CultureExciting Ways Americans Do Christmas Better Than Nigerians by Hadewahlay(op): 9:30am On Dec 12, 2014
Christmas, a really wonderful time
of the year is celebrated in many
ways all over the world. The
celebration is mostly about
exchanging gifts and organizing
special meals and many festive
foods for friends and families. In
Nigeria, a lot of exciting things
happen during the Christmas
period, from one month Calabar
Carnival, where exotic culture,
wealth and beauty are displayed
to a variety of celebrations that
occur in the villages when people
travel home.
However, in United States, the
people have many different ways
of celebrating Christmas. They
always make Christmas look like it
was created in America, from their
traditional turkey meal to
Christmas tree decoration.
Here are 10 exciting ways
Americans do Christmas better
than Nigerians; these will make 1. Santa Claus – the myth
guy Americans love
because he is the father
of Christmas
There is no Christmas without
Santa Claus in America. Even
though, Nigerians are trying to
buy into this Christmas culture of
pulling up Santa Claus in some
children’s Christmas parties, it is
not as fun and amazing as the
way Americans celebrate the
festive period with him. The kids
love him, and the whole ‘Santa
Claus is real’ debacle keeps their
imagination running wild. Little
wonder that America has an
opulence of Christmas traditions
that are both spiritual and fun
fulfilling.
2. String up millions of
Christmas lights
Nigerians do take Christmas lights
for granted. It is not that we do
not put some little lights around
us but in America, the whole city
is all lights. America is a country
of light during the Christmas
period, it’s like its their heritage.
Even Thomas Edison who invented
the light bulb knew that
Christmas period should be
lightened. The ceremony of
lighting begins as the streets and
cities attract thousands of people
to celebrate in unity and love.
3. Christmas dinner –
The one meal that unites
families
Nigerians can cook special
Christmas meals…We are yet to
see a country that can beat us in
this tradition. We spend days
preparing for it and this cooking
may take many hours to prepare.
Most times, food is ready in the
afternoon. Everyone comes around
and eat before disappearing to
spend time in other people’s
homes. However, in the United
States, the Christmas dinner is
one special time of reunion and
refreshing that missing out of this
meal can be devastating. In
Nigeria, the meal is all about fried
chicken and rice while it’s
normally about roasted turkey and
vegetables in America.
4. Christmas Tree
Nigerians can celebrate Christmas
without the infamous Christmas
tree. It is not that we do not know
that we should buy Christmas
trees, this tradition is just not as
important as the lights to
decorate our homes. It does not
matter if it is a fake or real tree in
America, everyone wants a
Christmas tree. Americans
understand that without a tree,
their homes may look weird during
Christmas.
5. Cards and postage – a
die-hard tradition that the
social media cannot
replace
Photo
Source: Blissfulanddomestic.com
Nigerians are good in sending
good wish messages during
Christmas with their phones by
sending text messages or making
long calls. However, we have lost
the tradition of sending cards to
our loved ones. This is what
Americans cannot forget to do.
They will still send SMS, emails
and calls to their loved ones but
check their postal boxes; there are
Christmas cards arriving from
different homes, cities and
countries to wish each other well.
6. Floral arrangements
changes the interior
design of homes
There is hardly a home that does
not tell you that Christmas is in
the air with their floral
arrangements in America. Their
beautiful arrangement of floral is
creative and adds colour to the
festive period.
7. Soulful carol services
and events
Theatreinthepark.com
The carol songs never seem to end
in America. Even when it looks as
if someone is not happy to sing
again, the clicking, tickling and
mechanical sounds of lights and
decorations on the Christmas
trees have some songs for you. In
Nigeria, the Christmas days of
carolling is always enchanting and
soulful in our churches and
special gatherings but the carol
and candlelight events in America
are special soulful moment, so
magical and religious.
8. Special gifts,
beautifully wrapped
We give kids mostly money as
Christmas gifts and the adults are
forgotten. In America, serious
attention is paid on what every
member of the family gets. These
presents are perfectly wrapped
and hung on the Christmas trees.
These gifts are magical for the
kids and for the adults. Children
believes that the Santa Claus
always leave their gifts in
stockings and they are hung by
the fire or placed under the
Christmas trees. Everyone
deserves a Christmas present in
America.
9. Midnight Mass
The one night that Nigerians
respect during the festive period is
the New Year Eve. But in America,
celebrating Jesus Christ’s
birthday is very significant. This is
celebrated with a midnight mass
around the first second, minute
and hour of Christmas Day. It is
one midnight, thousands of people
visit churches in a year.
10. Children’s nativity
play
The kids are not left behind during
the Christmas activities in
America. The nativity plays are
always one of the special
moments parents abandon
everything they are doing to watch
their kids play the Biblical story of
the birth of Jesus. At the end of
the plays, refreshments are served
and gifts are passed too.
Get the best of Christmas by
visiting the America for some
electrifying experience that will
make your vacation more
memorable. Have you visited any
city in United States during the
Christmas period? Share your
experience with us.
you feel very Christmassy.
Travel10 Things Nigerians Miss While Living Abroad by Hadewahlay(op): 12:24pm On Dec 11, 2014
1.Visitation
from friends,
neighbours and
families
There is nothing as unique as the
visits we get from our friends and
neighbours in Nigeria, especially
from our families in the village or
our home town. During these
visits, food is served and stories
are shared. It is one experience
that brings oneness and bond
between people. Most people
living abroad do not enjoy this
luxury and they miss home badly
when they are lying alone in their
apartments.

2. Free car
parks
You don’t need to worry about
traffic tickets when you are in
Nigeria. There is no police ticket
for you when you default in your
parking space, it is either you are
called out to re-park your car or
warned. When you park wrongly
abroad, you pay the penalty fee. In
Nigeria, you can park an airplane
on the street without stress.

3. Street shops
You would definitely miss the
street shops in Nigeria when you
travel abroad. The reason is, these
street shops provide you with
everything you may need early in
the morning or late in the night
when the markets are closed. On
every street, you will find Aboki
with small kiosk selling a variety
of household items or a pharmacy
store right at the corner of the
street.

4. Street Jamz
You must have realized that most
developed countries are noise free,
sometimes; you can feel a pin
drop because making a noise is
regarded as an offence. Come to
Nigeria and experience something
that will blow your mind, the jamz
that comes from different shops
can be exciting because it is one
avenue where you can know the
hottest tracks in the music
industry without surfing the
internet.

5. The TV
shows
Nigerian TV soaps and reality
shows are like no other, you can’t
compare them with American or
British TV shows because they are
have been uniquely produced.
Some of the TV soaps have good
story and once you start viewing
them, you will get hooked. Most
Nigerians living abroad miss these
shows because they tell a lot
about our lifestyles and how to
tackle most problems we
encounter in our daily lives.

6. Lagos bus
conductors
on Flickr
Even though, bus conductors in
Lagos can be annoying, you can’t
but miss the way they behave
especially when they have a
disagreement with someone in the
bus. It’s always an interesting and
memorable scenario.

7. Speaking
daily vernacular
– Pidgin English
Pidgin English makes
communication very easy among
Nigerians. Nigerians living abroad
miss speaking their favourite
slangs such as ‘How far?’, ‘Wetin
dey happen?’, ‘How you dey?’.

8. Owambe
Parties
Ventures
Nigerian parties are famous for
some reasons – the fashionable
clothes, foods, friends and
families. They are the only
massive weekend parties in the
world and also the grooviest.
Owambe party is a norm in Nigeria
and if you like it or not, you will
find yourself in one, celebrating
with friends and families, dancing,
eating and drinking with them.
After all, a great celebration
reveals itself wherever there is
food, music and of course,
Nigerians.

9. Market
haggling
You may never know what you
have until you have travelled
abroad and discovered how
difficult it is to bargain on some
items because they come with
price tags. In Nigeria, everything is
very affordable and you can easily
buy things without price tags. You
have the freedom of down pricing
every product with the sellers
which is what you may never
experience in malls and
supermarkets abroad.

10. People who
do everything
for you
You can not get free labour
outside Africa which is one thing
you would definitely miss. There
are a lot of relatives, friends and
neighbours who would love to
wash for you, cook and clean for
you without asking for anything.

CelebritiesMI Blasts Saeon Over Wizkid's Collabo Charges by Hadewahlay(op): 4:44am On Dec 07, 2014
Seun Oni known as Saeon by music fans has a
thing going for her as a singer. Her hit single
‘Boogle Down’ is a good proof of what she can
do. But it seems the beautiful lady has the
mischievous streak in her genetic make-up.
Recently, she drew the ire of fellow music
makers for disclosing in an interview how
much Wizkid collected from her to do a
collaboration with her. MI was particularly
pissed and blasted the young singer for being
a loud mouth. Saeon claimed Wizkid collected
N1.5 million from her but this to rapper, MI
was uncalled for even though he defended
Wizkid’s right for collecting the collabo
charges. “Business is business but Saeon has
no right going to town to broadcast it” the
rapper said.
But Potpourri has found out the two singers
haven’t been true to their fans as they have
made contrary statements to what transpired
between them in separate interviews before
their alleged deal. In an interview with
Vanguard months ago; (Excerpts of interview)
What did it cost you to feature Wizkid in the
song?
We just expressed it to his camp, and I guess
he did some researches on me, came back to
say, yes, and that was it.
Did you have to pay?
I am just going to laugh. That will be my
answer
Wizkid on the other hand, also in an interview
with Vanguard had stated “ I do not charge
people I love for a collabo but when somebody
is on my neck, I can charge like N10 million
for it.

SportsMessi Picks His Favorite Champions League Goal...see Pics by Hadewahlay(op): 3:44am On Nov 06, 2014
Lionel Messi highlighted
his Champions League
final goals as the pick of
his record haul in the
competition after drawing
level with Raul's 71-goal
tally on Wednesday night.
The Argentina star scored twice in Barcelona's
2-0 victory at Ajax – a result which secured the
Catalans’ place in the knockout rounds.
The 27-year-old was initially reluctant to talk
about his personal achievement, preferring
instead to focus on the victory at the
Amsterdam ArenA, but eventually admitted his
efforts against Manchester United in the 2009
and 2011 finals had special significance.
Asked to pick out a favourite from the 71, he
told ESPN: “Choosing a goal? The goals in the
finals are the prettiest and those most
remembered.”
Messi headed Barca in front in the first half
against Ajax and made sure of the points with a
poacher’s effort 14 minutes from full-time.
"The most important thing was to get the three
points,” he added. “Now we have to keep
fighting with Paris Saint-Germain for the
leadership. We achieved the qualification and we
are happy.
"If you let Ajax play they move you from one
side to another. It was hard for us to push
because they played well, but we took
advantage of the opportunities we had."
The only slight blip on an otherwise perfect
night for Luis Enrique’s men was Luis Suarez’s
failure to get off the mark against his former
club.
The Uruguay international has not scored in his
three appearances for Barca after completing a
four-month ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini at
the World Cup.
Messi has no doubts, however, that his fellow
South American will come good.
"Luis Suarez is adapting to the philosophy of
the team. We are hoping he can help us and I'm
sure he will.”

SportsMe, Neymar, Messi Best In The World-suarez by Hadewahlay(op): 3:34am On Nov 06, 2014
Luis Suarez
believes Barcelona's front
three of him, Neymar and
Lionel Messi is the
world's best
strikeforce following
their 2-0 victory over Ajax in the Champions
League.
The Uruguayan and Neymar played supporting
roles at the Amsterdam Arena as Messi took
centre stage with two goals to equal Raul's
record 71-goal haul in the competition and seal
the Catalan's place in the last-16.
Suarez, who joined the Catalans from Liverpool
over the summer, is still searching for his first
goal for Barca, but says the club's striking trio
is unrivalled in world football.
"I think we have the best attack in the world,"
he told Sport 1. "We are working very hard and
keep trying to do better every day."
The 27-year-old recently returned from a four-
month ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini during
Uruguay's World Cup clash with Italy over the
summer, but says he is thoroughly enjoying his
new home in Spain, while highlighting the
difficulty of Wednesday night's test against his
former club.
"I am enjoying my time at Barcelona, because it
was my dream to play for this club.
"It was nice to be back in Amsterdam. Ajax
played a good match and they pressed us back
in the first half. It's difficult to play in
Amstrerdam, because Ajax is very dominant.
They made some good chances. They have a
good trainer and I think they will keep doing
very well."

HealthBeware Of Lassa Fever....evd Junior Brother by Hadewahlay(op): 10:47am On Nov 04, 2014
The peak season for Lassa fever in West Africa
is about to begin. The viral haemorrhagic fever
has been largely forgotten in the Ebola crisis,
and health workers are warning that they may
not have the resources to deal with the
disease if cases increase.
At first sight the symptoms of Lassa are
identical to Ebola. There can be bleeding,
vomiting and fever. But whereas Ebola is a
new outbreak, Lassa is a constant presence.
Every year it infects from 300,000 to 500,000
people, killing up to 20,000.
All of the countries worst hit by Ebola are
home to Lassa fever. On Friday, Dr Geraldine
O'Hara from Doctors Without Borders (MSF)
told the BBC that one of her colleagues had
died of Lassa despite all efforts to save her.
Nigeria may also be seeing its first outbreak
of the season. Only weeks after successfully
containing Ebola, Nigerian media have
reported an outbreak of Lassa in Oyo State.
Lassa fever is transmitted by rats and can
also spread from person-to-person
There is one main difference between an
outbreak of Ebola and Lassa. A Lassa
outbreak is caused by rats. The rodents carry
the disease into homes and food stores,
especially in the dry season running from
November to April.
"We have had literally dozens of cases of
Lassa fever already in the eastern part of
Sierra Leone," said Prof Robert Garry of Tulane
University which has researched Lassa in West
Africa for a decade.
Once infected, Lassa can spread from person-
to-person. Not everyone who catches it
becomes seriously ill, but fatality rates have
been known to be as high as 70%. It is less
easily transmitted than Ebola, but nonetheless
patients must still be treated in complete
isolation.
PoliticsBurkina Faso Army Told To Hand Over Power by Hadewahlay(op): 10:37am On Nov 04, 2014
The African Union (AU) has given Burkina
Faso's military a two-week deadline to hand
power to a civilian ruler or face sanctions.
The AU said the army had acted
unconstitutionally when it took over after
President Blaise Compaore was forced to
resign on Friday.
The military said a civilian-led transitional
government would be established as quickly
as possible.
Mr Compaore quit after mass protests at his
bid to extend his 27-year rule.
On Saturday, the military named Lt Col Isaac
Zida, previously second in command of the
presidential guard, as the new interim ruler.
'Supporting role'
A popular revolt led to Mr Compaore's
resignation, but the military takeover was
against democracy, said AU official Simeon
Oyono Esono, following a meeting of the
body's Peace and Security Council in Ethiopia.
The AU will apply sanctions against Burkina
Faso if the military fails to give up power
within two weeks, Mr Esonohe told Reuters.
The BBC's Emmanuel Igunza in the Ethiopian
capital Addis Ababa says the sanctions could
include suspension of Burkina Faso's AU
membership and a travel ban on military
officials.
The AU's Peace and Security Council is
expected to meet again in two weeks' time to
discuss the crisis, he says.
Col Zida told diplomats and journalists in
Burkina Faso's capital, Ouagadougou, that the
military had no plan to usurp power.
It wanted a transitional government made up
of civilians to take office, he said.
The military would play a supporting role, Col
Zida added.
BBC Afrique analyst Lamine Konkodo says
many people in Burkina Faso expect Col Zida
to honour his word, and it is now up to
politicians and civil society leaders to agree
on who will lead a transitional government.
