LiteratureBlog Post: Romance Book Tropes As Zodiac Signs (part One) by halimalfoy(op): 2:12am On Jun 19, 2025
Written in the stars, love stories are.

In these love stories, we read of star-crossed lovers. Romance novels featuring couples that have to fight fate to be together—couples that have to rewrite the stars to get their happily ever afters.

But unfortunately, this particular blog post isn’t about that (at least, not by a 100%). I’m just making star puns because we’re about to have some romantic, zodiac-inspired fun!

Zodiac signs and their connotations are deeply ingrained in how people interact with other people these days—especially when it comes to the relationship-dating aspect. Your Tinder right-swipe ghosting you after the very first date because, “sorry, I don’t date Capricorns”? Your girlfriend of four years breaking up with you because, “you’re a Scorpio and I’m an Aries so it’s better we break up now because we so aren’t compatible, long term”? The guy you’ve been seeing for the past two months saying that it’s better you keep seeing each other casually because, “Cancers are too clingy and emotional for me, an Aquarius”?

Yeah. This is happening. This…happens.

But, again, this blog post isn’t about all that (unfortunately). This post is about romance book tropes, how they correspond with some zodiac signs, and some lovely book recommendations featuring the mentioned tropes!

Let’s get into it, yeah?

DyshApp:
Is "yes & I love you" the name of the book?
Been so long since I logged in, I'm so sorry. Yes, that's the name of the book. Hopefully you've read it by now and enjoyed it.

They fall in love. They break up. And sometimes, they end up together again after weeks, months, years of secretly pining and outwardly spitting vitriol about each other.

Yikes. What a mess.

I mean, what a mess I can’t get enough of.

Second-chance romances are one of the most popular romance tropes out there, and why not? We’ve all been there, one way or another. We’ve all had that ex-boyfriend we wanted to send that drunk text to, that ex-girlfriend we wish would unblock us on Instagram. In a way, it’s human nature; we all have that one past love we want one more chance with, because how could something so perfect end so horribly? How could something so perfect end at all?

And that’s the beauty of this trope; it answers those niggling questions, while also giving us that fairytale happy ending that tends to elude us in reality.

This trope is a personal favourite of mine for many reasons, but mostly because it reminds me that not everything is as it seems. It teaches the power of hope and the importance of forgiveness. It highlights communication as a major device for long-lasting relationships, and also reinforces the fact that make-up sex remains undefeated (apparently).
Plus, this trope has all the ingredients to make you scream into your pillow. The angst, drama, tension, and in most cases, the jealousy. The PINING. Literally, what more could you want in a romance bookhuh
So, let’s get into the main event, yeah?

3 SECOND CHANCE ROMANCE BOOKS YOU JUST HAVE TO CHECK OUT

THE PARTY CRASHER BY SOPHIE KINSELLA

“Oh, hi,” Joe says as he approaches, his eyes unreadable. “How are you?”
“Fine.” I shrug nonchalantly. “How are you?”
“Fine.”
Joe’s eyes shoot to my neck, and I instinctively put a hand to my beaded necklace—then curse myself. I shouldn’t have reacted. I should have blanked him. What? Sorry? Did I once wear something around my neck with some kind of significance between us? Forgive me, I don’t quite remember the details.
—Excerpt from The Party Crasher by Sophie Kinsella.

Spoiler alert: she remembers the details.
This novel is more chick-lit than romance, but the male lead in this book is one of my favorite male leads (when we’re talking strictly about Sophie’s works, mind you) so I felt the need to recommend it. Who doesn’t want a hot, thoughtful man who endorses—no, wait—loves your absurd self?
Absurd. That’s one way to describe this book. It’s full of chaos (think: sneaking yourself into a family party you declined an invitation to, and then trying to spend the remainder of your time there trying not to get caught) and family drama (think divorced parents, siblings with shaky relationships), but also full of fluff, laugh-out-loud moments and heart-warming lines.
Another way to describe this book? It’s wonderful. You know; in an absurd way. You should check it out.

THE EX HEX BY ERIN STERLING

Baby girl.” Gwyn sighed, and Vivi hugged her back, letting herself cry.
“It’s so stupid!”
“So is love, to be honest.”
“We’re completely wrong for each other!”
“Which is why it’s hot.”
“I cursed him, Gwynnevere.”
“Who among us hasn’t.”
—Excerpt from The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling.
It’s a classic case of boy meets girl, boy and girl have whirlwind romance for a summer, boy (unintentionally) breaks girl’s heart and moves away, girl gets drunk and (literally) curses guy’s name. You know. Relatable stuff.
Only, the girl is an actual Harry Potter-type witch so the curse works. And now, boy and girl have to find a way to break the curse before the curse ends up breaking the boy’s skull (oh, and also, save their town because somehow, the curse ended up affecting the town? But who cares; we’re here for the make-up sex romantic plot-line.)
This book was an easy read. Enough action to keep me going, a cocky powerful male-lead, and magic? Yes please.

TWICE IN A BLUE MOON BY CHRISTINA LAUREN

“You told me to stay away and, other than to tell you how good you were at the role, I did. Every time we have a blowup like this, it’s you seeking me out. You want the truth?” he asks, shoving his hands deep into his front pockets and leaning forward. “I hated seeing you in the grass with Nick. I hated seeing you in the bed today with him. I don’t have any right, but I did. Every time you’re near me I can’t touch you, I can’t pull you closer. I have to sit in it, stew in it. You’re beautiful, and hilarious, and ambitious. You’re still—” He cuts off, shaking his head. “I have to see what I had and what I gave up. But feeling bad for myself isn’t how this works, is it? I made the choice.” He takes a step away from me. “This is me living with it.” He takes another step away. “I’ll apologize a million more times, I swear, but just let me have a bad fucking mood tonight.”
—Excerpt from Twice in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren.
The passion this book contains. Did you read the excerpt? Did you read the excerpt?!
This book, unlike the others on this list, isn’t quite as lighthearted. But considering the protagonist is a Hollywood actress with daddy issues, who is working on a movie written and overseen by the first guy she fell in love with, who then betrayed her, you probably already expected this.
The emotion, guys. The fluffy love at first sight, oh-my-God-how-is-it-possible-I-like-you-so-much-already trope is there. The angst and drama. The jealousy, sexual tension, the—what else do you wanthuh

It sounds like a rhetorical question, but really, it’s not. Tell me, what is it you want? What kind of book recommendations do you want to see?
Tell me what you think. Have you read any of these books? If you have, tell me what you thought about them!
And if you haven’t, well. You should do that. Like, now.
See you next time, loves. Feel free to subscribe, share with your friends, and share your thoughts with me!
