President as a good product, who he said, possessed unquestionable character.

The spokesperson for the ruling party said, “We have a very good product to sell to Nigerians. GEJ will win the 2015 presidential poll based on his popularity.

“We are today sending notice to the opposition party, the APC, to expect a crushing defeat at the polls.

“In view of our confidence, preparedness and the popularity of our candidate, we declare and urge the APC to put forward its two frontline aspirants in one pot, namely: Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Atiku as joint presidential candidate with their collective credentials and followership to face our President, Goodluck Jonathan.

“For us in the PDP, we are certain that with the grassroots support and love we enjoy from Nigerians across board, President Goodluck Jonathan will secure an emphatic victory against any presidential candidate of the APC or all the candidates put together as one.

“The PDP is rest assured that we have a very good product to sell to Nigerians. We are confident that President Jonathan, as our candidate, is primed to win the 2015 presidential election based on his popularity deriving from his forthrightness, humility and steadfastness to the Nigerian project coupled with his record of verifiable achievements.”

On the convention, Metuh said that 3,070 delegates had been accredited to endorse the candidature of President Jonathan even though he remains the sole candidate of the party.

The endorsement, he said, was in line with the Electoral Act and the electoral guidelines released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He said the first day of the convention would be used to ratify the selection of the Acting National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu; the Acting National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo; and the Acting National Auditor, Wale Adeyanju.

He said the party was not aware of the presidential aspiration of Prof. Akasoba Duke Abiola, adding that the aspirant would likely be coming to the convention ground as a delegate.

PoliticsOsun Tribunal Knocks Lawyers For Unruly Behaviour by guruwizard(op): 5:47am On Dec 10, 2014
The Election Petitions Tribunal hearing matters arising from August 9 governorship election in Osun State, on Tuesday, expressed dismay at the disruptive behaviour of some lawyers during proceedings.

The Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Elizabeth Ikpejime, expressed the dissatisfaction of the panel to the intermittent noise and grumbling made by some of the lawyers anytime witnesses gave answers they did not find satisfactory.

The interjections became so unbearable during Tuesday’s proceedings that Ikpejime had to caution the lawyers, who she said did not behave in a mature way.

Ikpejime said, “The noise coming from the bar is too much. We expect to see this kind of behaviour from the onlookers but it is unfortunate that the noise is from the bar.

“We are all mature but this kind of behaviour is suggesting otherwise.”

Lawyers appearing for the petitioner were seated on one side of the courtroom while the lawyers representing the first, second and third respondents were seated together on the other side.

Counsel from the two sides tried to blame one another for the disruptive noise.

The petitioner’s counsel, Chief Chris Uche (SAN), said the noise was coming from the respondents’ lawyers while counsel for the All Progressives Congress (second respondent), Mr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), told the court that the noise was coming from the petitioner’s side.

The tribunal chairman, who was more specific, later said that the noise was louder from the respondents’ side of the divide.

Meanwhile, Governor Rauf Aregbesola has called four more witnesses on Tuesday who testified that the election was free, fair and credible.

The first witness to be called at the resumed hearing on Tuesday, Balikis Sanusi, told the court that the election was free, fair and devoid of violence while she was being led in evidence by the counsel for the first respondent, Chief Felix Fagbohungbe (SAN).

The witness, who chose to speak in Yoruba, told the tribunal during a cross-examination by the petitioner’s counsel that she finished secondary school in 2003.

PoliticsPDP Gov Aspirant Wears Bulletproof Vest To Primary by guruwizard(op): 9:24pm On Dec 08, 2014
A Lagos State governorship aspirant, Mr. Babatunde Gbadamosi, popularly known as BOG, caused a stir at the Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party governorship primary when he arrived the venue in a bulletproof vest.

Gbadamosi, while addressing journalists at the venue, said he wore the vest in order to protect himself from being hit by a stray bullet following the violence that erupted earlier in the day.

Although the party leadership had said the violence was caused by thugs loyal to the opposition party, Gbadamosi said the real perpetrators of the violence were from within the PDP.

Gbadamosi said the violence was part of a plot to intimidate the almost 1,000 delegates that have converged on the venue.

He said, “I am wearing the bulletproof vest because I am afraid of being shot at but I am urging all my supporters to come and not be intimidated.

“There is fear of intimidation and some people in the party want to intimidate the delegates but we will ensure that everyone will vote fearlessly and as it pleases them.”

He said it was unfortunate that the party leadership was supporting an aspirant.

He, however said the leaders would have their say while the delegates would have their way.

When asked if he was confident of winning, he said, “Would I have paid over N11m to purchase the form if I was not confident?”

PoliticsTambuwal May Get Police Protection As APC Guber Candidate by guruwizard(op): 5:22am On Dec 06, 2014
There are indications that reprieve may come the way of the Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal with regards to providing him Police security following his triumph as the All Progressive Congress governorship candidate in Sokoto State.

Sources disclosed that the provision of Police security for Tambuwal, is however borne out of the duty by the Police High Command to ensure that all such successful candidates of all the political parties, are given security protection because of their status before and during the 2015 elections.

Saturday Vanguard was told categorically that the provision of security for the Tambuwal had nothing to do with the withdrawal of his security details as Speaker since that was a separate issue that is in the law courts.

Confirming the development when Saturday Vanguard sought to know if Tambuwal’s security will be restored as Speaker, Force Public Relations officer, CP Emmanuel Ojukwu said, “The Police will do the needful in protecting Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal and all other contestants”.

Recall that Police authorities ordered the withdrawal of security personnel attached to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Tambuwal, after announcing his defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

At the APC primaries held in Sokoto on Thursday, Tambuwal defeated four other contestants to emerge Sokoto APC governorship candidate thus making him the contestant of the party against other candidates from other political parties next February 2015.
