I think it's more of a media liability than evolution. The media has been the leading tool that propagate sexuality and it characteristics.

They grant audience to safety razor companies to uplift their sales by 'enlightening' people on the need to trim their pubes. Gradually it becomes a tradition and those who don't trim theirs are seen as unkempt and unhygienic.

Just same way we fault them for gays and lesbianism practice which science has proven was in existence long before the advent of civilization.

These abhorrent behaviour have been with mankind and cut across race, religion and background but many have conveniently chosen not to admit it.
